RESUMO

The recent detection of the singular diamagnetism of Dirac electrons in a single graphene layer paved a new way of probing 2D quantum materials through the measurement of equilibrium orbital currents which cannot be accessed in usual transport experiments. Among the theoretical predictions is an intriguing orbital paramagnetism at saddle points of the dispersion relation. Here we present magnetization measurements in graphene monolayers aligned on hexagonal boron nitride crystals. Besides the sharp diamagnetic McClure response at the Dirac point, we detect extra diamagnetic singularities at the satellite Dirac points of the moiré lattice. Surrounding these diamagnetic satellite peaks, we also observe paramagnetic peaks located at the chemical potential of the saddle points of the graphene moiré band structure and relate them to the presence of van Hove logarithmic singularities in the density of states. These findings reveal the long ago predicted anomalous paramagnetic orbital response in 2D systems when the Fermi energy is tuned to the vicinity of saddle points.

RESUMO

Climate change is stressing irrigation water sources, necessitating the evaluation of alternative waters such as harvested rainwater to determine if they meet water quality and food safety standards. We collected water, soil, and produce samples between June and August 2019 from two vegetable rain garden (VRG) sites in Frederick, Maryland that harvest rainwater using a first flush system, and deliver this water to produce through subsurface irrigation. The raised VRG beds include layers of gravel, sand, and soil that act as filters. We recorded the average surface soil moisture in each bed as well as antecedent precipitation. All water (n = 29), soil (n = 55), and produce (n = 57) samples were tested for generic E. coli using standard membrane filtration, and water samples were also tested for Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes by selective enrichment. No Salmonella spp. or L. monocytogenes isolates were detected in any water samples throughout the study period. Average E. coli levels from all harvested rainwater samples at both sites (1.2 and 24.4 CFU/100 mL) were well below the Good Agricultural Practices food safety guidelines. Only 7 % (3/44) of produce samples from beds irrigated with harvested rainwater were positive for E. coli. E. coli levels in soil samples were positively associated with average surface soil moisture (r2 = 0.13, p = 0.007). Additionally, E. coli presence in water samples was marginally associated with a shorter length of antecedent dry period (fewer days since preceding rainfall) (p = 0.058). Our results suggest that harvested rainwater collected through a first flush system and applied to produce through subsurface irrigation meets current food safety standards. Soil moisture monitoring could further reduce E. coli contamination risks from harvested rainwater-irrigated produce. First flush and subsurface irrigation systems could help mitigate climate change-related water challenges while protecting food safety and security.

RESUMO

The electronic properties of graphene have been intensively investigated over the past decade. However, the singular orbital magnetism of undoped graphene, a fundamental signature of the characteristic Berry phase of graphene's electronic wave functions, has been challenging to measure in a single flake. Using a highly sensitive giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor, we have measured the gate voltagedependent magnetization of a single graphene monolayer encapsulated between boron nitride crystals. The signal exhibits a diamagnetic peak at the Dirac point whose magnetic field and temperature dependences agree with long-standing theoretical predictions. Our measurements offer a means to monitor Berry phase singularities and explore correlated states generated by the combined effects of Coulomb interactions, strain, or moiré potentials.

