RESUMO

The embryonal central nervous system (CNS) tumor with PLAGL1 (pleomorphic adenoma gene-like) amplification is a novel type of pediatric neoplasm with a distinct methylation profile, described for the first time in 2022. It may be located anywhere in the neuroaxis and, as its name implies, it is driven by the amplification and overexpression of one of the PLAG family genes. Although the associated clinical, immunohistopathological, and molecular characteristics are well characterized in the seminal report of this entity, data on the radiological features is still lacking. Here, we present a case report of a 4-year-old girl with a biopsy-proven PLAGL1-amplified brainstem tumor and provide a detailed description of the corresponding conventional neuroimaging characteristics, aiming to better delineate this entity and to increase the awareness of this pathology in the radiological community.

RESUMO

Raising public awareness about the relevance of supporting sustainable practices is required owing to the phenomena of global warming caused by the rising production of greenhouse gases. The healthcare sector generates a relevant proportion of the total carbon emissions in developed countries, and radiology is estimated to be a major contributor to this carbon footprint. Neuroradiology markedly contributes to this negative environmental effect, as this radiological subspecialty generates a high proportion of diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures, the majority of them requiring high energy-intensive equipment. Therefore, neuroradiologists and neuroradiological departments are especially responsible for implementing decisions and initiatives able to reduce the unfavourable environmental effects of their activities, by focusing on four strategic pillars-reducing energy, water, and helium use; properly recycling and/or disposing of waste and residues (including contrast media); encouraging environmentally friendly behaviour; and reducing the effects of ionizing radiation on the environment. The purpose of this article is to alert neuroradiologists about their environmental responsibilities and to analyse the most productive strategic axes, goals, and lines of action that contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with their professional activities.

Introduction: The environmental crisis has been suggested to be one of the greatest threats to public health. However, this phenomenon is given little attention during the training of health professionals. Objective: To identify the social representations about the teaching-learning of nursing care in the context of the global environmental crisis, from the perspective of university teaching nurses in Chile. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive and hermeneutic study was carried out, with a process-based approach using social representations. The method for producing information was the focused interview. The sampling was theoretical and the sample size was determined by saturation criteria (n=15). Triangulation of sources was performed and inductive qualitative content analysis was used. Results: Three thematic lines appeared: 1. climate change and environment within the curriculum; 2. opportunities as part of teaching and learning about climate change and environment (including four categories: students' sensitivity towards environmental issues, professors' personal motivations, facilitating subjects, and institutional policies); and 3. obstacles in teaching and learning about climate change and environment (including three categories: biomedical model, resistance to change, and scarcity of interdisciplinarity). Conclusions: Topics related to the global environmental crisis are not considered within the nursing curriculums; they are included in subjects only when the professors are interested in doing so(AU)

RESUMO

Sellar/suprasellar tumors comprise about 10% of all pediatric Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors and include a wide variety of entities, with different cellular origins and distinctive histological and radiological findings, demanding customized neuroimaging protocols for appropriate diagnosis and management. The 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of CNS tumors unprecedently incorporated both histologic and molecular alterations into a common diagnostic framework, with a great impact in tumor classification and grading. Based on the current understanding of the clinical, molecular, and morphological features of CNS neoplasms, there have been additions of new tumor types and modifications of existing ones in the latest WHO tumor classification. In the specific case of sellar/suprasellar tumors, changes include for example separation of adamantinomatous and papillary craniopharyngiomas, now classified as distinct tumor types. Nevertheless, although the current molecular landscape is the fundamental driving force to the new WHO CNS tumor classification, the imaging profile of sellar/suprasellar tumors remains largely unexplored, particularly in the pediatric population. In this review, we aim to provide an essential pathological update to better understand the way sellar/suprasellar tumors are currently classified, with a focus on the pediatric population. Furthermore, we intend to present the neuroimaging features that may assist in the differential diagnosis, surgical planning, adjuvant/neoadjuvant therapy, and follow-up of this group of tumors in children.

