RESUMO

Karyotyping is one among the culling parameter used for taking up culling decisions. Cytogenetic screening of breeding bulls has been recommended to screen for chromosomal abnormalities before semen production in artificial insemination. The chromosomal analysis of a Holstein Friesian crossbred bull revealed the presence of acrocentric Y-chromosome, which was further confirmed by CBG banding. The shape of the Y-chromosome determining that male line used for crossbreeding was from indigenous origin. Karyotyping is a best and reliable technique for the identification of crossbred calves born to the indigenous bulls.

RESUMO

Squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck region account for more than 25 % of male and more than 10 % of female cancers in India (1). Head and neck cancer treatment includes a multidisciplinary approach involving all specialties. Concurrent chemo-radiation is the standard of care in most of the subsites (2). Inspite of the multi-disciplinary approach, a plateau has been reached in terms of results with 5 year survival of locally advanced disease of around 30 % (3). In order to improve outcomes, there has been considerable interest in molecular profiling of head and neck cancers 4-10. However there is still significant paucity in terms of Indian data, hence the need for the study. The objectives are to assess the HPV-p16, EGFR and p53 status, to correlate HPV-p16, EGFR and p53 status with the response rates, to correlate HPV-p16,EGFR and p53 status with other factors like age, sex, tobacco use. Twenty five consecutive cases of histopathologically proven head and neck cancers were accrued. All patients were treated with external radiation to a dose of 66Gy in 33 fractions along with concurrent weekly cisplatin chemotherapy at a dose of 40mg/sqm. HPV-p16, EGFR and p53 mutation analysis was done on paraffin embedded histopathological blocks. PCR technique used for HPV-p16, EGFR and p53 status detection. Response assessment was done based on RECIST criteria. Correlation of HPV, EGFR and p53 status on response was done. The EGFR positivity rate was 84 %, the p53 positivity rate was 76 % and the HPV p-16 positivity rate was 28 %. Out of 25 patients, 13(52%) had complete response, 7(28 %) had partial response, 3(12 %) had stable disease and 2(8 %) had progressive disease. On correlation of molecular profile with response, there was no statistical significance between EGFR status and response (p 0.5) or HPV-p16 and response (p 0.8). However, p53 positivity was approaching significance with respect to good response (p 0.07).

RESUMO

An isolated fallopian tube torsion is a rare, often difficult to diagnose, but significant cause of acute lower abdominal pain in women of the reproductive age group. It is rare in the perimenopausal age group. We are presenting a literature review and the case of a 47 years old woman who presented with a sudden onset of acute lower abdominal pain . Her clinical examination revealed an 8x8 cm, tender, cystic mass in the left lower quadrant, with positive cervical movement tenderness. MRI revealed a gross hydrosalpinx with a small left ovarian cyst. With a diagnosis of left adnexal torsion, an emergency laparotomy was performed, which revealed an isolated left fallopian tube torsion which necessitated a left salpingo-oophorectomy. A tubal torsion should be suspected in females with acute lower abdominal pain, of any age group, especially in those with predisposing factors like pelvic infections, tumours and surgeries which include tubal ligation. Laparoscopy is the preferred modality for the diagnosis and treatment of a tubal torsion.

RESUMO

The bone marrow is a complex tissue containing stem cells with hematopoietic properties. These bone-marrow mesenchymal stem cells have been identified as the source of multipotent stem cells. Bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are also referred to as stromal progenitor cells which are self-renewing and expandable stem cells used for regenerative studies. Basically, the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) has the unique property of plasticity and adherence. In this study we discuss the bone-marrow-MSC isolation and their cultural characterization based on plasticity, proliferation, and CD44 cell surface marker identification in Albino Rats and Indian Chicken. The results of comparative study in the two different species indicate that there are differences in the cell morphology and proliferation rate of MSC. This article provides general understanding of the cellular morphological difference of stem cells in the lower animal models, and paves the way for future research work into the selection of species (AU)

RESUMO

Solitary Fibrous Tumour (SFT) is an unusual spindle cell tumour that usually occurs in the pleura, but has recently also been reported to be extra-pleural in origin. A renal presentation is very rare. Upto 90% of the tumours have benign characteristics. It is difficult to differentiate it from renal cell carcinoma by using imaging techniques. A definitive diagnosis can be made by doing a detailed pathological examination, which includes immunohistochemistry. We are reporting a case of a large solitary fibrous tumour of the kidney which here occurred in a 70-years-old male. Histological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis, by revealing strongly positive reactions of the neoplastic cells for CD34, bcl-2, vimentin and negativity for Epithelial Membrane Antigen (EMA), Smooth Muscle Actin (SMA), S-100 protein and Ki-67. The patient suffered a cardiac arrest and died on the seventh day after his surgery.

RESUMO

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML-M3) is associated with the translocation t(15;17)(q22;q12-21) which disrupts the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) gene on chromosome 17 and the PML gene on chromosome 15. We report a two-year-old patient with AML-M3 without the usual translocation t(15;17). Cytogenetic studies demonstrated normal appearance of chromosome 15 while the abnormal 17 homologue was apparently a derivative 17, der(17)(17qter-cen-q21:), the rearrangement distinctly shows deletion at 17q21 band and the morphology corresponding to an iso chromosome i(17q-). This case report is a rare cytogenetic presentation of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML).

RESUMO

Tuberculosis of the skeletal muscle is very rare which is often missed in the early stages. This leads to delay in treatment resulting in irreversible limb deformity and loss of function. The authors describe a case of healthy child with an intramuscular cystic swelling above the elbow joint. The pus showing acid fast bacilli morphologically resembling Mycobacterium tuberculosis was also isolated in culture. Following the diagnosis and confirmation, the child was treated successfully with anti tubercular drugs.
