RESUMO

Oxyfluoride glass-ceramics (OxGCs) with the molar composition 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) were prepared with sol-gel following the "pre-crystallised nanoparticles route" with promising optical results. The preparation of 1.5 mol % Eu3+-doped NaGdF4 nanoparticles, named 1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4, was optimised and characterised using XRD, FTIR and HRTEM. The structural characterisation of 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) OxGCs prepared from these nanoparticles' suspension was performed by XRD and FTIR revealing the presence of hexagonal and orthorhombic NaGdF4 crystalline phases. The optical properties of both nanoparticles' phases and the related OxGCs were studied by measuring the emission and excitation spectra together with the lifetimes of the 5D0 state. The emission spectra obtained by exciting the Eu3+-O2- charge transfer band showed similar features in both cases corresponding the higher emission intensity to the 5D0→7F2 transition that indicates a non-centrosymmetric site for Eu3+ ions. Moreover, time-resolved fluorescence line-narrowed emission spectra were performed at a low temperature in OxGCs to obtain information about the site symmetry of Eu3+ in this matrix. The results show that this processing method is promising for preparing transparent OxGCs coatings for photonic applications.

RESUMO

The mechanical qualities of AZ31B magnesium alloys make them a promising material for biodegradable metallic implants. However, rapid degradation limits the application of these alloys. In the present study, 58S bioactive glasses were synthesized using the sol-gel method and several polyols such as glycerol, ethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol, were used to improve the sol stability and to control the degradation of AZ31B. The synthesized bioactive sols were dip-coated onto AZ31B substrates and then, characterized by various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), among them. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a silica, calcium, and phosphate system and the XRD the amorphous nature of the 58S bioactive coatings obtained by sol-gel. The contact angle measurements confirmed that all the coatings were hydrophilic. The biodegradability response under physiological conditions (Hank's solution) was investigated for all the 58S bioactive glass coatings, observing a different behaviour depending on the polyols incorporated. Thus, for 58S PEG coating, an efficient control of the release of H2 gas was observed, and showing a pH control between 7.6 and 7.8 during all the tests. A marked apatite precipitation was also observed on the surface of the 58S PEG coating after the immersion test. Thus, the 58S PEG sol-gel coating is considered a promising alternative for biodegradable magnesium alloy-based medical implants.

This article seeks to explore the construction of bonds, their relation with the development of autonomy and the mental health problems of young adult ex-combatants of armed groups who are part of the reintegration process in Colombia. A total of 3977 records of the Psychosocial Multimodal Questionnaire (PMS) corresponding to young adults between 18 and 24 years old, which were applied in the development of the reincorporation process, were analyzed. Two complementary statistical analysis methods were applied: The Principal Components Method (PCA) and an agglomerative Hierarchical method. In the analysis of bonding processes, it was found that, in one group, about 80% of the cases recorded having experienced significant bonding ruptures due to violence, early abandonment and/or living in contexts of conflict and violence. Regarding the analysis of the processes of autonomy, a group corresponding to 70% reported not having the capacities to guarantee their autonomy and quality of life, going through conditions of job insecurity with the risk of incurring in criminal networks. And 39% report a high risk disposition in their relationship and autonomy processes.

RESUMO

The development of anti-corrosion polymeric coatings has grown exponentially in the fields of material science, chemistry, engineering, and nanotechnology during the last century and has prompted the evolution of efficient characterization techniques. Nowadays, polymeric coatings represent a well-established protection system that provides a barrier between a metallic substrate and the environment. However, the increase in complexity and functionality of these coatings requires high-precision techniques capable of predicting failures and providing smart protection. This review summarizes the state of the art for the main electrochemical techniques, emphasizing devices that track the anti-corrosion properties of polymeric coatings from the macroscale to the nanoscale. An overview of the advances in accelerated corrosion testing and the electrochemical characterization of coatings is explored, including insights into their advantages and limitations. In addition, the challenges and potential applications of the theoretical approaches are summarized based on current knowledge. Finally, this work provides the reader with the trends and challenges of designing future technologies and models capable of tracking corrosion and predicting failures.

