RESUMO

Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have highlighted a novel challenge concerning the quality and quantity of data required to effectively train algorithms in supervised ML procedures. This article introduces a data augmentation (DA) strategy for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data, employing generative adversarial networks (GANs). We present an innovative approach, called the data augmentation generative adversarial network (DAG), which facilitates data generation from a very limited number of spectra, around 100. Throughout this study, we explore the optimal configuration for GANs to produce realistic spectra. Notably, our DAG generates realistic spectra, and the spectra produced by the generator are successfully used in real-world applications to train classifiers based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) that have been successful in classifying experimental EEL spectra.

RESUMO

Machine Learning (ML) strategies applied to Scanning and conventional Transmission Electron Microscopy have become a valuable tool for analyzing the large volumes of data generated by various S/TEM techniques. In this work, we focus on Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and study two ML techniques for classifying spectra in detail: Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Firstly, we systematically analyze the optimal configurations and architectures for ANN classifiers using random search and the tree-structured Parzen estimator methods. Secondly, a new kernel strategy is introduced for the soft-margin SVMs, the cosine kernel, which offers a significant advantage over the previously studied kernels and other ML classification strategies. This kernel allows us to bypass the normalization of EEL spectra, achieving accurate classification. This result is highly relevant for the EELS community since we also assess the impact of common normalization techniques on our spectra using Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP), revealing a strong bias introduced in the spectra once normalized. In order to evaluate and study both classification strategies, we focus on determining the oxidation state of transition metals through their EEL spectra, examining which feature is more suitable for oxidation state classification: the oxygen K peak or the transition metal white lines. Subsequently, we compare the resistance to energy loss shifts for both classifiers and present a strategy to improve their resistance. The results of this study suggest the use of soft-margin SVMs for simpler EELS classification tasks with a limited number of spectra, as they provide performance comparable to ANNs while requiring lower computational resources and reduced training times. Conversely, ANNs are better suited for handling complex classification problems with extensive training data.

RESUMO

Hydrogenation is a promising technique to prepare black TiO2 (H-TiO2 ) for solar water splitting, however, there remain limitations such as severe preparation conditions and underexplored hydrogenation mechanisms to inefficient hydrogenation and poor photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance to be overcome for practical applications. Here, a room-temperature and rapid plasma hydrogenation (RRPH) strategy that realizes low-energy hydrogen ions of below 250 eV to fabricate H-TiO2 nanorods with controllable disordered shell, outperforming incumbent hydrogenations, is reported. The mechanisms of efficient RRPH and enhanced PEC activity are experimentally and theoretically unraveled. It is discovered that low-energy hydrogen ions with fast subsurface transport kinetics and shallow penetration depth features, enable them to directly penetrate TiO2 via unique multiple penetration pathways to form controllable disordered shell and suppress bulk defects, ultimately leading to improved PEC performance. Furthermore, the hydrogenation-property experiments reveal that the enhanced PEC activity is mainly ascribed to increasing band bending and bulk defect suppression, compared to reported H-TiO2 , a superior photocurrent density of 2.55 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE is achieved. These findings demonstrate a sustainable strategy which offers great promise of TiO2 and other oxides to achieve further-improved material properties for broad practical applications.

RESUMO

In this work, the effect of CuPtB ordering on the optoelectronic properties of Ga0.5In0.5P is studied by combining in situ transmission electron microscopy measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. GaInP layers were grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy with a CuPtB single-variant-induced ordering due to the intentional misorientation of the Ge(001) substrate. Moreover, the degree of order was controlled using Sb as the surfactant without changing other growth parameters. The presence of antiphase ordered domain boundaries (APDBs) between the ordered domains is studied as a function of the order parameter. The in situ electrical measurements on a set of samples with controlled degree of order evidence a clear anisotropic electrical conductivity at the nanoscale between the [110] and [1-10] orientations, which is discussed in terms of the presence of APDBs as a function of the degree of order. Additionally, DFT calculations allow to determine the differences in the optoelectronic properties of the compound with and without ordering through the determination of the dielectric function. Finally, the anisotropy of the electrical conductivity for the ordered case is also discussed in terms of the effective mass calculated from the band structure on specific k-paths. By comparing the experimental measurements and the theoretical calculations, two factors have been presented as the main contributors of the electric conductivity anisotropy of CuPtB-type ordered GaInP thin films: antiphase boundaries that separate domains with uniform order (APDBs) and the anisotropy of the effective mass due to the alternating of In/Ga rich planes.

