RESUMO

Cost reduction in bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers has previously been attempted by substituting bulk titanium with austenitic stainless steels protected with highly conductive and corrosion-resistant coatings. However, austenitic steels are more expensive than ferritic steels due to their high nickel content. Herein we report on the corrosion resistance of two high chromium ferritic stainless steels, AISI 442 and AISI 446, as an alternative material to manufacture bipolar plates. Electrochemical corrosion tests have shown that AISI 442 and AISI 446 have similar corrosion resistance, while AISI 446 reveals more noble corrosion potential and performs better during potentiostatic stress tests. The current density obtained during polarization at 2 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) is 3.3 mA cm-2, which is more than two times lower than on AISI 442. Additionally, surface morphology characterization demonstrates that in contrast to AISI 442, AISI 446 is not sensitive to intercrystalline or pitting corrosion. Moreover, EDX energy dispersion analysis of AISI 446 reveals no differences in the chemical composition of the surface layer compared to the base material, as a confirmation of its high corrosion resistance. The results of this work open up the perspective of replacing austenitic stainless steels with less expensive ferritic stainless steels for the production of components such as bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers.

RESUMO

The generation of microactuation using narrow thermal hysteresis Ti-Ni-Cu shape-memory alloy films deposited on non-metallic substrates as the active element is studied based on a model previously developed for Ni-Ti/Si bimorphs. To this end, the compositional range in which the B2 (monoclinic) → B19 (orthorhombic) martensitic phase transformation occurs was considered, and films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on heated Si and Kapton substrates. Ultra-fine grains were observed for the 550 °C deposition temperature. The selected composition was close to Ti50Ni35Cu15, so the narrowing of the thermal hysteresis is not associated with a significant reduction in shape recovery capability. The microstructure and composition of the target materials and as-deposited films used in our experiments were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, whereas the temperature dependence of the volume fraction of the martensite phase was derived using differential scanning calorimetry records for the target materials and from the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance data for the films. An original model was used to predict the actuation of cantilever-type bimorphs with Kapton and Si substrates.

RESUMO

A new class of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles, coined as "Single Crystalline Micrometric Iron Oxide Particles" (SCMIOPs), were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. Both the single Fe3O4 phase content and the particle sizes range, from 1 µm to 30 µm, can be controlled by synthesis. The notable finding states that these particles exhibit vanishing remanent magnetization (σr=0.28 emu/g) and coercive force (Hc=1.5 Oe), which indicate a superparamagnetic-like behavior (unexpected at micrometric particles size), and remarkably high saturation magnetization (σs=95.5 emu/g), what ensures strong magnetic response, and the lack of agglomeration after the magnetic field removal. These qualities make such particles candidates for biomedical applications, to be used instead of magnetic nanoparticles which inevitably involve some drawbacks like aglommeration and insufficient magnetic response. In this sense, cytocompatibility/cytotoxicity tests were performed on human cells, and the results have clearly indicated that SCMIOPs are cytocompatible for healthy cell lines HaCaT (human keratinocytes) and HEMa (primary epidermal melanocytes) and cytotoxic for neoplastic cell lines A375 (human melanoma) and B164A5 (murine melanoma) in a dose-dependent manner.

RESUMO

The effect of superposed transitions in actuators with layered shape memory alloy (SMA) films undergoing martensitic phase transformation is analyzed in terms of a model developed for two layers of different composition, deposited at the same temperature on a substrate. A significant difference is observed in the actuation versus temperature relationship, depending on the thermal and elastic properties of the SMA layers and their martensitic transformation temperature. The prediction of the actuation is exemplified using a multilayer model and is verified for a cantilever actuator with NiTi and NiMnGa layers deposited on a Si substrate. The model sets the ground for a smart selection of SMAs in order to achieve a modulated actuation.