RESUMO

In this study, glass-ceramics based on Sr2MgSi2O7 phosphor co-doped with Eu/Dy were obtained from the sintering and crystallisation of glass powders. The glasses were melted in a gas furnace to simulate an industrial process, and the dopant concentration was varied to optimise the luminescence persistence times. The doped parent glasses showed red emission under UV light excitation due to the doping of Eu3+ ions, while the corresponding glass-ceramics showed persistent blue emission corresponding to the presence of Eu2+ in the crystalline environment. The dopant concentration had a strong impact on the sintering/crystallisation kinetics affecting the final glass-ceramic microstructure. The microstructures and morphology of the crystals responsible for the blue emission were observed by scanning electron microscopy-cathodoluminescence. The composition of the crystallised phases and the distribution of rare-earth (RE) ions in the crystals and in the residual glassy phase were determined by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The emission and persistence of phosphorescence were studied by photoluminescence.

RESUMO

AZ31B Mg alloys were anodized at different potentials using an alkaline electrolyte. Then, an epoxy-alkyl silane sol reinforced with SiO2 nanoparticles was prepared by sol-gel and deposited on top of the optimized anodic layers. 1-Methyl imidazole was added to the sol to promote a partial epoxy ring aperture and improve the condensation degree of the inorganic network. The results showed the curing temperature affects the inorganic polycondensation of the organic-inorganic network; this effect was analyzed by 29Si and 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution revealed that the corrosion resistance is enhanced by the anodized process obtained for Mg alloy anodized at 100 V/2 min. However, a quick deterioration of the oxide film with immersion time was evident, showing a reduction of the protection efficiency (ηE%) of 76.5% after 16 h/immersion. The deposition of an epoxy-alkyl coating improved the ηE% up to 98.6% after 72 h/immersion. The proposed hybrid coating used for post-sealing the porous anodized Mg alloy looks like a good alternative protective barrier to control the corrosion process of Mg alloys. A suitable compromise between cross-linking network and curing temperature is necessary to obtain a good barrier coating.

RESUMO

Transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics containing NaGdF4 nanocrystals were prepared by melt-quenching and doped with Er3+ (0.5 mol%) and different amounts of Yb3+ (0-2 mol%). The selected dopant concentration the crystallization thermal treatments were chosen to obtain the most efficient visible up-conversion emissions, together with near infrared emissions. The crystal size increased with dopant content and treatment time. NaGdF4 NCs with a size ranging 9-30 nm were obtained after heat treatments at Tg + 20-80 °C as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis shows the incorporation of rare earth ions into the NaGdF4 nanocrystals. Near-infrared emission spectra, together with the up-conversion emissions were measured. The optical characterization of the glass-ceramics clearly shows that Er3+ and Yb3+ ions are incorporated in the crystalline phase. Moreover, visible up-conversion emissions could be tuned by controlling the nanocrystals size through appropriated heat treatment, making possible a correlation between structural and optical properties.

RESUMO

In the present work, nanostructured graphene nanosheets were added to hybrid silica sols and deposited on aluminium alloy A2024-T3 to study the effect on the corrosion behaviour. Sols were prepared using tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS), 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and a colloidal silica suspension (LUDOX) as silica precursors with adding chemically modified graphene nanosheets (GN-chem). The graphene nanosheets were modified through a straightforward and simple hydrothermal approach and then, dispersed into a silica sol (SiO2/GN-chem). ATR-FTIR was used to optimize the silica sol-gel synthesis and to confirm the cross-linking of the silica network. The corrosion behaviour of the SiO2/GN-chem coatings was also analysed by electrochemical measurement (potentiodynamic polarization) in 0.05 M NaCl solution. The results showed that the incorporation of modified graphene nanosheets into hybrid silica sol-gel coatings affected the corrosion properties of the substrates. An improvement in the corrosion resistance was observed likely due to the enhanced barrier property and hydrophobic behaviour obtained by incorporation of GN-chem and colloidal silica nanoparticles.

