RESUMO

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) represent a significant source of severe maternal and fetal morbidity. Screening strategies relying on traditional medical history and clinical risk factors have traditionally shown relatively modest performance, mainly in the prediction of preeclampsia, displaying a sensitivity of 37% for the early-onset form and 29% for the late-onset form. The development of more accurate predictive and diagnostic models of preeclampsia in the early stages of pregnancy represents a matter of high priority. The aim of the present paper is to create an effective second trimester prediction algorithm of early-onset HDP occurrence and severity, by combining the following two biochemical markers: a soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio and uterine artery Doppler ultrasound parameters, namely the pulsatility index (PI) and the resistivity index (RI), in a population of high-risk pregnant women, initially assessed through traditional risk factors. A prospective single-center observational longitudinal study was conducted, in which 100 women with singleton pregnancy and traditional clinical and medical history risk factors for preeclampsia were enrolled at 24 weeks of gestation. Shortly after study enrollment, all women had their sFlt-1 and PlGF levels and mean uterine artery PI and RI determined. All pregnancies were followed up until delivery. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis established algorithms based on cutoffs for the prediction of the later development of preeclampsia: PI 1.25 (96.15% sensitivity, 86.49% specificity), RI 0.62 (84.6% sensitivity, 89.2% specificity) and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio 59.55 (100% sensitivity, 89.2% specificity). The sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was the best predictor for preeclampsia, as it displayed the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.973. The prediction algorithm for the severe form of preeclampsia, complicated by fetal growth restriction leading to preterm birth, antepartum fetal demise or acute fetal distress with a cerebro-placental ratio of

RESUMO

Obesity and aging are associated with an inflammatory state, which represents the common background for a wide range of diseases. This study aims to explore the correlation between hsCRP, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and white blood cell count (WBC) and adipometrics (arm, waist, and hip circumferences: AC, WC, HC; total body fat mass: TBFM, visceral fat level: VFL, body mass index: BMI; waist/hip ratio: WHR; waist/height ratio: WHtR) in young and healthy adults aged 20-35 years old. The subjects were divided by BMI into the overweight/obesity (OW/OB) group and normal weight (NW) group, and by hsCRP level into Group 1 (<1 mg/L), Group 2 (≥1-2.99 mg/L), and Group 3 (≥3 mg/L). The concentration of all inflammatory biomarkers was significantly higher in the OW/OB group compared to the NW group, with the exception of IL-1ß. Significant positive correlations were found between hsCRP, TNF-α, WBC, and all adipometrics; between IL-6 and WHR, WHtR, BMI, TBFM, and VFL; and between IFN-γ and HC, BMI, and TBFM. IL-1ß correlates positively with WHR and VFL. In Groups 1-3, all the differences between the adipometrics showed significant differences. Subclinical inflammation persists in association with being overweight and obese in healthy young adults aged 20-35 years old.

RESUMO

Aortic dissection (AD) is a critical cardiovascular condition with the potential for devastating consequences. This study evaluated the histological changes in the aorta wall in patients with AD and aortic aneurysm (AA) who received surgical aortic replacement. Histopathological data showed that modifications of the media layer (p = 0.0197), myxomatous aspect (p = 0.0001), and subendothelial layer degeneration (p = 0.0107) were more frequently seen in AA versus AD samples. Patients with AA were approximately twice as likely to develop histological changes than those with AD (p = 0.0037). Patients with moderate or severe medial degeneration had a higher chance of developing AD (p = 0.0001). Because the histopathological score proved to be a predictor of both in-hospital and overall mortality, its evaluation should become the standard of care in any patients who undergo aortic replacement. Individualized postoperative management might be influenced by the histopathological aspect of the aortic layer.

