RESUMO

We present a straightforward route for extreme pulse compression, which relies on moderately driving self-phase modulation (SPM) over an extended propagation distance. This avoids that other detrimental nonlinear mechanisms take over and deteriorate the SPM process. The long propagation is obtained by means of a hollow-core fiber (HCF), up to 6 m in length. This concept is potentially scalable to TW pulse peak powers at kW average power level. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate 33-fold pulse compression of a 1 mJ, 6 kHz, 170 fs Yb laser down to 5.1 fs (1.5 cycles at 1030 nm), by employing a single HCF and subsequent chirped mirrors with an overall transmission of 70%.

RESUMO

Time-domain spectroscopy using coherent millimeter and sub-millimeter radiation (also known as terahertz radiation) is rapidly expanding its application, owing greatly to the remarkable advances in generating and detecting such radiation. However, many current techniques for coherent terahertz detection have limited dynamic range, thus making it difficult to perform some basic experiments that need to directly compare strong and weak terahertz signals. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel technique based on cross-polarized spectral-domain interferometry to achieve ultra-high dynamic range electro-optic sampling measurement of coherent millimeter and sub-millimeter radiation. In our scheme, we exploit the birefringence in a single-mode polarization maintaining fiber in order to measure the phase change induced by the electric field of terahertz radiation in the detection crystal. With our new technique, we have achieved a dynamic range of 7 × 10(6), which is 4 orders of magnitude higher than conventional electro-optic sampling techniques, while maintaining comparable signal-to-noise ratio. The present technique is foreseen to have great impact on experiments such as linear terahertz spectroscopy of optically thick materials (such as aqueous samples) and nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy, where the higher dynamic range is crucial for proper interpretation of experimentally obtained results.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has been shown to detect overlapping extended hydration layers around proteins. Here, we used THz-TDS to detect modulation of the extended hydration layer around monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) by the introduction of commonly used excipients. Proline and sucrose altered the hydration layer around a mAb (mAb1), which was observed as a negative shift in the plateau in absorbance above ~100 mg/mL mAb1 (~70,000 water molecules per mAb); arginine had no effect. At lower concentrations of ~10 mg/mL mAb1 (~700,000 water molecules per mAb) proline and arginine modulated the hydration layer, which was observed as a negative shift in the relative absorbance, whereas sucrose had no effect. The changes in the extended hydration layer were not translated to shifts in the thermal stability or protein:protein interaction parameter. The hydration layer of a second mAb (mAb2) was further shown to be modulated by more complex formulations composed of two or more excipients; although the differences in terahertz absorbance were not predictive of viscosity or long-term stability. THz-TDS promises to be a useful tool for understanding a protein's interaction with excipients in solution and the challenge will be to determine how to apply this knowledge to protein formulation.

RESUMO

Dielectric resonators are key elements in many applications in micro to millimeter wave circuits, including ultra-narrow band filters and frequency-determining components for precision frequency synthesis. Distributed-layered and bulk low-loss crystalline and polycrystalline dielectric structures have become very important for building these devices. Proper design requires careful electromagnetic characterization of low-loss material properties. This includes exact simulation with precision numerical software and precise measurements of resonant modes. For example, we have developed the Whispering Gallery mode technique for microwave applications, which has now become the standard for characterizing low-loss structures. This paper will give some of the most common characterization techniques used in the micro to millimeter wave regime at room and cryogenic temperatures for designing high-Q dielectric loaded cavities.

Terahertz spectroscopy was used to study the absorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in water. The Diamond Light Source operating in a low alpha mode generated coherent synchrotron radiation that covered a useable spectral bandwidth of 0.3-3.3 THz (10-110 cm(-1)). As the BSA concentration was raised, there was a nonlinear change in absorption inconsistent with Beer's law. At low BSA concentrations (0-1 mM), the absorption remained constant or rose slightly. Above a concentration of 1 mM BSA, a steady decrease in absorption was observed, which was followed by a plateau that started at 2.5 mM. Using a overlapping hydration layer model, the hydration layer was estimated to extend 15 Å from the protein. Calculation of the corrected absorption coefficient (αcorr) for the water around BSA by subtracting the excluded volume of the protein provides an alternative approach to studying the hydration layer that provides evidence for complexity in the population of water around BSA.

RESUMO

We report broadband transmissions of terahertz radiations through the air channel of thin-wall pipe. The impacts of the wall thickness and of the refractive index of the material on the transmission window bandwidth are investigated. An extension of the bandwidth by at least 5.5 times is reported with a commercial drinking straw. The salient properties of the antiresonant reflecting guiding mechanism are studied with the terahertz time domain spectroscopy method, including the reduction of the attenuation coefficient of the propagated field by 60 times the material absorption coefficient.
