RESUMO

We present a unique data set of selected physicochemical parameters characterizing the environment of the Baltic coastal lakes within Polish borders. The peculiarity of the system derives principally from the interaction of the lakes with a sea of relatively low salinity. In contrast to our best understanding of the state of biological knowledge, the abiotic parameters of coastal lakes along the southern Baltic Sea have never previously been so comprehensively supplemented. The database consists of physicochemical properties of 13 coastal lakes based on the analytical assessment of 419 water samples collected seasonally between 2014 and 2019. Water properties were analyzed according to the connection of the lakes to the Baltic Sea using a total of 23 predictors. The lakes were classified as closed, intermittently connected, or open. Based on the physicochemical data, a relationship between the hydrological connection between the lakes and the sea was determined. The data collected could be used to monitor ongoing global climate change at the biosphere level.

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is a common arrhythmia in adults. Its occurrence depends on the presence of the reentry circuit and the trigger of the paroxysm. Stress, emotional factors, and comorbidities favour the occurrence of such an episode. We hypothesized that the occurrence of PSVT follows extreme thermal episodes. The retrospective analysis was based on the data collected from three hospital emergency departments in Poland (Olsztyn, Radom, and Wroclaw) involving 816 admissions for PSVT in the period of 2016-2021. To test the hypothesis, we applied the Universal Climate Thermal Index (UTCI) to objectively determine exposure to cold or heat stress. The risk (RR) for PSVT increased to 1.37 (p = 0.006) in cold stress and 1.24 (p = 0.05) in heat stress when compared to thermoneutral conditions. The likelihood of PSVT during cold/heat stress is higher in women (RR = 1.59, p< 0.001 and RR = 1.36, p = 0.024, respectively) than in men (RR = 0.64 at p = 0.088 and RR = 0.78, p = 0.083, respectively). The susceptibility for PSVT was even higher in all groups of women after exclusion of perimenopausal group of women, in thermal stress (RR = 1.74, p< 0.001, RR = 1.56, p = 0.029, respectively). Females, particularly at the perimenopausal stage and men irrespective of age were less likely to develop PSVT under thermal stress as compared to thermoneutral conditions. Progress in climate change requires searching for universal methods and tools to monitor relationships between humans and climate. Our paper confirms that the UTCI is the universal tool describing the impact of thermal stress on the human body and its high usefulness in medical researches.

Coastal lakes are subject to multiple stressors, among which land use, hydrological connectivity, and salinity have the greatest effect on their biodiversity. We studied the effects that various land cover types (CORINE) of coastal lake watersheds had on macrophyte diversity in ten coastal lakes along the southern Baltic coast as characterised by twelve phytocenotic indices: these being a number of communities, Shannon-Wiener diversity, evenness, and indices of taxonomic distinctiveness of plant communities: vegetation coverage; colonisation index; share of the phytolittoral area in the total lake area, as well as shares of nympheides, pondweeds, charophytes, marine, emerged and submerged communities in the total lake area. The effects were checked for three groups of lakes distinguished by differences in salinity-freshwater (F, 5), transitional (T, 4), and brackish (B, 1)-in which a total of 48 macrophyte communities were identified. The most abundant in aquatic phytocoenoses were lakes of T type. A partial least squares regression model (PLS-R) showed a stronger impact of land-use types in immediate vicinities and entire watersheds than the impact of physico-chemical properties of water on phytocenotic indices in the lakes. Macrophyte diversity was relatively low in urban and agricultural catchments and relatively high in forest and wetland areas. Agriculture had a negative impact on the number of macrophyte communities in F lakes and, in T lakes, on the number of macrophyte communities, biodiversity, evenness, and proportion of emerged, submerged, and marine communities. Urban areas contributed to lower values of evenness, vegetation coverage, and share of marine communities in F, but, in T, to lower the number of macrophyte communities, evenness, and proportion of submerged and marine communities. Our results confirm the significant impact of land use on macrophyte diversity in coastal aquatic ecosystems. Combined analysis of anthropogenic and natural descriptors is a prerequisite for analysing human threats to biodiversity in coastal lakes. Macrophyte community-based measures of biodiversity are sensitive indicators of anthropogenic impact on the ecological condition of coastal ecosystems.