RESUMO

Pregnancy represents a psychologically and emotionally vulnerable period, and research indicates that pregnant women have a higher prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression, debunking the myth that hormonal changes associated with pregnancy protect the mother. In recent years, several researchers have focused on the study of prenatal anxiety/depression-emotional disorders manifested by mood lability and low interest in activities-with a high prevalence. The main objective of this research was to conduct an antenatal screening in a cohort of pregnant women hospitalized for delivery in order to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression. The secondary objective was to identify the risk factors associated with depression and anxiety in women in the third trimester of pregnancy. We carried out a prospective study in which we evaluated 215 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy hospitalized for childbirth at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the Târgu-Mureș County Clinical Hospital. The research was carried out between December 2019 and December 2021. The results showed that age and the environment of origin are the strongest predictors of mental health during pregnancy (OR = 0.904, 95%CI: 0.826-0.991; p = 0.029). For women from urban areas, there is an increased probability of falling at a higher level on the dependent variable (moderate depression) (OR = 2.454, 95%CI: 1.086-5.545; p = 0.032). In terms of health behaviors, none of the variables were statistically significant predictors of the outcome variable. The study highlights the importance of monitoring mental health during pregnancy and identifying relevant risk factors to provide appropriate care to pregnant women and the need for interventions to support the mental health of pregnant women. Especially in Romania, where there is no antenatal or postnatal screening for depression or other mental health conditions, these results could be used to encourage the implementation of such screening programs and appropriate interventions.

RESUMO

Cyberbullying represents a major concern worldwide, especially among teenagers with major negative psychological impact. We performed a prospective online questionnaire-based study on 316 teenagers in order to assess the prevalence of cyberbullying in Romania, evaluate its psychosocial consequences, and examine the factors that may predispose them to bullying. Almost 50% of the responders stated that they have been previously bullied, with females having a higher risk of being harassed (P = .0043). Most of the victims were bullied on Facebook, Instagram, and video games. More than 53% of the victims included in our study benefit from help. We found that subjects who have been cyberbullied had a significantly higher risk of having bullied friends (P < .0001). Also, we identified a significant association between the teenagers' relationship with the parents and the incidence of bullying (P = .002). Domestic violence and the male gender were significant risk factors for committing cyberbullying (P = .0014/0.0020). Cyberbullying had a negative impact also on the harasser, and previous victims of cyberbullying had a significantly higher risk of becoming bullied (P < .0001). Also, we found a significant association between the type of substance and the perpetration of aggression (P < .0001). Further studies should focus on designing effective strategies in order to decrease the incidence of this harmful online act of bullying.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Cortisol, the stress hormone, is an important factor in initiating and maintaining lactation. Maternal suffering during pregnancy is predictive for the initiation and shorter duration of breastfeeding and can also lead to its termination. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the level of salivary cortisol in the third trimester of pregnancy and the initiation of breastfeeding in the postpartum period in a cohort of young pregnant women who wanted to exclusively breastfeed their newborns during hospitalization. Materials and Methods: For the study, full-term pregnant women were recruited between January and May 2022 in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the Mureș County Clinical Hospital. Socio-demographic, clinical obstetric and neonatal variables were collected. Breastfeeding efficiency was assessed using the LATCH Breastfeeding Assessment Tool at 24 and 48 h after birth. The mean value of the LATCH score assessed at 24 and 48 h of age was higher among mothers who had a higher mean value of salivary cortisol measured in the third trimester of pregnancy (p < 0.05). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to detect risk factors for the success of early breastfeeding initiation. Results: A quarter of pregnant women had a salivary cortisol level above normal limits during the third trimester of pregnancy. There is a statistically significant association between maternal smoking, alcohol consumption during pregnancy and the level of anxiety or depression. Conclusions: The most important finding of this study was that increased salivary cortisol in the last trimester of pregnancy was not associated with delayed initiation/absence of breastfeeding.

RESUMO

Adhesion remains a key element in dentistry, whether approached in prosthetics, odontology, or orthodontics. It is a continuously researched aspect, as improved materials and adhesive methods keep emerging in the market. No orthodontic treatment can be effective without the proper adhesion strength of the bonded elements on the teeth. The objective of this research, in the broad context of self-ligating versus conventional brackets, was to compare active and passive self-ligating systems with a conventional one by conducting an in vitro study on human-extracted premolars. Shear bond strength tests were executed by means of an advanced materials-testing machine that generated maximum load and tensile strength values. The data obtained underwent statistical analysis with a statistical threshold of p < 0.05. The results regarding the statistical significance were acquired when comparing the passive self-ligating system with the active self-ligating and conventional systems (load-at-maximum-load mean 204.9, SD 91.09, and p < 0.05). In this study, the passive self-ligating bracket system appears to present increased shear bond strength.

