BACKGROUND: Influenza (flu) is pervasive and burdensome. The purpose of this study was to determine the readability levels of online articles related to flu. METHODS: Using the search term "influenza," the URL's of the first 100 English language Web sites were vetted for content to ascertain that the article met inclusion criteria. Five recommended readability tests were conducted using an online service to calculate readability. Overall, the analysis indicates that flu material found on the web is not being written at a level that is widely readable. RESULTS: None of the 100 sites included in the analysis received an acceptable score on all 5 assessments. One-sample independent t tests (α = 0.05, df = 99) indicated that it is highly unlikely that flu Web sites are being written at the desirable level. Of the 100 sampled sites, 33 had a .com, 29 had a .org, and 22 had a .gov extension. Extension type did not play a role in readability level of these sites. CONCLUSIONS: When creating content for the masses, health professionals should maximize their efforts by testing the readability as well as other factors that influence the likelihood that it will be understood.

RESUMO

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is highly effective in preventing anogenital cancers, but vaccination rates in the United States remain low. In deciding whether to vaccinate their children, parents are increasingly using the internet to gather information. This study aimed to examine the level of readability of information on HPV vaccines written on 100 websites that were found via an internet search. To create the website sample, the first 50 websites from the search "HPV immunization" were recorded, followed by the first 50 non-duplicated websites from the search "Gardasil." The content of the sites was analyzed using established readability scales. Websites were compared based on keyword search and on whether they had a commercial or non-commercial URL extension. The majority of websites were found to have information of a difficult reading level. Websites with commercial URL extensions and websites found using the search "Gardasil" had higher mean readability scores. These results suggest that many parents may not understand the information currently presented on the internet and that interventions aimed at improving the readability of online information could help to increase parental approval of the vaccine.

Reading and understanding health information, both components of health literacy, can influence patient decisions related to disease management. Older adults, the population of males at greatest risk for prostate cancer, may have compromised capacity to understand and use health information. The purpose of this study was to determine the readability of prostate cancer materials on the Internet using five recommended readability tests. Using a cleared Internet browser, a search was conducted for "prostate cancer." The URLs of the first 100 websites in English were recorded to create the sample. The readability scores for each website were determined using an online, recommended service. This service generates five commonly recommended readability tests. All five tests revealed that the majority of websites had difficult readability. There were no significant differences identified between websites with .org, .gov, or .edu extension versus those with .com, .net, or other extension. It is apparent that the Internet is used often as a resource for health-related information. This study demonstrates that the large majority of information available on the Internet about prostate cancer will not be readable for many individuals.

Expanded-bed adsorption (EBA) can be particularly useful in protein recovery from high-cell-density fermentation broth where conventional methods for harvest and clarification, such as continuous centrifugation and depth filtration, demand long processing times and are associated with high costs. In this work, the use of next-generation high-particle-density EBA adsorbents, including two mixed-mode resins, for the direct capture of a recombinant protein expressed in yeast at high cell densities is evaluated. Using classical experimental approaches and under different conditions (pH, salt, etc.), Langmuir isotherm parameters for these resins are obtained along with pore diffusivity values. Additional batch adsorption studies with Fastline® MabDirect, the resin that demonstrated the highest static binding capacity for the recombinant protein of interest under the conditions evaluated in this study, indicate competitive binding of nontarget proteins and approximately a 30% reduction in equilibrium binding capacity to 50 mg/mL settled bed in the presence of a 5%-10% cell concentration. Packed-bed (PB) dynamic binding capacities for the MabDirect resin (25-40 mg/mL PB) were significantly higher than for the Fastline® HSA resin and for the MabDirect MM resin in expanded-bed mode (5-10 mg/mL settled bed). Bed expansion behavior for the mMabDirect MM resin along with process yield and eluate purity are identified as a function of linear velocity and cell density, demonstrating process feasibility for pilot scale use.