The response of bacterioplankton structure to salinity level in coastal lakes (n = 9) along the southern Baltic Sea coastline was studied. In terms of mean salinity levels (0.2−5.2 PSU), the lakes represented freshwater, transitional, and brackish types. Results showed that salinity determines the spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of microorganisms in costal lakes. Increased salinity contributed to a significant decline in total bacterial numbers (TBN). The TBN was lowest in brackish lakes in autumn (4 × 106 cells/mL) and highest in freshwater lakes in summer (7.11 × 106 cells/mL). The groups of Proteobacteria are appropriate bioindicators in any classifications of coastal ecosystems, particularly at low-haline stress. Alpha- and Gamma- subclasses of Proteobacteria are identifiers for brackish habitats, while Betaproteobacteria, due to their intolerance to haline stress, prefer freshwater habitats. Counts of euryhaline Actinobacteria, the dominant group of bacterioplankton (31.8%), decreased significantly with increased salinity. Actinobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria were identifiers of transitional lakes. Cytophaga-Flavobacteria showed affinity with freshwater ecosystems, but this relation was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The bacteria groups correlated with other physico-chemical parameters of water, such as oxygenation (Actinobacteria) or organic carbon (Betaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria). The impact of hydrological connectivity and salt-water interference on the microbiota structure and biogeochemistry of coastal waters should be considered in the assessment of the ecological status of coastal lakes.

This study aimed to compare concentrations of chlorophyll-a between individual phytoplankton groups for four shallow Baltic coastal lakes, varying in type of connection with the sea. For two years, the research focused on quantifying the effects of abiotic factors-concentrations of heavy metals (Ba, Bi, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and hydrological connectivity-on phytoplankton composition, biomass, and photosynthetic activity. Our results show that hydrological factors are the main predictors of phytoplankton structure. The lakes differed in salinity: freshwater vs. brackish vs. transitional lakes. Irrespective of lake type, the dominant group was that of Cyanobacteria (~80%), but their percentage contribution was lower in the brackish lake. Baltic seawater intrusion resulted in a decrease in heavy-metal concentrations in lake water for Fe, Zn, Pb, and Bi. Redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested positive effects of some heavy metals on the biomass of the Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta. For the Cryptophyta only, a slight decrease in biomass was linked with increased metal concentrations in open water.

The assessment of the impact of meteorological factors on the epidemiology of various diseases and on human pathophysiology and physiology requires a comprehensive approach and new tools independent of currently occurring climate change. The thermal comfort index, i.e., Universal Climate Thermal Index (UTCI), is gaining more and more recognition from researchers interested in such assessments. This index facilitates the evaluation of the impact of cold stress and heat stress on the human organism and the assessment of the incidence of weather-related diseases. This work aims at identifying those areas of medical science for which the UTCI was applied for scientific research as well as its popularization among clinicians, epidemiologists, and specialists in public health management. This is a systematic review of literature found in Pubmed, Sciencedirect and Web of Science databases from which, consistent with PRISMA guidelines, original papers employing the UTCI in studies related to health, physiological parameters, and epidemiologic applications were extracted. Out of the total number of 367 papers identified in the databases, 33 original works were included in the analysis. The selected publications were analyzed in terms of determining the areas of medical science in which the UTCI was applied. The majority of studies were devoted to the broadly understood mortality, cardiac events, and emergency medicine. A significant disproportion between publications discussing heat stress and those utilizing the UTCI for its assessment was revealed.