RESUMO

Hierarchical density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (HDBSCAN) and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP), two new state-of-the-art algorithms for clustering analysis, and dimensionality reduction, respectively, are proposed for the segmentation of core-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectrum images. The performances of UMAP and HDBSCAN are systematically compared to the other clustering analysis approaches used in EELS in the literature using a known synthetic dataset. Better results are found for these new approaches. Furthermore, UMAP and HDBSCAN are showcased in a real experimental dataset from a coreshell nanoparticle of iron and manganese oxides, as well as the triple combination nonnegative matrix factorizationUMAPHDBSCAN. The results obtained indicate how the complementary use of different combinations may be beneficial in a real-case scenario to attain a complete picture, as different algorithms highlight different aspects of the dataset studied.

RESUMO

Finding simple, easily controlled, and flexible synthetic routes for the preparation of ternary and hybrid nanostructured semiconductors is always highly desirable, especially to fulfill the requirements for mass production to enable application to many fields such as optoelectronics, thermoelectricity, and catalysis. Moreover, understanding the underlying reaction mechanisms is equally important, offering a starting point for its extrapolation from one system to another. In this work, we developed a new and more straightforward colloidal synthetic way to form hybrid Au-Ag2X (X = S, Se) nanoparticles under mild conditions through the reaction of Au and Ag2X nanostructured precursors in solution. At the solid-solid interface between metallic domains and the binary chalcogenide domains, a small fraction of a ternary AuAg3X2 phase was observed to have grown as a consequence of a solid-state electrochemical reaction, as confirmed by computational studies. Thus, the formation of stable ternary phases drives the selective hetero-attachment of Au and Ag2X nanoparticles in solution, consolidates the interface between their domains, and stabilizes the whole hybrid Au-Ag2X systems.

RESUMO

Tuning oxygen mass transport properties at the nanoscale offers a promising approach for developing high performing energy materials. A number of strategies for engineering interfaces with enhanced oxygen diffusivity and surface exchange have been proposed. However, the origin and the magnitude of such local effects remain largely undisclosed to date due to the lack of direct measurement tools with sufficient resolution. In this work, atom probe tomography with sub-nanometer resolution is used to study oxygen mass transport on oxygen-isotope exchanged thin films of lanthanum chromite. A direct 3D visualization of nanoscaled highly conducting oxygen incorporation pathways along grain boundaries, with reliable quantification of the oxygen kinetic parameters and correlative link to local chemistries, is presented. Combined with finite element simulations of the exact nanostructure, isotope exchange-atom probe tomography allowed quantifying an enhancement in the grain boundary oxygen diffusivity and in the surface exchange coefficient of lanthanum chromite of about 4 and 3 orders of magnitude, respectively, compared to the bulk. This remarkable increase of the oxygen kinetics in an interface-dominated material is unambiguously attributed to grain boundary conduction highways thanks to the use of a powerful technique that can be straightforwardly extended to the study of currently inaccessible multiple nanoscale mass transport phenomena.

RESUMO

Interfaces play a crucial role in composite magnetic materials and particularly in bimagnetic core/shell nanoparticles. However, resolving the microscopic magnetic structure of these nanoparticles is rather complex. Here, we investigate the local magnetization of antiferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic FeO/Fe3O4 core/shell nanocubes by electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD). The electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) compositional analysis of the samples shows the presence of an oxidation gradient at the interface between the FeO core and the Fe3O4 shell. The EMCD measurements show that the nanoparticles are composed of four different zones with distinct magnetic moment in a concentric, onion-type, structure. These magnetic areas correlate spatially with the oxidation and composition gradient with the magnetic moment being largest at the surface and decreasing toward the core. The results show that the combination of EELS compositional mapping and EMCD can provide very valuable information on the inner magnetic structure and its correlation to the microstructure of magnetic nanoparticles.

RESUMO

The nanoscale magnetic configuration of self-assembled groups of magnetite 40 nm cubic nanoparticles has been investigated by means of electron holography in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The arrangement of the cubes in the form of chains driven by the alignment of their dipoles of single nanocubes is assessed by the measured in-plane magnetic induction maps, in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

RESUMO

Organic and biological compounds (especially those related to the pharmaceutical industry) have always been of great interest for researchers due to their importance for the development of new drugs to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent disease. As many new API (active pharmaceutical ingredients) and their polymorphs are in nanocrystalline or in amorphous form blended with amorphous polymeric matrix (known as amorphous solid dispersion-ASD), their structural identification and characterization at nm scale with conventional X-Ray/Raman/IR techniques becomes difficult. During any API synthesis/production or in the formulated drug product, impurities must be identified and characterized. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at high energy resolution by transmission electron microscope (TEM) is expected to be a promising technique to screen and identify the different (organic) compounds used in a typical pharmaceutical or biological system and to detect any impurities present, if any, during the synthesis or formulation process. In this work, we propose the use of monochromated TEM-EELS, to analyze selected peptides and organic compounds and their polymorphs. In order to validate EELS for fingerprinting (in low loss/optical region) and by further correlation with advanced DFT, simulations were utilized.