RESUMO

We probe the high frequency emission of a carbon nanotube based Josephson junction and compare it to its dc Josephson current. The ac emission is probed by coupling the carbon nanotube to an on-chip detector (a superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction), via a coplanar waveguide resonator. The measurement of the photoassisted current of the detector gives direct access to the signal emitted by the carbon nanotube. We focus on the gate regions that exhibit Kondo features in the normal state and demonstrate that when the dc supercurrent is enhanced by the Kondo effect, the ac Josephson effect is strongly reduced. This result is compared to numerical renormalization group theory and is attributed to a transition between the singlet ground state and the doublet excited state which is enabled only when the junction is driven out-of-equilibrium by a voltage bias.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Characterize and determine the frequency of dissections of the supra-aortic arteries (SAA) and injuries to the cervical spine and pharyngolaryngeal cartilages viewed on CT scans after an attempted suicide by hanging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, single-centre study of all patients admitted for attempted suicide by hanging between January 2010 and June 2017 who received CT angiography of the SAA. Search for signs of dissection of the cervical arteries and injuries to the brain, spinal column and pharyngeal and laryngeal cartilages. The results were compared with the initial clinical severity, which was assessed indirectly by whether patients were initially admitted in an intensive care unit (ICU) or in an emergency department (ED). RESULTS: Out of 162 patients included, 4 presented with SAA dissection (2.5%), comprising 3 vertebral arteries and 1 external carotid artery. The cases in question were of 4 men, all in cardiac arrest on arrival and all were treated in ICU. Of the most serious cases, 18/72 (25%) had anoxia-related injuries and one also presented with a C2 fracture. No vascular lesions or signs of cerebral anoxia were observed in the 90 ED patients. Nevertheless, pharyngeal and laryngeal fractures were observed in both groups, with no significant difference. CONCLUSION: In our study, 2.5% of CT angiograms performed after an attempted hanging revealed SAA dissection. Crucially, only most severe patients, who have been immediately admitted to ICU suffered SAA. These results call into question the systematic indication of this exam in cases of hanging attempts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The ICA is the most common site of cervical artery dissection. Prompt and reliable identification of the mural hematoma is warranted when a dissection is clinically suspected. The purpose of this study was to assess to capacity of a standard DWI sequence acquired routinely on the brain to detect dissecting hematoma related to cervical ICA dissections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of a cohort of 110 patients younger than 55 years of age (40 women; mean age, 46.79 years) admitted at the acute phase of a neurologic deficit, headache, or neck pain and investigated by at least a standard 3T diffusion-weighted sequence of the brain. Among them were 50 patients (14 women; mean age, 46.72 years) with subsequently confirmed ICA dissection. In the whole anonymized cohort, both a senior and junior radiologist separately assessed, on the DWI sequences only, the presence of a crescent-shaped or circular hypersignal projecting on the subpetrosal segment of the ICA arteries, assuming that it would correspond to a mural hematoma related to an ICA dissection. RESULTS: The senior radiologist found 46 subpetrosal hyperintensities in 43/50 patients with ICA dissection and none in patients without dissection (sensitivity, 86%; specificity, 100%). The junior radiologist found 48 subpetrosal hyperintensities in 45/50 patients with dissection and none in patients without dissection (sensitivity, 90%; specificity, 100%). CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort, a standard DWI sequence performed on the brain at the acute phase of a stroke or for a clinical suspicion of dissection detected nearly 90% of cervical ICA dissections.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the enhanced robustness of the supercurrent through graphene-based Josephson junctions in which strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) are induced. We compare the persistence of a supercurrent at high out-of-plane magnetic fields between Josephson junctions with graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride and graphene on WS_{2}, where strong SOIs are induced via the proximity effect. We find that in the shortest junctions both systems display signatures of induced superconductivity, characterized by a suppressed differential resistance at a low current, in magnetic fields up to 1 T. In longer junctions, however, only graphene on WS_{2} exhibits induced superconductivity features in such high magnetic fields, and they even persist up to 7 T. We argue that these robust superconducting signatures arise from quasiballistic edge states stabilized by the strong SOIs induced in graphene by WS_{2}.

RESUMO

Demonstrating the topological protection of Andreev states in Josephson junctions is an experimental challenge. In particular the telltale 4π periodicity expected for the current phase relation has remained elusive, because of fast parity breaking processes. It was predicted that low temperature ac susceptibility measurements could reveal the topological protection of quantum spin Hall edge states by probing their low energy Andreev spectrum at finite frequency. We have performed such a microwave probing of a phase-biased Josephson junction built around a bismuth nanowire, a predicted second order topological insulator, and which was previously shown to host one-dimensional ballistic edge states. We find absorption peaks at the Andreev level crossings, whose temperature and frequency dependencies point to protected topological crossings with an accuracy limited by the electronic temperature of our experiment.

