Urban tropical lagoons are often impacted by eutrophication, metal, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination, but the toxicity of their bottom sediments is still poorly investigated in South America. Aiming to contribute to filling this gap, a sediment quality assessment was conducted in the Tijuca Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) using different lines of evidence (LOEs) including sediment characterization, determination of metals and PAHs, and acute toxicity testing with burrowing amphipods (Tiburonella viscana). Mud and organic matter contents played a crucial role in contaminant distribution along the lagoon. The concentrations of PAH were generally low (mean ΣPAH = 795.42 ± 1146.2 ng/g; n = 23), but a contamination hotspot of light PAH compounds was identified. Such PAHs were mainly pyrolytic, probably related to the deposition of atmospheric pollution, although petrogenic compounds also occur in the lagoon. The data indicated the occurrence of geochemical anomalies of Zn, Cu, Pb, and Hg (mean values = 176.9 ± 91.6, 45.1 ± 21.3, 35.2 ± 15.0, 0.1442 ± 0.0893 mg/kg, respectively; n = 23), probably associated with industrial wastes, garbage deposition, urban runoff, and domestic sewage contributions. The mortality of T. viscana was significant for more than 85% of the samples (mean mortality = 70.3 ± 26.0%; n = 23), but it was not significantly correlated with PAH and metal concentrations. On the other side, domestic sewage contributions and eutrophication seem to play a relevant role in sediment toxicity. Actually, the toxicity observed in the tests seems to be due to the simultaneous influence of multiple toxicants and their combined effects on the organisms. Such stressors may include not only metals, PAH, and eutrophication but also chemicals not evaluated in this study, such as hormones, pharmaceuticals and personal care compounds, perfluorocompounds, detergents, and others.

Hyptis dilatata and Mesosphaerum suaveolens belong to Lamiaceae, are aromatic and medicinal subshrubs with antiparasitic potential and occurrence in the Amazon Region. The essential oils of both species were extracted, analyzed, and identified by GC and GC-MS and then evaluated their anthelmintic activities against the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Primary constituents of the samples of H. dilatata oils were limonene (72.6%), myrcene (11.5%), and p-cymene (10.3%) to PAMA19 sample, and camphor (25.5%), α-pinene (25.4%), 1,8-cineole (18.8%), ß-pinene (12.0%), and limonene (5.9%) to PAMA108 sample, while in the oil of M. suaveolens, PAMA131 sample, predominated bicyclogermacrene (23.5%, 1,8-cineole (23.0%), germacrene D (17.2%), and (E)-caryophyllene (10.4%). The sample oil of H. dilatata (PAMA108) exhibited the lower anthelmintic inhibitory concentration, with an IC50 value of 2.09 mg/mL for C. elegans Bristol N2 strain, while the oils of H. dilatata (PAMA19) and M. suaveolens (PAMA131) showed an IC50 up of 4 mg/mL for C. elegans IVR15 and Bristol N2 strains. These results suggest that the H. dilatata and M. suaveolens oils constituents' combination can be helpful as a nematicidal agent due to their synergistic action.

The tick Rhipicephalus microplus affects cattle health, with production loss in tropical and subtropical regions. Moreover, the use of commercial acaricides has been reduced due to the resistance of this parasite. Although alternatives such as plant bioactive molecules have been sought, essential oils present variations in their chemical constituents due to environmental factors, which can interfere with their acaricidal activity. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the seasonal influence of the essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum and its major constituents on acaricidal activity against R. microplus larvae. A high-yield essential oil of O. gratissimum and its major constituents were used, and a plant with a thymol-type oil was selected for seasonal analysis and acaricidal activity against R. microplus. Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS) were employed to identify 31 oil constituents (average yield of 6.26%). The main compounds were found to be thymol (33.4 to 47.9%), γ-terpinene (26.2 to 36.8%), and p-cymene (4.3 to 17.0%). Concerning acaricidal activity, the December (LC50 0.84 mg/mL) and September (LC50 1.58 mg/mL) oils obtained in the dry season were the most active, and assays performed with commercial standards revealed LC50 values of p-cymene, thymol, and γ-terpinene of 1.41, 1.81, and 3.08 mg/mL, respectively. Overall, lower acaricidal activities were found for oils produced from plants harvested in the rainy season. The results showed that seasonal variation in the chemical composition of the O. gratissimum essential oil influences its acaricidal activity. The seasonal variations in the thymol-type essential oil of O. gratissimum can represent an important strategy for the control of R. microplus.
