BACKGROUND: It is essential to develop future nurses' privacy consciousness and attitudes toward patient privacy to recognise threats to patient privacy and take the necessary precautions. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of digital storytelling and case studies teaching methods on nursing students' privacy consciousness and attitudes toward patient privacy. RESEARCH DESIGN: Pretest-posttest, factorial group randomised controlled study. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: Eligible 113 nursing students were randomised to the intervention I (n = 38), intervention II (n = 38), and control group (n = 37) by stratified block randomisation method. The education program consisted of two theoretical sessions and three practical sessions. Data were collected using questionnaires pre-, post-, 4 weeks, and 16 weeks after the intervention between November 2020 and May 2021 in Türkiye. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Written approval was obtained from the university's Ethics Board. Informed written and verbal consent were obtained from the participants. FINDINGS: The results showed a significant time effect on nursing students' privacy consciousness and attitudes toward patient privacy (p < .05), no significant difference between the groups (p > .05), and a significant, positive, and strong relationship between the privacy consciousness and the attitudes toward patient privacy. Students stated that digital storytelling was beneficial in focusing on the subject, memorability, interest, curiosity, and attention. CONCLUSIONS: Besides the ethics course, the privacy education program with digital storytelling and case studies develops nursing students' privacy consciousness and attitudes toward patient privacy. It is recommended to integrate privacy education into ethics courses and popularise digital storytelling and ethical case studies in ethics education.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine sleep problems and the sleep quality of individuals with intestinal stomas. DESIGN: Descriptive quantitative design was used. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The research was carried out from September 2018 to September 2019 at 3 university hospitals with stoma units located in Ankara, Turkey. The study sample comprised 222 individuals with intestinal ostomies who were being monitored in these 3 centers. Approximately half (N = 113, 50.9%) had an ileostomy and 68.5% (N = 152) had a temporary stoma. More than half of the participants (N = 116, 52.3%) reported current sleep problems, 59.5% (N = 132) reported that their stoma affected their sleep, and 64% (N = 142) had problems at night due to their stomas, reporting that they woke up frequently during their main sleep period due to ostomy-related problems. METHODS: Three instruments were used to measure study outcomes: the researcher-designed instrument determining the descriptive characteristics of individuals with intestinal stomas, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS: The mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score was found to be above 5 (13.42, SD: 3.01) indicating poor sleep quality. The mean Epworth Sleepiness Scale score was 7.54 (SD: 6.37) indicating that participants had daytime sleepiness. The mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores of participants with ileostomies ( P = .002) and those with temporary stomas ( P = .009) were found to be significantly higher. CONCLUSIONS: Study findings indicate that individuals with intestinal stomas have poor sleep quality and problems with daytime sleepiness; those with ileostomies and temporary stomas had the worst quality of sleep.

AIM: This study was designed to compare the privacy consciousness of undergraduate students in Turkey and Japan. METHOD: A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out. First-year undergraduate students at a university in Turkey (n = 235) and a university in Japan (n = 242) voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected via a web-based structured questionnaire, using the Descriptive Characteristics Form and the Privacy Consciousness Scale, between November and December 2020. Written approval was obtained from the universities and the ethics board. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. RESULTS: The privacy consciousness of the Turkish students was significantly higher than that of the Japanese students (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Privacy consciousness can be affected by individual, social, and cultural value differences, beliefs, and perceptions. It is suggested that similar studies be conducted with a greater number of samples and between different countries.

The aim of this study is to explore nursing students' experiences with death and terminal patients during clinical education. A secondary analysis of qualitative data that were collected through 11 focus group interviews with nursing students was performed. Data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. There were a total of 9 themes across 3 contexts. Data were grouped under the following themes: feelings experienced when encountering death for the first time, reactions to the first encounter with death, factors affecting the reactions to death, involvement in terminal patient care, being informed about the physical process that terminal patients are going through, students' approach toward terminal patients and their relatives, health professionals' approach toward terminal/dying patients/their relatives, changes in the ideas about death, and changes in the ideas about terminal/dying patients. The study shows a lack of guidance on the part of teachers who also avoid patients and families who are considered terminally ill.

AIM: The aim of this study was to develop a self-assessment scale for nurses' ethical behaviours for protecting patients' rights and to determine its reliability and validity. METHODS: This was a methodological study. This study was conducted in public, private and university hospitals in Turkey between August 2018 and May 2019. The sample group consisted of 450 nurses. The item pool was formed with 44 items. After five experts' assessment for content validity, the draft scale was formed with 37 items with a 5-point Likert-type scale. The item-total score correlation and exploratory factor analysis were used. RESULTS: The scale included 28 items and five subscales (respect for right to information and decision making, providing fair care, providing benefit-not harming, respect for patient values and choices, attention to privacy). Cronbach's alpha was 0.84 for the whole scale. CONCLUSION: Validity and reliability have been demonstrated for a newly developed scale to measure nurses' ethical behaviours to protect patients' rights.