RESUMO

COVID-19 and PIMS represent two novel pathologies that have challenged the medical world during the last two years on account of their being very similar, but yet very different. Our aim was to comparatively assess children with SARS-CoV-2 infection and PIMS in terms of symptoms, clinical findings, laboratory parameters, echocardiography, and evolution. Our retrospective study included 46 children with COVID-19 (group 1), and 20 children with confirmed PIMS (group 2). We found no significant differences in terms of age, gender, and originating area between the two groups. We noticed that fever was significantly more common in the PIMS group as compared to COVID-19 group (p = 0.0217). In terms of laboratory parameters, increased bilirubin and creatinine were significantly more frequent in children with COVID-19 (p = 0.0064/p = 0.0064), while hypoalbuminemia and elevated ESR were significantly more common in those with PIMS (p < 0.0001/p = 0.0127). Moreover, prognosis parameters such as D-dimers, NT-proBNP, and CK-MB were also found to be significantly higher in the PIMS group as compared to COVID-19 group (p = 0.0003/p = 0.0182/p = 0.0007). In terms of complications, most were identified in PIMS group, among which cardiac and liver impairment along with dehydration were significantly more common in children diagnosed with PIMS as compared to those detected with COVID-19. Similarly, children with PIMS had a significantly higher chance to have pathological echocardiography changes. Although difficult, the distinction between COVID-19 and PIMS is crucial for the patient's long-term outcome.

RESUMO

Abdominal trauma is a common diagnosis for patients admitted to the emergency room. Evaluation of the severity of such patients can sometimes be difficult due to rapid hemodynamic changes caused by the activation of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory regulatory mechanisms. To evaluate the prognosis of trauma patients, it is crucial to identify these changes and adapt various treatment strategies. Using the records of the Mures County Emergency Clinical Hospital, 126 patients were included in the present study with traumatic splenic injury admitted over 6 years. Blood parameters such as the neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were determined, and the association between these and the severity of the traumatic injury [quantified as the injury severity score (ISS)] was calculated. We used linear and multiple regression analyses to identify and quantify the relationships. We found statistically significant associations between the ISS and the NLR (P=0.002), with an AUC of 0.816 and a cut-off value of NLR=6.075 (sensitivity=76.7%, specificity=74.3%), and between the ISS and hemoglobin (P<0.0001), hematocrit (P<0.0001), neutrophil count (P<0.0001), lymphocyte count (P=0.0224), and platelet count (P=0.0163). No association was found between the PLR and the severity of trauma. An elevated NLR at admission in trauma patients had significant predictive power for the severity of trauma. Patients with an NLR greater than the cut-off value of 6.075 were more likely to have suffered serious injuries and undergone deterioration.

RESUMO

Pregnancy is characterized by changes in neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and immune function. For this reason, pregnancy itself is perceived as a psychological "stress test". Research to date has focused on stress exposure. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of associated factors on the level of stress experienced by pregnant patients. We conducted a prospective study that included 215 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy, hospitalized in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic II in Târgu-Mureș, between December 2019 and December 2021, who were evaluated by the ABS II scale. All patients included in the study filled in a questionnaire that included 76 questions/items, in which all the data necessary for the study were recorded. The results obtained from the study showed that pregnant women in urban areas (53.49%) are more vulnerable than those in rural areas (46.51%), being influenced by social and professional stressors, social determinants playing a critical role in pregnancy and in the newborn. Patients who have had an imminent abortion in their current pregnancy have a significantly higher score of irrationality than those with normal pregnancy, which shows that their emotional state can negatively influence the phenomenon of irrationality. There is a statistically significant association between pregnancy type I (normal pregnancy or imminent pregnancy) and irrationality class (p = 0.0001; RR: 2.150, CI (95%): 1.154−4.007). In the case of women with desired pregnancies, the risk of developing irrationality class IV−V is 4.739 times higher, with the association being statistically significant (p < 0.0001; RR 4.739; CI (95%): 2.144−10.476). The analysis of the obtained results demonstrates the importance of contributing factors and identifies the possibility of stress disorders, occurring in the last trimester of pregnancy, disorders that can have direct effects on maternal and fetal health. We consider it extremely important to carry out evaluations throughout the pregnancy. At the same time, it is necessary to introduce a screening program to provide psychological counseling in the prenatal care of expectant mothers.

