RESUMO

The aim of the study was to investigate the relation between subjective quality of life and quality of vocational education services from the view of students with intellectual disability who participate in public special vocational education schools in Greece. The level of quality of life and quality of special vocational education services was explored. The article presents a functional description of service quality in special vocational education and operationalizes quality of life for students with disability. Instruments were developed and adapted in line with the participatory research paradigm. Convenience sampling was used. Data was gathered from 131 students with intellectual disability. All measures showed good evidence of internal consistency and construct validity. The findings suggest relationship between quality of life and quality of special vocational education services received by students with intellectual disability. Low levels of self-determination are highlighted. Practical implications concerning the application of the instruments in special education settings as measures for the quality assessment and the evaluation of educational interventions are discussed.

AIM: Voice interventions for transgender individuals can address several speech and voice parameters - fundamental frequency, resonance, intonation, rhythm, and intensity. In this study, we focus on fundamental voice frequency and build on existing research to test one technique that has been shown in a preliminary study to effectively adjust fundamental voice frequency in line with clients' goals. METHOD: More specifically, we employed an adaptation of melodic intonation therapy (MIT) to assess whether it can raise trans women's average fundamental frequency to a significant degree. Eleven trans women participated in two one-to-one therapy sessions, four weeks apart. RESULTS: Results pointed to a statistically significant rise in both their singing and speaking fundamental frequencies following the adapted MIT therapy sessions. Participants were also successful in imitating upward fundamental frequency contours when singing and in producing them independently in the speech modality. FUTURE DIRECTIONS: Longitudinal studies are warranted to determine whether the observed positive results translate into long-term benefits.

Background: One of the most influential factors that affect the quality of life of transgender individuals is whether they can be perceived by others to "pass" in their felt gender. Voice and communication style are two important identifying dimensions of gender and many transgender individuals wish to acquire a voice that matches their gender. Evidence shows that few transgender individuals access voice therapy, and that this is caused by their concerns about stigmatization or negative past experiences within healthcare services. In order to address the negative experiences faced by transgender populations we need a better understanding of healthcare services' current levels of knowledge and LGBT awareness. Some studies of Speech-Language Therapists' (SLTs') experience and confidence working with transgender individuals have recently been undertaken in the United States (US). However, little research has been carried out in Asia. Aims: To investigate Taiwanese SLTs' knowledge, attitudes and experiences of providing transgender individuals with relevant therapy. Method: A cross-sectional self-administered web-based survey hosted on the Qualtrics platform was delivered to 140 Taiwanese SLTs. Results: Taiwanese SLTs were, (i) more familiar with the terminology used to address "lesbian, gay, and bisexual groups" than with "transgender" terminology, (ii) generally positive in their attitudes toward transgender individuals, and (iii) comfortable about providing clinical services to transgender clients. However, the majority of participants did not feel that they were sufficiently skilled in working with transgender individuals, even though most believed that providing them with voice and communication services fell within the SLT scope of practice. Conclusion: It is important for clinicians to both be skilled in transgender voice and communication therapy and to be culturally competent when providing services to transgender individuals. This study recommends that cultural competence relating to gender and sexual minority groups should be addressed in SLTs' university education as well as in their continuing educational programs.

People with DS are known to have difficulties with expressive language, and often have difficulties with intelligibility. They often have stronger visual than verbal short-term memory skills and, therefore, reading has often been suggested as an intervention for speech and language in this population. However, there is as yet no firm evidence that reading can improve speech outcomes. This study aimed to compare reading, picture naming and repetition for the same 10 words, to identify if the speech of eight children with DS (aged 11-14 years) was more accurate, consistent and intelligible when reading. Results show that children were slightly, yet significantly, more accurate and intelligible when they read words compared with when they produced those words in naming or imitation conditions although the reduction in inconsistency was non-significant. The results of this small-scale study provide tentative support for previous claims about the benefits of reading for children with DS. The mechanisms behind a facilitatory effect of reading are considered, and directions are identified for future research.
