RESUMO

We report on the conjugated polyelectrolyte 12 mM poly[9,9-bis(4-sulfonylbutoxyphenyl) fluorene-2,7-diyl-2,2'-bithiophene] (PBS-PF2T) mixed in concentrated aqueous 680 mM tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E4) in bulk and thin films. A blue-shift in the fluorescence spectrum demonstrates breakup of PBS-PF2T aggregates in bulk aqueous C12E4. Small-angle X-ray scattering data indicate that this mixture follows a very similar phase behaviour to binary mixtures of a pure surfactant with water, including a micellar phase below about 20 °C, a lamellar phase in between about 20 and 70 °C and a proposed coexistence of water and the liquid surfactant solution above 70 °C. Molecular dynamics simulations reproduce these transitions and suggest that PBS-PF2T is incorporated into the surfactant headgroup region, and is, on average, perpendicular to the alkyl chains. In wet thin films, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering shows that the phase window for the lamellar phase becomes much narrower, located at about 30-34 °C. Weakly ordered phases exist both below and above these temperatures. These phases are isotropic, but lamellae become aligned in a stacked manner on the surface whether approached from low or high temperatures. Dry films are disordered but can be reversibly ordered and disordered and aligned and misaligned by maintaining the temperature at 30-34 °C and switching relative outside humidity between 32% and 100%.

RESUMO

Data are reported on the triplet states of a series of fluorene-based A-alt-B type alternating copolymers based on pulse radiolysis-energy transfer and flash photolysis experiments. From the pulse radiolysis experiments, spectra are given for eight copolymers involving phenylene, thiophene, benzothiadiazole, and oligothienylenevinylene groups. Quantum yields for triplet-state formation (PhiT) have been obtained by flash photolysis following laser excitation and in one case by photoacoustic calorimetry. In addition, yields of sensitized formation of singlet oxygen have been determined by time-resolved phosphorescence and are, in general, in excellent agreement with the PhiT values. In all cases, the presence of thiophene units is seen to increase intersystem-crossing quantum yields, probably because of the presence of the heavy sulfur atom. However, with the poly[2,7-(9,9-bis(2'-ethylhexyl)fluorene)-alt-1,4-phenylene] (PFP), thiophene S,S-dioxide (PFTSO2) and benzothiadiazole (F8BT) copolymers, low yields of triplet formation are observed. With three of the copolymers, the energies of the triplet states have been determined. With PFP, the triplet energy is virtually identical to that of poly[2,7-(9,9-bis(2'-ethylhexyl)fluorene)]. In contrast, with fluorene-thiophene copolymers PFaT and PF3T, the triplet energies are closer to those of thiophene oligomers, indicating that there is significant conjugation between fluorene and thiophene units but also that there is a more localized triplet state than with the homopolymers.

RESUMO

The absorption and fluorescence spectra, lifetimes and quantum yields of a series of triarylaminequinoxaline bipolar compounds, with and without the bulky dehydroabietic acid group, have been studied in toluene solution. This bulky group is introduced to improve solubility and thermal properties of these systems. It is shown that this does not affect their spectral or photophysical behavior. The compounds show relatively strong fluorescence, with the emission maximum strongly dependent upon the substituents present. Oxidation potentials have also been determined in acetonitrile solution, and again indicate that introduction of the resin acid moiety has no effect on these properties.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present descriptive study was to identify, through a retrospective analysis of records, the nature of nursing interventions as well as to establish the relationship between the nature of these interventions and the problems found. The sample was formed by 184 records of patients in their first nursing consultation at the Adult Chemotherapy Outpatient Unit of Hospital São Paulo from January to June, 1997; 37 records were selected at random: 19 male and 18 female patients. Results showed the predominance of interventions centered in patients' psychobiological needs. Educative interventions were more frequently performed when related to patients psychosocial needs. The correspondence between the identified problems and proposed interventions was evidenced when the psychobiological needs were met.

RESUMO

The chondroitin sulfate excreted in the urine of 10 patients with cancer of the head and neck and 27 healthy subjects was analyzed. The disaccharide products formed from chondroitin sulfate excreted by these 10 patients by action of chondroitinase ABC show a significant (P < 0.0001) relative increase of nonsulfated disaccharide (35.6% +/- 5.7%) when compared with the nonsulfated disaccharide (10.0% +/- 0.9%) present in the chondroitin sulfate of 27 healthy subjects. In 6 patients the structure of the excreted compound was analyzed up to 4 months after surgery. After removal of the cancer, the percent amounts of the nonsulfated disaccharide tend to approach the values found for the chondroitin sulfate of healthy subjects. A significant (P < 0.0001) change in the ratio of urinary chondroitin sulfate and heparan sulfate and a decrease in the electrophoretic migration of chondroitin sulfate were also observed. All of the patients with head and neck cancer analyzed so far have shown this structural anomaly of urinary chondroitin sulfate. This assay may be useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of cancer therapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of rotavirus in the etiology of acute diarrhea in children from Natal city, RN, Brazil and investigate the existence or not of a seasonal distribution of this pathogen in our environment.METHODS: Fecal samples from 1,903 children (boys and girls) with ages ranging from 1 month to 10 years, living in Natal-RN, who presented acute diarrhea episodes in a period from January 1996 to December 1998, were analyzed. We searched viral particles directly in the feces by a passive agglutination reaction using anti-rotavirus specific-group monoclonal antibodies coated latex particles.RESULTS: 151 children (7.9%) of the studied population presented a positive reaction, revealing the presence of rotavirus particles in feces. Considering, however, only the children (ages from 1 to 24 months) who are more susceptible to rotavirus infection, we verified that from 1,065 examined children, 136 of them (12.8%) presented positive reaction for rotavirus, and the great majority of all children with positive reaction (96.3%) had ages ranging from 6 to 24 months. Analysis of the distribution of the cases of rotavirus infection in the three year revealed that the incidence of infection was higher in July, August, and September.CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated rotavirus infections have an important role in the etiology of acute diarrhea cases. The majority of the acute diarrhea cases positive for rotavirus occurred during the first two years of life, reaching mainly children from 6 to 24 months, with the highest incidence of infection during the months of July, August, and September.

RESUMO

Respiratory mechanics and thoracoabdominal morphometry were determined in four sets of animal experiments before and after surgery. In group RRA the rectus abdominus muscles were removed; in RRAH rats the muscle resection was followed by lung hyperinflation; in PPM animals the defect was repaired by suturing a polypropylene mesh (Marlex); and in PPMH lung hyperinflation was performed after abdominal wall reconstruction. Lung and chest wall elastances, and chest wall viscoelastic/inhomogeneous pressures increased in RRA, RRAH and PPM groups. Static lung elastance was progressively smaller in the following order: RRA, PPM, and PPMH. In conclusion, removal of the rectus abdominus muscles and abdominal wall reconstruction could account for higher energy losses against viscoelastic and elastic forces acting on the chest wall, and these are related to a cephalad deviation of the diaphragm. Furthermore, hyperinflation reverses lung elastic modification after abdominal wall reconstruction with PPM, without beneficial effects in the presence of abdominal wall defect.