RESUMO

Ecological and safe packaging solutions arise as pivotal points in the development of an integrated system for sustainable meat production. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a combined chitosan (Ch) + green tea extract (GTE) + essential oil (thyme oil, TO; flaxseed oil, FO; or oregano oil, OO) coating on the safety and quality of vacuum-packaged beef during storage at 4 °C. An optimized bio-based coating formulation was selected (2% Ch + 2% GTE + 0.1% FO) to be applied to three fresh beef cuts (shoulder, Sh; knuckle, Kn; Striploin, St) based on its pH (5.8 ± 0.1), contact angle (22.3 ± 0.4°) and rheological parameters (viscosity = 0.05 Pa.s at shear rate > 20 s-1). Shelf-life analysis showed that the Ch-GTE-FO coating delayed lipid oxidation and reduced total viable counts (TVC) and Enterobacteriaceae growth compared with uncoated beef samples over five days. In addition, Ch-GTE-FO coating decreased total color changes of beef samples (e.g., ∆E* = 9.84 and 3.94, for non-coated and coated Kn samples, respectively) for up to five days. The original textural parameters (hardness, adhesiveness and springiness) of beef cuts were maintained during storage when Ch-GTE-FO coating was applied. Based on the physicochemical and microbial characterization results, the combination of the Ch-GTE-FO coating developed was effective in preserving the quality of fresh beef cuts during refrigerated storage along with vacuum packaging.

RESUMO

We report a case of fetal microcephaly found during the second trimester ultrasound and confirmed by further ultrasound scans and fetal MRI. The array comparative genomic hybridisation analysis of the fetus and the male parent showed a 1.5 Mb deletion overlapping the Feingold syndrome region, an autosomal dominant syndrome that can cause microcephaly, facial/hand abnormalities, mild neurodevelopmental delay and others. This case illustrates the need for a detailed investigation by a multidisciplinary team to provide prenatal counselling regarding a postnatal outcome to the parents and orient their decision towards the continuation or termination of pregnancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The torcular pseudomass is an incidental extra-axial midline mass located between the venous sinuses and the occipital squama in the pediatric population. Although this structure is presumed to be a developmental feature, it has not been characterized on fetal MRI. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency, imaging features and longitudinal in utero evolution of torcular pseudomass using fetal MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a single-center retrospective study of fetal MRI performed at a tertiary hospital. Two independent reviewers first ordinally scored torcular pseudomass as absent, focal, crescentic or bulky based on morphology. We reviewed available follow-up fetal and postnatal MRI and further classified torcular pseudomass as stable, involuted or progressive. We also collected clinical and demographic data from electronic charts and compared them among categories, corrected for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: This study included a total of 219 fetuses with median gestational age of 28 weeks (interquartile range [IQR]: 23-32 weeks). Torcular pseudomass was absent in 8% (n=17) and present as a focal mass in 15% (n=33), crescentic in 45% (n=98) and bulky in 32% (n=71) of the cases. Median gestational age was statistically different among torcular pseudomass categories and inversely associated with size. Follow-up fetal MRI was available in 9.6% (n=21) of cases (median interval 4 weeks; IQR: 2-9 weeks) and torcular pseudomass in these cases was classified as stable in 67% (n=14), involuted in 29% (n=6) and progressive in 5% (n=1). Postnatal MRI was available in 5% (n=12) of fetuses (median interval 11.5 months, IQR: 3-17 months), and among these cases torcular pseudomass was classified as stable in 33% (n=4) and involuted in 67% (n=8). CONCLUSION: Torcular pseudomass is highly prevalent in the fetal population and shows a natural tendency to involute, even in utero, although it sometimes persists during early infanthood.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: There is limited data concerning neuroimaging findings and longitudinal evaluation of familial cerebral cavernous malformations (FCCM) in children. Our aim was to study the natural history of pediatric FCCM, with an emphasis on symptomatic hemorrhagic events and associated clinical and imaging risk factors. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all children diagnosed with FCCM in four tertiary pediatric hospitals between January 2010 and March 2022. Subjects with first available brain MRI and [Formula: see text] 3 months of clinical follow-up were included. Neuroimaging studies were reviewed, and clinical data collected. Annual symptomatic hemorrhage risk rates and cumulative risks were calculated using survival analysis and predictors of symptomatic hemorrhagic identified using regression analysis. RESULTS: Forty-one children (53.7% males) were included, of whom 15 (36.3%) presenting with symptomatic hemorrhage. Seven symptomatic hemorrhages occurred during 140.5 person-years of follow-up, yielding a 5-year annual hemorrhage rate of 5.0% per person-year. The 1-, 2-, and 5-year cumulative risks of symptomatic hemorrhage were 7.3%, 14.6%, and 17.1%, respectively. The latter was higher in children with prior symptomatic hemorrhage (33.3%), CCM2 genotype (33.3%), and positive family history (20.7%). Number of brainstem (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.37, P = 0.005) and posterior fossa (adjusted HR = 1.64, P = 0.004) CCM at first brain MRI were significant independent predictors of prospective symptomatic hemorrhage. CONCLUSION: The 5-year annual and cumulative symptomatic hemorrhagic risk in our pediatric FCCM cohort equals the overall risk described in children and adults with all types of CCM. Imaging features at first brain MRI may help to predict potential symptomatic hemorrhage at 5-year follow-up.