Human activities influence the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria in indoor air. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the experimental rearing of European grayling and European perch in a recirculating aquaculture system on the contamination of indoor air with potentially pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila (PPAH) and the resulting health risks to humans. The PPAH counts, their resistance to seven antibiotics, and the multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index were determined in samples of indoor air and water from rearing tanks. The PPAH counts were highest in the laboratory bioaerosol where two fish species were reared. The calculated indoor/outdoor ratio (I/O > 1) demonstrated that tank water was the internal source of PPAH emissions. The unconstrained PCA revealed strong positive relationships (p ≤ 0.05) between the PPAH counts in the indoor air and water samples. Most of the PPAH strains isolated from laboratory air were resistant to tetracycline, cefotaxime, and erythromycin, and 26-82% of the isolates exhibited multiple drug resistance. The values of the MAR index were similar in samples of laboratory air and water (0.23-0.34 and 0.24-0.36, respectively). Agglomerative clustering revealed two clusters of strains isolated from laboratory air and tank water. The results of this study indicate that aquaculture can be a source of indoor air contamination with PPAH.

Hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for renal and cardiovascular diseases and is closely associated with gout episodes. It is caused, inter alia, by nutritional habits and genetic factors, and also displays seasonal variability conditioned by meteorological factors. The impact of meteorological factors, including both cold and heat stress, on the human physiology is presented based on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) - a biometeorological index derived from an analysis of human thermal balance. The aim of our study was to establish whether seasonal variations significantly affect routinely measured urine acid (UA) levels and could eventually support the clinical decision making process, as well as assessing whether UTCI values are correlated with UA levels in blood serum. This work presents a retrospective epidemiological study of data collected in Olsztyn (Poland). Study material comprised 54,536 results of ambulatory tests measuring UA levels, performed during the period 2016-2019. The analysis concerned correlations between UA and the ages of female and male subjects as well as existing biometeorological conditions as represented by UTCI values in an annual cycle. UA levels in females were found to be lower (4.94 ± 1.37 SD) as compared to those of males (6.13 ± 1.43 SD) and demonstrated a strong positive correlation with age. UA values differed significantly (p < 0.05) on days characterized by cold stress and heat stress, for the oldest age group. UA levels were found to differ depending on the season, but these relationships were not statistically significant, except for significantly higher UA levels in females in autumn (p < 0.001). However, there was an evident difference in population UA levels under cold stress conditions (lower) and heat stress conditions (higher) in the elderly. The UTCI is an adequate predictor of population variations in UA levels since it takes into account the variability of local meteorological conditions.

Benthic communities were studied in nine Polish coastal lakes of the Baltic Sea; representing three levels of hydrological connection with the sea (isolated, periodically connected, and permanently connected), with resultant differences in salinity (freshwater, transitional, and brackish). The lakes classified in this way allowed us to investigate biodiversity in relation to the degree of environmental pressure. Stress intensity in coastal water bodies, resulting from contrasting marine and terrestrial influences, varied from mild to severe. Spatial variation in environmental predictors affected species richness more strongly than seasonal fluctuations. The broader the spatial salinity gradient, the smaller the species number recorded. Differences in the intensity of natural instability only slightly affected species number and α-diversity. In Baltic coastal lakes, characterized by low salinity (max. 7.5 PSU), benthic faunal communities were dominated by large populations of opportunistic species. This applied primarily to closed systems and those periodically influenced by seawater intrusion. The marine component of fauna played a more important role in increasing the diversity of benthos in permanently open water bodies (brackish). The highest density of benthic fauna was recorded in them, whereas low values were associated with the strongest instability, observed in lakes periodically linked with the sea (transitional).

We investigated the response of benthic macroinvertebrates in the eulittoral, infralittoral, and sublittoral zones, in two segments of the freshwater Lake Wicko on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Our results showed that the morphometry of lakes plays a major role as a factor structuring the macroinvertebrates communities. Two parts of the lake, different in size and depth, show decreasing differences in the trophic state, abundance, diversity and number of indicator species of benthic fauna with the depth gradient. The most significant differences were observed between the littoral zones of both segments. Similar environmental conditions in the sublittoral zones corresponded to the simplified structure of the benthic macroinvertebrates communities. In the infralittoral zone, the most significant differences between the two segments, were recorded for mollusks and large crustaceans as well as the Oligochaeta/Chironomidae abundance ratio. In the sublittoral zone, the diversity of chironomids differed most strongly. Lower species diversity was found in the part of the lake with a slight depth decrease. Shredders reached significantly higher values in eulittoral and infralittoral of the deeper lake segment. Average Score Per Taxon increased with a depth gradient. We recommend testing benthic macroinvertebrates in lakes with different morphometrics individually for each depth zone.

