RESUMO

During a helminthological survey of snakes in the Cerrado Biome in Maranhão State, Brazil, we found intestinal nematodes in Leptodeira annulata (Linnaeus), belonging to the genus Oxyascaris Travassos, 1920. We observed that the specimens found are distinct from their congeners by the combination of presented characters, mainly the cuticular expansion at the anterior region of the body, presence of a single papilla at the anterior cloacal lip, number, and arrangement of caudal papillae, presence of somatic papillae along body cuticle, as well as some morphometric characters. Thus, we describe the new species using light and scanning electron microscopy and, revise the morphological characters used to identify Oxyascaris spp. and propose a key to the species of the genus. Therefore, we describe the seventh species in the genus, the second reported to parasitize snakes, the sixth species recorded in Brazil, and the first described in the Cerrado Biome.

Supplementation with folic acid (FA) during gestation has been recommended by medical society all over the world, but some studies have shown that intake of high folic acid diet may unleash damages to the descendants. OBJECTIVES: Describing the effects of maternal supplementation with FA during gestation on offspring's kidney at late life stages. DATA SOURCE: It is a systematic review by which were consulted the following databases: Medline, through Pubmed, Lilacs, and SciELO. The research was performed using the keywords "Folic acid", "Gestation" and "Kidney". STUDY SELECTION: Eight studies were regarded for this systematic review. DATA COLLECTION: Only studies that evaluated folic acid consumption during gestation and its effects exclusively on descendants' kidney at several phases of life were regarded. RESULTS: Gestational FA intake did not change the renal volume, glomerular filtration rate and the expression of some essential genes in the kidney of puppies whose dams were supplemented with FA. Maternal consumption of double FA plus selenium diet was effective in preserving antioxidant enzymes activity in the kidney of descendants from mothers exposed to alcohol. FA supplementation decreased some gross anomalies in the puppies caused by teratogenic drug despite of had not been effective in preventing some renal architectural damages. CONCLUSION: FA supplementation did not cause renal toxicity; it exerted an antioxidant protective effect and mitigated some renal disorders caused by severe aggressions.


A suplementação com ácido fólico (AF) durante a gestação tem sido recomendada pela sociedade médica em todo o mundo, mas alguns estudos têm mostrado que a ingestão de altas quantidades de ácido fólico na dieta pode desencadear danos aos descendentes. Objetivos: Descrever os efeitos da suplementação materna com AF durante a gestação no rim da prole em fases tardias da vida. Fonte de Dados: Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática realizada através da consulta das seguintes bases de dados: Medline, através da Plataforma Pubmed, Lilacs e Scielo. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando-se as palavras-chave "Ácido Fólico", "Gestação" e "Rim". Seleção dos Estudos: Oito estudos foram considerados para esta revisão sistemática. Coleta de Dados: Foram incluídos estudos que abordaram o consumo de ácido fólico durante a gestação e seus efeitos exclusivamente no rim dos descendentes em diferentes fases da vida. Resultados: O consumo gestacional de AF não alterou o volume renal, a taxa de filtração glomerular e a expressão de alguns genes essenciais no rim dos filhotes de mães suplementadas com AF. A associação de AF e selênio na dieta materna foi eficaz na preservação da atividade de enzimas antioxidantes no rim da prole de mães expostas ao álcool. O consumo de AF diminuiu algumas anomalias importantes nos filhotes causadas por drogas teratogênicas, apesar de não ter sido eficiente na prevenção de alguns danos a arquitetura renal. Conclusão: A suplementação com AF não causou toxicicdade renal, exerceu efeito protetor antioxidante e mitigou algumas desordens renais causadas por agressões severas.