RESUMO

Hypothermia, a factor associated with neonatal mortality, can occur immediately after birth as a protective mechanism to prevent hypoxic damage in neonates, or to reduce the metabolic rate to improve the chances of survival in the first hours of life. The heat interchange through the superficial temperature of animals can be evaluated with infrared thermography (IRT). However, to date, there is no information on thermal windows in puppies. This study aimed to evaluate, with the use of IRT, the microcirculatory alterations in 8 different thermal windows identified at 7 different times in 289 newborn puppies assigned to different groups. Three thermograms were taken from four zones of each puppy: the facial, frontal, right lateral, and left lateral regions. Newborn puppies were grouped in 4 quartiles according to their weight: Q1 (126−226 g) n = 73, Q2 (227−330 g) n = 72, Q3 (331−387 g) n = 74, and Q4 (388−452 g) n = 70. A total of 8 thermal windows were considered at 7 evaluation times from Wet at birth until 24 h after birth (AB). Two-way mixed ANOVA within and between subjects' design for each thermal window (eight models) was performed. Results revealed a positive correlation between the puppy's weight and its ability to achieve thermostability in all the evaluated thermal windows. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.0001) between the 4 quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) were found. The lowest temperatures were recorded when the pups were still wet and the highest at 24 h AB. Thermal windows with the highest temperatures were abdominal (34.234 ± 0.056 °C), thoracic (33.705 ± 0.049 °C), nasal (30.671 ± 0.110 °C), and upper left palpebral (34.066 ± 0.052 °C), while the lowest were thoracic limb brachial biceps (27.534 ± 0.051 °C), thoracic limb elbow (27.141 ± 0.049 °C), thoracic limb metacarpal (27.024 ± 0.062 °C), and femoral pelvic limb (27.654 ± 0.055 °C). Assessing the thermal response in newborn puppies can help identify drastic temperature reductions or deficient thermoregulatory compensation during the first hours of life, preventing the consequences of hypothermia.

RESUMO

Promoting animal welfare in wildlife species under human care requires the implementation of techniques for continuously monitoring their health. Infrared thermography is a non-invasive tool that uses the radiation emitted from the skin of animals to assess their thermal state. However, there are no established thermal windows in wildlife species because factors such as the thickness or color of the skin, type/length of coat, or presence of fur can influence the readings taken to obtain objective, sensitive values. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the usefulness and application of the ocular, nasal, thoracic, abdominal, and podal anatomical regions as thermal windows for evaluating zoo animals' thermal response and health status. A literature search of the Web of Science, Science Direct, and PubMed databases was performed to identify relevant studies that used IRT with wild species as a complementary diagnostic tool. Implementing IRT in zoos or conservation centers could also serve as a method for determining and monitoring optimal habitat designs to meet the needs of specific animals. In addition, we analyze the limitations of using IRT with various wildlife species under human care to understand better the differences among animals and the factors that must be considered when using infrared thermography.

RESUMO

There has been an increasing consumption of processed and ultra-processed foods, accompanied by growing concerns about the relationship between diet quality and health. Whole-grain foods, composed of cereals and pseudocereals, are recommended as part of a healthy diet, and food labeling is an important tool for consumers to identify the presence of whole grains in packaged foods. This study aimed to analyze the use of the term whole grain on the label of processed and ultra-processed foods based on cereals and pseudocereals (amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat) in Brazil. Data were collected by a census of all food labels in a Brazilian supermarket. Foods were classified into eight groups according to Brazilian legislation and according to the presence or absence of the term whole grain. The prevalence of foods displaying the term whole grain or related expressions on the front label was assessed, and differences between groups were analyzed using Pearson's chi-squared test. Comparisons were also made in relation to the position of whole-grain ingredients in the ingredients list, given that Brazilian food labeling regulations require that ingredients be listed in descending order of weight on packaged foods. The level of significance was defined as p < 0.05. The sample included 1,004 processed and ultra-processed foods based on cereals and pseudocereals, 156 (15.6%) of which displayed the term whole grain and/or similar expressions on the front label. Of these, 98 (9.8%) contained the term whole grain, 25 (2.5%) displayed analogous expressions, and 33 (3.3%) contained the term whole grain concomitantly with analogous terms, identified in foods of the groups Bakery goods, bread, cereals, and related products and Sugars, sugary foods, and snacks. Half of the food products displaying the term whole grain or related expressions on the front label did not have a whole-grain ingredient listed in the first position of the ingredients list. The frequency of whole grains was even lower when analyzing the second and third ingredients. These findings reveal the existence of inaccurate information regarding the term whole grain or analogous expressions on the front label of cereal- and pseudocereal-based packaged foods. It is expected that these results will contribute to stimulating the food industry and regulatory bodies to improve the use of the term whole grain and related expressions on packaged food labels, given that, up to the moment of data collection, there were no regulatory requirements for these statements. Furthermore, the findings might contribute to improving the clarity of information available on food labels, thereby preventing consumer deception at the time of purchase.

