Implemented for decades as part of the 'best management practices (BMPs)' for controlling urban runoff impacts on receiving waters, stormwater management ponds (SMPs) have been increasingly viewed as potential habitats for urban wildlife. However, since SMPs are subject to a lot of environmental constraints, research toward assessing their ecological quality and their actual benefits as habitats for biota is needed. In this study, the sediment toxicity of eight SMPs located in Southern Ontario, Canada was assessed using the sediment quality triad (SQT) approach. Sediment samples were collected for chemical, ecotoxicological and biological analyses. An oligochaete-based index approach (Oligochaete Index of Lake Bioindication and percentage of pollution-sensitive species) was used as the biological endpoint and integrated into a weight-of-evidence approach to assessing the general sediment quality of the ponds. Our results showed that (i) heavy metals in the sediment and (ii) chloride concentrations in the sediment interstitial water caused detrimental effects on the ecological quality of the sediments in the ponds studied. The oligochaete indices applied in this study showed value as biological endpoints to be integrated into the SQT and used for setting up sediment ecological quality goals.

To determine whether natural recovery was occurring in a depositional area of the St. Marys River (Ontario, Canada) known as East Bellevue Marine Park (EBMP), sediment was collected from two depth ranges, 0-5 cm and 0-10 cm, and subjected to a series of laboratory toxicity tests and chemical analysis. Toxicological responses (survival, growth, reproduction, development) of four benthic invertebrates and the fathead minnow were compared at test vs. reference sites using univariate and multivariate (ordination) techniques. Temporal trends in sediment chemistry and invertebrate toxicity were examined with time series data from 2008 through to 2018. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; ≤ 37 mg/kg) and petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs; ≤ 6266 mg/kg) were elevated in EBMP compared to reference sites (PAHs, ≤ 1.6 mg/kg; PHCs ≤ 180 mg/kg). Comparatively, the 0-5 cm sediment layer had lower concentrations of all contaminants than the 0-10 cm layer at three of four test sites. Over time, contaminant concentrations have mostly remained stable or have decreased. There were no significant differences in survival, growth, or development of the larval fish in EBMP compared to the upstream reference sites, and no differences between sampling depths. However, most EBMP sediments were toxic to invertebrates, driven by reduced reproduction by the worm Tubifex and reduced survival by the amphipod Hyalella. Among habitat variables, a combination of different classes of compounds based on ordination scores (PHCs, oil and grease, metals) was most strongly correlated to toxicological response. There was little to no difference in toxicity between sampling depths based on integrated endpoint response; however, individual endpoints showed mostly greater toxicity from exposure to the 0-10 cm layer. Over time, toxicity has mostly remained stable or showed improvement. These results provided some positive indications that gradual natural recovery is occurring in EBMP.

The objective of this study was to advance analytical methods for detecting oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) seepage from mining containments and discriminating any such seepage from the natural bitumen background in groundwaters influenced by the Alberta McMurray formation. Improved sampling methods and quantitative analyses of two groups of monoaromatic acids were employed to analyze OSPW and bitumen-affected natural background groundwaters for source discrimination. Both groups of monoaromatic acids showed significant enrichment in OSPW, while ratios of O2/O4 containing heteroatomic ion classes of acid extractable organics (AEOs) did not exhibit diagnostic differences. Evaluating the monoaromatic acids to track a known plume of OSPW-affected groundwater confirmed their diagnostic abilities. A secondary objective was to assess anthropogenically derived artificial sweeteners and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as potential tracers for OSPW. Despite the discovery of acesulfame and PFAS in most OSPW samples, trace levels in groundwaters influenced by general anthropogenic activities preclude them as individual robust tracers. However, their inclusion with the other metrics employed in this study served to augment the tiered, weight of evidence methodology developed. This methodology was then used to confirm earlier findings of OSPW migrations into groundwater reaching the Athabasca River system adjacent to the reclaimed pond at Tar Island Dyke.

In situ exposures with Hyalella azteca were used to assess impacts of current-use pesticides in Southern Ontario, Canada. Exposures were conducted over 2 growing seasons within areas of high pesticide use: 1 site on Prudhomme Creek and 3 sites on Twenty Mile Creek. Three sites on Spencer Creek, an area of low pesticide use, were added in the second season. Surface water samples were collected every 2 wk to 3 wk and analyzed for a suite of pesticides. Hyalella were exposed in situ for 1 wk every 4 wk to 6 wk, and survival and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were measured. Pesticides in surface waters reflected seasonal use patterns: lower concentrations in spring and fall and higher concentrations during summer months. Organophosphate insecticides (chlorpyrifos, azinphos methyl, diazinon) and acid herbicides (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [2,4-D], mecoprop) were routinely detected in Prudhomme Creek, whereas neutral herbicides (atrazine, metolachlor) dominated the pesticide signature of Twenty Mile Creek. Spencer Creek contained fewer pesticides, which were measured at lower concentrations. In situ effects also followed seasonal patterns: higher survival and AChE activity in spring and fall, and lower survival and AChE activity during summer months. The highest toxicity was observed at Prudhomme Creek and was primarily associated with organophosphates. The present study demonstrated that current-use pesticides in Southern Ontario were linked to in situ effects and identified sites of concern requiring further investigation.