RESUMO

Abiotic factors affect cnidarian-algal symbiosis and, if severe enough, can result in bleaching. Increased temperature and light are well characterized causes of bleaching, but other factors like salinity can also stress the holobiont. In cnidarian-dinoflagellate systems, the expression of host genes, including heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), changes due to thermal and light stress. In this experiment, we characterized to what extent salinity stress affects Hsp70 expression in the holobiont by simultaneously measuring host and symbiont Hsp70 expression in response to up to 8 h of hypo- and hypersaline conditions in the sea anemone Exaiptasia pallida and its intracellular symbiont Symbiodinium minutum. We show that E. pallida Hsp70 expression increases (6-11-fold) at high salinities whereas Symbiodinium Hsp70 expression shows little change (1.4-2.6-fold). These data suggest that cnidarian Hsp70 response is similar across multiple abiotic stressors further validating the Hsp70 gene as a biomarker for abiotic stress.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to describe the nature and incidence of hand injuries caused by snowblowers, as well as the accident conditions and accident prevention. We conducted a retrospective evaluation over ten consecutive winters. Nine patients were included. All were men with an average age of 49.7 years (17-71). The accidents occurred at home in seven out of nine patients. The machine was running in 50% of the injury events. In most cases, the injuries occurred when the patient tried to unclog snow from the lateral discharge chute. Only four out of the nine patients had read the instructions or received instructions from the salesperson. The dominant hand was injured in 7 out of 9 patients. An average of 2.7 fingers were injured. The longest fingers were most commonly injured: 8 middle fingers, 7 ring fingers, 4 little fingers, 2 indexes and 1 thumb. All the fractures were open. Three patients were operated on several times. In 7 out of 9 cases, the patients had sequelae such as amputation. The mean time off work was 11.4 weeks (3-24). All the patients were experienced snowblower users (9 years and 57th use on average). Snowblower accidents are very mutilating. Prevention must include protected access to blades and better verbal and written safety warnings.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal humerus in patients over the age of 65 remain a therapeutic challenge. Treatment options include conservative treatment, internal fixation or total elbow arthroplasty. The complications of these different treatment options were evaluated in a multicentre study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four hundred and ninety-seven medical records were evaluated. A retrospective study was performed in 410 cases: 34 received conservative treatment, 289 internal fixation and 87 underwent total elbow arthroplasty. A prospective study was performed in 87 cases: 22 received conservative treatment, 53 internal fixation, and 12 underwent total elbow arthroplasty. Patients were evaluated after at least 6 months follow-up. RESULTS: The rate of complications was 30% in the retrospective study and 29% in the prospective study. The rate of complications in the conservative treatment group was 60%, and the main complication was essentially malunion. The rate of complications was 44% in the internal fixation group and included neuropathies, mechanical failure or wound dehiscence. Although complications only developed in 23% of total elbow arthroplasties, they were often more severe than those following other treatments. DISCUSSION: Complications develop in one out of three patients over 65 with distal humerus fractures. Three main types of complications were identified. Neuropathies especially of the ulnar nerve, especially during arthroplasty, must always be identified, the nerve requiring isolation and transposition. Bone complications, due principally to mechanical failure, were found following internal fixation. Despite technical progress, care must be taken not to favor excessive utilization of this treatment option in complex fractures on fragile bone. Although there were relatively fewer complications with total elbow arthroplasty they were more difficult to treat. Ossifications were frequent whatever the surgical option and can jeopardize the functional outcome.

RESUMO

A mesoscopic hybrid normal-metal-superconductor ring is characterized by a dense Andreev spectrum with a flux dependent minigap. To probe the dynamics of such a ring, we measure its linear response to a high frequency flux, in a wide frequency range, with a multimode superconducting resonator. We find that the current response contains, besides the well-known dissipationless Josephson contribution, a large dissipative component. At high frequency compared to the minigap and low temperature, we find that the dissipation is due to transitions across the minigap. In contrast, at lower frequency there is a range of temperature for which dissipation is caused predominantly by the relaxation of the Andreev states' population. This dissipative response, related via the fluctuation dissipation theorem to a nonintuitive zero frequency thermal noise of supercurrent, is characterized by a phase dependence dominated by its second harmonic, as predicted long ago but never observed thus far.

RESUMO

The supercurrent that establishes between two superconductors connected through a normal N mesoscopic link is carried by quasiparticule states localized within the link, the "Andreev bound states (ABS)". Whereas the dc properties of this supercurrent in SNS junctions are now well understood, its dynamical properties are still an unresolved issue. In this letter we probe this dynamics by inductively coupling an NS ring to a multimode superconducting resonator, thereby implementing both a phase bias and current detection at high frequency. Whereas at very low temperatures we essentially measure the phase derivative of the supercurrent, at higher temperature we find a surprisingly strong frequency dependence in the current response of the ring: the ABS do not follow adiabatically the phase modulation. This experiment also illustrates a new tool to probe the fundamental time scales of phase coherent systems that are decoupled from macroscopic normal contacts and thermal baths.

RESUMO

We investigate conductance fluctuations as a function of carrier density n and magnetic field in diffusive mesoscopic samples made from monolayer and bilayer graphene. We show that the fluctuations' correlation energy and field, which are functions of the diffusion coefficient, have fundamentally different variations with n, illustrating the contrast between massive and massless carriers. The field dependent fluctuations are nearly independent of n, but the n-dependent fluctuations are not universal and are largest at the charge neutrality point. We also measure the second-order conductance fluctuations (mesoscopic rectification). Its field asymmetry, due to electron-electron interaction, decays with conductance, as predicted for diffusive systems.

