OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles dispersed in glycerol or water, serving as optical clearing agents nanocolloids (OCAs-NC), for improving optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and highlighting incipient lesions in ex vivo human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve human teeth with incipient lesions were divided into seven groups according to the OCA-NC; they were subjected to G1 (air), G2 (glycerol), G3 (TiO2 0.1%), G4 (TiO2 0.01%), G5 (TiO2 0.001%), G6 (AgNO3 10%), and G7 (AgNO3 100%). The OCA-NC was applied to the occlusal surface, and two-dimensional images of the specimens were analyzed using OCT (930 nm central wavelength; 100 nm bandwidth; 5 mW output power; axial resolution of 7/5.3 µm in water and air, respectively; lateral resolution of 8 µm; and light penetration depth of 1.6 mm inside the sample). RESULTS: The findings demonstrated that the utilization of OCAs-NC containing metallic or dielectric nanoparticles (AgNO3 and TiO2) led to improved differentiation between sound and demineralized enamel on occlusal surfaces. Additionally, it enhanced the depth of image penetration when analyzing this hard tissue with OCT. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the current context of minimally invasive dentistry, the use of OCAs-NC in conjunction with OCT can provide clinicians with early diagnosis, allowing for the determination of less/more invasive therapies and consequently halting the disease before cavitation of dental tissues occurs.

Background: Failures in glass fiber post (GFP) retention may be associated with low adhesion achieved in root dentin. Material and Methods: 55 single-rooted premolars were endodontically treated and distributed according to different adhesion strategies (n=11): G1: RelyX ARC (3M ESPE; etch-rinse strategy); G2: Relyx Ultimate (3M ESPE; etch-rinse strategy); G3: AllCem (FGM; etch-rinse strategy); G4: Relyx Ultimate (3M ESPE; self-etching strategy); G5: RelyX U200 (3M ESPE; self-adhesive strategy). For Bonding Strength (BS) analysis, the roots were sectioned in slices (1.0mm thickness) corresponding to each root third and submitted to push-out test. The type of failure was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The highest BS averages were found in G2 and G3. However, in the middle and apical root thirds, G3 showed statistically similar results to G4 and G5. In the cervical and middle third, G1 was statistically similar to G4 and G5. The mixed type of failure was the most common in all groups. Conclusions: Self-etching (G4) and self-adhesive resin (G5) cements, showed similar BS results of immediate bonding in the cementation of GFP compared to conventional resin cements (G1, G2, G3). This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of spiral polishing systems in restorative materials through optical coherence tomography (OCT). Performance of spiral polishers specific to resin and ceramics were evaluated. The surface roughness of restorative materials was measured, and images of the polishers were acquired by OCT and stereomicroscope. Surface roughness was reduced in ceramic and glass-ceramic composite polished with a system specific to resin (p<0.01). Surface area variation was observed on all polishers, except for the medium-grit polisher tested in ceramic (p<0.05). Similarity between images obtained through OCT and stereomicroscopy presented a Kappa inter- and intra-observer of 0.94 and 0.96, respectively. Then, OCT was able to evaluate wear areas in spiral polishers.

AIMS: To synthesize and evaluate the antifungal activity of poly(methacrylic acid)-silver nanoparticles (PMAA-AgNPs) against nine Candida albicans isolated from clinical specimens. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of PMAA-AgNPs-fluconazole combination was analysed by checkerboard methodology. The synergistic potential of PMAA-AgNPs-fluconazole was determined by the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI). The inhibition of germ tube formation and the determination of PMAA-AgNPs cytotoxicity were also performed. All C. albicans strains were susceptible to PMAA-AgNPs and resistant to fluconazole. PMAA-AgNPs at subinhibitory concentrations restored the susceptibility of resistant C. albicans to fluconazole, whose FICI ranged from 0.3 to 0.5. The synergistic interaction of the combination was observed in eight of nine strains. The PMAA-AgNPs-fluconazole combination was also able to inhibit the germ tube formation. PMAA-AgNPs showed a dose-dependent decrease in viability for cells tested, with 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50 ) values of 6.5, 4.9 and 6.8 µg ml-1 for macrophages, fibroblasts and Vero cells, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that, in general, PMAA-AgNPs acts synergistically in combination with fluconazole, inhibiting fluconazole-resistant C. albicans strains. PMAA-AgNPs-fluconazole combination was also able to inhibit germ tube formation, an important virulence factor. Inhibitory effect of PMAA-AgNPs alone or in combination was higher in C. albicans than in mammalian cells. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: This study shows the potential of PMAA-AgNPs combined with fluconazole to inhibit fluconazole-resistant C. albicans strains.