RESUMO

This qualitative study aims to reveal the effect of professional education on medical and nursing students' attitudes toward death. The study was carried out with nursing and medical students (N = 197). Research data was collected through semi-structured interview questions and 23 focus group interviews. The data was assessed using thematic analysis method. The themes were evaluated within the context of perception of death, ethical dilemmas, and, death education. To achieve professional competency in attitudes toward death, it is imperative to form a common educational curriculum and practice that would help students develop a mutual language and value system about death.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency room conditions and the characteristics of the patients followed up pose a risk for pressure injury. AIM: This study was conducted as a pilot study to assess the effectiveness of a training program in increasing the awareness of healthcare professionals working in an emergency department about how to manage pressure injuries. METHODS: The study was a prospective, pre-test post-test intervention study without a control group. The study included 595 patients who were hospitalized in the emergency room for more than two hours and voluntarily agreed to participate, as well as 11 physicians and 17 nurses working in the emergency department between 15 April and 19 June 2019 2019. It was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the 30-day pressure injury incidence rate in the emergency department was evaluated using the "Emergency Department Patients Information and Pressure Injury Assessment Form" and "The Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Injury Risk". In the second stage, the healthcare professionals were given training about pressure injuries. The knowledge levels of healthcare professionals before and after the training were evaluated using "The Descriptive Characteristics Form for Emergency Department Personnel (doctors and nurses)" and "The Questionnaire for Identifying and Preventing Pressure Injury". In the third stage, the 30-day pressure injury incidence rate in the was re-evaluated after the training using the same two scales as before. The SPSS 25 package program was used to evaluate the data in terms of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, and the Mann-Whitney U Test for independent groups, the t-test, the correlated sample t-test, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, Pearson Chi-square test, Yates Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact Chi-square test were also used. RESULTS: The mean knowledge test score of the healthcare professionals working in the emergency department was determined as X¯±SD = 53.71 ± 14.70 before the training and X¯±SD = 58.57 ± 11.83 after the training. The average score on the prevention dimension of the Questionnaire for Identifying and Preventing Pressure Injury was found to be statistically significantly higher than before the training (p < 0.05). The pressure injury incidence in the emergency department was 12.5% before the training and 8.8% afterwards. CONCLUSION: It was observed that the knowledge of healthcare professionals about pressure injury was insufficient and that training given on this topic both increased their knowledge and decreased the incidence of pressure injury. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Training about pressure injuries is important for preventing pressure injury, identifying the injury early, treating the injury appropriately and increasing the awareness of healthcare professionals.

AIM: This study was conducted to determine the impact of tailored training provided to nurses for preventing pressure injuries (PIs) on nurses' knowledge levels and the PI point prevalence (PP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This interventional study was carried out in a university hospital with a bed capacity of 1114 in an urban center in Turkey. Ethics committee approval (28.06.2018/31) and institutional permission were obtained for the study, in addition to the nurses' written, informed consent. The study was completed in three stages. In the first stage an initial PP study was conducted in the clinics with the participation of the nurses and the members of the research team (n = 422 patients). In the second stage the knowledge levels of 194 nurses were measured before training was given on following-up and preventing PIs. The nurses then participated in the tailored training and their knowledge levels were re-measured afterwards. All the nurses were given individual advice related to the prevention of PIs for 30 days after they had completed the training. In the third stage a second PP study was conducted four months after the first PP study (n = 454 patients). The data were collected using the Pressure Injury Prevalence Form, the Braden Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Tool and the Knowledge Level Measurement Form. Descriptive values, the paired samples t-test, Pearson's chi-squared test and Fisher's Exact test were used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The nurses' pretest mean knowledge score was 55.36% ± 14.40 and their posttest mean score was 69.92% ± 9.73. The difference between these scores was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The study found no significant difference between the first PP ratio and the second PP ratio (p > 0.05), and the nurses were better able to evaluate skin and PIs after the training. CONCLUSION: The study determined that the tailored training given to the nurses increased their knowledge; however, it had no impact on the PP after four months. It is recommended that any training programs using this model be continued and that PP studies of institutions be conducted annually.

BACKGROUND: Music is a tool that can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, maintain vital signs at normal levels, and increase exam success. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effect of music therapy on nursing students' first objective structured clinical exam success, anxiety levels, and vital signs, and to reveal their views about music therapy in the context of an exam. DESIGN: Mixed-pattern single-blind randomized controlled qualitative study. SETTING: Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey. PARTICIPANTS: First-year students enrolled in the Fundamentals of Nursing II course were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 61) or control group (n = 64). Twenty-two (22) experimental group students provided the sample for the qualitative stage. METHODS: Data were collected between February and June 2018 using the Informative Features Form, State-trait Anxiety Inventory, Vital Signs Assessment Form, Skill Checklists, and Focus-group Interview Form. All students completed the theoretical classes, laboratory classes, and small-group studies. The experimental group participated in five music therapy sessions two weeks before the exam. All students' vital signs were measured before and after the exam. Three focus group interviews were conducted with the 22 experimental group students in the week after the exam. RESULTS: The blood pressure values of the experimental group before and after the exam were significantly lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between exam success and anxiety levels between the two groups. In the focus group interviews, students said they found music therapy suitable for reducing anxiety in their daily lives, but not before the exam. CONCLUSIONS: Music therapy had positive effects on the students' blood pressure but had no effect on exam success or anxiety levels. This study suggests that more music therapy sessions be conducted with different groups of students in greater numbers before different exams.

The development of professional attitudes in nursing students is influenced by their learning experiences (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) and instructors' professional behaviors. Instructors can enhance students' professional attitude by organizing the training environment, being a role model, and providing counseling. This study was conducted as a tailoring intervention study over 4 years (2010-2013) examining 73 nursing students (34 intervention, 39 control) to determine the effect of training and counseling on nursing students' professional attitudes. Data were collected utilizing the Introductory Characteristics Form and the Instrument of Professional Attitude for Student Nurses. Intervention group students were provided training and counseling complementing their current education to develop their professional attitudes. Controls proceeded with their current education. Instrument for Professional Attitude for Student Nurses posttest scores of the intervention group were significantly higher than those of control group students. Furthermore, intervention group scores on all subscales other than "competence and continuous education" significantly increased after training. Controls showed no growth in professional attitudes, other than in "contribution to scientific knowledge." The training and counseling program had a positive influence on the professional attitudes of nursing students. Thus, providing tailored training and counseling associated to professionalism throughout the educational process at schools providing nursing training is recommended.
