Restorers and curators in museums sometimes find it difficult to accurately segment areas of paintings that have been contaminated with other pigments or areas that need to be restored, and work on the painting needs to be carried out with minimum possible damage. It is therefore necessary to develop measurement systems and methods that facilitate this task in the least invasive way possible. The aim of this study was to obtain high-dynamic-range (HDR) spectral reflectance and spatial resolution for Dalí's painting entitled Two Figures (1926) in order to segment a small area of black and white pigment that was affected by the contact transfer of reddish pigment from another painting. Using Hypermatrixcam to measure the HDR spectral reflectance developed by this research team, an HDR multispectral cube of 12 images was obtained for the band 470-690 nm in steps of 20 nm. With the values obtained for the spectral reflectance of the HDR cube, the colour of the area of paint affected by the transfer was studied by calculating the a*b* components with the CIELab system. These a*b* values were then used to define two methods of segmenting the exact areas in which there was a transfer of reddish pigment. The area studied in the painting was originally black, and the contamination with reddish pigment occupied 13.87% to 32% of the total area depending on the selected method. These different solutions can be explained because the lower limit is segmentation based on pure pigment and the upper limit considers red as an exclusion of non-black pigment. Over- and under-segmentation is a common problem described in the literature related to pigment selection. In this application case, as red pigment is not original and should be removed, curators will choose the method that selects the highest red area.

The absorption coefficient of a material is classically determined by measuring the transmittance of a homogeneous sample contained within flat optical faces and under collimated illumination. For arbitrary shapes this method is impracticable. The characterization of inhomogeneous or randomly distributed samples such as granules, powders or fibers suffers the same problem. Alternatively, an integrating cavity permits us to illuminate a sample under a homogenous and isotropic light field where the analysis simplifies. We revisit this strategy and present a new formal basis based on simple radiometric laws and principles. We introduce a new concept to describe the absorption: the optical form factor. We tackle a rigorous treatment of several regular forms, including full absorption range and the reflection at its surfaces. We also model and improve an integrating sphere setup to perform reliable measurements. Altogether, it permits achieving simple but general conclusions for samples with arbitrary shape or spatial distribution, from weak to highly absorbing, expanding the applicability of quantitative absorption spectroscopy. Finally, we validate it by measuring different sample formats made of PMMA: a cube, groups of granules and injection molding loose parts. The absorption coefficient of PMMA varies near three orders of magnitude in the explored range (380-1650 nm).

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the effects of confinement due to COVID-19 isolation on visual function, considering insufficient convergence as one of the possible effects of living the whole day in a reduced space. We pass a Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) among 235 people to detect their habits before and after 25 confinement days. The data collection protocol consisted on a Google forms questionnaire included two parts: the first with current data (isolation period) and a second with pre-isolation period data. Differences between the pre-isolation and isolation period were calculated using the related paired T-tests. When statistically significant differences were found, the effect size was estimated using the Cohen's d index (d). The reduction in physical activity levels during confinement were related to the increase in total number of minutes of screen consumption from 433.49 min to 623.97 min per day (d = 0.67; 44.01%). The CISS scores were increased by more than 43% during confinement. The increase in convergence insufficiency was 100% after the studied isolation period of 25 days. The 92.19% increase in television use during 25 days of confinement is not responsible for the increase in convergence insufficiency. However, due to the increase in the use of PCs in this period, there is a notable increase in convergence insufficiency. Therefore, we can conclude that not all increases in tasks with electronic devices are responsible for the increase in convergence insufficiency.

Obesity has been associated with abnormal lipid metabolism and with tissue hypoxia. Human Bruch's membrane (BrM) lipid deposits have been proposed to create a diffusion barrier to metabolic exchange between the choroid and photoreceptors, delaying the regeneration of photopigments. The speed of retinal dark adaptation (DA) is dependent on the regeneration of these photopigments. While the retina is extremely sensitive to hypoxia, the inner retina, which encodes visual contrast, is more affected by hypoxia than the outer retina. This study examines the association between adiposity measures and the time course of DA measured psychophysically through contrast detection to test the functionality of both the outer and inner retina. Cone-mediated DA recovery of contrast threshold (CT) was measured following near-total photopigment bleach for 6 min in 52 healthy eyes of 52 individuals (42.6 ±â€¯18.3 years). Stimuli were sine-wave gratings of low-spatial frequency (1 cycle-per-degree (cpd)) and low luminance (1 cd/m2) generated at the centre of a CRT monitor. CT recovery functions were fitted to an exponential decay model to determine the time constant (τ, seconds) of cone sensitivity recovery, final cone CT (CTf) and CT elevation (CT0). Weight, height and waist circumference (WC) were measured and body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) calculated. Relationships were examined through Spearman correlation and through multiple linear regression using age, optical and adiposity measures as independent variables. The repeatability of cone time constant measurements was estimated by the Bland-Altman method and reported as the coefficient of repeatability (CoR). Mean ±â€¯SD of time constant and CTf were 57.3 ±â€¯27.7 s and -1.78 ±â€¯0.20 log10 units respectively. Cone time constant showed positive Spearman correlation with WC (p = 0.008) and WHtR (p = 0.023) but not with BMI (p = 0.058). Only WHtR emerged as an independent predictor of time constant (p = 0.001). CTf was not correlated with any adiposity measures. Mean cone time constant was 41 s slower in subjects (25%, n = 13) with abdominal obesity (WHtR≥0.5). Mean CTf was not significantly different in subjects with or without abdominal obesity. CoR for cone time constant was ±16 s. In adult subjects, greater abdominal obesity (WHtR) was related to a longer contrast recovery time for cone-mediated DA (time to dark-adapt) suggesting outer retinal dysfunction. Final contrast threshold, preferentially processed by inner retinal cells, was unaffected by abdominal obesity.

The use of non-invasive spectral measurements to control the conservation status is a part of the preventive conservation of artworks which nowadays is becoming increasingly interesting. This paper describes how to use a spectral measuring device and an illumination system specifically designed for such a task in a very large dimension artwork painting (7.8 m wide × 3.5 m high). The system, controlled by a Cartesian robot, allows spectral measurements in a spectral range of 400-780 nm. The measured data array has a total of 2201 circular regions with 5.5 mm spot diameter placed on a square grid. Colorimetric calculations performed from these spectral measurements may be used to characterize color shifts related to reflectance changes in specific areas of the paint. A color shifting from the expected gray has been shown.

RESUMO

Nonimaging optics is a field devoted to the design of optical components for applications such as solar concentration or illumination. In this field, many different techniques have been used to produce optical devices, including the use of reflective and refractive components or inverse engineering techniques. However, many of these optical components are based on translational symmetries, rotational symmetries, or free-form surfaces. We study a new family of nonimaging concentrators called elliptical concentrators. This new family of concentrators provides new capabilities and can have different configurations, either homofocal or nonhomofocal. Translational and rotational concentrators can be considered as particular cases of elliptical concentrators.