RESUMO

Low-power, high-performance metal-insulator-metal (MIM) non-volatile resistive memories based on HfO2 high- k dielectric are fabricated using a drop-on-demand inkjet printing technique as a low-cost and eco-friendly method. The characteristics of resistive switching of Pt (bottom)/HfO2/Ag (top) stacks on Si/SiO2 substrates are investigated in order to study the bottom electrode's interaction with the HfO2 dielectric layer and the resulting effects on resistive switching. The devices show low Set and Reset voltages, high ON/OFF current ratio, and relatively low switching current (∼1 µA), which are comparable to the characteristics of current commercial CMOS memories. In order to understand the resistive switching mechanism, direct structural observation is carried out by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) on cross-sectioned samples prepared by focused ion beam (FIB). In addition, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) inspections discard a silver electro-migration effect.

RESUMO

The physicochemical properties of spinel oxide magnetic nanoparticles depend critically on both their size and shape. In particular, spinel oxide nanocrystals with cubic morphology have shown superior properties in comparison to their spherical counterparts in a variety of fields, like, for example, biomedicine. Therefore, having an accurate control over the nanoparticle shape and size, while preserving the crystallinity, becomes crucial for many applications. However, despite the increasing interest in spinel oxide nanocubes there are relatively few studies on this morphology due to the difficulty to synthesize perfectly defined cubic nanostructures, especially below 20 nm. Here we present a rationally designed synthesis pathway based on the thermal decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate to obtain high quality nanocubes over a wide range of sizes. This pathway enables the synthesis of monodisperse Fe3O4 nanocubes with edge length in the 9-80 nm range, with excellent cubic morphology and high crystallinity by only minor adjustments in the synthesis parameters. The accurate size control provides evidence that even 1-2 nm size variations can be critical in determining the functional properties, for example, for improved nuclear magnetic resonance T2 contrast or enhanced magnetic hyperthermia. The rationale behind the changes introduced in the synthesis procedure (e.g., the use of three solvents or adding Na-oleate) is carefully discussed. The versatility of this synthesis route is demonstrated by expanding its capability to grow other spinel oxides such as Co-ferrites, Mn-ferrites, and Mn3O4 of different sizes. The simplicity and adaptability of this synthesis scheme may ease the development of complex oxide nanocubes for a wide variety of applications.

RESUMO

Interface-dominated materials such as nanocrystalline thin films have emerged as an enthralling class of materials able to engineer functional properties of transition metal oxides widely used in energy and information technologies. In particular, it has been proven that strain-induced defects in grain boundaries of manganites deeply impact their functional properties by boosting their oxygen mass transport while abating their electronic and magnetic order. In this work, the origin of these dramatic changes is correlated for the first time with strong modifications of the anionic and cationic composition in the vicinity of strained grain boundary regions. We are also able to alter the grain boundary composition by tuning the overall cationic content in the films, which represents a new and powerful tool, beyond the classical space charge layer effect, for engineering electronic and mass transport properties of metal oxide thin films useful for a collection of relevant solid-state devices.

RESUMO

Electric-field-controlled magnetism can boost energy efficiency in widespread applications. However, technologically, this effect is facing important challenges: mechanical failure in strain-mediated piezoelectric/magnetostrictive devices, dearth of room-temperature multiferroics, or stringent thickness limitations in electrically charged metallic films. Voltage-driven ionic motion (magneto-ionics) circumvents most of these drawbacks while exhibiting interesting magnetoelectric phenomena. Nevertheless, magneto-ionics typically requires heat treatments and multicomponent heterostructures. Here we report on the electrolyte-gated and defect-mediated O and Co transport in a Co3O4 single layer which allows for room-temperature voltage-controlled ON-OFF ferromagnetism (magnetic switch) via internal reduction/oxidation processes. Negative voltages partially reduce Co3O4 to Co (ferromagnetism: ON), resulting in graded films including Co- and O-rich areas. Positive bias oxidizes Co back to Co3O4 (paramagnetism: OFF). This electric-field-induced atomic-scale reconfiguration process is compositionally, structurally, and magnetically reversible and self-sustained, since no oxygen source other than the Co3O4 itself is required. This process could lead to electric-field-controlled device concepts for spintronics.

