Coastal Sabkhas are mudflats found in arid coastal regions that are located within the supratidal zone when high rates of evaporation lead to high salinity. While evaporitic minerals often accumulate underneath the surface, the microbial mats are present on the surface of Sabkhas. Coastal Sabkha, an under-studied ecosystem in Qatar, has the potential to store blue carbon. In the present study, we investigated the carbon storage capacity of two Sabkhas from contrasting geological backgrounds. The spatial and temporal variabilities of the carbon stocks were examined. The results showed that both studied Sabkhas exhibit a considerable potential for soil carbon storage with carbon stocks of 109.11 ± 7.07 Mg C ha-1 and 67.77 ± 18.10 Mg C ha-1 in Dohat Faishakh and Khor al Adaid Sabkha respectively. These values fall within the reported range for carbon stocks in coastal Sabkhas in the region (51-194 Mg C ha-1). Interestingly, the carbon stocks in the sediments of the Sabkhas were higher than those in the sediments of Qatari mangroves (50.17 ± 6.27 Mg C ha-1). These finding suggest that coastal Sabkhas can serve as blue carbon ecosystems in arid environments.

Phenomenon: Simulation-enhanced interprofessional education is a potentially valuable pedagogical approach in health professional education. Simulation-enhanced interprofessional education merits more empirical exploration particularly in terms of experiences from different perspectives. Approach: The study aims to provide a multi-perspective in-depth understanding of students' engagement in a simulation-based interprofessional learning environment. Ninety students and thirteen facilitators participated. We analyzed data from examination sheets of medical and nursing students in a simulation-enhanced interprofessional education course and from a facilitator survey, using manifest inductive content analysis. The analysis was informed by actor network theory and Schön's reflection on action model. Findings: Students reflected on their performance in relation to (1) personal attributes, such as systemization skills; (2) other team members, such as communication skills; and (3) the surrounding environment, such as efficient employment of resources. They also reflected on the consequences of their actions and future professional growth. We observed group differences in conceptualizations of performance and knowledge enactment. Facilitators' and students' perceptions of performance were mostly aligned. Leadership enactment in the learning environment was problematic for students as well as facilitators. Insights: Students' engagement in the learning environment helped them develop a prototype of their professional identity and explore potential domains or tools for further learning and professional growth. Features of the learning environment fostered teamwork skills and allowed students to learn from each other, thus improving performance. Our findings have several implications for education, and professional practice, including the need for meticulous planning of learning environments and the importance of more intensive pedagogical efforts for soon-to-be health professionals regarding workplace dynamics and potential conflicts. It is also important to consider that an interactive learning environment can invoke reflection on action not only among students but also among facilitators and that this can contribute to the development of clinical praxis.

OBJECTIVE: Consumption of fruits and vegetables (F&V) among adolescents falls below recommendations in many Western countries. The impact of social and emotional aspects of family life on adolescent dietary behaviour may contribute to this, yet remains under-investigated. The present study examines the association between adolescents' perceptions of emotional home atmosphere (EHA) and their F&V consumption frequency. DESIGN: An FFQ was used to assess F&V consumption frequency. EHA was assessed by an eight-item measure with three subscales: perceived home warmth, strictness and relational tension. EHA subscales were used as binary variables: a score equal to or above the median value was considered as a higher perception, while a score below the median was considered as a lower perception of the EHA in question. Country differences in meeting the European 5-a-day recommendations were described. Further, the association between EHA and F&V consumption frequency was investigated using multiple linear regression. SETTING: Regional examination centres in eight European countries. PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents (n 3196) aged 12-18 years. RESULTS: The mean F&V consumption frequency was 3·27 (sd 2·84) times/d. Only 16·1 % of boys and 18 % of girls in our study sample met the recommendation of five F&V daily. After controlling for age, sex, education level of the parents and country of origin, perceived home warmth was associated with a 16 (95 % CI 9, 22) % higher F&V consumption frequency (P < 0·001). CONCLUSIONS: F&V consumption frequency was suboptimal in the survey areas. Interventions targeting perceived warmth as a component of EHA could potentially have a positive effect on adolescents' dietary behaviour.
