OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion of the combined "Biao-Ben" acupoints on autonomic nervous function and related factors in rats with irritable bowel syndrome diarrhea (IBS-D). METHODS: Female SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, IBS-D model, "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination, and conventional acupoint combination groups, with 10 rats in each group. The IBS-D model was established by repeated chronic stress stimulation (water or food deprivation, painful tail pinching, exposure to a 43 ℃ environment, forced swimming in 4 ℃ water, day-night inversion and horizontal vibration) for 28 d, and followed by acute restraint stress (wrapping of shoulders, forelimbs and trunk) for 1 h and gavage of senna fluid, once daily for 28 d. For rats of the "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination group, acupuncture and moxibustion were applied to "Guanyuan" (CV4), bilateral "Zusanli" (ST36), and "Neiguan" (PC6), and for rats of the conventional acupoint combination group, acupuncture and moxibustion were applied to bilateral ST36, "Tianshu"(ST25), and "Shangjuxu"(ST37). Both acupuncture and suspension moxibustion treatment were conduced for 15 min, once daily for 21 days. The fecal water content was calculated, and the spontaneous activity behaviors (total distance of crossing and the number of squares crossed in 5 min) were evaluated by open-field tests. The abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) was detected. H.E. staining was used to observe the histopathological changes of colon tissue. The domains of heart rate variability (HRV) including low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and LF/HF were analyzed using an electrophysiological recorder. The contents of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in serum and noradrenaline (NE) in plasma were detected using ELISA. The expression level and immunoactivity of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in colon tissues were detected by Western blot and immunofluorescence histochemistry, separately. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the model group had a striking increase in fecal water content, AWR scores at 20, 40, 60, and 80 mm Hg, NE and CGRP contents, LF, LF/HF, and 5-HT protein expression and immunoactivity (P<0.01), and an obvious decrease in the total distance of crossing, the number of squares crossed, and HF of HRV (P<0.01). In comparison with the model group, the fecal water content, AWR scores at 20, 40, 60, and 80 mm Hg, NE and CGRP contents, LF, LF/HF, and 5-HT protein expression and immunoactivity were significantly decreased (P<0.01,P<0.05), while the total distance of cros-sing, number of squares crossed, HF of HRV were considerably increased (P<0.01, P<0.05) in both "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination and conventional acupoint combination groups. The effects of the "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination were apparently superior to those of conventional acupoint combination in down-regulating the fecal water content, AWR score at 20, 40, 60 and 80 mm Hg, NE and CGRP contents, LF, LF/HF, and 5-HT expression and immunoactivity, and in increasing the number of squares crossed, and HF of HRV (P<0.01, P<0.05). HE staining showed no pathological changes in colonic mucosa in all groups. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture and moxibustion stimulation of combined "Biao-Ben" acupoints can effectively improve the symptoms (spontaneous activities, visceral hypersensitivity) of IBS-D model rats, which may be related to its functions in regulating autonomic nervous activities, and down-regulating blood NE and CGRP contents and colonic 5-HT protein expression and immunoactivity, and the effects of "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination are superior to those of conventional acupoint combination.

What is already known about this topic?: Malnutrition continues to be the primary cause of delayed growth and development among students in economically disadvantaged rural areas of China. Ensuring adequate and appropriate dietary intake is crucial for promoting the healthy growth of these students. What is added by this report?: In rural areas of central and western regions in China, the weekly consumption frequencies of meat, eggs, milk, legumes, fruits, and vegetables in 2021 were higher than those in 2019. However, the consumption levels remained relatively low in economically underdeveloped rural areas in 2021. What are the implications for public health practice?: Understanding the frequency of food consumption among students can provide a solid evidence base for the development of policies and strategies aimed at controlling and preventing malnutrition.