RESUMO

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infection has recently become a pandemic disease around the world, and its risk factors have not fully evaluated. This study aimed to compare the serum vitamin D (Vit D) and zinc levels in patients infected with novel coronavirus and healthy volunteers (HVs). METHODS: This was a single-center, cross-sectional study conducted on 56 patients (32 severe cases and 24 nonsevere) admitted to the COVID-19 ward and 46 HVs living in Esfarayen City, North Khorasan Province of Iran. Serum levels of Vit D and zinc in admitted patients to the COVID-19 ward and HVs were measured. RESULTS: The average levels of serum Vit D in severe cases, nonsevere cases, and HVs were 31.03 ± 15.49, 37.25 ± 18.49, and 39.33 ± 14.83, respectively (P = 0.05). Moreover, the average concentrations of serum zinc in severe cases, nonsevere cases, and HVs were 31.03 ± 15.49, 37.25 ± 18.49, and 39.33 ± 14.83, respectively (P = 0.01). Mortality rate, reinfection (for 5 months), and length of hospital stay in severe cases were higher than in nonsevere cases (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Results showed that severe cases had lower levels of Vit D than did other groups and were marginally significant. Also, severe cases had a significantly low level of zinc when compared with nonsevere cases and HVs. Levels of Vit D and zinc can affect the incidence of COVID-19 infection.

RESUMO

Introduction: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PICs) patency techniques such as flushing are being developed. According to some studies, flushing can be used continuously or in pulsatile forms. This study aimed to compare the effects of pulsatile flushing (PF) and continuous flushing (CF) on time and type of PICs patency. Methods: In this double-blind randomized clinical trial, 71 patients were randomly assigned into two groups of PF (n=35) and CF (n=36). The PF protocol was performed as successive injections of 1 mL normal saline (N/S) per second (sec) with a delay of less than 1 sec until the completion of 5 mL of solution. However, CF protocol was performed by injecting 5 mL N/S within 5 sec without any delay before and after each medicine administration. Data related to the time and type of PICs patency were collected using a patency checklist every 12 hours (h) up to 96 h. The statistical analysis was done by R statistical software (Version 3.5.1). Results: The results showed that the number of PICs remaining open was not significantly different between PF and CF groups during 96 h. The highest number of PICs excluded from the study was related to the time of 96 h as a result of partial patency in the two groups. Conclusion: There was no difference between CF and PF regarding the time and type of PICs patency. Thus, both techniques can be used to maintain the catheter patency.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effect of educational intervention based on the Pender's health promotion model (HPM) on lifestyle and self-efficacy of the patients with diabetic foot ulcer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this clinical trial conducted in 2019, 74 patients based on inclusion criteria were selected through convenience sampling and allocated to two groups of intervention (n = 37) and control (n = 37) using the randomized permuted block method. In this study, Demographic characteristics and localized Diabetes Foot Care Self-Efficacy Scale and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire for diabetic foot care were completed by two groups. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS 16 and through descriptive and comparative statistics, independent t-test, paired t-test, and ANCOVA. RESULTS: After the intervention, the mean score of the intervention group significantly increased in all lifestyle dimensions (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the mean score of self-effcacy increased in the intervention group after the intervention (P < 0.001). Comparing the change in the mean scores of lifestyle and self-efficacy in both the groups 50 days after the intervention, an increase was observed in the mean scores of self-efficacy (P < 0.001) as well as those of lifestyle and its dimensions in the intervention group compared to those in the control group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Educational intervention based on the Pender's HPM can promote the self-efficacy, lifestyle, and its dimensions in the patients with diabetic foot ulcers. The results of this study can be used in educational interventions aiming at patients with diabetic foot ulcers to change their lifestyle and improve their self-efficacy.

RESUMO

Introduction: In view of the contradictory results for the use of cold tubes for the purpose of enhancing nasogastric tube insertion success there is a pressing need for further research in this area. This study aimed to determine the effect of using cold versus regular temperature nasogastric tube on successful nasogastric tube insertion for patients referring to toxicology emergency department. Methods: This study is a clinical trial with two groups design of 65 patients admitted to toxicology emergency department who were divided into two groups by random allocation. Nasogastric tubes used in the intervention group had been stored in a refrigerator at 2°-8° C while the ones employed in the control group had been maintained at the room temperature of 22-28° C. Nasogastric tube insertions in both groups were done by the investigator according to standard methods. The data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 13. Results: The placement of nasogastric tube was done in the first attempt with 27 (%84.4) of the subjects in the control group and 33 (%100.0) in the intervention group. The chi-square test results showed that the frequency of the number of attempts for gastric intubation in subjects between the two groups was statistically significant. Conclusion: Cooling gastric tubes reduces the time required for nasogastric intubation. Thus, it is suggested that the gastric tubes be cooled before the application of the procedure so as to reduce complications, increase patient comfort and save nurses time.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases that is now widely spread around the world, and day by day the number of patients is increasing. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of educational intervention on physical activity, nutrition and laboratory parameters in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS: This semi-experimental study was performed from March to October 2015 on 100 patients with type 2 diabetes who referred to the Niknejad health center. The type of sampling was simple random. Data were collected using a questionnaire including demographic questions, assessment of nutritional status and physical activity, history of diabetes, physical measurements and laboratory parameters of patients. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16, and descriptive and analytical tests (paired-samples t-test) and the results were significant at the level of (p<0.05). RESULTS: In present study, body measurements, the mean number of units of fruit and vegetable intake per day, type of oil consumption, the mean number of days of fish intake per week or the mean number of days with intense physical activity per week, had no significant difference before and after the intervention, while the variables of FBS level (p<0.003), rate of HbA1c (p<0.027), the mean number of days of fruit intake (p<0.001) and vegetable intake (p<0.037) per week and the mean number of days with moderate physical activity (p<0.03) of patients, had significant difference before and after the intervention. CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, to improve BMI, fish intake, type of oil consumption and also increased daily fruit and vegetable intake in these patients, a variety of educational-supportive interventions are recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: These days, hookah smoking has gained popularity among people in many communities, especially among youths and students, and more attention to this issue seems necessary. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting hookah smoking among Sabzevar Azad University students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on university students in Sabzevar, Iran in 2014. The questionnaire was developed and its validity and reliability were assessed. Three hundred six male students of Sabzevar Azad University were selected by simple random sampling and questionnaires were filled out by them. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS software and the Chi-Square and Independent-samples t-test. RESULTS: The results showed that 47.7% of the participants had a history of smoking hookah. The main factors affecting hookah smoking from participants' point of view were: filling leisure time, availability of hookah, positive social appearance, friends' invitation and relief from anxieties. Chi-Square tests showed that there was no significant relationship between fathers' level of education (p=0.41), mothers' level of education (p=0.46), fathers' job (p=0.18), mothers' job (p=0.53) and students' current grade (p=0.41) with hookah smoking. The study showed significant relationship between present hookah smoking and awareness about complications of the hookah (p=0.01). CONCLUSION: Interventions to reduce and quit hookah smoking among students should include several items, such as teaching problem-solving skills to fill leisure time properly and to deal with the temptation of hookah smoking, as well as teaching refusal skills at the invitation of friends for hookah.