There is already a societal awareness of the growing impact of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with nanomaterials (with at least one dimension less than 100 nm) now incorporated in items as diverse as mobile phones, clothes or dentifrices. In the healthcare area, nanoparticles of biocompatible materials have already been used for cancer treatment or bioimaging enhancement. Nanotechnology in dentistry, or nanodentistry, has already found some developments in dental nanomaterials for caries management, restorative dentistry and orthodontic adhesives. In this review, we present state-of-the-art scientific development in nanodentistry with an emphasis on two imaging techniques exploiting nanomaterials: optical coherence tomography (OCT) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Examples will be given using OCT with nanomaterials to enhance the acquired imaging, acting as optical clearing agents for OCT. A novel application of gold nanoparticles and nanorods for imaging enhancement of incipient occlusal caries using OCT will be described. Additionally, we will highlight how the OCT technique can be properly managed to provide imaging with spatial resolution down to 10's-100's nm resolution. For PAI, we will describe how new nanoparticles, namely TiN, prepared by femtosecond laser ablation, can be used in nanodentistry and will show photoacoustic microscopy and tomography images for such exogenous agents.

AIMS: During the COVID-19 pandemic the search for complementary methods to enhance manual disinfection in dental and medical practices raised relevance. We sought evidence for the addition of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) disinfection to manual cleaning protocols -and whether it improves the logarithmic (log) reduction of surface pathogen colonies. METHODS: This review was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under the number CRD420200193961. Six electronic sources were consulted looking for clinical trials performed in healthcare environments in which pathogens were quantified by colony-forming unit (CFU)-enumeration before and after interventions, all databases were last consulted on May 2021. We assessed the risk of bias using an adapted Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool (RoB 2). The certainty of the evidence was qualified according to the Classification of Recommendations, Evaluation, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: We identified 1012 records and 12 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All included studies reported enhanced disinfection in the UV-C arm; most of them reported 1-log to 2-log reduction in approximately 10 to 25 min. Only three studies reached a 5-log and 6-log reduction. When manual cleaning was performed alone, only two studies reported a 1-log reduction using a chlorine-based disinfectant. We detected a high risk of bias in 1 study. Certainty of evidence was classified as moderate and low. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence points out the effectiveness of UV-C technology in reducing manual cleaning failures, enhancing the logarithmic reduction of surface pathogen colonies. However, the safety and success of these devices will depend on several physical and biological factors. A judicious project must precede their use in clinical and medical offices under the supervision of a physicist or other trained professional.

O sucesso clínico de materiais resinosos é dependente de uma adequada polimerização. Diversos materiais fotoativados são utilizados frequentemente nas clínicas-escola de Odontologia. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o nível de conhecimento dos acadêmicos do 10º período de Odontologia do Centro Universitário Maurício de Nassau, Recife/PE,sobre fotopolimerização, por meio de questionário. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados por meio de estatísticas descritivas, teste Qui-quadrado de Pearson e teste Exato de Fischer, com nível de significância de 5% (p<0,05). Os resultados demonstram que 83,8%dos estudantesnão possuem fotopolimerizador, 72,9% não conhecem a potência do aparelho, 56,2% não sabem qual é a potência mínima ideal e apenas 8,5% sabem o nome do aparelho aferidor da irradiância / potência. Além disso, 48,5% não sabem o comprimento de onda ideal para fotoativação de resina composta e 69,2% desconhecemo tipo de aparelho que utilizam (monowaveou poliwave).Em relação ao tempo de fotopolimerização, 60,8% afirmaram utilizar20 segundos em resinas compostas convencionais e 38,5% utilizam por40 segundos em resinas compostas Bulk-fill. Embora 84,6% afirmem usar aparelhos fotopolimerizadores frequentemente, apenas 26,9% sabem a distância ideal da ponteira à restauração. Além disso, 51,5% relataram que fazem a limpeza e desinfecção com álcool 70GL e 45,4% usam barreira plástica. Nesse contexto, pode-se concluir que o nível do conhecimento dos acadêmicos em relação à fotopolimerização foi insatisfatório, exigindo uma abordagem e avaliaçãomais efetivaspara que os discentes tenham consciência da importância clínica deste procedimento e suas consequências (AU).