The association of fainting with specific situations and circumstances, such as the sight of blood, response to pain, prolonged standing position and fatigue, is well recognized and described in medical literature. Clinical experience also indicates that specific, local physical conditions, such as exposure to heat or remaining in a small, stuffy room may also trigger fainting. This paper verifies the hypothesis concerning the association between atmospheric conditions and the incidence of fainting. This is a retrospective cohort study of data relating to fainting collected in the city of Olsztyn (Poland). In total, 10,449 emergency service interventions in the period 2012-2019 that concluded with the R55 (syncope and collapse) diagnosis according to the ICD 10 were analyzed. The obtained data were matched with meteorological data, including basic parameters (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure) and complex parameters, with special attention given to the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). This index is derived from an analysis of human thermal balance and is particularly useful for describing the organism's response to thermal stress. Statistically significant differences in the occurrences of fainting depending on the season were revealed (more in the summer), but only for women. Among the analyzed meteorological and biometeorological parameters, statistical significance was found for parameters relating to temperature, with the greatest usefulness revealed for the UTCI. Periods with heat stress were more conducive to fainting, whereas the result for the general population was influenced by women in two age groups: 25-45 and 46-60. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt worldwide to utilize the UTCI as a predictor of fainting. Our results confirmed the applicability of the UTCI as a universal biometeorological tool for the assessment of relationships between atmospheric conditions and the incidence of fainting.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic affected the functioning of healthcare systems (HSs) in a way that was difficult to foresee earlier. It quickened the introduction of e-medicine, and changed the manner and number of services provided in the open medical setting. Aim: To assess variations in the consultation rate of patients in primary healthcare centers (PHCs) in consecutive months of the pandemic. Method: Data collected from two PHCs located in Olsztyn (Poland) were analyzed retrospectively. Collectively, these two centers provide care for approximately 20,000 inhabitants and perform approximately 100,000 medical services annually. The analysis was based on data covering the period April-July of the years 2010-2020, consisting in total of 337,510 medical services records. Results: A large, statistically significant decrease in the consultation rate (consultation rate understood as the number of individuals seeking consultation in relation to the number of people under care in a given time period) was revealed in each age group in the initial phase of the pandemic. In consecutive months, the approximated consultation rate achieved mean long-term values. Conclusions. The largest reduction in the consultation rate was revealed in the youngest age group, with the smallest occurring in the oldest. In the group of patients older than 65 years of age, the consultation rate after 3 months of the pandemic was the same as before the outbreak. Variations in the consultation rate were independent of the epidemiological situation. During the study, we observed an increased level of the administrative and paperwork activities carried out by PHC physicians.

The incidence of asthma exacerbation depends on atmospheric conditions, including such meteorological factors as the ambient temperature, relative air humidity or concentration of atmospheric aerosols. An assessment of relations between the frequency of asthma exacerbation and environmental conditions was made according to the meteorological components, the biometeorological index UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index), as well as selected air quality parameters, including concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5. The study was conducted on the basis of a retrospective analysis of medical data collected at the Independent Public Hospital of Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Diseases in Olsztyn (Poland). Our analysis of patient data (from 1 January 2013 until 31 December 2017) showed a significant correlation between the number of asthma exacerbation and the UTCI value. More frequent asthma exacerbations are observed in patients aged over 65 years when air humidity increases. The UTCI values contained within class 5, describing thermoneutral conditions, correspond to an average frequency of asthma exacerbation. A decline in the UTCI value leads to a reduced number of asthma exacerbation, while a rise makes the cases of asthma exacerbations increase.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HT) affects >1/3 of adult populations in developed countries. Several studies reported periodic changes in blood pressure (BP) values depending on atmospheric conditions, and analyzed the impact of outdoor temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity and other meteorological parameters. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is a bio-meteorological index derived from an analysis of human thermal balance that comprehensively describes the impact of meteorological factors, including both cold stress and heat stress and their physiological consequences. AIM: Our aim was to assess the relationship between UTCI values and the number of consultations for HT within the framework of the healthcare system. METHODS: This work presents a retrospective epidemiological study of data collected in Olsztyn (Poland), characterized by cold climate type. The analytical material comprised 5578 consultations in emergency departments (EDs) due to HT. RESULTS: Seasonal differences in the numbers of HT consultations with a significant increase in winter months were noticed, especially as regards women. Under cold stress conditions, the relative risk (RR) related to consultations for HT was 2-fold higher for women as compared to thermoneutral conditions (p < 0.001). For men these differences were also statistically significant, though at a much smaller level (p = 0.03). The increased RR of HT due to cold stress was found among younger and older women contrary to the women at the perimenopausal age. CONCLUSIONS: Cold stress should be considered as a significant risk factor among patients, particularly women, diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases. The UTCI is an adequate bio-meteorological tool for the assessment of relationships between atmospheric conditions and occurrence of cardiac symptoms.

