RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The integration of Scripture in learning is an important focal element for education at Christian universities. A team of health professions faculty members from four universities belonging to the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities designed, developed, and facilitated a 9-week Scriptural Integration course for health professions faculty teaching at Christian universities. Participants completed the fully online asynchronous course, then completed a post-course survey. Survey responses help reveal what Christian university health professions faculty find useful and applicable in the integration of Scripture in learning.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Human trafficking is a heinous crime and violation of human rights affecting between 25 and 27 million adults and children globally each year. Current immigration and refugee policy could exacerbate the human trafficking public health crisis. Health care providers working in emergency department and urgent care settings interact with human trafficking victims and provide life-changing care. Research identifies a significant need for coordinated, consistent, and standardized education on human trafficking. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of online educational training in human trafficking on the knowledge and self-confidence of registered nurses and nurse practitioners working in the emergency department and urgent care settings in New York. METHODS: An asynchronous, online education module was designed for emergency department and urgent care registered nurses and nurse practitioners to address key components of human trafficking identification, assessment, and treatment. Using a 1-group pretest/posttest design, participants completed an existing published survey tool before and 6 weeks after education. RESULTS: Findings revealed statistically significant improvement (P < .05) in knowledge and confidence regarding components of identifying, assessing, and treating victims of human trafficking. Data demonstrated 63.8% of participants had never received human trafficking training, and 80% reported no history of contact with patients known or suspected of being trafficked. DISCUSSION: Results in this study demonstrate the need for increased standardized education regarding HT for frontline health care workers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest among academic nurse educators in using virtual reality (VR) environments as a pedagogical tool to enhance student learning. PURPOSE: The aim of this scoping study was to identify the theories or conceptual models that informed the application of virtual reality technology in nursing education programs. METHODS: A scoping study using the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework was conducted. A search strategy recommended and executed by a research librarian yielded 18 final articles for review. FINDINGS: There is limited use of theory or a conceptual model, particularly of nursing origin, to guide the integration of VR technology for student learning. DISCUSSION: More research is needed to define best practices for application of VR technology for specific curricular needs, and for theory development based on specific concepts and disciplinary perspectives of learning.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed education provides a framework for a collaborative, relational trauma awareness model when working with nursing students. This concept analysis provides clarification, explicates the conceptual meaning of trauma-informed education, and lays a foundation for nurse educators navigating the challenge of meeting student needs during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHOD: Using Walker and Avant's concept analysis method, exhaustive multi-disciplinary and ancestry searches conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, and PsychINFO identified 31 relevant article that were evaluated for relevance to the concept analysis as it relates to the context of nursing education. RESULTS: This analysis proposes a new definition of trauma-informed education to support future practice and research endeavors, providing a framework for transforming the nurse educator-student dyadic relationship. CONCLUSION: Trauma-informed education can provide a collaborative relational model with students based on trauma awareness as affecting one's being and self. [J Nurs Educ. 2022;61(6):296-302.].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pandemic-related community-wide trauma on have forced examination of chronic stress exposure response. PURPOSE: The aim of this concept analysis was to provide definition and framework for the conceptual meaning of trauma-informed care as foundation for all nursing professionals as we together meet the needs for a changing patient population in a post-pandemic world. METHODS: Using Walker and Avant's (2019) concept analysis method, exhaustive multidisciplinary and ancestry searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, and PsychINFO with 15 relevant manuscripts that were evaluated for relevance to the concept analysis in the context of nursing. DISCUSSION: This analysis proposes a working definition of trauma-informed care in nursing to provide framework for clinical care and research inquiry. Trauma-informed care decreases the impact of psychological trauma for individuals within the healthcare system. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to trauma through trauma-informed care requires universal recognition and screening. Targeted interventions create a system of healing through empowerment, relationship building, and reduction in trauma triggers.

RESUMO

Chronic school absenteeism directly affects educational outcomes while reducing school funding and reimbursement. Asthma is a prevalent disease associated with chronic absenteeism. This quality improvement project demonstrated classroom seat time preserved through use of school-based health centers (SBHC). The project also highlights the educational benefits, reduced emergency department utilization, potential cost savings to hospitals, and lower overall health care costs. Visit summary data were collected and analyzed to show quality asthma care and cost savings. Of 44 acute asthma visits that returned to class, an average classroom time of 3:42 hours were saved per student during the 2017-2018 academic year, resulting in a combined total of 166:07 hours saved. A minimum potential cost savings was estimated to be $67,770 for all 44 visits. Data analysis of structural, process, and outcome measures through quality improvement tools can demonstrate cost savings of SBHC care, which advocates funding for this pediatric care model.

