RESUMO

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 as a pandemic disease earlier in 2020, several publications reported the electron microscope images of SARS-CoV-2. This article reviews 73 articles from March 1956 till April 2021, focusing on the ultrastructure characteristics of the coronaviruses. We present the scientific debate and provide an opinion on the current controversy of electron microscopic images interpreted as SARS-CoV-2 particles in specimens from patients with COVID-19. Finally, we report our findings in a post-mortem lung specimen of a COVID-19 patient. With this we hope to facilitate accurate interpretation of TEM findings, and contribute to the building of a unified database in the face of COVID-19 (Tab. 2, Fig. 8, Ref. 81). Keywords.

RESUMO

Accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) by ornamental plants (OPs) from contaminated agriculture soils is a unique technique that can efficiently reduce the metal load in the food chain. Amaranthus tricolor L. has attractive characteristics acquiring a higher growth rate and large biomass when grown at heavy metal contaminated soils. Site-specific detailed information is not available on the use of A. tricolor plant in metal phytoremediation from the polluted sites. The study aimed to enhance the uptake of HMs (Pb, Zn, and Cu) via amending poultry litter extract (PLE), vinasse sugarcane (VSC), and humic acid (HA) as natural mobilized organic materials compared to ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), as a common mobilized chemical agent by A. tricolor plant. The studied soils collected from Helwan, El-Gabal El-Asfar (Cairo Governorate), Arab El-Madabeg (Assiut Governorate), Egypt, and study have been conducted under pot condition. Our results revealed all organic materials in all studied soils, except EDTA in EL-Gabal El-Asfar soil, significantly increased the dry weight of the A. tricolor plant compared to the control treatment. The uptake of Pb and Zn significantly (p > 0.05) increased due to applying all organic materials to the studied soils. HA application caused the highest uptake as shown in Pb concentration by more than 5 times in Helwan soil and EDTA by 65% in El-Gabal El-Asfar soil while VSC increased it by 110% in El-Madabeg soil. Also, an increase in Zn concentration due to EDTA application was 58, 42, and 56% for Helwan, El-Gabal El-Asfar, and El-Madabeg soil, respectively. In all studied soils, the application of organic materials increased the remediation factor (RF) than the control. El-Madabeg soil treated with vinasse sugarcane gave the highest RF values; 6.40, 3.26, and 4.02% for Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively, than the control. Thus, we identified A. tricolor as a successful ornamental candidate that, along with organic mobilization amendments, most efficiently develop soil health, reduce metal toxicity, and recommend remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Additionally, long-term application of organic mobilization amendments and continued growth of A. tricolor under field conditions could be recommended for future directions to confirm the results.

RESUMO

Rice straw is an agricultural waste that causes an annoying problem in Egypt if it is not well exploited. This study focuses on using this waste in power generation by co-gasification of Egyptian Maghara coal and rice straw blends using entrained flow gasifier technology. Aspen Plus was used to conduct a parametric study for investigation of the effect of changing the inputs to the gasifier on the produced gas composition. Three different input parameters, influencing the performance of the gasifier, including the percentage of coal to rice straw in the blend, the fraction of added water to the blend, and the mass percentage of oxygen with respect to the mass of the blend fed to the gasifier were analysed. Two alternative power production schemes (with and without carbon capturing) have been investigated. The obtained optimum feed conditions are: 40% coal in the feed blend, 20% water concentration in the feed slurry, and 80% oxygen with respect to the dry feed blend to the gasifier. For (10 0000 kg per hour) of the feed blend, the power generated was 270.1 MW in the case of non-carbon capturing, while in the case of carbon capturing, 263.52 MW was generated. Although it produces less power, applying carbon capturing techniques means handling less flue gas and thus using smaller gas turbines and results in more environmentally friendly emissions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of surgery in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains unclear. Although previous studies have not shown any increase in morbidity when operating on patients in the ICU for surgical procedures; there remains a reluctance to operate on sick patients in the ICU. AIM: We did a retrospective study of critically ill children and neonates who underwent in-situ surgery (ISS) to further evaluate its safety and potential. Surgery was aided with the use of operative loupes and high-intensity headlight. METHODS: The medical records of all patients who had undergone surgical procedures in the pediatric ICU over an 11-year period from January 1998 till December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. We reviewed our experience looking specifically at wound infection rates along with other morbidities in 543 patients. RESULTS: Our morbidities were comparable with that of operations performed in the operating theater, with low wound infection rates (1%) for all surgeries undertaken in the pediatric ICU. CONCLUSION: ISS avoids the risks of transfer to the operative theater and the potential delays in theater access. Our results suggest that ISS in a tertiary-level pediatric surgical hospital is safe and does not impact adversely on clinical outcome.