Lipid disorders, especially hypercholesterolemia, are one of the most thoroughly investigated cardiovascular risk factors. Their correlation with biometeorological conditions has been reported, with authors stressing seasonal increases of total cholesterol (TC) levels, mostly occurring in winter. This study aims at determining the correlation between the level of lipid parameters (LP) and meteorological conditions, analyzing seasonal variations in LP levels, and attempting to answer the following questions: do changes in LP levels result from the organism's response to cold or heat stress, or are they secondary to seasonal dietary variations? An observational study comprised ambulatory patients from the city of Olsztyn (Poland), for whom laboratory test were performed in 2016-2018, with 106,325 records of TC, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides (TG). LP levels were matched with atmospheric conditions on the day when the test was conducted and expressed by the universal thermal climate index (UTCI). We demonstrated seasonal increases of TC in cold stress (in wintertime) and of TG in heat stress (summer). The analysis of LP levels in specific periods revealed the increase of TC levels after holidays (i.e., Christmas and Easter) in men by 4.56%, and the increase of TG levels in women by 13.46% in the same period. Our results suggest the secondary, diet-dependent underlying cause of the observed changes. This work contributes to the discussion concerning the impact of biometeorological factors on LP levels and may be of significance when planning population-dedicated preventive activities.

Microbiological activity is an important parameter for understanding the functioning of different environments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate the quantity and contribution of metabolically active at the single-cell level bacteria in the microbial community in peat-bog lakes. To determine different aspects of the metabolic activity of bacteria, four fluorescent staining methods (Dehydrogenase/Electron Transport System Activity -CTC+, Nucleoid Containing Cells- NuCC+, Active Bacteria with Intact Ribosome Structures- RIB+ and Active Bacteria With an Intact Membrane-MEM+) were applied. We identified four natural peat-bog lakes in Northern Europe to determine which factors-community (bacterial factors) or environment (hydrochemical and physical factors)-have a significant influence on the quantitative dynamics of metabolically active microorganisms, in terms of seasonal and habitat changes. The results show that change in the amount of abiotic components such as DOC, TN, and TOC can result in stress, which may limit a function but does not lead to losing all other metabolic functions in the community-forming bacteria. In nutrient-poor peat bog lakes, nutrients and organic carbon are factors which regulate the overall activity of the community.

Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are one of the most frequent reasons for medical consultations. As air temperature decreases, but also in connection with other meteorological parameters, evident seasonal fluctuations in the number of consultations for RTI can be observed. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is a complex meteorological index derived from an analysis of human thermal balance that depends on air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed. Our aims were to check if this index, although never used before for that purpose, is an adequate tool for forecasting seasonal increases in RTI prevalence. This study is a retrospective analysis of patients' consultations with general practitioners in the period of 2012-2015 (453,674 records) recorded in the city of Olsztyn (Poland), which is characterized by a cold climate type (Dfb). The values of air temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative air humidity, wind speed, and UTCI were used for a statistical analysis and a mathematical analysis of curve fitting in order to determine correlations between analyzed meteorological parameters and a number of medical consultations for RTI. Analysis of the number of medical consultations for RTI revealed an evident seasonal pattern in a 4-year observation period, with a strong inverse correlation between the number of patients with RTI and the UTCI. A statistically significant increase in the number of patients with RTI appeared when the UTCI decreased, especially when it reached the classes of strong cold stress and very strong cold stress. In conclusion, the UTCI is a valuable predictive parameter for forecasting seasonal increases in RTI cases. Its decrease may initiate a seasonal increased prevalence. This effect is strongest about the 10th day following a change in the thermal climate conditions and is not continuous. A larger number of consultations for RTI after weekends and holidays (the Monday effect) may blur the results of statistical analyses.