RESUMO

Substance abuse in adolescents has been recognized as a public health problem at the national and global levels. Adolescents are at risk for experimenting with substances. School nurses in secondary schools are well positioned to screen and counsel students on substance use. In this project, school nurses' self-efficacy levels increased in using the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) process posteducation, and SBIRT was integrated into school nurses' practice. Initiatives aimed at stopping or preventing substance use are beneficial for a healthy society.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Trauma is not limited to medical trauma and includes chronic stressors, toxic stress, adverse childhood events, abuse, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Principles of trauma-informed care and resiliency guide pediatric nursing care across the life span from birth to adolescence. Trauma-informed care principles are pertinent to the nursing care needs of healthy and ill children from infancy to adolescence across care settings. METHODS: The purpose of this integrative literature review (IRL) is to elucidate evidence-based practices for pediatric nurses specific to trauma, trauma-informed principles, and the integration of these principles to care. Using Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) methodology, this IRL presents empirical literature to operationalize trauma-informed care for the pediatric nurse through 1) identification of the problem; 2) literature search; 3) data evaluation; 4) data analysis; 5) result presentation. FINDINGS: Results are presented in a contemporary framework by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2018) of trauma-awareness for the pediatric nurse, trauma-informed principles, and the integration of these principles to care. Pediatric nurses are in a unique position to offer trauma-informed care by recognizing and managing trauma to include chronic stressors, toxic stress, adverse childhood experiences, and abuse. DISCUSSION: Pediatric nurses today are caring for patients in a complex and diverse healthcare climate amid the world's worst public health pandemic in living memory. Awareness of trauma, assessment of trauma in pediatrics, and health and resiliency promotion are critical in moving forward post-pandemic. The overview of trauma-informed care provides a guide for the pediatric nurse.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The impact of COVID-19 on older adults may not be readily apparent. Personal protective and social distancing measures can reduce activity levels, increase feelings of isolation and loss, and result in lapsed medical care. NPs must recognize detrimental impacts on overall health and wellness and assist older adults in overcoming them.

RESUMO

Activity levels in nursing home residents were measured with accelerometers over one week as part of a multicenter randomized controlled trial, and complexity of the resulting activity patterns were characterized. Among 813 study participants on whom activity data had been collected, 16 participants developed pressure ulcers by the end of the study. The fractal dimension D0 of the activity series was lower (p=0.039) in residents who developed pressure ulcers than in controls matched on the basis of race, randomization group, score on the Braden scale, and diagnoses of cardiovascular disease and dementia. Hurst exponents indicated that the scaling of the power spectrum was close to 1/f in pressure ulcer cases. At timescales exceeding 30 minutes, approximate entropy tended to be higher in the controls than in the pressure ulcer cases. The fractal structure of the activity time series and its information content offer the ability to predict higher risk of development of pressure ulcers in nursing home residents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was created to address the nursing shortage via development of the next generation of national leaders in academic nursing. PURPOSE: The leadership training combined development at the scholar's home institution with in-person didactic and interactive sessions with notable leaders in nursing and other disciplines. METHODS: A curriculum matrix, organized by six domains, was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. DISCUSSION: What set this program apart is that it immersed junior faculty in concerted leadership development with regard to all aspects of the faculty role so that teaching interactively, making use of the latest in information technology, giving testimony before a policy-making group, participating in strategic planning, and figuring out how to reduce the budget without jeopardizing quality were all envisioned as part of the faculty role. CONCLUSION: The domains covered by this program could easily be used as the framework to plan other leadership-development programs for the next generation of academic leaders.

RESUMO

Informal caregiving is a prevalent phenomenon in the United States. A review of the literature reveals that, although much research has been done regarding the areas of informal caregiver burden and the effect of sleep disruption on healthy adults, little has been done in the area of caregiving and sleep disruption, especially as it relates to older informal caregivers. Older informal caregivers represent a significant portion of the informal caregiving population and are a population at risk for high levels of sleep disturbance. Further research designed to investigate sleep disruption in older informal caregivers is needed to move toward the development of evidence-based assessment tools for practice and interventions aimed at restoring normal sleep patterns in this vulnerable population.

RESUMO

Nonlinear analyses of actigraphy data were utilized to investigate circadian rest-activity system motor control in nursing-home residents with dementia and with/without aggressive behavior (AB). Significant differences observed between groups in measures of approximate entropy (ApEn) and fractal dimension (FD). ApEn and FD are sensitive to detecting and characterizing discrete changes in central motoric control and temporality of behaviors in dementia. Findings may inform understanding of clinical heterogeneity and possible physiologic sub-classifications of Alzheimer's dementia.