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acupuncture-moxibustion with "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination (BB) on the serum metabolites and metabolic pathway in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) model rats, so as to explore the mechanisms of BB in the prevention and treatment of IBS. METHODS: Thirty SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, model group, and BB group, with 10 rats in each group. The IBS model was established by the combination of acute stress method and chronic stress method, and the success of the model establishment was evaluated by abdominal wall reflex (AWR). BB group received acupuncture-moxibustion treatment at "Neiguan" (PC6), "Zusanli" (ST36), and "Guanyuan" (CV4) for 15 min, once a day, for a total of 28 days. Bristol's fecal character score was evaluated, and intestinal propulsion rate was calculated. The open-field experiment was used to observe the behaviour of rats. Pathological changes in the colon were observed by H.E. staining. TM widely targeted metabolomics technology was used to detect the metabolic profile of serum samples from 3 groups of rats. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis techniques were combined with database screening to screen differential metabolites, and the KEGG database was utilized to map the enriched metabolic pathway. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, AWR, and the total distance, speed, duration traveled autonomously, the distance of central grid traveling, the number of central grid crossings of the open-field experiment were significantly decreased (P<0.01,P<0.05), while Bristol's fecal character score, intestinal propulsion rate and rest duration in the open-field experiment were significantly increased(P<0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, Bristol's fecal character score, the intestinal propulsion rate, rest duration, and rest episode were significantly decreased(P<0.01, P<0.05), while AWR, the total distance, speed, duration traveled autonomously, the distance of central grid traveling, the number of central grid crossings, and the residence time of the central grid were significantly increased(P<0.01,P<0.05) in the BB group. H.E. staining showed a discontinuous mucosal layer of colon tissue, a slightly disordered arrangement of glands, and more inflammatory cell infiltration in the submucosa and muscle layer in the model group, which was relatively milder in the BB group. After comparing the model and control group, 123 differential metabolites were screened, while 57 were screened after comparing the model and BB group. Six differential metabolic pathways were acquired when comparing the model and the control group, while 8 were acquired when comparing the model and BB group using KEGG enrichment analysis, both of which included the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway. CONCLUSION: "Biao-Ben" acupoint combination can improve symptoms of IBS by regulating metabolites of the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway, which may be a potential target for the treatment of IBS.

To understand the relationship between meal timing, frequency with childhood overweight and obesity, the paper reviews recent studies on the relationship between meal or snack timing, frequency with overweight and obesity among children and adolescents, so as to provide scientific evidence for obesity prevention and control.

OBJECTIVE: Electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment appears useful in the treatment of chronic myocardial ischemia (CMI). The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of EA preconditioning on the regulation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) proteins in a CMI model of vascular regeneration. METHODS: A CMI model was established by subcutaneous injection of isoprinosine hydrochloride (ISO) for 14 days in 45 Wistar rats, which had been randomly divided into a model group (n = 15), a CMI group pretreated with sham EA for 21 days (CMI + Sham group, n = 15) and a CMI group pretreated with verum EA for 21 days (CMI + EA, n = 15) prior to modeling. An additional 15 Wistar rats received 0.9% sodium chloride via intraperitoneal injection for 14 consecutive days (control group). Serum levels of VEGF and HIF-1α were measured by ELISA, while protein expression of VEGF and HIF-1α in the area of myocardial infarction was measured by Western blotting. The area of myocardial infarction and fibrosis of the myocardial tissue in the study groups were visualized by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and Masson staining, respectively. RESULTS: EA pretreatment improved cardiac function by regulating left ventricular end-diastolic diameter and left ventricular end-systolic diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction and the ST segment voltage of the electrocardiogram. EA pretreatment promoted vascular regeneration by increasing serum levels of VEGF and HIF-1α and by increasing protein expression of HIF-1α and VEGF in the infarcted region of the myocardium, leading to a reduction in the area of myocardial infarction on HE staining and reduction of myocardial fibrosis on Masson staining. CONCLUSION: EA pretreatment promotes protein expression of HIF-1α and VEGF in areas of ischemic myocardium, which may represent useful biomarkers for coronary collateral establishment and offer potential targets for therapeutic angiogenesis in patients with CMI.

