In this work, we study the chemical bond in molecules containing heavy and super-heavy elements according to the current state-of-the-art bonding models. An Energy Decomposition Analysis in combination with Natural Orbital for Chemical Valence (EDA-NOCV) within the relativistic four-component Dirac-Kohn-Sham (DKS) framework is employed, which allows to successfully include the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects on the chemical bond description.Simple halogen-bonded adducts ClXL (X=At, Ts; L= NH3, Br-, H2O, CO) of astatine and tennessine have been selected to assess a trend on descending along a group, while modulating the ClXL bond features through the different electronic nature of the ligand L. Interesting effects caused by SOC have been revealed: i) a huge increase of the ClTs dipole moment (which is almost twice as that of Cl At), ii) a lowering of the ClX…L bonding energy arising from different contributions to the ClX…L interaction energy strongly depending on the nature of L, iii) a quenching of one of the π back-donation components to the bond. In the ClTs(CO) adduct, the back-donation from ClTs to CO becomes the most important component. The analysis of the electronic structure of the ClX dimers allows for a clear interpretation of the SOC effects in these systems.

BACKGROUND: In persons living with HIV (PLWH), the burden of non-communicable chronic diseases increased over time, because of aging associated with chronic inflammation, systemic immune activation, and long-term exposure to the combination antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: To explore the association of chronological age, age at first ART, and exposure to ART with non-communicable chronic diseases, we performed a cross-sectional analysis to evaluate the prevalence of comorbidities in patients enrolled in the SCOLTA Project, stratified by groups of chronological age (50-59 and 60-69 years) and by years of antiretroviral treatment (ART, ≤ 3 or > 3 years). RESULTS: In 1394 subjects (23.8% women), mean age at enrollment was 57.4 (SD 6.5) years, and at first ART 45.3 (SD 10.7). Men were older than women both at enrollment (57.6 vs 56.8, p = 0.06) and at first ART (45.8 vs 43.6, p = 0.0009). ART duration was longer in women (13.1 vs 11.7 years, p = 0.01). The age- and sex-adjusted rate ratios (aRRs, and 95% confidence interval, CI) showed that longer ART exposure was associated with dyslipidemia (aRR 1.35, 95% CI 1.20-1.52), hypertension (aRR 1.52, 95% CI 1.22-1.89), liver disease (aRR 1.78, 95% CI 1.32-2.41), osteopenia/osteoporosis (aRR 2.88, 95% CI 1.65-5.03) and multimorbidity (aRR 1.36, 95% CI 1.21-1.54). These findings were confirmed in strata of age, adjusting for sex. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that longer ART exposure was associated with increased risk of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and osteopenia/osteoporosis, hence the presence of multimorbidity, possibly due to the exposition to more toxic antiretrovirals. We observed different comorbidities, according to ART exposure and age.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines have had a fundamental impact in containing the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, there are few efficacy data relating to frail patients, including the HIV-positive patient. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV- 2) serum neutralization in People Living with HIV (PLWH) compared to a cohort of healthy volunteers both vaccinated with BNT162b2. METHODS: A serum sample was then withdrawn 14-21 days after the second dose of the vaccine and a serum neutralization assay was performed on Vero E6 cells. The experiments were performed using two strains of SARS-CoV-2 as 20A.EU1 and B.1.617.2. RESULTS: PLWH on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) showed a vaccine response comparable to the healthy subjects. No correlation between CD4 count or CD4/CD8 and neutralizing antibodies (NTAbs) has been found. No differences in NT-Abs between patients with CD4 nadir above or under 200 cells/µl have been found. In both cohorts, vaccine-elicited serum better neutralized 20A.EU1 than B.1.617.2 strain. CONCLUSION: PLWH in ART and with good immuno-virological recovery showed a vaccine response comparable to that of healthy subjects and regardless of their immunological status at HIV infection diagnosis. However, larger studies are needed to confirm our results and to evaluate the vaccine response even in patients with low CD4 counts.