The clinical success of resin materials depends on adequate curing. Several light cured materials are frequently used in dental school clinics. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of students from the 10th period of Dentistry at Maurício de Nassau University Center, Recife/PE, about light curing, using a questionnaire. Data were tabulated and analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson chi-square test and Fisher exact test, at a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). The results show that 83.8% of studentsdo not have a light curing unit, 72.9% do not know the device power, 56.2% do not know the ideal minimum power and only 8.5% know the name of the device that measures the irradiance/power. Also, 48.5% do not know the ideal wavelength for light curing of composite resin and 69.2% do not know the type of device they use (monowave or polywave). Regarding the light curing time, 60.8% stated they used 20 seconds in conventional composite resins and 38.5% used 40 seconds in bulk-fill composite resins. Although 84.6% stated that they use light curing units frequently, only 26.9% know the ideal distance from the tip to the restoration. Additionally, 51.5% reported performing cleaning and disinfection with 70GL alcohol and 45.4% use a plastic barrier. In this context, it can be concluded that the knowledge of students regarding light curing was unsatisfactory, requiring a more effective approach and evaluation so that the students may be aware of the clinical importance of this procedure and its consequences (AU).

PURPOSE: This study aimed to demonstrate the presence of dental caries through a photoacoustic imaging system with visible and near-infrared wavelengths, highlighting the differences between the 2 spectral regions. The depth at which carious tissue could be detected was also verified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen permanent molars were selected and classified as being sound or having incipient or advanced caries by visual inspection, radiography, and optical coherence tomography analysis prior to photoacoustic scanning. A photoacoustic imaging system operating with a nanosecond pulsed laser as the light excitation source at either 532 nm or 1064 nm and an acoustic transducer at 5 MHz was developed, characterized, and used. En-face and lateral (depth) photoacoustic signals were detected. RESULTS: The results confirmed the potential of the photoacoustic method to detect caries. At both wavelengths, photoacoustic imaging effectively detected incipient and advanced caries. The reconstructed photoacoustic images confirmed that a higher intensity of the photoacoustic signal could be observed in regions with lesions, while sound surfaces showed much less photoacoustic signal. Photoacoustic signals at depths up to 4 mm at both 532 nm and 1064 nm were measured. CONCLUSION: The results presented here are promising and corroborate that photoacoustic imaging can be applied as a diagnostic tool in caries research. New studies should focus on developing a clinical model of photoacoustic imaging applications in dentistry, including soft tissues. The use of inexpensive light-emitting diodes together with a miniaturized detector will make photoacoustic imaging systems more flexible, user-friendly, and technologically viable.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the influence of Nd:YAG laser and aluminum oxide sandblasting on the shear bond strength (SBS) of lingual brackets and to optically analyze the behavior of the enamel morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five bovines' incisors teeth were divided into 5 groups (n = 7), according to the surface preconditioning: G1, control group; G2, Nd:YAG laser; G3, laser + aluminum oxide sandblasting (Al2O3); G4, Al2O3; and G5, Al2O3 + laser. All groups had lingual brackets bonded and shear debonded after 72 h. SBS values were analyzed, and the enamel morphology was evaluated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), before and after preconditioning surface. The optical attenuation coefficient (α) analysis was obtained from OCT images. Data analysis used the ANOVA test, followed by post hoc Tukey, Kruskal Wallis, and post hoc Dunn tests (significance of 5%). RESULTS: The SBS values presented similarly among groups, but the value of α showed statistical difference (p-value = 0.0124) between G3 and G5 with the others. Optical analyses indicated a melting on the enamel that suffered laser irradiation for G2 and G5 and crystal surface disorganization for G4. Sandblasting partially removes the melting of the laser effect (G3). CONCLUSION: The sandblasting is a dispensable step for bonding lingual brackets, and the melting of the enamel after laser irradiation does not compromise the bracket adhesive resistance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The Nd:YAG laser became an interesting tool to prevent caries and decrease prevalence of white spot lesions in orthodontic treatments, without systemic effects in patients with genetic high risks of caries.

