RESUMO

Objective: To review the literature on the neurobiological mechanisms of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in people with dementia.Data Sources: MEDLINE/PubMed, CENTRAL, and PsycNet databases were searched from inception to March 2023.Study Selection: Original studies of any methodology with newly published data on the neurobiological underpinnings of OCS in patients with dementia, regardless of patient age or comorbidity and publication year, were included. The following search terms were used: (Obses* OR compul* OR OCD) AND (cognitive de* OR cognitive dysfunction OR cognitive disfunction OR dementia).Data Extraction: Individual study data were extracted onto a piloted extractions sheet.Results: Patients with dementia and OCS were reported to have atrophy and hypoperfusion of frontal, temporal, striatal, and limbic structures. Serotonergic agents may be efficacious in reducing OCS. One randomized controlled trial of paroxetine in behavioral symptoms of dementia did not show efficacy. Evidence of dopaminergic dysfunction is too sparse to draw conclusions. Microglia dysfunction mediates obsessive-compulsive-like symptoms. Mutations of microtubule-associated protein τ may increase the risk of OCS. Cognitive self-consciousness and obsessive-compulsive-related cognitions may mediate OCS in old age. Dysfunction of the processing of one class of stimuli may increase the salience of other classes of stimuli, leading to OCS.Conclusions: Frontal lobe hypometabolism and temporal lobe atrophy and hypometabolism are unexpected given previous research in obsessive compulsive disorder. Serotonergic agents have encouraging efficacy in case reports but require more specific research.Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2024;26(3):23r03689. AIMS: This study aimed to identify the symptoms associated with early stage SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infections in healthcare professionals (HCPs) using both clinical and laboratory data. METHODS: A total of 1297 patients, admitted between 18 March and 8 April 2020, were stratified according to their risk of developing COVID-19 using their responses to a questionnaire designed to evaluate symptoms and risk conditions. RESULTS: Anosmia/hyposmia (p<0.0001), fever (p<0.0001), body pain (p<0.0001) and chills (p=0.001) were all independent predictors for COVID-19, with a 72% estimated probability for detecting COVID-19 in nasopharyngeal swab samples. Leucopenia, relative monocytosis, decreased eosinophil values, C reactive protein (CRP) and platelets were also shown to be significant independent predictors for COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: The significant clinical features for COVID-19 were identified as anosmia, fever, chills and body pain. Elevated CRP, leucocytes under 5400×109/L and relative monocytosis (>9%) were common among patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. These variables may help, in the absence of reverse transcriptase PCR tests, to identify possible COVID-19 infections during pandemic outbreaks. SUMMARY: From 19 March to 8 April 2020, 1297 patients attended the Polyclinic Piquet Carneiro for COVID-19 detection. HCP data were analysed, and significant clinical features were anosmia, fever, chills and body pain. Elevated CRP, leucopenia and monocytosis were common in COVID-19.

RESUMO

Vision represents one of the main senses for humans to interact with their environment. Our sight relies on the presence of fully functional light sensitive cells - rod and cone photoreceptors - allowing us to see under dim (rods) and bright (cones) light conditions. Photoreceptor degeneration is one of the major causes for vision impairment in industrialized countries and it is highly predominant in the population above the age of 50. Thus, with the continuous increase in life expectancy it will make retinal degeneration reach an epidemic proportion. To date, there is no cure established for photoreceptor loss, but several therapeutic approaches, spanning from neuroprotection, pharmacological drugs, gene therapy, retinal prosthesis, and cell (RPE or photoreceptor) transplantation, have been developed over the last decade with some already introduced in clinical trials. In this review, we focus on current developments in photoreceptor transplantation strategies, its major breakthroughs, current limitations and the next challenges to translate such cell-based approaches toward clinical application.

A taxonomic study of Paspalum L. was carried out using a genetic diversity approach. Thirty accessions representing twenty one different species from the Notata and Linearia groups of Paspalum were studied using restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the amplified ITS ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and from the psbA-trnH of the chloroplast genome (cpDNA). The combined analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast spacer region between the psbA and trnH genes identified genetic polymorphisms. A distance analysis of the molecular data generated a dendrogram which showed the relationships of the two informal groups of Paspalum studied here. Although the distribution of species in the dendrogram was found to be roughly in agreement with previous works based on morphological and cytological data, the results obtained reveal the current artificiality in Paspalum taxonomy. Based on molecular data, a new circumscription of the Notata and Linearia groups is proposed here in order to provide a more accurate delimitation of these groups and contribute to the taxonomy of Paspalum. This study, although preliminary, reveals the potential utility of such a molecular approach for clarifying the taxonomy of closely related taxa.