Sediments in Lyons Creek East (Welland, Ontario), a tributary of the Niagara River and part of the Niagara River Area of Concern, which exceed screening-level environmental-quality criteria for multiple contaminants, were assessed for biological impacts using information from multiple lines of evidence. An initial chemical survey indicated the primary contaminants of concern to be polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), zinc, and p,p'-DDE due to frequent exceedences of sediment guidelines. A subsequent study focused on the chemical composition of sediment, status of benthic invertebrate communities, contaminant bioaccumulation in resident benthos, and sediment toxicity to laboratory-exposed organisms. Chemical and biological conditions in the creek were compared with those in reference creeks using both multivariate (cluster analysis and ordination) and univariate (regression) techniques. Sediment PCBs (≤ 19 µg/g), PAHs (≤ 63 µg/g), and Zn (≤ 7969 µg/g) were increased above the sediment-quality guidelines along most of the creek; however, the upper 1.5 km portion of the creek was the most highly contaminated and therefore the main focus for biological study. Although severe toxicity was evident at several locations in the upper creek, resident benthic communities were minimally affected by sediment contamination. The cause of toxicity was likely related to a combination of stressors, including PCBs, PAHs, and metals. Due to its biomagnifiable nature, bioaccumulation focused on PCBs; concentrations in resident macroinvertebrates were ≤ 2 orders of magnitude greater than those found in reference creeks and were above tissue residue guidelines, indicating a potential risk for consumers of benthos. This risk was not limited to the upper 1.5 km where other effects were seen.

Stormwater ponds have been widely used to control increased surface runoff resulting from urbanization, and to enhance runoff quality. As receiving waters, they are impacted by intermittent stormwater pollution while also serving as newly created aquatic habitats, which partly offset changes of aquatic ecosystems and their biodiversity by urbanization. Thus, determining ecological risks in stormwater ponds is important for the preservation and rehabilitation of biodiversity in urban areas. Limitations of the conventional toxicity assessment techniques in stormwater ponds have led us to use the sediment quality triad approach with the specific analyses of oligochaetes. The latter analyses build on the earlier work by the Cemagref (Lyon, France) and use the oligochaetes as bioindicators of the sediment quality. This integrative approach was tested at eight sites in the Terraview-Willowfield stormwater facility in Toronto, Ontario, in all four seasons (summer 2008-spring 2009). The facility receives direct runoff from the MacDonald-Cartier freeway with a traffic intensity of 340,000 vehicles/d. Sediment chemistry results indicate that several heavy metals and PAH compounds exceeded the Ontario sediment quality guidelines in the facility. Regardless of the season, laboratory bioassays revealed a strong spatial variation in sediment toxicity along the flow path from the inlet to the outlet, agreeing with decreasing concentrations of contaminants in sediment, especially of heavy metals. However, in situ assessments of the benthic macroinvertebrate community structure and in particular of the oligochaete community revealed an overriding influence of seasonally varying toxicity. This seasonal pattern was described as high toxicity in spring and recovery in fall and corresponded to the influx and flushing-out of road salts and of several heavy metals within the facility.

The quality of aquatic habitat in a stormwater management facility located in Toronto, Ontario, was assessed by examining ecotoxicological responses of benthic invertebrates exposed to sediment and water from this system. Besides residential stormwater, the facility receives highway runoff contaminated with trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and road salt. The combined flow passes through two extended detention ponds (in series) and a vegetated outlet channel. Toxicity of surficial sediment collected from 14 longitudinally arrayed locations was assessed based on 10 acute and chronic endpoints from laboratory tests with four benthic organisms. Greatest overall toxicity was observed in sediment from sites in the upstream pond, where mortality to amphipods and mayflies reached up to 100%. Downstream pond sediment was less toxic on average than the upstream pond sediment, but not the outlet channel sediment where untreated stormwater discharges provided additional sources of contamination. Macroinvertebrate communities in sediment cores were depauperate and dominated by oligochaetes and chironomids, with minimum densities and diversity at the deeper central pond sites. While sediment toxicity was associated with high concentrations of trace metals and high-molecular weight PAHs, benthic community impoverishment appeared related to high water column salinity.

A sediment quality index (SQI) was developed using an equation incorporating three elements; scope--the % of variables that did not meet guidelines; area frequency--the % of failed tests divided by the total number of tests in a group of sites; and amplitude - the magnitude by which failed variables exceeded guidelines. The SQI calculation produces a numerical score with a maximum value of 100 representing the highest sediment quality. A modified SQI was also developed using only the scope and amplitude elements, which computed a score per site with no grouping. The SQI was applied to assessment of sediment quality in Lakes Erie and Ontario using Canadian Federal and Ontario Provincial guidelines for 34 compounds, Spatial trends in sediment quality in both lakes reflected overall trends for most individual contaminant classes, including mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls. In Lake Erie, there was a trend toward lower SQI values from the eastern basin to the western basin, and from the northern area to the southern area of the central basin. Sediment quality in the eastern basin and the northern area of the central basin was classified as excellent (>95); sediments in other areas of Lake Erie ranged from fair to good. In Lake Ontario, the poorest sediment quality was associated with the three major depositional basins; sediment quality among the three basins was quite consistent. The SQI values based on all three elements (scope, frequency and amplitude) for the Niagara basin. Mississauga Basin and Rochester Basin were 67 (fair), 65 (fair) and 70 (fair), respectively. Comparison of SQI values for all lower lake basins showed generally poorer sediment quality in Lake Ontario, compared to Lake Erie.