RESUMO

Friction is an intensely studied feature in orthodontics, as the sliding mechanics approach remains one of the most utilized techniques in current practice, and the question of whether self-ligating brackets produce less friction than conventional brackets still stands. The objective of this study was to compare a self-ligating system with different closing mechanisms and a conventional system with different ligating mechanisms regarding their frictional properties. Laboratory measurements were performed using an advanced materials testing machine generating tensile strength and load at maximum Load values, which were statistically analyzed and compared. These two parameters have been associated with the frictional resistance generated at the archwire-bracket slot interface. Statistically significant results were obtained when comparing the active self-ligating brackets with the passive self-ligating (tensile strength mean 1.953, SD 0.4231; load at maximum moad mean 6.000, SD 1.3000) and conventional brackets (tensile strength mean 1.953, SD 0.4231; load at maximum load mean 6.000, SD 1.3000), as well as when comparing the passive self-ligating brackets with the conventional brackets (tensile strength mean 1.708, SD 0.8628; load at maximum load mean 5.254, SD 2.645). The active self-ligating brackets tended to produce more friction when compared to the passive self-ligating brackets but were similar to conventional brackets with stainless steel ligatures.

RESUMO

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the fast progression of modern society, occupational stress has recently reached alarming levels with consequences for doctors' psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship among emotional stability, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction of medical doctors. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 280 medical doctors from Romania between February 2021 and September 2021, in the period between the third and fourth pandemic waves, who were evaluated by the DECAS, ASSET, and Satisfaction with Life scales. Our results showed that emotional stability is negatively correlated with psychological well-being (r = −0.526, p < 0.000) and positively correlated with life satisfaction (r = 0.319, p < 0.0001). Between psychological well-being and life satisfaction, we found a negative correlation (r = −0.046, p < 0.001). This study shows that there is a correlation among emotional stability, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction, which is why it can be considered that Romanian doctors have generated coping mechanisms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to define the relationship between several environmental, laboratory, and genetic factors, i.e., TLR2 and NLRP3 polymorphisms, and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in children, by comparing three different groups of pediatric subjects: H. pylori-induced gastritis, non-H. pylori gastritis, and healthy controls. Our final study sample included 269 children, which were divided into three groups according to the histopathological exam: group 1 with 51 children with H. pylori-induced gastritis, group 2 with 103 children with H. pylori-negative gastritis, and group 3 (control group) with 115 children without any histopathological changes. All children underwent a thorough anamnesis, clinical exam, laboratory tests, and upper digestive endoscopy with gastric biopsy for rapid urease test, histopathological exam, and genetic analysis of TLR2 rs3804099, TLR2 rs3804100, and NLRP3 rs10754558 gene polymorphisms. We noticed a significant association between living conditions and the type of gastritis (p < 0.0001). Both rapid urease and serological tests were significantly associated with the presence of H. pylori (p < 0.0001). The CT variant genotype of TLR2 rs380499 was significantly associated with neutrophil count (p = 0.0325). We noticed a significant association between the CC variant genotype of NLRP3 rs10754558 and leucocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, as well as ALT (p = 0.0185, p = 0.0379, p = 0.0483, p = 0.0356). Based on these findings, we state that poor living conditions and rural areas represent risk factors for H. pylori infection. The rapid urease test is a reliable diagnostic tool for this infection. CT and TT carriers of TLR2 rs3804099, as well as CC carriers of NLRP3 rs10754558, might display a more severe degree of systemic inflammation.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the level of creativity and personality traits and their mutual influence on medical students using the DECAS and BWAS. We performed a prospective descriptive study on 119 medical students from Târgu Mureș, Romania between November 2020 and July 2021, who answered questions relating to the BWAS and DECAS scales to evaluate their creativity and personality traits. Our findings pointed out a reverse correlation between age and both the original and revised BWAS (r = -0.2037, p = 0.0263; r = -0.1931, p = 0.0354). In terms of extraversion, we found a significant positive correlation for both openness (r = 0.3032, p = 0.0008) and emotional stability (r = 0.2868, p = 0.0016) and a negative correlation between extraversion and agreeability (r = -0.2394, p = 0.0087). Regarding creativity, we found positive correlations between emotional stability and both the original and revised BWAS (r = 0.20, p = 0.0279; r = 0.20, p = 0.0245). Medical students' creativity might be positively influenced by emotional stability and seems to decrease with age. Higher extraversion scores could be related to increased openness and emotional stability as well as decreased agreeability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Innate immunity was found to be associated with both persistence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and increased risk of gastric cancer. AIM: To identify the risk factors