RESUMO

Background: Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants is a disease associated with an unregulated hyperactivity of the immune system and may also be associated with a high frequency of hematologic malignancies. Report. This is a case of a female with ASIA-MO syndrome secondary to infiltration of mineral oil for aesthetic purposes and presented with multiple episodes of urolithiasis resulting in renal impairment of her left kidney confirmed by scintigraphy and ending in unilateral nephrectomy. Retrospective renal piece analysis confirmed tubulointerstitial infiltration with light chains and plasma cells. Paraffin fixation prevented subsequent immunofluorescence analysis for better follow-up of the patient. Conclusion: The presence of positive immunofixation kappa chains explained the sudden deterioration of renal function with monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance which concluded in an association between diseases, such as multiple light chain myeloma, as a final diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and characteristics of spinal cord cavernous malformations (SCCM) and intraosseous spinal vascular malformations (ISVM) in a pediatric familial cerebral cavernous malformation (FCCM) cohort and evaluate clinico-radiological differences between children with (SCCM +) and without (SCCM-) SCCM. METHODS: All patients with a pediatric diagnosis of FCCM evaluated at three tertiary pediatric hospitals between January 2010 and August 2021 with [Formula: see text] 1 whole spine MR available were included. Brain and spine MR studies were retrospectively evaluated, and clinical and genetic data collected. Comparisons between SCCM + and SCCM- groups were performed using student-t/Mann-Whitney or Fisher exact tests, as appropriate. RESULTS: Thirty-one children (55% boys) were included. Baseline spine MR was performed (mean age = 9.7 years) following clinical manifestations in one subject (3%) and as a screening strategy in the remainder. Six SCCM were detected in five patients (16%), in the cervico-medullary junction (n = 1), cervical (n = 3), and high thoracic (n = 2) regions, with one appearing during follow-up. A tendency towards an older age at first spine MR (P = 0.14) and [Formula: see text] 1 posterior fossa lesion (P = 0.13) was observed in SCCM + patients, lacking statistical significance. No subject demonstrated ISVM. CONCLUSION: Although rarely symptomatic, SCCM can be detected in up to 16% of pediatric FCCM patients using diverse spine MR protocols and may appear de novo. ISVM were instead absent in our cohort. Given the relative commonality of asymptomatic SCCM, serial screening spine MR should be considered in FCCM starting in childhood.

RESUMO

Sheep and goat extensive production systems are very important in the context of global food security and the use of rangelands that have no alternative agricultural use. In such systems, there are enormous challenges to address. These include, for instance, classical production issues, such as nutrition or reproduction, as well as carbon-efficient systems within the climate-change context. An adequate response to these issues is determinant to economic and environmental sustainability. The answers to such problems need to combine efficiently not only the classical production aspects, but also the increasingly important health, welfare, and environmental aspects in an integrated fashion. The purpose of the study was to review the application of technological developments, in addition to remote-sensing in tandem with other state-of-the-art techniques that could be used within the framework of extensive production systems of sheep and goats and their impact on nutrition, production, and ultimately, the welfare of these species. In addition to precision livestock farming (PLF), these include other relevant technologies, namely omics and other areas of relevance in small-ruminant extensive production: heat stress, colostrum intake, passive immunity, newborn survival, biomarkers of metabolic disease diagnosis, and parasite resistance breeding. This work shows the substantial, dynamic nature of the scientific community to contribute to solutions that make extensive production systems of sheep and goats more sustainable, efficient, and aligned with current concerns with the environment and welfare.