Introduction: Ceramic veneers represent a treatment approach in aesthetic dentistry. They are indicated in cases of alterations in size, contour, form and color of the teeth. The clinical and radiographic examinations may not allow the correct identification of failures in the treatment with ceramic veneers. Objective: To report the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for the evaluation and repair of an aesthetic oral rehabilitation involving ceramic veneers. Case report: A 24-year-old female patient complained of unsatisfied color change in the ceramic veneer placed on the right maxillary central incisor. The clinical examination showed color changes between the middle and incisal thirds of mesial surface of the tooth crown. The OCT sagittal images evidenced the presence of bubbles or gaps in the adhesive interface. The treatment consisted of repair of the restoration by infiltration of a composite resin. Conclusion: The OCT was found to be valid tool to evaluate the adaptation of the ceramic veneer placed on the maxillary central incisor (AU)


Introdução: Laminados cerâmicos representam uma abordagem de tratamento em Odontologia. São indicados em casos de alterações no tamanho, contorno, forma e cor dos dentes. O exame clínico e o emprego de radiografias convencionais podem não permitir a correta identificação de falhas no tratamento com laminados cerâmicos. Objetivo:Relatamos o uso da tomografia de coerência óptica (TCO) para avaliação da adaptação e reparo de uma reabilitação oral estética com laminados cerâmicos. Relato de caso:Paciente do sexo feminino, 24 anos, queixou-se de alteração de cor em laminado cerâmica cimentado no incisivo central superior direito. O exame clínico evidenciou alterações de cor entre os terços médio e incisal da superfície mesial do dente. As imagens obtidas por TCO mostraram a presença de bolhas ou gaps na interface adesiva da região. O plano de tratamento consistiu no reparo mediante infiltração de uma resina composta no local indicado pela TCO. Conclusão: A tomografia de coerência óptica se mostrou um método auxiliar eficaz para análise da adaptação do laminado cerâmico no incisivo superior direito. (AU)

This study evaluated the effect of selective carious tissue removal on the fracture strength and failure mode of composite restorations in molars presenting only the buccal cusps. Deep cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface, and the lingual cusps were removed. Carious lesions in the middle of the pulpal wall were artificially induced with acetic acid (pH = 4.5) for 35 days. The demineralized dentin was left intact or was completely removed prior to restoration with a bulk-fill composite (n = 10). Images of the specimens were obtained by optical coherence tomography (OCT) before and after the caries induction/removal. The mechanical resistance to fracture by axial compressive loading and the failure type and extension were determined. The pulpal wall/composite interface of the fractured specimens was analyzed by OCT. The data were analyzed for significance with t-tests (α = 0.05). The deepest cavities and a more frequent occurrence of pulpal exposure were observed more often for non-selective carious tissue removal. The protocol of carious tissue removal did not affect the fracture strength (p = 0.554). An increased occurrence of catastrophic failures involving the roots was observed for non-selective carious tissue removal. Some occurrences of restoration displacement or cracks throughout the resin-dentin were observed only for the selective carious tissue approach. Selective carious tissue removal is a feasible approach to extensively damaged teeth since it reduced the occurrence of pulpal exposure and root fractures, without compromising the fracture strength.

The available methods for veneer evaluation are limited to clinical and radiographic examinations, which may not allow the appropriate identification of failure. In this report, we demonstrate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a noninvasive diagnostic and follow-up method to evaluate gingival recovery and the adhesive interface in aesthetic oral rehabilitation involving periodontal plastic surgery and ceramic laminate veneers. OCT was efficient for evaluating both soft and hard tissues, as well as the quality of the adhesive interface. In conclusion, OCT was found to be a promising approach for the professional evaluation of aesthetic oral rehabilitation, as it was capable of generating images that enabled the analysis of gingival recovery and the adhesive interface.

This paper reports on a micro-certification procedure using femtosecond laser irradiation to microscopically mark a single-crystalline gemological and natural diamond, synthetic ruby and synthetic sapphire, inscribing a QR Code on them. The QR-code was composed of a set of 25 × 25 micropoints, and the irradiation energy was optimized at 1kHz repetition rate. The code was made at a 20 µm relative depth into the gemstone surfaces by controlling the incident laser energy, that was set to 3 µJ for all the samples. Characterization by optical and electron microscopy, as well as micro-Raman hyperspectral imaging showed that the microdots have a diameter of about 14 µm perpendicular to the irradiation direction, being laterally spaced by 14 µm-18 µm applied for each sample. This work corroborates the feasibility of using ultrafast laser inscription technology to fabricate microdots with great quality on gemstone surfaces, which offers a great potential for the jewelry industry to safely micro-encrypt gemological certifications. The compositional and morphological characterization of the modified surface was carried by micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Objective: To evaluate the use of nanosilver fluoride in the enamel remineralization process through optical coherence tomography. Material and Methods: All samples were submitted to demineralization process by pH cycling during 14 days and randomly distributed into three groups (n = 11): Nanosilver Fluoride (NSF), Sodium fluoride (NaF), and negative control. Optical coherence tomography images were acquired at three different moments: initial stage (T0), post caries formation (T1), and post pH cycling (T2). The integrity of the enamel surface and the measurement of the volume loss for the tissue after pH cycling in comparison to initial images were obtained from optical coherence tomography images. Results: After analyzing the exponential decay of A-scans from each group, it was possible to identify differences in light propagation among samples. In T1 it is not possible to visualize the dentin-enamel junction, probably due to the higher back scattering of the demineralized enamel, which does not allow light to reach the dentin. The decay curves obtained from NaF and nanosilver fluoride groups showed similar behavior, while the negative group showed lower extinction coefficient. Conclusion: Nanosilver fluoride showed the best effect against caries compared to conventional fluoride treatments.