Background and objectives: Ultra-processed food products (UPF) have been associated with numerous non-communicable diseases. Despite this, the addictive nature of UPF, and the aggressive marketing strategies used to promote them, has created a strong emotional connection between UPF and consumers, and supports their increasing UPF global consumption. In view of the emotional link that consumers often have with UPF, modulating emotional reactions to UPF (by using strategies such as textual warnings) is important in changing consumers' behavior. Since emotions are better understood by assessing individuals' implicit reactions, we conducted an electroencephalographic study applying the event-related potential technique to investigate whether textual warnings were able to modulate the brain responses to UPF stimuli. Materials and methods: Twenty-six participants (19 women) viewed pictures of UPF preceded by a warning sentence about the health risks of consuming UPF or a control sentence while the electroencephalogram was recorded. In addition, the participants rated the picture in respect of pleasantness, arousal, and intention to consume. As emotions are associated with motivational circuits in the brain, we focused on a well-known event-related potential brain marker of the motivational relevance associated with emotional stimuli, namely late positive potential (LPP). Results: The late positive potential amplitude was larger for pictures depicting UPF under the warning condition compared to the control condition, a result that was accompanied by lower pleasantness ratings during the warning condition (compared to the control). Conclusion: Textual warnings about the negative health consequences of consuming UPF changed the emotional responses toward UPF, possibly increasing the motivation to avoid UPF. These results shed new light on the impact of textual warnings on UPF-evoked emotions.

Bats have a wide diversity of digeneans; however, even with the recent increased interest in studies of parasites on these hosts, there are no data on the microscopic alterations of this host-parasite interaction. The present work characterizes and compares the histological aspects of the liver, gallbladder, and intestine of non-parasitized and parasitized Myotis nigricans by digeneans. Ten specimens of Myotis nigricans collected in an urban area of Western Amazonia were analyzed for parasites. The digeneans were removed from the hosts and identified. Tissue samples of the liver, gallbladder, and intestines of parasitized and non-parasitized hosts were collected for histological studies. The gallbladder was observed in repletion and presents mucosa formed by simple epithelium that varies from cubic to cylindrical. The hepatic lobes do not have a classic polyhedral-hexagonal aspect. Variations in basophilia, acidophile, and cytoplasmatic granulations were observed in hepatocytes. The parasitism of the intestinal digeneans was restricted to space delimited by the extensions of villi in high association with the intestinal epithelium, not invading the region of the intestinal glands at the base of the villi. Trematodes maintained attached to the villus by the oral sucker and acetabulum, connected by a "pleat" composed of epithelium and lamina propria layers. We observed no signs of inflammatory processes and cellular defense infiltrates in host tissues. Cytochemistry alterations, size variation, and granular deposits in hepatocytes, enterocytes, and goblet cells were observed. Thus, this report is the first study of the natural parasite-host interaction in the liver, gallbladder, and intestine in M. nigricans in the neotropical region.

Ochoterenatrema is a small genus of lecithodendriid digeneans that includes six species parasitic in Neotropical bats in North and South America. Members of this genus are characterized by the presence of a pseudogonotyl formed by thickened tegument on the left side of the ventral sucker. We examined morphology of specimens belonging to five species of Ochoterenatrema from Brazil, Ecuador and the USA and describe two new Ochoterenatrema spp. (Ochoterenatrema sphaerula n. sp. and Ochoterenatrema gracilis n. sp.). These new species are readily differentiated from their congeners by a combination of morphological characters, including the distribution of vitelline follicles and the body shape. We have provided the first DNA sequences for Ochoterenatrema. Newly generated partial nuclear 28S rDNA and mitochondrial cox1 gene sequences were used to differentiate among species and study the phylogenetic affinities of Ochoterenatrema spp., including one of the new species, O. gracilis n. sp., as well as Ochoterenatrema diminutum, Ochoterenatrema fraternum and Ochoterenatrema cf. labda. The phylogeny of the Microphalloidea based on 28S had well-supported topology, particularly at the family level. The Ochoterenatrema clade was strongly supported; however, the internal topology of the clade was weakly supported. Comparison of sequences revealed 0.4-1.3% interspecific divergence in 28S and 9.1-19.7% interspecific divergence in cox1 among Ochoterenatrema spp. We hypothesize that extremely diverse fauna of bats in South and Central America harbors multiple undescribed species of Ochoterenatrema. Several lecithodendriid genera from bats and other hosts are yet to be included in future molecular phylogenetic analyses to test the monophyly of this extremely diverse digenean family and analyze evolutionary affinities of its constituent taxa.