Acupuncture expectation refers to the subjective estimation for the effect of acupuncture to be applied. As sham acupuncture is usually used in acupuncture randomized clinical trials,there exists the effect of acupuncture expectation on subjects. It is necessary to evaluate and standardize it. The factors that influence the evaluation standard of acupuncture expectations are different acupuncture expectation value evaluations,evaluation criterions and time points. They will affect the evaluation of clinical efficacy. It is urgent to establish a unified evaluation standard to improve its reliability.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at different acupoints on apoptosis-related serum and expression of microRNA (miRNA) in rats with myocardial ischemia, so as to explore its mechanism of action. METHODS: A total of 48 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, a Neiguan group and a acupoint compatibility group, 12 rats in each group. Isoprenaline hydrochloride (ISO) with a daily dose of 2 mg/kg was subcutaneously injected for 14 days to establish the myocardial ischemia model in the model group, Neiguan group and acupoint compatibility group. Rats in the normal group were subcutaneously injected with an equal volume of normal saline. After modeling, rats in the Neiguan group were treated with EA at "Neiguan" (PC 6), while rats in the acupoint compatibility group were treated with EA at "Guanyuan" (CV 4), "Zusanli" (ST 36) and "Neiguan" (PC 6). Rats in the normal group and model group were treated with immobilization, once day for 21 days. The contents of creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); apoptosis index (AI) of myocardial cells was detected by TUNEL method; the expressions of miRNA-1, miRNA-133, miRNA-208 and miRNA-499 were detected by real-time PCR method. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the serum CK-MB, VCAM-1 and ET-1 were significantly increased in the model group, Neiguan group and acupoint compatibility group (all P < 0.01), and the apoptosis index was significantly increased (all P < 0.01). The CK-MB, VCAM-1 and ET-1 in the Neiguan group and acupoint compatibility group were significantly lower than those in the model group (all P < 0.01); the AI was reduced, which was more significant in the acupoint compatibility group (P < 0.05). Compared with the normal group, the expression of miRNA-133 was reduced (P < 0.01) and those of miRNA-208, miRNA-1 and miRNA-499 were significantly increased in the model group (all P < 0.01). Compared with the model group, the expression of miRNA-133 was increased (both P < 0.01) and that of miRNA-208, miRNA-1 and miRNA-499 were significantly reduced (all P < 0.01) in the Neiguan group and acupoint compatibility group. Compared with the Neiguan group, the expression of miRNA-133 was increased (P < 0.01) and those of miRNA-208, miRNA-1 and miRNA-499 were significantly reduced in the acupoint compatibility group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: EA at acupoints, especially acupoint compatibility group, could effectively prevent and treat myocardial ischemia, and the protective effect is possibly correlated to the double regulation on increasing the expression of miRNA-133 and inhibiting the expression of miRNA-1, miRNA-208, miRNA-499.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of principal-subordinate acupoints combination on improving myocardial ischemia, and the gene regulatory pathways for the protection of myocardial ischemia. METHODS: According to the random number table method, 70 SPF Wistar male rats were divided into a normal group, a model group, a LY294002 group, an insulin-like growth factors-1(IGF-1) group, a Neiguan group, an acupoint combination group and an acupoint combination + LY294002 group, 10 rats in each one. Rats in the normal group were injected with 0.9% NaCl solution, while rats in the remaining groups were treated with abdominal subcutaneous injection of isoroterenol hydrochloride to establish the rat model of myocardial ischemia. Rats in the LY294002 group and IGF-1 group were treated with injection of LY294002 solution and IGF-1 solution for 14 days. Rats in the Neiguan group were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) at "Neiguan" (PC 6) by using Han-200 EA apparatus for 10 min per treatment. Rats in the acupoint combination group were treated with EA at "Neiguan" (PC 6), "Zusanli" (ST 36) and "Guanyuan" (CV 4) by using Han-200 EA apparatus for 10 min per treatment. Rats in the acupoint combination + LY294002 group were treated with LY294002 solution for 14 days, and EA at "Neiguan" (PC 6), "Zusanli" (ST 36) and "Guanyuan" (CV 4) was given before model establishment, once a day for 21 days. EA pretreatment was given before model establishment in all acupuncture groups. The heart rate (HR) and ST segment voltage were detected before and after treatment; the myocardial pathological morphology was observed by HE staining; the expressions of P13K mRNA and Akt mRNA were tested. RESULTS: After modeling, HR and ST segment voltage in all intervention groups were higher than those in the normal group (all P < 0.01); after the intervention, the HR and the ST segment voltage in the acupoint combination group, IGF-1 group and IGF-1 group were improved (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), which was more significant in the acupoint combination group and Neiguan group (all P < 0.01). As for the myocardial pathological morphology, obvious myocardial ischemia was observed in the model group, and that in the LY294002 group was the most serious, and that in the acupoint combination+ LY294002 group was moderate. After intervention, the myocardial pathological damage in the IGF-1 group, Neiguan group and acupoint combination group was significant improved, which was more significant in the IGF-1 group and acupoint combination group. As for the expression of PI3K mRNA and Akt mRNA, compared with normal group, the expression of PI3K mRNA was increased in the remaining groups after modeling (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), which was more significant in the IGF-1 group and acupoint combination group (all P < 0. 01). The expression of Akt mRNA in the LY294002 group and acupoint combination + LY294002 group was reduced (P < 0. 01, P < 0.05), while that in the remaining groups was increased (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), which was more significant in the IGF-1 group and acupoint combination group (all P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The principal-subordinate acupoints combination could improve heart rate and ST segment voltage in rats with chronic myocardial ischemia, reduce myocardial pathological damage, which is superior to single selection of "Neiguan" (PC 6). The PI3K/Akt signaling pathway may be involved in the regulation mechanism of principal-subordinate acupoints combination for the protection of chronic myocardial ischemia.