The commitment of the heads of the Autonomous Communities and the health centers is key to a good management and the quality of the Specialized Healthcare Training (SHT). This implies the accreditation and recognition of tutors, developing the regulatory framework established by Royal Decree 183/2008 (nine years after its publication, only Catalonia, the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, Extremadura, La Rioja and the Basque Country have done so), an explicit mention of the SHT in the strategic plans of the health organizations and an active participation of the heads of SHT in the boards of directors. On the part of the Ministry of Health, it is necessary to speed up the accreditation process of new teaching units and, together with the Autonomous Communities, and address the financing problems of the core curriculum project and the organization of the core teaching units. Regarding the sense of training, this has to focus on safety patient, here the simulation is a suitable training methodology, and in the humanization, with a practice of medicine under a deliberative model, being the trainers an example for those who learn

RESUMO

Transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramic films and self-supported layers with composition 80SiO2-20LaF3 doped with Er3+ have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel process for the first time. Crack-free films and self-supported layer with a maximum thickness up to 1.4 µm were obtained after heat treatment at the low temperature of 550 °C for 1 min, resulting in a LaF3 crystal fraction of 18 wt%, as confirmed by quantitative Rietveld refinement. This is the highest value reported up to now for transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics prepared by sol-gel. This work provides a new synthesis strategy and opens the way to a wide range of potential applications of oxyfluoride glass-ceramics. The characterization by a wide range of techniques revealed the homogeneous precipitation of LaF3 nanocrystals into the glass matrix. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance confirmed that the Er3+ ions are preferentially embedded in the low phonon-energy LaF3 nanocrystals. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) measurements confirmed the incorporation of dopants in the LaF3 nanocrystals. The effective concentration of rare-earth ions in the LaF3 nanocrystals is also estimated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

RESUMO

The paper explores the applicability of laser-assisted synthesis for producing high density Cu-Al-Ni alloys with shape memory characteristics, that could be further developed towards a method of additive manufacturing of large size Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMA). The manufacturing approach consists in laser melting of elemental powder mixture in a controlled atmosphere of varying relative pressure of protective argon gas, producing alloys of 14.2 wt.% Al and Ni content varying between 2 and 4 wt.%. All the fabricated alloys are found to have attained martensitic microstructures capable of SMA specific phase transformations in the temperature range from 85 to 192 °C. Both gas pressure and content of Ni are found to affect the specific transformation temperatures, transformation enthalpies, and mechanical properties. In particular, increasing gas pressure suppresses the austenite to martensite transformation reducing microhardness. In conclusion, the selective laser melting (SLM) employed in this work is shown capable of producing high density Cu-Al-Ni SMA (porosity ≈ 2%).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The influence of parents can be an important variable in the development of eating disorders (EDs). However, few studies exist which simultaneously assess parents and their children, especially in different clinical groups. METHODS: Our study examines the differences in ED symptoms as measured on the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), in parents and their children as patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), unspecified eating disorder (UED) and a control group (CG). RESULTS: The mothers in the clinical group scored higher in ineffectiveness, interoceptive awareness, maturity fears, social insecurity and impulse regulation than the mothers in the control group. The patients' fathers scored higher on impulse regulation than those in the control group. In addition, the fathers of patients in the BN group scored higher than the fathers of patients in the UED group in body dissatisfaction. They also scored higher in impulse regulation than the fathers of patients with AN. Ineffectiveness and impulse regulation were the variables in which patients' scores were most similar to their parents. CONCLUSIONS: These results show the presence of ED psychological variables in both parents, not just mothers. Prevention and intervention activities for eating disorders must be designed to also give an active role to the father