Pain is responsible for inducing physical and mental stress, interfering negatively in patients' quality of life. Classic analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are known for their wide range of adverse effects, making it important to develop new drugs. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the action of the hybrid compound cis- (±) -acetate of 4-chloro-6- (naphthalene-1-yl) -tetrahydro-2h-pyran -2-yl) methyl2- (2- [2,6-dichlorophenylamine] phenyl (LS19) under acute nociceptive conditions, and deepened the understanding of the responsible mechanisms. Male Swiss mice were evaluated in the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin, tail flick, capsaicin- and glutamate-induced nociception, thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin and rotarod tests besides the acute and subchronic toxicological evaluation. The compound showed effect on the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin (both phases), tail flick, thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin and capsaicin-induced nociception tests. In the study of the mechanism of action was observed reversion of the antihyperalgesic effect of the compound from the previous intraperitoneal and intrathecal administration of naloxone, nor-binaltorphimine, naltrindole, methylnaltrexone, 7-nitroindazole, L-NAME, ODQ, glibenclamide on the tail flick test. In the thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin, the compound showed antinociceptive effect by oral and intraplantar routes, besides to reducing the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß and PGE2 in the paws previously administered with capsaicin. There were no signs of acute and subchronic intoxication with the compound. In summary, the compound LS19 presented spinal and local antihyperalgesic effect, demonstrating participation of the opioid/NO/cGMP/K+ ATP pathway and TRPV1 receptors and it demonstrated safety in its use in mice.

Allintoshius Chitwood, 1937 is the only genus of the family Ornithostrongylidae (Travassos, 1937) Durette-Desset and Chabaud, 1981 that parasitizes bats. Currently, there are 10 valid species in the genus, of which 3 were described from Brazil. This study describes a new species of Allintoshius and records the first occurrence of a nematode of this genus parasitizing Artibeus lituratus (Olfers). Allintoshius gomesae n. sp. is characterized by having anterior region coiled, cephalic vesicle with cuticular dilation striated transversely, and claviform esophagus. Synlophe in females consists of 16 cuticular ridges at the mid-body. Males have large caudal bursa, and conic and small spicules, and the gubernaculum is absent. Females have uterus didelphic, amphidelphic, tail tip tapered, and ovijector divided into 2 divergent branches, subequal in length. The new species differs from its congeners especially by the shape of the tail tip, vulvar opening, and size of spicules. Allintoshius gomesae is the fourth species of Allintoshius from Brazil and the first report in Ar. lituratus, increasing the number of species recognized of the genus.

Anenterotrema is a small genus of dicrocoeliids (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae) containing 6 species found in Neotropical bats. Members of this genus are characterized by the lack of digestive system organs and, unlike the majority of dicrocoeliids, parasitize the intestine of their definitive hosts. In this study, we have morphologically examined newly collected specimens belonging to four species of Anenterotrema from Brazil, Ecuador, and Panama. Based on the data in original descriptions and our analysis of quality new specimens, we resurrected Anenterotrema freitasi, previously synonymized with A. eduardocaballeroi. We also described a new species of Anenterotrema from Molossus molossus in the Brazilian Amazon. The new species differs from congeners in several morphological features, most prominently in the size and structure of its highly muscular, protuberant ventral sucker. It is also characterized by the lack of the semi-circular thickening of the tegument around the oral sucker typical for some members of the genus. We used partial DNA sequences of the large ribosomal subunit gene (28S) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) to test the monophyly of Anenterotrema, and study the interrelationships and determine the inter- and intraspecific variation of three Anenterotrema spp. collected from different bat species in Brazil, Ecuador and Panama.

Metadelphis tkachi n. sp. is described based on material from the gall-bladder of Molossus molossus (Pallas) (Chiroptera: Molossidae) in the Brazilian eastern Amazon. The main differentiating characters of the new species include lobed, tandem testes and elongated clusters of vitelline follicles commencing at the level of the seminal receptacle. The new species can be distinguished from Metadelphis lenti (Santos & Gibson, 1998) and Metadelphis apharyngotrema (Marshall & Miller, 1979) by the shape and position of the testes; from Metadelphis evandroi Travassos, 1944 by having tandem, lobed testes and shorter clusters of vitelline follicles; from Metadelphis compactus Travassos, 1955 by having tandem testes and more elongated clusters of vitelline follicles, and from Metadelphis alverangai Travassos, 1955 by having smaller testes and body, and vitellarium with large follicles. New morphological data are reported for M. lenti based on light and scanning electron microscopy; intraspecific variation was observed.