associated with H. pylori infection and to establish the role of TLR9 rs352140 in suppressing or promoting inflammation related to this infection in children. METHODS: We performed a study of 155 children with digestive symptoms, who were divided into two groups according to the histopathological exam: Group 1 - 48 children with H. pylori-induced chronic gastritis, and Group 2 - control group. RESULTS: Rural area and poor living conditions were significantly associated with H. pylori chronic gastritis (P = 0.0042/P < 0.0001). Both positive immunoglobulin A anti H. pylori and the rapid urease test were significantly associated with H. pylori infection (P < 0.0001). Significantly higher values of leukocytes and neutrophils within the peripheral blood were found in children with H. pylori chronic gastritis (P = 0.111/P = 0.284). We found a significant positive correlation between the variant TT genotype of TLR9 rs352140 polymorphism and both leucocytes and neutrophils (P = 0.0225/P = 0.0292). CONCLUSION: Variant TT genotype carriers of the TLR9 rs352140 gene polymorphism might have a more severe degree of inflammation.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) are associated with pregnancy-related complications, poor birth outcomes, and increased birth weight (BW).The aims of this study were to assess the relationship between excessive GWG and gestational inflammatory status in terms of blood parameters, as well as its influence on newborn's outcomes. We performed a prospective study on 176 pregnant women divided into 2 groups depending on the GWG: group 1-normal GWG, 80 cases; and group 2-high GWG, 96 cases. The statistical analysis was performed using the GraphPad Prism program, trial variant. We performed a thorough anamnesis and clinical examination in all mothers and their newborns, as well as an assessment of multiple laboratory parameters. The levels of both platelets and triglycerides were significantly higher in pregnant women from high GWG group (P = .0165/P = .0247). The newborns whose mothers presented an excessive GWG were found with a significantly higher BW as compared to those with normal GWG mothers (P = .0023). We obtained a positive correlation between the mothers' and newborns' values for hemoglobin, high-density lipoprotein, leucocytes, and platelets/lymphocytes ratio (P = .0002/P = .0313/P = .0137). Moreover, a significant positive correlation was found between GWG and BW (r = 0.2049, 95% CI: 0.0588-0.3425, P = .0064).Our findings sustain the hypothesis that maternal obesity is a risk factor for macrosomia and childhood obesity since we found a positive correlation between GWG and BW. Women with high GWG expressed significantly higher levels of platelets and triglycerides suggesting a subclinical inflammation associated to excessive fat accumulation. The inflammation transfer from mother to fetus in our study was suggested by the positive correlations between maternal and neonatal leukocytes and platelets/lymphocytes ratio.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Overweight might represent only the early stage of obesity or it might act as a trigger of self-awareness turning into an ideal chance for preventing further obesity development. The aim of this study was to assess the differences between overweight and obese children in terms of anthropometric, low-grade systemic inflammation, liver impairment and atherosclerotic risk.We performed a study on 132 children aged between 5 and 18 years, divided according to the BMI into 2 groups: group 1 to 76 obese children, and group 2 to 56 overweight children, assessing anthropometric, laboratory and elastography parameters. We obtained significantly higher values of anthropometric parameters in obese children versus overweight ones. We found higher levels of leukocytes, lymphocytes, AST, ALT, and E median (P = .0345, P = .0103, P < .0001, P = .0008 and P < .0001) in the obese group as compared to the overweight one. BMI was positively correlated with neutrophils, NLR, ESR, glycemia, anthropometric parameters, and E median (P = .0007/<.0001/.0018/.0044/<.0001/<.0001/<.0001/<.0001/<.0001/.0204); and negatively with lymphocytes and HDL-cholesterol (r = -0.2747/-0.2181, P = .0116/.0120).Our study underlined significant differences between overweight and obese children in terms of inflammatory status and liver impairment suggesting that the risk is directly related to the increase in BMI.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Pregnant women with excessive gestational weight gain express an inflammatory status with multiple negative effects on birth outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between gestational weight gain at different gestational ages and inflammatory status in pregnant women and their newborns assessing both interleukin 6 and 8, as well as hepcidin in these couples. Our study included 170 pregnant women and their newborns. Pregnant women were clinically assessed at the end of the 1st trimester and at term, whereas the newborns were assessed over the first 3 days of life. The levels of interleukin 6, 8 and hepcidin were measured in both pregnant women and their newborns. We noticed higher levels of interleukin 6, interleukin 8 and hepcidin in pregnant women at the time of delivery as compared to the end of the 1st trimester. We observed a direct significant correlation between gestational weight gain at the time of delivery and interleukin 8 in both mothers [r = 0.1834, 95% CI: 0.0293-0.3290, (P = .0167)] and newborns [r = 0.1790, 95% CI: 0.0248-0.3249, (P = .0195)]. Our study underlined that a higher gestational weight gain resulted in a significantly higher birth weight [r = 0.2190, 95% CI: 0.0663-0.3617, (P = .0041)].Our findings suggest that interleukin 8 might be an important indicator of inflammatory status in both mothers and newborns. Moreover, excessive gestational weight gain was associated with an increase in birth weight.