Transparent glass-ceramics have shown interesting optical properties for several photonic applications. In particular, compositions based on oxide glass matrices with fluoride crystals embedded inside, known as oxyfluoride glass-ceramics, have gained increasing interest in the last few decades. Melt-quenching is still the most used method to prepare these materials but sol-gel has been indicated as a suitable alternative. Many papers have been published since the end of the 1990s, when these materials were prepared by sol-gel for the first time, thus a review of the achievements obtained so far is necessary. In the first part of this paper, a review of transparent sol-gel glass-ceramics is made focusing mainly on oxyfluoride compositions. Many interesting optical results have been obtained but very little innovation of synthesis and processing is found with respect to pioneering papers published 20 years ago. In the second part we describe the improvements in synthesis and processing obtained by the authors during the last five years. The main achievements are the preparation of oxyfluoride glass-ceramics with a much higher fluoride crystal fraction, at least double that reported up to now, and the first synthesis of NaGdF4 glass-ceramics. Moreover, a new SiO2 precursor was introduced in the synthesis, allowing for a reduction in the treatment temperature and favoring hydroxyl group removal. Interesting optical properties demonstrated the incorporation of dopant ions in the fluoride crystals, thus obtaining crystal-like spectra along with higher efficiencies with respect to xerogels, and hence demonstrating that these materials are a suitable alternative for photonic applications.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to find out the degree of psychopathology which patients with an eating disorder present (ED) and to which degree this is accompanied by the presence of psychopathology in mothers and fathers of patients. Three groups of patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) and a control group were selected. Each group had 30 participants (and mothers and fathers). A socio-demographic questionnaire and the SCL-90-R were applied. This scale measured nine dimensions of psychopathology in patients, mothers and fathers. An ANOVA of partially repeated measures with two factors was applied to each dimension of SCL- 90-R. Multiple comparisons between groups within each of the repeated measures were carried out with Sidak test. Patients in three clinical groups obtained significant differences in all psychopathological variables compared with the control group, except in phobic anxiety. These clinical results were accompanied by some degree of psychopathology in mothers but not fathers. The presence of high levels of psychopathology in the three groups of patients and mothers has therapeutic implications that indicate the need for psychological intervention in patients and their mothers (AU)

Here we describe the development of novel nanostructured coating systems with improved photocatalytic and antibacterial activities. These systems comprise a layer of SiO2 followed by a layer of mesoporous or dense TiO2-anatase, and doping with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The coatings were synthesized via a sol-gel technique by combining colloidal Ag NPs with TiO2 and SiO2 sols. The photocatalytic activity was studied through methyl orange decomposition under UV light. Results showed a great increase of photocatalytic activity by Ag NPs doping. The most active photocatalyst corresponded to the Ag-SiO2/TiO2 mesoporous system, associated with the porosity of the coatings and with the decrease of e-h recombination for the presence of Ag NPs. All the TiO2 coatings showed a strong bactericidal activity against planktonic forms of Gram-negative (enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes) pathogens, as well as a strong germicidal effect against deadly spores of human gas gangrene- and anthrax-producing bacteria (Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus anthracis, respectively). The bactericidal and sporocidal activity was improved by doping the coatings with Ag NPs, even more when nanoparticles were in the outer layer of TiO2, because they are more accessible to the environment. The mechanisms responsible for the increase of photocatalytic and bactericidal behaviors related to Ag NP doping were studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence and anodic stripping voltammetry. It was found that the separation of the electron-hole pair contributed to the enhancement of photocatalysis, whereas the effect of the local electric field reinforcement was probably present. A possible involvement of a decrease of band-gap energy and dispersion by silver nanoparticles is ruled out. bactericidal efficacy was increased by Ag(+) ion release. Overall, the results included in this article show that the architecture of the films may tune photocatalytic and bactericidal properties.

RESUMO

Titanium and cobalt alloys, as well as some stainless steels, are among the most frequently used materials in orthopaedic surgery. In industrialized countries, stainless steel devices are used only for temporary implants due to their lower corrosion resistance in physiologic media when compared to other alloys. However, due to economical reasons, the use of stainless steel alloys for permanent implants is very common in developing countries. The implantation of foreign bodies is sometimes necessary in the modern medical practice. However, the complex interactions between the host and the can implant weaken the local immune system, increasing the risk of infections. Therefore, it is necessary to further study these materials as well as the characteristics of the superficial film formed in physiologic media in infection conditions in order to control their potential toxicity due to the release of metallic ions in the human body. This work presents a study of the superficial composition and the corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel and the influence of its main alloying elements when they are exposed to an acidic solution that simulates the change of pH that occurs when an infection develops. Aerated simulated body fluid (SBF) was employed as working solution at 37 degrees C. The pH was adjusted to 7.25 and 4 in order to reproduce normal body and disease state respectively. Corrosion resistance was measured by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and anodic polarization curves.
