BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer experience physical, cognitive, and psychosocial effects from cancer treatment that can negatively affect their ability to remain engaged in education or work through cancer treatment and in the long term. Disengagement from education or work can have lasting implications for AYAs' financial independence, psychosocial well-being, and quality of life. Australian AYAs with cancer lack access to adequate specialist support for their education and work needs and report a preference for web-based support that they can access from anywhere, in their own time. However, it remains unclear what web-based resources exist that are tailored to support AYAs with cancer in reaching their educational or work goals. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine what web-based resources exist for Australian AYAs with cancer to (1) support return to education or work and (2) identify the degree to which existing resources are age-specific, cancer-specific, culturally inclusive, and evidence-based; are co-designed with AYAs; use age-appropriate language; and are easy to find. METHODS: We conducted an environmental scan by searching Google with English search terms in August 2022 to identify information resources about employment and education for AYAs ever diagnosed with cancer. Data extraction was conducted in Microsoft Excel, and the following were assessed: understandability and actionability (using the Patient Education and Materials Tool), readability (using the Sydney Health Literacy Laboratory Health Literacy Editor), and whether the resource was easy to locate, evidence-based, co-designed with AYAs, and culturally inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The latter was assessed using 7 criteria previously developed by members of the research team. RESULTS: We identified 24 web-based resources, comprising 22 written text resources and 12 video resources. Most resources (21/24, 88%) were published by nongovernmental organizations in Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. A total of 7 resources focused on education, 8 focused on work, and 9 focused on both education and work. The evaluation of resources demonstrated poor understandability and actionability. Resources were rarely evidence-based or co-designed by AYAs, difficult to locate on the internet, and largely not inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. CONCLUSIONS: Although web-based resources for AYAs with cancer are often available through the websites of hospitals or nongovernmental organizations, this environmental scan suggests they would benefit from more evidence-based and actionable resources that are available in multiple formats (eg, text and audio-visual) and tailored to be age-appropriate and culturally inclusive.

OBJECTIVE: Many children's hospitals have established 'recreation rooms' to help reduce distress among hospitalised children and families. We investigated recreation rooms in two Australian children's hospitals to determine: 1) families' first use of the room (including discovery and delays); 2) characteristics of families accessing the room; 3) parents' positive and negative associations with the room; and 4) parents' most and least valued aspects of the room. METHOD: Using a concurrent mixed methods design, parents completed questionnaires (Restorative Experiences Tool, Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory) and an optional interview. We analysed data using t-tests and multiple regressions (questionnaires) and content analysis (interviews). RESULTS: Parents (n = 123) commonly reported delays in accessing the recreation room (n = 74, 60.2%). Parents' distress was positively related to their frequency of room use (r = 0.28, p = .001). Families of hospitalised children with lower physical (r = -0.36, p < .001) and psychosocial (r = -0.31, p = .001) functioning used the room more frequently than families of children with higher functioning. Parents reported more positive than negative associations with the rooms for themselves (t(121) = 20.92, 95% CI = 4.34-5.25), their hospitalised child (t(117) = 23.91, 95% CI = 5.00-5.90), and any siblings (t(79) = 15.76, 95% CI = 4.28-5.52). Thirteen parents completed the interviews. We identified three themes: 1) respite; 2) social support and reduced isolation; and 3) need for greater accessibility (particularly for infants/toddlers). CONCLUSIONS: Respite and social support provided within the recreation rooms may be particularly important for highly distressed parents and families of children with lower psychosocial and physical functioning. Dedicated areas for different age groups may help to improve accessibility of the recreation rooms.

Neurons in the lateral septum (LS) integrate glutamatergic synaptic inputs, primarily from hippocampus, and send inhibitory projections to brain regions involved in reward and the generation of motivated behavior. Motivated learning and drugs of abuse have been shown to induce long-term changes in the strength of glutamatergic synapses in the LS, but the cellular mechanisms underlying long-term synaptic modification in the LS are poorly understood. Here, we examined synaptic transmission and long-term depression (LTD) in brain slices prepared from male and female C57BL/6 mice. No sex differences were observed in whole cell patch-clamp recordings of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPA-R)- and N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R)-mediated currents. Low-frequency stimulation of the fimbria fiber bundle (1 Hz 15 min) induced LTD of the LS field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP). Induction of LTD was blocked by the NMDA-R antagonist (d)-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (APV), but not the selective antagonist of GluN2B-containing NMDA-Rs ifenprodil. These results demonstrate the NMDA-R dependence of LTD in the LS. The LS is a sexually dimorphic structure, and sex differences in glutamatergic transmission have been reported in vivo; our results suggest sex differences observed in vivo result from network activity rather than intrinsic differences in glutamatergic transmission.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The lateral septum (LS) integrates information from hippocampus and other regions to provide context-dependent (top down or higher order) regulation of mood and motivated behavior. Learning and drugs of abuse induce long-term changes in the strength of glutamatergic projections to the LS; however, the cellular mechanisms underlying such changes are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate there are no apparent sex differences in fast excitatory transmission and that long-term synaptic depression in the LS is NMDA-R dependent.