RESUMO

This review presents and analyzes recent scientific findings on the structure, physiology, and neurotransmission mechanisms of transient receptor potential (TRP) and their function in the thermoregulation of mammals. The aim is to better understand the functionality of these receptors and their role in maintaining the temperature of animals, or those susceptible to thermal stress. The majority of peripheral receptors are TRP cation channels formed from transmembrane proteins that function as transductors through changes in the membrane potential. TRP are classified into seven families and two groups. The data gathered for this review include controversial aspects because we do not fully know the mechanisms that operate the opening and closing of the TRP gates. Deductions, however, suggest the intervention of mechanisms related to G protein-coupled receptors, dephosphorylation, and ligands. Several questions emerge from the review as well. For example, the future uses of these data for controlling thermoregulatory disorders and the invitation to researchers to conduct more extensive studies to broaden our understanding of these mechanisms and achieve substantial advances in controlling fever, hyperthermia, and hypothermia.

RESUMO

The objective of this review is to describe and analyze the effect of feathers, hair, and glabrous (hairless) skin on the thermoregulation of domestic and endotherm animals, especially concerning the uses and scope of infrared thermography (IRT), scientific findings on heat and cold stress, and differences among species of domestic animals. Clinical medicine considers thermoregulation a mechanism that allows animals to adapt to varying thermal environmental conditions, a process in which the presence of feathers, hair, or glabrous skin influences heat loss or heat retention, respectively, under hot and cold environmental conditions. Evaluating body temperature provides vital information on an individual's physiological state and health status since variations in euthermia maintenance in vertebrates reflect a significant cellular metabolism deviation that needs to be assessed and quantified. IRT is a non-invasive tool for evaluating thermal responses under thermal stress conditions in animals, where the presence or absence of feathers, hair, and glabrous skin can affect readings and the differences detected. Therefore, anatomical regions, the characteristics of feathers, hair, glabrous skin such as structure, length, color, and extension, and strategies for dissipating or retaining heat together constitute a broad area of opportunity for future research into the phenomena of dermal thermoregulation in domestic species.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is characterized by the growth of pseudotumors, which can affect almost every organ. Elevated serum IgG4 levels are present in only two-thirds of the patients and are not specific. Diagnosis is difficult and is usually based on a biopsy. CLINICAL CASE: A 39-year-old man presented complaints of low back pain and fever. A renal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a voluminous mass next to the right kidney and a biopsy showed an inflammatory process and excluded a neoplasm. A follow-up CT scan at four months revealed total regression without any treatment. Three years later, the patient presented with diplopia and right proptosis. MRI of the orbits revealed a retro-ocular mass; biopsy excluded a malignant process. Infectious, autoimmune or paraneoplastic diseases were also excluded. Although the patient's IgG4 serum levels were normal, histopathological reobservation of the renal biopsy revealed IgG4-positive plasma cells, thus confirming the diagnosis. The patient was prescribed a daily dose of 40 mg of prednisolone and regression of the right orbital lesion was observed. DISCUSSION: IgG4-RD is a rare and recently described condition. Most anatomic pathology laboratories do not routinely test for it. Spontaneous pseudotumor remission is possible, even when associated with the renal phenotype, although this has not been described until now.

RESUMO

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-ionizing, non-invasive technique that permits evaluating the comfort levels of animals, a topic of concern due to the growing interest in determining the state of health and welfare of production animals. The operating principle of IRT is detecting the heat irradiated in anatomical regions characterized by a high density of near-surface blood vessels that can regulate temperature gain or loss from/to the environment by modifying blood flow. This is essential for understanding the various vascular thermoregulation mechanisms of different species, such as rodents and ruminants' tails. The usefulness of ocular, nasal, and vulvar thermal windows in the orbital (regio orbitalis), nasal (regio nasalis), and urogenital (regio urogenitalis) regions, respectively, has been demonstrated in cattle. However, recent evidence for the river buffalo has detected discrepancies in the data gathered from distinct thermal regions in these large ruminants, suggesting a limited sensitivity and specificity when used with this species due to various factors: the presence of hair, ambient temperature, and anatomical features, such as skin thickness and variations in blood supplies to different regions. In this review, a literature search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and PubMed, using keyword combinations that included "infrared thermography", "water buffalo", "river buffalo" "thermoregulation", "microvascular changes", "lacrimal caruncle", "udder", "mastitis", and "nostril". We discuss recent findings on four thermal windows-the orbital and nasal regions, mammary gland in the udder region (regio uberis), and vulvar in the urogenital region (regio urogenitalis)-to elucidate the factors that modulate and intervene in validating thermal windows and interpreting the information they provide, as it relates to the clinical usefulness of IRT for cattle (Bos) and the river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).