RESUMO

Background: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe form of stroke. The efficacy of surgery as ICH treatment is controversial. We sought to compare the 30-day postoperative mortality rate between patients with surgically and medically treated ICH; Methods: This prospective study enrolled patients consecutively diagnosed with ICH and treated between 2017 and 2019. Patients meeting the study surgical indications were assigned to either surgical or medical treatment. The relationship between Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, age, ICH location, ICH volume, and 30-day mortality was analyzed. Results: A total of 174 ICH patients were enrolled in this study. Of these, 136 met the surgery criteria; 65 of these underwent surgery (Group A), and 71 received medical treatment (Group B). Age and ICH location did not modify mortality. Although surgery did not overall improve mortality some better postsurgical outcomes were observed among patients surgically treated with GCS scores of at least 10 points and ICH volumes between 30 to 50 mL; Conclusions: Despite achieving an immediate reduction in intracranial pressure, surgery seems to be advantageous only for patients with ICH volumes between 30 to 50 mL and GCS scores of 10 points or higher.

RESUMO

Non-invasive biomarkers, such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios, may predict inflammation in various disorders, including gastritis, according to recent data. Nevertheless, various studies reported an association between Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and immune thrombocytopenia in both adults and pediatric patients. The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of pediatric gastritis, caused or not by H pylori infection on erythrocytes, their parameters, thrombocytes, mean platelet volume, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR).We performed a prospective, case-control study on 151 patients aged between 1 and 17 years who presented with chronic dyspeptic symptoms. An upper digestive endoscopy with gastric biopsies and a complete blood count was performed in each case.Control group consisted of 67 patients with normal histological findings, while the two study groups were divided into group 1-H pylori-induced gastritis (31 patients) and group 2-non-H pylori-induced gastritis (53 patients). Children from the rural area were more likely to develop both types of gastritis (P < .01). No significant difference was found between either of the study groups and control group in terms of platelets, mean platelet volume, NLR and PLR (P > .05). However, significantly higher values of lymphocytes were associated with non-H pylori-induced gastritis (P < .01). Comparison of the two study groups did not reflect any significant differences in terms of hematological parameters. When assessing these constants in relation to gastritis severity, severe gastritis led to a compelling decrease in hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Htc) levels. The comparison of parameters between severe, moderate, and mild gastritis did not reveal any significant results.Childhood and adolescent gastritis does not produce a significant effect upon platelet counts, their mean volume, PLR or NLR, according to our study. An important increase in lymphocyte count might predict non-H pylori pediatric gastritis. Moreover, severe gastritis might result in an important decrease in Hb and Htc levels.