RESUMO

Although cultivated hepatocytes are widely used in the studies of drug metabolism, their application in toxicogenomics is considered as problematic, because previous studies have reported only little overlap between chemically induced gene expression alterations in liver in vivo and in cultivated hepatocytes. Here, we identified 22 genes that were altered in livers of rats after oral administration of the liver carcinogens aflatoxin B1 (AB1), 2-nitrofluorene (2-NF), methapyrilene (MP) or piperonyl-butoxide (PBO). The functions of the 22 genes have been classified into two groups. Genes related to stress response, DNA repair or metabolism and genes associated with cell proliferation, respectively. Next, rat hepatocyte sandwich cultures were exposed to AB1, 2-NF, MP or PBO for 24h and expression of the above mentioned genes was determined by RT-qPCR. Significant correlations between the degree of gene expression alterations in vivo and in vitro were obtained for the stress, DNA repair and metabolism associated genes at concentrations covering a range from cytotoxic concentrations to non-toxic/in vivo relevant concentrations. In contrast to the stress associated genes, no significant in vivo/in vitro correlation was obtained for the genes associated with cell proliferation. To understand the reason of this discrepancy, we compared replacement proliferation in vivo and in vitro. While hepatocytes in vivo, killed after administration of hepatotoxic compounds, are rapidly replaced by proliferating surviving cells, in vitro no replacement proliferation as evidenced by BrdU incorporation was observed after washing out hepatotoxic concentrations of MP. In conclusion, there is a good correlation between gene expression alterations induced by liver carcinogens in vivo and in cultivated hepatocytes. However, it should be considered that cultivated primary hepatocytes do not show replacement proliferation explaining the in vivo/in vitro discrepancy concerning proliferation associated genes.

RESUMO

Sixty-eight 12- to 14-month-old crossbred beef heifers averaging 285 kg were assigned at random to treated (n = 35) and control (n = 33) groups to evaluate the use of repetitive norgestomet treatments. Treated heifers received an ear implant containing 6 mg norgestomet on two occasions 16 days apart. Injections of 3 mg norgestomet and 5 mg estradiol valerate (EV) were given intramuscularly the same day as first implantation (Syncro-Mate-B). Implants were removed after eight days. Four bulls were then placed in each of two pastures containing half of the treated and half of the control heifers for 24 days after the time of the first implant removal. Progesterone concentrations from blood samples collected prior to the first treatment were used to determine reproductive status. The overall pregnancy rate 64 days after first implant removal for treated anestrous heifers (61%; 14 23 ) was similar (p > 0.25) to untreated (73%; 11 15 ) and treated (75%; 9 12 ) cyclic heifers, but higher (p < 0.1) than for untreated anestrous heifers (33%; 6 18 ). This treatment advantage resulted from an increased (p < 0.01) pregnancy rate after the second implant removal. In summary, repetitive norgestomet treatments enhanced pregnancy rate in anestrous heifers within a 24-day breeding season.

RESUMO

The various male genital organs of the experimental animals used in this investigation (rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog) showed a widely different localizations of alkaline and acid phosphatases. Alkaline phosphatase was presented as secretory, stromal, nuclear and vascular, while with acid phosphatase, distinction was made only between secretory and nuclear phosphatases. Although the morphological distributions of both enzymes were sometimes overlapping, they were not identical.
