RESUMO

We demonstrate a compact 16-channel 200 GHz polarization diversity wavelength de-multiplexer circuit using two silicon AWGs and 2D grating couplers. Estimated fiber to fiber loss is better than -15.0 dB. Insertion loss and crosstalk induced by the AWGs are -2.6 dB and 21.5 dB, respectively. The maximum polarization dependent wavelength shift is 0.12 nm. The polarization dependent loss varies between 0.06 dB and 2.32 dB over the 16 channels. The total circuit footprint is 1400 × 850 µm(2).

RESUMO

CMOS-compatible optical modulators are key components for future silicon-based photonic transceivers. However, achieving low modulation voltage and high speed operation still remains a challenge. As a possible solution, the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform has been proposed. In the SOH approach the optical signal is guided by a silicon waveguide while the electro-optic effect is provided by an organic cladding with a high χ(2)-nonlinearity. In these modulators the optical nonlinear region needs to be connected to the modulating electrical source. This requires electrodes, which are both optically transparent and electrically highly conductive. To this end we introduce a highly conductive electron accumulation layer which is induced by an external DC "gate" voltage. As opposed to doping, the electron mobility is not impaired by impurity scattering. This way we demonstrate for the first time data encoding with an SOH electro-optic modulator. Using a first-generation device at a data-rate of 42.7 Gbit/s, widely open eye diagrams were recorded. The measured frequency response suggests that significantly larger data rates are feasible.

RESUMO

In this paper, the use of diffractive grating structures to efficiently interface between a single mode fiber and a high index contrast waveguide circuit is outlined. We show that high index contrast grating structures allow for broadband and high efficiency coupling. Since no polished facet is required on the photonic integrated circuit to interface with the optical fiber, fiber-to-chip grating couplers enable wafer-scale testing, reducing the cost for testing large scale integrated optical circuits. We show that two-dimensional grating structures can solve the problem of the huge polarization dependence of high index contrast photonic integrated circuits. Finally, an optical probe is presented, which allows testing individual components of a photonic integrated circuit, analogous to the electrical probes used in micro-electronics.

RESUMO

High speed modulation based on a compact silicon ring resonator operating in depletion mode is demonstrated. The device exhibits an electrical small signal bandwidth of 19 GHz. The device is therefore a candidate for highly compact, wide bandwidth modulators for a variety of applications.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a compact, fiber-pigtailed, 4-by-4 wavelength router in Silicon-on-insulator photonic wires, fabricated using CMOS processing methods. The core is an AWG with a 250GHz channel spacing and 1THz free spectral range, on a 425x155 microm(2) footprint. The insertion loss of the AWG was reduced to 3.5dB by applying a two-step processing technique. The crosstalk is -12dB. The device was pigtailed using vertical fiber couplers and an eight-fiber array connector.

RESUMO

We describe the use of two-photon absorption in submicron silicon wire waveguides for all-optical switching by cross-absorption modulation. Optical pulses of 3.2 ps were successfully converted from high power pump to low power continuous-wave signal with a fast recovery time. High speed operation was based on the induced optical absorption from non-degenerate two-photon absorption inside the waveguides.

RESUMO

We demonstrate optical bistability in a Silicon-On-Insulator two-bus ring resonator with input powers as low as 0.3mW. We evaluate the importance of the different nonlinear contributions and derive time constants for carrier and thermal relaxation effects. In some cases, we also observe pulsation due to interaction between the dominant nonlinear effects. Such a behaviour may be problematic for possible memory and switching operations. Alternatively, it could be used for (tunable) pulse generation.

RESUMO

A photonic crystal waveguide splitter that exhibits ultralow-loss 3-dB splitting for TE-polarized light is fabricated in silicon-on-insulator material by use of deep UV lithography. The high performance is achieved by use of a Y junction, which is designed to ensure single-mode operation, and low-loss 60 degrees bends. Zero-loss 3-dB output is experimentally obtained in the range 1560-1585 nm. Results from three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain modeling with no adjustable parameters are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

RESUMO

For the compact integration of photonic circuits, wavelength-scale structures with a high index contrast are a key requirement. We developed a fabrication process for these nanophotonic structures in Silicon-on-insulator using CMOS processing techniques based on deep UV lithography. We have fabricated both photonic wires and photonic crystal waveguides and show that, with the same fabrication technique, photonic wires have much less propagation loss than photonic crystal waveguides. Measurements show losses of 0.24dB/mm for photonic wires, and 7.5dB/mm for photonic crystal waveguides. To tackle the coupling to fiber, we studied and fabricated vertical fiber couplers with coupling efficiencies of over 21%. In addition, we demonstrate integrated compact spot-size converters with a mode-to-mode coupling efficiency of over 70%.

RESUMO

Fifteen patients were treated with low-dose (5 u/hour) insulin infusion, including 10 cases of ketoacidosis, 3 cases of hyperglycemia without acidosis in severely affected diabetics, and 2 cases with hyperosmolality. The treatment was successful in all cases. Insulin was infused at a constant rate, during 12 hours as a mean value. Blood glucose fell regularly and no hypoglycemia occured. Serum potassium varied within narrow limits, and no accident related to hypokalemia was observed. The correction of ketoacidosis was delayed, as compared to that of hyperglycemia. The two elderly patients with hyperosmolality recovered quickly and completely. The method of low-dose insulin infusion seems thus effective and easily applicable, at least in an intensive care unit. Our experience prompted us to increase (10 u/h) rather than to decrease the insulin infusion rate, with the aim to obtain a faster correction of ketoacidosis.
