INTRODUCTION: Congenital amusia is a specific condition in which the individual is unable to recognise tonal variations in a piece of musical. This cannot be explained by a previous brain injury, hearing loss, cognitive deficit, socio-affective disorder or lack of environmental stimulation. The current estimated prevalence is 1.5% of the world population, with a significant genetic component among those who suffer from it. It has been claimed that certain cognitive abilities in the emotional, spatial and language fields may be affected in people with amusia. AIM: To review the literature describing the effects on non-musical skills that may coexist in individuals with congenital amusia. DEVELOPMENT: Several neuroimaging studies have observed morphological and functional changes in the temporal lobe, as well as in the white matter connections between the superior temporal gyrus and the inferior frontal gyrus. From these affected regions, there may be a deficit in cognitive skills related to adjacent areas. CONCLUSIONS: Congenital amusia has been associated with poor performance in different non-musical cognitive skills, such as visuospatial processing, language processing, reading difficulties, face recognition and emotional aspects.


TITLE: Amusia congénita y sus efectos en habilidades no musicales.Introducción. La amusia congénita es una condición específica en la que el individuo afectado es incapaz de reconocer variaciones tonales en las piezas musicales. Esto no puede explicarse por una lesión encefálica previa, una pérdida auditiva, un déficit cognitivo, un trastorno socioafectivo o una falta de estimulación ambiental. Actualmente se estima una prevalencia del 1,5% de la población mundial, con un importante componente genético entre los afectados. Se ha descrito que en las personas con amusia puede haber afectación de ciertas habilidades cognitivas en el campo emocional, espacial y del lenguaje. Objetivo. Revisar la bibliografía donde se describen los efectos en las habilidades no musicales que pueden coexistir en individuos con amusia congénita. Desarrollo. Varios estudios de neuroimagen han permitido observar cambios morfológicos y funcionales en el lóbulo temporal, así como en las conexiones de la sustancia blanca entre el giro temporal superior y el giro frontal inferior. Partiendo de estas regiones afectadas, podría existir un déficit en habilidades cognitivas relacionadas con áreas adyacentes. Conclusiones. La amusia congénita se ha relacionado con un pobre desempeño en diferentes habilidades cognitivas no musicales, como el procesamiento visuoespacial, el procesamiento del lenguaje, alteraciones de la lectura, el reconocimiento de rostros y aspectos emocionales.

Aquatic organisms are continuously exposed to environmental variations, which can lead to physiological and biochemical alterations. Leporinus macrocephalus, known as piavuçu, is a migratory species that may be exposed to variations in dissolved oxygen levels. Studies evaluating oxidative changes undergone by this species in these conditions are scarce. Therefore, this investigation aimed at evaluating oxidative alterations in L. macrocephalus exposed to different oxygen levels for 96 h: 6.12 ± 0.18, 3.99 ± 0.17, 3.22 ± 0.17, 2.47 ± 0.30 and 0.710 ± 0.07 mg L(-1). At the end of the experimental period, fish were euthanized and livers used to determine lipid hydroperoxides, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase and thiol groups, which are an indirect measure of reduced glutathione. Results indicated a decrease in the studied parameters in hypoxic situations, suggesting a possible metabolic depression.

The aim of this study was to determine oxidative stress parameters in the liver, gill and muscle of silver catfish juveniles infected with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and maintained at pH 5.0 or 7.0 for three days. Juveniles were infected by adding one I. multifiliis-infected juvenile and water containing theronts to tanks. After the appearance of white spots on the skin, infected juveniles exposed to pH 5.0 and 7.0 showed significantly higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in the liver and gills compared to uninfected juveniles. Liver of infected juveniles exposed to pH 7.0 showed higher catalase (CAT) and lower glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities, but those maintained at pH 5.0 showed significantly higher GST activity than uninfected juveniles. The gills of infected juveniles showed significantly higher CAT (day two) and GST activity at both pH 5.0 and 7.0 compared to uninfected juveniles. Muscle of infected juveniles showed significantly lower CAT and GST activity and TBARS levels (at day three) when maintained at both pH 5.0 and 7.0 compared to uninfected juveniles. In conclusion, I. multifiliis infection induces liver and gill damage via lipid peroxidation products in silver catfish, but higher antioxidant enzyme activity could indicate a greater degree of protection against this parasite.

The avidin-biotin molecular recognition system is widely used in parasite immunology. However, the presence of biotin and/or biotin-containing molecules (BCMs) in samples may lead to erroneous results. In the work reported herein we investigated the extent to which biotin and BCMs present in helminth extracts may interfere in avidin/biotin-based immunoassays and developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for quantification of these components. In avidin-based ELISA using antinematode monoclonal antibodies, an extract of the nematode Anisakis simplex showed very high background reactivity due to biotin/BCMs, whereas the background reactivity in an extract of the nematode Trichinella spiralis was negligible. To investigate interspecies differences further, we performed Western-blot analyses (with avidin as the detector) of extracts from seven nematodes (A. simplex, Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis, Hysterothylacium aduncum, T. spiralis, and Trichuris muris) and the cestode Bothriocephalus scorpii. Even within superfamilies there was considerable variation in the banding patterns obtained. The above-mentioned results confirm that biotin and BCMs may be a significant source of interference in ELISA and immunoblotting, two of the techniques most widely used in parasitological immunodiagnosis. A competition ELISA designed to allow accurate quantification of biotin and BCMs in helminth extracts likewise indicated very considerable interspecies variation. Both A. simplex and H. aduncum had very high biotin/BCM contents. Microdialysis of extracts in the presence of dimethylsulfoxide to remove free biotin prior to ELISA indicated that the high biotin/BCM content of the H. aduncum extract (but not the A. simplex extract) was very largely due to free biotin. Taken together, these results indicate that extreme caution should be exercised in the use of avidin/biotin-based immunoassays for the detection of helminth antigens and that in many cases it may be better to use an alternative recognition system.
