We analyse the effects of exploration feedback on reaching measures of perceived auditory peripersonal space (APS) boundary and the auditory distance perception (ADP) of sound sources located within it. We conducted an experiment in which the participants had to estimate if a sound source was (or not) reachable and to estimate its distance (40 to 150 cm in 5-cm steps) by reaching to a small loudspeaker. The stimulus consisted of a train of three bursts of Gaussian broadband noise. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: Experimental (EG) and Control (CG). There were three phases in the following order: Pretest-Test-Posttest. For all phases, the listeners performed the same task except for the EG-Test phase where the participants reach in order to touch the sound source. We applied models to characterise the participants' responses and provide evidence that feedback significantly reduces the response bias of both the perceived boundary of the APS and the ADP of sound sources located within reach. In the CG, the repetition of the task did not affect APS and ADP accuracy, but it improved the performance consistency: the reachable uncertainty zone in APS was reduced and there was a tendency to decrease variability in ADP.

The body and the self are commonly experienced as forming a unity. Experiencing the external world as distinct from the self and the body strongly relies on adopting a single self-centered perspective which results in integrating multisensory sensations into one egocentric body-centered reference frame. Body posture and somatosensory representations have been reported to influence perception and specifically the reference frame relative to which multisensory sensations are coded. In the study reported here, we investigated the role of somatosensory and visual information in adopting self-centered and decentered spatial perspectives. Two deafferented patients who have neither tactile nor proprioceptive perception below the head and a group of age-matched control participants performed a graphesthesia task, consisting of the recognition of ambiguous letters (b, d, p, and q) drawn tactilely on head surfaces. To answer which letter was drawn, the participants can adopt either a self-centered perspective or a decentered one (i.e., centered on a body part or on an external location). The participants' responses can be used, in turn, to infer the way the left-right and top-bottom letters' axes are assigned with respect to the left-right and top-bottom axes of their body. In order to evaluate the influence of body posture, the ambiguous letters were drawn on the participants' forehead, left, and right surfaces of the head, with the head aligned or rotated in yaw relative to the trunk. In order to evaluate the role of external information, the participants completed the task with their eyes open in one session and closed in another one. The results obtained in control participants revealed that their preferred perspective varied with body posture but not with vision. Different results were obtained with the deafferented patients who overall do not show any significant effect of their body posture on their preferred perspective. This result suggests that the orientation of their self is not influenced by their physical body. There was an effect of vision for only one of the two patients. The deafferented patients rely on strategies that are more prone to interindividual differences, which highlights the crucial role of somatosensory information in adopting self-centered spatial perspectives.

A natural clay (Mn) modified with γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (Mn-S) and silver (Mn-S-Ag) were evaluated as a potential adsorption media for nitrate removal from water. These materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta-potential, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analyses. First, the adsorption capacity of the Mn-S clay for Ag(+) was studied. The cation adsorption capacity was almost three times greater for Mn-S than for Mn because a metal-amino group complex is favored. Second, the nitrate adsorption on Mn-S and Mn-S-Ag was studied as a function of contact time, pH, temperature and adsorbent dosage using batch techniques. In the absence of Ag(+), [Formula: see text] adsorption was high at low pH and the amount of adsorbed nitrate decreased as the pH increased. For the Mn-S, the following monolayer adsorption capacities were obtained: Qmax = 0.80, 0.72 and 0.68 mmol [Formula: see text]/g at pH 3, 5 and 7, respectively, whereas for the Mn-S-Ag the values obtained were: Qmax = 0.77, 0.74 and 0.42 mmol [Formula: see text]/g at pH 3, 5 and 7, respectively. From the results obtained, [Formula: see text] adsorption occurs over [Formula: see text] surface groups without involving the Ag(+) cation in the adsorption process.