OBJECTIVES: To comparein vitro differences in the apical filling regarding working length (WL) change and presence of voids and to validate optical coherence tomography (OCT) in comparison with computerized microtomography (µCT) for the detection of failures in the apical filling. METHODS: Forty-five uniradicular teeth with round canals, divided into groups (n = 15) following the obturation protocols: LC (lateral condensation), TMC (thermomechanical compaction) and SC (single cone). Samples were scanned using µCT (parameters: 80 kV, 222 µA, and resolution of 11 µm), OCT (parameters: SSOCT, 1300 nm and axial resolution of 12 µm), and periapical digital radiography. The images were analyzsed by two blind and calibrated observers using ImageJ software to measure the boundary of the obturation WL and voids presence. Categorical and metric data were submitted to inferential analysis, and the validity of the OCT as a diagnostic test was assessed with performance and reliability tests. RESULTS: The WL average remained constant for all obturation techniques and image methods. OCT showed adequate sensitivity and specificity to detect voids in the WL of apical obturations in vitro in comparison with µCT. Both image methods found a higher number of voids for LC technique (µCT p = 0.011/OCT p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: OCT can be used in apical obturation voids assessment and the LC technique revealed more voids with larger dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of 2 optical coherence tomographic (OCT) systems to detect apical dentinal microcracks. METHODS: Twenty extracted human single-rooted mandibular incisors were selected. After root canal preparation with an R40 Reciproc file (VDW, Munich, Germany), the specimens presenting apical microcracks were identified using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) scanning as the gold standard. Then, the apical portions of the roots were imaged with spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) and swept-source OCT systems, and the resulting images were blindly evaluated by 3 independent examiners to detect microcracks. The diagnostic performance of each OCT device was calculated, and statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: Based on the micro-CT images, 12 (60%) roots presented dentinal microcracks in the apical region. The images generated by the OCT systems were able to show microcrack lines at the same location as the corresponding micro-CT cross sections. Although the diagnostic performance of the SD-OCT device was superior, there were no statistically significant differences between the 2 OCT devices (P > .05). Interexaminer agreement was substantial to almost perfect for the SD-OCT system and moderate to almost perfect for the swept-source OCT system, whereas intraexaminer agreement was substantial to almost perfect for both OCT devices. CONCLUSIONS: The detection ability verified for both OCT systems renders them promising tools for the diagnosis of apical microcracks.

There has been increasing interest on the development of clinically acceptable, more sensitive and specific methods for non-invasive diagnosis in Periodontics. In this pilot study, the performance of an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system in imaging periodontal structures in humans was evaluated. Gingival sulcus depth measurements were obtained and compared with traditional probes. In total, 445 sites of 23 periodontally healthy individuals were measured by 3 instruments: North Carolina manual probe, Florida automated probe and OCT at 1325 nm. To obtain quantitative measurements from OCT images, the gingival refractive index was also determined. Discomfort/pain perception and the duration of examinations were compared among the instruments. The analysis of OCT images allowed the identification of relevant anatomic dental and periodontal regions. The average sulcus depth measured by OCT, 0.85 ± 0.27 mm and 0.87 ± 0.28 mm, was lower than the values obtained by manual and automated probing. Discomfort/pain were prevalent for traditional probes, which are invasive methods, than for the non-invasive OCT technique. OCT has the potential to be a reliable tool for in vivo periodontal tissues evaluation and for reproducible sulcus depth measurements in healthy sites. Further technological advances are required to reduce the procedure time and promote evaluation of posterior oral regions.