RESUMO

The atomic structure of nanoparticles can be easily determined by transmission electron microscopy. However, obtaining atomic-resolution chemical information about the individual atomic columns is a rather challenging endeavor. Here, crystalline monodispersed spinel Fe3O4/Mn3O4 core-shell nanoparticles have been thoroughly characterized in a high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements performed with atomic resolution allow the direct mapping of the Mn2+/Mn3+ ions in the shell and the Fe2+/Fe3+ in the core structure. This enables a precise understanding of the core-shell interface and of the cation distribution in the crystalline lattice of the nanoparticles. Considering how the different oxidation states of transition metals are reflected in EELS, two methods of performing a local evaluation of the cation inversion in spinel lattices are introduced. Both methods allow the determination of the inversion parameter in the iron oxide core and manganese oxide shell, as well as detecting spatial variations in this parameter, with atomic resolution. X-ray absorption measurements on the whole sample confirm the presence of cation inversion. These results present a significant advance toward a better correlation of the structural and functional properties of nanostructured spinel oxides.

RESUMO

Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) compete with molecular catalysts in the field of homogenous catalysis, offering easier recyclability and a number of potentially advantageous functionalities, such as tunable band gaps, plasmonic properties, or a magnetic moment. Using high-throughput printing technologies, colloidal NCs can also be supported onto substrates to produce cost-effective electronic, optoelectronic, electrocatalytic, and sensing devices. For both catalytic and technological application, NC surface chemistry and supracrystal organization are key parameters determining final performance. Here, we study the influence of the surface ligands and the NC organization on the catalytic properties of In2S3, both as a colloid and as a supported layer. As a colloid, NCs stabilized by inorganic ligands show the highest photocatalytic activities, which we associate with their large and more accessible surfaces. On the other hand, when NCs are supported on a substrate, their organization becomes an essential parameter determining performance. For instance, NC-based films produced through a gelation process provided five-fold higher photocurrent densities than those obtained from dense films produced by the direct printing of NCs.

RESUMO

Graphene oxide (GO) is currently the object of extensive research because of its potential use in mass production of graphene-based materials, but also due to its tunability which holds great promise for new nanoscale electronic devices and sensors. To obtain a better understanding of the role of GO in electronic nano-devices, the elucidation of the effects of electrical current on a single GO sheet is of great interest. In this work, in situ transmission electron microscopy is used to study the effects of the electrical current flow through single GO sheets using an scanning tunneling microscope holder. In order to correlate the applied current with the structural properties of GO, Raman spectroscopy is carried out and data analysis is used to obtain information regarding the reduction grade and the disorder degree of the GO sheets before and after the application of current.

RESUMO

The manufacturing of semiconducting films using solution-based approaches is considered a low cost alternative to vacuum-based thin film deposition strategies. An additional advantage of solution processing methods is the possibility to control the layer nano/microstructure. Here, we detail the production of mesoporous CuGaS2 (CGS) and ZnS layers from spin-coating and subsequent cross-linking through chalcogen-chalcogen bonds of properly functionalized nanocrystals (NCs). We further produce NC-based porous CGS/ZnS bilayers and NC-based CGS-ZnS composite layers using the same strategy. Photoelectrochemical measurements are used to demonstrate the efficacy of porous layers, and particularly the CGS/ZnS bilayers, for improved current densities and photoresponses relative to denser films deposited from as-produced NCs.

RESUMO

We present a novel method to produce crystalline oxide aerogels which is based on the cross-linking of preformed colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) triggered by propylene oxide (PO). Ceria and titania were used to illustrate this new approach. Ceria and titania colloidal NCs with tuned geometry and crystal facets were produced in solution from the decomposition of a suitable salt in the presence of oleylamine (OAm). The native surface ligands were replaced by amino acids, rendering the NCs colloidally stable in polar solvents. The NC colloidal solution was then gelled by adding PO, which gradually stripped the ligands from the NC surface, triggering a slow NC aggregation. NC-based metal oxide aerogels displayed both high surface areas and excellent crystallinity associated with the crystalline nature of the constituent building blocks, even without any annealing step. Such NC-based metal oxide aerogels showed higher thermal stability compared with aerogels directly produced from ionic precursors using conventional sol-gel chemistry strategies.

RESUMO

In this work, the use of cluster analysis algorithms, widely applied in the field of big data, is proposed to explore and analyze electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data sets. Three different data clustering approaches have been tested both with simulated and experimental data from Fe3O4/Mn3O4 core/shell nanoparticles. The first method consists on applying data clustering directly to the acquired spectra. A second approach is to analyze spectral variance with principal component analysis (PCA) within a given data cluster. Lastly, data clustering on PCA score maps is discussed. The advantages and requirements of each approach are studied. Results demonstrate how clustering is able to recover compositional and oxidation state information from EELS data with minimal user input, giving great prospects for its usage in EEL spectroscopy.
