RESUMO

Since arginase has been found to be an arginine-depleting and nitric oxide synthase-regulating enzyme, the present study was devised to examine hypertrophied and infected tonsil and adenoid arginase activity in relation to a metabolic arginase-nitric oxide pathway and its association with disease processes. Tissues were taken from 32 children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. There was a statistically significant difference between the two tissue enzyme activities, with tonsillar arginase activity being higher than the corresponding adenoidal tissue (P < 0.005). This suggests a potential role for tissue arginase activity as an outcome module and a contributing factor in chronic recurrent infection and hypertrophy of tonsillar and adenoidal tissues.

RESUMO

In this study, the activities of major enzymes participating in free radical metabolism (xanthine oxidase, XO; Cu,Zn and Mn superoxide dismutases, SOD; glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px; catalase, CAT) were measured in kidney tissues from guinea pigs treated with gentamicin alone (200 mg/kg/day), gentamicin plus vitamin C (600 mg/kg/day), gentamicin plus vitamin E (400 mg/kg/day), and gentamicin plus vitamins C and E together for 10 days, and from animals treated with physiological saline solution alone during this period. We found no significant differences between control and gentamicin groups with respect to XO and Cu,Zn-SOD activities. However, the activities of Mn-SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT were found to be significantly depressed in the gentamicin-treated group relative to controls. In the gentamicin plus vitamin C group, the renal tissue Mn-SOD activity was found to be higher as compared with control and gentamicin groups. In this group, XO, GSH-Px and CAT activities were also higher than in the gentamicin-treated group, but no statistically significant differences existed between the values of this group and controls. Similar results were also observed in the gentamicin plus vitamin E group for Mn-SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, and XO. In this group, the Cu,Zn-SOD activity was found to be decreased as compared with control and gentamicin groups. In the gentamicin plus vitamins C and E group, the Cu,Zn-SOD activity was found to be decreased, the XO activity to be unchanged, and Mn-SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities to be increased as compared with the gentamicin and control groups. The results suggest that the enzymatic antioxidant defense system was significantly disturbed because of the suppressed activities of Mn-SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT in the kidney tissues from animals treated with gentamicin. However, vitamins C and E given concurrently with gentamicin completely abrogated this enzymatic suppression.

RESUMO

We used the CO2 laser (group 1) and conventional microsurgery (group 2) for anastomosis of the freshly divided uterine horns of rats and compared the two methods. Each group was then compared with a control group in whom only exploration was carried out at laparotomy. Comparison was done regarding the clinical and histologic results. In addition, serum levels and tissue concentrations of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured, and the three groups were compared. No significant difference was found between the mean adhesion scores of groups 1 and 2; however, when the control group was compared with the other groups, the differences were statistically significant. The tubal patency rates in groups 1 and 2 and the control group were 83.3%, 79.2% and 100%, respectively, and the pregnancy rates in those groups were 54.5% (6/11), 45.5% (5/11) and 100% (10/10). The differences in tubal patency and pregnancy rates between groups 1 and 2 were not significant, but when each was compared with the control group, the differences were significant. The mean scores for mucosal regeneration and disruption of the muscularis layer in group 1 were significantly lower than those in group 2. Serum levels and tissue concentrations of ALP and LDH in the control group were lower than in groups 1 and 2, and the differences between the control group and each of the other groups were significant; however, no significant difference was found between groups 1 and 2.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
