RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and right aberrant sub-clavian artery (ASA) separately is relatively common in general population, and much higher in some disorders. Surprisingly, coexistence of both valve and vessel anomalies has only been reported in single cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2008 to 2016, in a single, high-volume tertiary cardiac centre, patients who underwent chest computed tomography (CT) for various reasons, were retrospectively screened for the presence of right ASA. RESULTS: Seventy-two patients with either right or left ASA were identified by CT. Among them 7 cases of BAV and right ASA coexistence were identified. Additionally, 1 case with coexisting common origin of carotid arteries (COCA) was visualised in this subgroup. CONCLUSIONS: Although coexistence of ASA and BAV has not been reported in paediatric population, it has been diagnosed in very few adults as well as in our series. Additional presence of COCA in this group seems to be very rare. From practical point of view, heart cannulation via the radial artery and subsequent ASA may be challenging. Similarly, COCA presence may have surgical implications during corrective procedures.

RESUMO

The leading priority for the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union was to reduce health inequalities across European societies, and, within its framework, prevention and control of respiratory diseases in children. This very important paper contain proposal of international cooperation on the prevention, early detection and monitoring of asthma and allergic diseases in childhood which will be undertaken by the EU member countries as a result of EU conclusion developed during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This will result in collaboration in the field of chronic diseases, particularly respiratory diseases, together with the activity of the network of national institutions and NGOs in this area. Paper also contains extensive analysis of the socio-economic, political, epidemiological, technological and medical factors affecting the prevention and control of childhood asthma and allergy presented during Experts presidential conference organized in Warsaw-Ossa 21-22 September 2011.

RESUMO

2-chlorodeoxyadenosine (2-CdA) has been demonstrated to be a neurotoxic agent when used at significantly greater doses than currently recommended for clinical use. In this report we describe a case of a 37-years-old man lymphoplasmacytoid malignant lymphoma and pre-existing paraneoplastic neurological syndrome who died of an apparent rapidly progressive sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy after completing treatment with two courses of low-doses of 2-CdA.

RESUMO

4'-epidoxorubicin (4'-epiDXR) was compared with doxorubicin (DXR) for myocardial effects in rabbits. Histologically, both drugs when given for six weeks induced a high incidence of diffused myocardial damage. The myocardial damage was less evident in rabbits treated with 4'-epiDXR than DXR for 3 weeks. Functionally 4'-epiDXR like DXR significantly reduced cardiac index (CI), stroke index (SI) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP).
