Congenital oral synechia and ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital intraoral synechias are adhesions of intraoral structures involving soft tissue. These conditions and another anomaly called ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum, which is partial fusion of the eyelid margins by bands of tissue, are rarely reported in the literature. The association of both anomalies of the craniomaxillofacial region is an even more unusual finding. PURPOSE: This article adds more information to the literature by reporting a case of a neonate with a rare association of bilateral synechia between the jaws, fusion of buccal mucosa to the ridges and between the tongue and palate, and ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum in both eyes, without any other facial or systemic malformation. METHODS: A literature review of similar cases published in PUBMED/MEDLINE was conducted followed by a discussion and comparison to the new case. CONCLUSION: The rare association of these congenital defects, without the presence of syndromic symptoms, could be diagnosed and treated easily with good prognostic evolution.

Oral Manifestations of Secondary Syphilis.

Known as "the great imitator," secondary syphilis may clinically manifest itself in myriad ways, involving different organs including the oral mucosa, and mimicking, both clinically and histologically, several diseases, thereby making diagnosis a challenge for clinicians. We highlight the clinical aspects of oral manifestation in 7 patients with secondary syphilis. Clinicians should consider secondary syphilis in the differential diagnosis of ulcerative and/or white oral lesions.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome: an oral viewpoint.

The Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe variant of erythema multiforme (EM) that occasionally can rise to systemic upset and possibly compromise life. In this report, we described important oral and dermatologic aspects of a case of SJS triggered by Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

A case of oral recurrent ulcerative lesions in a patient with lipoid proteinosis (Urbach-Wiethe disease).

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by deposition of amorphous hyaline material in different parts of the body, especially the skin, mucous membranes of the upper aerodigestive tract, and internal organs. A clinical manifestation of LP usually begins as a hoarseness and failure cry soon after birth or in the first years of life. However, other conditions may occasionally appear few years later. Oral cavity is most extensively affected area by the disease and the main oral abnormalities include diffusive infiltration of white pea-size plaques and stiffening of the tongue as well as inability to protrude it. In this report, we describe the case of a woman affected by LP presenting recurrent ulcerative lesions in mouth associated with xerostomia.

Expression of annexin A1 mRNA in peripheral blood from oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Several studies have been suggesting annexin A1 protein as an active player in tumorigenesis of many organs. Nevertheless, its tumor biomarker role has been mainly studied in tissues by immunohistochemistry or cell culture. Hence, in this investigation, the peripheral blood from 27 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients and 25 negative control individuals were examined by quantitative real-time PCR. Down-regulated ANXA1 expression at mRNA level was observed in OSCC samples (p=0.026). Significantly diminished mRNA levels correlated to age, sex and the anatomical site of the tumor lesion were observed. Moreover, the ROC curve analysis revealed the performance of ANXA1 expression as a suitable biomarker for patients with oral cavity cancer, especially those with 60years of age or older and/or women. For the first time, ANXA1 mRNA is revealed as blood-based biomarker, and its adoption for complementary non-invasive diagnosis of OSCC is suggested. These results suggest that, beyond the anti-inflammatory function, annexin A1 may also play a tumor suppressor role in peripheral blood cells, such as leukocytes.