RESUMO

Transport and elastic scattering times, tau{tr} and tau{e}, are experimentally determined from the carrier density dependence of the magnetoconductance of monolayer and bilayer graphene. Both times and their dependences on carrier density are found to be very different in the monolayer and the bilayer. However, their ratio tau{tr}/tau{e} is found to be close to 1.8 in the two systems and nearly independent of the carrier density. These measurements give insight on the nature (neutral or charged) and range of the scatterers. Comparison with theoretical predictions suggests that the main scattering mechanism in our samples is due to strong (resonant) scatterers of a range shorter than the Fermi wavelength, likely candidates being vacancies, voids, adatoms or short-range ripples.

RESUMO

We investigate weak localization in metallic networks etched in a two-dimensional electron gas between 25 and 750 mK when electron-electron (e-e) interaction is the dominant phase breaking mechanism. We show that, at the highest temperatures, the contributions arising from trajectories that wind around the rings and trajectories that do not are governed by two different length scales. This is achieved by analyzing separately the envelope and the oscillating part of the magnetoconductance. For T > or approximately 0.3 K we find L phi env proportional T(-1/3) for the envelope and L phi osc proportional, T(-1/2) for the oscillations, in agreement with the prediction for a single ring [T. Ludwig and A. D. Mirlin, Phys. Rev. B 69, 193306 (2004); 10.1103/PhysRevB.69.193306C. Texier and G. Montambaux, Phys. Rev. B 72, 115327 (2005); 10.1103/PhysRevB.72.115327C. Texier, Phys. Rev. RESUMO

Bioassays were conducted to determine the efficacy of barley straw liquor in controlling algal growth of 12 freshwater species of algae representing three divisions. Barley straw liquor inhibited the growth of three nuisance algae common in freshwater: Synura petersenii, Dinobyron sp., and Microcystis aeruginosa. However, Selenastrum capricornutum, Spirogyra sp., Oscillatoria lutea var. contorta, and Navicula sp. had significantly increased growth in the presence of straw liquor. The growth of the remainder, Ulothrix fimbriata, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Chlorella vulgaris, Anabaena flos-aquae, and Synedra sp. showed no significant difference from controls. In a related field study, we treated four of six ponds with barley straw and monitored their chlorophyll a levels for one growing season. While phytoplankton populations in all ponds decreased in midsummer, the phytoplankton biomass in treated ponds did not differ significantly from that of control ponds, suggesting that the application of barley straw had no effect on algal growth in these systems.

RESUMO

The low temperature magnetoconductance of a large array of quantum coherent loops exhibits Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations with a periodicity corresponding to 1/2 flux quantum per loop. We show that the measurement of the harmonics content provides an accurate way to determine the electron phase-coherence length L(phi) in units of the lattice length with no adjustable parameters. We use this method to determine L(phi) in a square network realized from a 2D electron gas in a GaAs/GaAlAs heterojunction, with only a few conducting channels. The temperature dependence follows a power law T(-1/3) from 1.3 K to 25 mK with no saturation, as expected for 1D diffusive electronic motion and electron-electron scattering as the main decoherence mechanism.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: : To ascertain (1) whether the taste characteristics of a conventionally-salted (150 mM NaCl) soup can be reproduced in soups of substantially lower NaCl level with the help of added glutamate, and (2) whether calcium diglutamate (CDG) is equivalent to monosodium glutamate (MSG) in its effect on the taste of soup. DESIGN: : Cross-sectional, with multiple measurements on each subject. SETTING: : Healthy university students. SUBJECTS: : A total of 107 volunteers, recruited by on-campus advertising. METHODS: : Subjects tasted 32 soups, with all possible combinations of four NaCl concentrations (0-150 mM), four glutamate levels (0-43 mM), and two glutamate types (MSG, CDG). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: : Ratings of each soup on six scales (liking, flavour-intensity, familiarity, naturalness of taste, richness of taste, saltiness). RESULTS: : A 50 or 85 mM NaCl soup with added CDG or MSG is rated as high as, or higher than, a 150 mM NaCl soup free of added glutamate on five of the six scales (the exception being saltiness). CDG and MSG have equivalent effects. CONCLUSIONS: : Addition of glutamate allows substantial reductions in Na content of soup, without significant deterioration of taste. CDG and MSG have equivalent effects, but use of CDG permits a greater reduction in Na intake.