The research reported focuses on reproduction of the river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis,(Linnaeus, 1758) in controlled conditions. There was specific emphasis on fish harvesting dates (autumn and spring), holding conditions and reproduction in a controlled environment. Attempts were also made to synchronize the time of ovulation among river lampreys, egg and sperm collections. Hormonal stimulation was conducted using carp pituitary homogenate (CPH) at a total dose of 4 mg/kg which allowed for shortening of the egg-laying period from 2 to 3 weeks to a few days while sustaining embryo survival rates and larvae quality. River lamprey males were found to not require hormonal treatment to yield good-quality sperm, as measured using the CASA system. River lamprey broodstocks adapted well to different manipulations in hatchery conditions when harvested in the autumn and spring. The results of the present study may be used to restore endangered natural populations of the river lamprey (egg and sperm collection, fertilization or gamete preservation) because ovulation and spermiation synchronization is very difficult to achieve without hormonal treatment in controlled conditions.

The macrozoobenthic diversity patterns along a brackish-freshwater salinity gradient have been identified, considering effects of differences in the level of hydrological connection of coastal lakes with the sea on the structure of benthic invertebrate communities. The study is based on samples from six coastal lakes located along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland. The analysis of environmental and biological data confirmed the existence of stable phases (brackish water vs. freshwater), but as a result of periodical intrusion of seawater, adaptation of animal communities takes place, which was reflected in low values of the predictors describing them (number of taxa, density and diversity). Redundancy analysis indicates that values of conductivity and salinity are the major factors that determine the abundance of dominant groups of benthic fauna. The gradient of hydrological connection of the lakes with the sea accounted for 50% of the variance in biological data, physico-chemical variables for 25%, trophic variables for 15%, and only 9% of the variance was unexplained. The major implication of our results is that coastal lakes that differ only slightly in salinity can have alternative, regional patterns of diversity of structure of benthic fauna. Periodical inflow of brackish waters initiates adaptive cycles of benthic fauna, and their frequency is strongly linked with the hydrological regime. The rhythm of the inflow of seawater is variable, so that management and protection of coastal lakes are extremely complicated.

The aim of the present study was to identify the factors that influence the composition of methanogens and methanotrophs in the background prokaryotic community in peat bog lakes. We hypothesized that the microbial composition is a function of the physicochemical conditions of the water and a function of depth-dependent oxygen (DO) concentrations. To address this aim, we collected water samples from subsurface and near-bottom layers, representing oxic and anoxic conditions in 4 peat bog lakes in NE Poland. The structure of methanogenic Archaea and methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) was determined with double labeled-fluorescence in situ hybridization (DOPE-FISH). The results showed significant differences in Procaryota communities between the oxic (subsurface) and suboxic/anoxic (near-bottom) layers in peat bog lakes (t-test, p < 0.05). The methanogens from the Archaea domain were observed in anoxic periods, while methanotrophs were present regardless of water depth and season. The abundance of methanogens was inversely correlated with DO and CO2. Methanotrophs adapted better to the changing habitat conditions. The nonmetrical multidimensional scaling (NMS) and partial least square regression (PLS-R) models showed that the methanotrophs in subsurface layers are positively associated with temperature, DOC, and TON while negatively associated with pH. The DO availability is not a prerequisite condition for the presence of methanothrophs. The most important factors for MOB at the bottom were CO2 and TON. Due to a significant role of methanotrophs in the control of the methane emission flux rates, there is a need for further research on factors responsible for methanotroph development in peat bog lakes.
