Magnusiomyces capitatus (M. capitatus) is an emerging opportunistic yeast in the Mediterranean region typically isolated from immunocompromised patients, usually affected by blood malignancies. We reported a rare case of M. capitatus infection, isolated from a drainage fluid in a patient affected by lung cancer recovered in the University Hospital of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", Naples, Italy. The isolate was identified by phenotypic methods, i.e., Gram and Lactophenol cotton blue (LCB) staining, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. We identified M. capitatus on the third day from Sabouraud Dextrose Agar supplemented with chloramphenicol and gentamicin. Antifungal susceptibility test revealed that 5-fluorocytosine was the most active drug against M. capitatus, followed by itraconazole and voriconazole, micafungin, amphotericin B and fluconazole, posaconazole, anidulafungin, and caspofungin. Our data showed the importance of an early cultural and fast microbiology diagnosis based on the characteristic morphologic features observed in Gram-stained smears of blood culture positive bottles, and the validation via MALDI-TOF MS. This dual approach has significant impact in the clinical management of infectious diseases and antibiotic stewardship, by integrating sample processing, fluid handling, and detection for rapid bacterial diagnosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the deadliest infectious disorders in the world. To effectively TB manage, an essential step is to gain insight into the lineage of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and the distribution of drug resistance. Although the Campania region is declared a cluster area for the infection, to contribute to the effort to understand TB evolution and transmission, still poorly known, we have generated a dataset of 159 genomes of MTB strains, from Campania region collected during 2018-2021, obtained from the analysis of whole genome sequence. The results show that the most frequent MTB lineage is the 4 according for 129 strains (81.11%). Regarding drug resistance, 139 strains (87.4%) were classified as multi susceptible, while the remaining 20 (12.58%) showed drug resistance. Among the drug-resistance strains, 8 were isoniazid-resistant MTB, 4 multidrug-resistant MTB, while only one was classified as pre-extensively drug-resistant MTB. This dataset expands the existing available knowledge on drug resistance and evolution of MTB, contributing to further TB-related genomics studies to improve the management of this disease.

In this paper, we present the preparation of few-layer MoS2 films on single-crystal sapphire, as well as on heteroepitaxial GaN templates on sapphire substrates, using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Detailed structural and chemical characterization of the films were performed using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction measurements, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. According to X-ray diffraction studies, the films exhibit epitaxial growth, indicating a good in-plane alignment. Furthermore, the films demonstrate uniform thickness on large areas, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The lateral electrical current transport of the MoS2 grown on sapphire was investigated by temperature (T)-dependent sheet resistance and Hall effect measurements, showing a high n-type doping of the semiconducting films (ns from ~1 × 1013 to ~3.4 × 1013 cm-2 from T = 300 K to 500 K), with a donor ionization energy of Ei = 93 ± 8 meV and a mobility decreasing with T. Finally, the vertical current injection across the MoS2/GaN heterojunction was investigated by means of conductive atomic force microscopy, showing the rectifying behavior of the I-V characteristics with a Schottky barrier height of ϕB ≈ 0.36 eV. The obtained results pave the way for the scalable application of PLD-grown MoS2 on GaN in electronics/optoelectronics.

Staphylococci, including Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, are important human pathogens associated with potentially life-threatening infections. Their great biofilm-producing ability and the development of resistance mechanisms often account for therapeutic failure. Hence, the scientific community has devoted intensive efforts to the development of antimicrobial compounds active against both planktonic and sessile bacterial populations. Contextually, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are natural peptides produced by the innate immunity of every organism, representing a potential new therapeutic solution against human microbial pathogens. Our work focused on the in vitro activity of Oreoch-1, an AMP from the gills of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), against standard and clinical S. aureus and S. epidermidis strains. Firstly, the cytotoxicity profile of Oreoch-1 was determined in human colon carcinoma cells. Secondly, its antibacterial spectrum was explored against staphylococcal strains to set up the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Our results highlighted an antibacterial activity in the range 6.25-25 µM, with a general bacteriostatic effect. Therefore, the biofilm-inhibitory property was assessed against S. aureus ATCC 25923 and S. epidermidis ATCC 35984, indicating a significant reduction in S. aureus biomass at sub-MIC concentrations. Overall, our study indicates Oreoch-1 as a promising new therapeutic weapon against staphylococcal infections.

Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors with Al2O3 as a gate insulator are fabricated on cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC). Al2O3 is deposited both by thermal and plasma-enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) on a thermally grown 5 nm SiO2 interlayer to improve the ALD nucleation and guarantee a better band offset with the SiC. The deposited Al2O3/SiO2 stacks show lower negative shifts of the flat band voltage VFB (in the range of about -3 V) compared with the conventional single SiO2 layer (in the range of -9 V). This lower negative shift is due to the combined effect of the Al2O3 higher permittivity (ε = 8) and to the reduced amount of carbon defects generated during the short thermal oxidation process for the thin SiO2. Moreover, the comparison between thermal and plasma-enhanced ALD suggests that this latter approach produces Al2O3 layers possessing better insulating behavior in terms of distribution of the leakage current breakdown. In fact, despite both possessing a breakdown voltage of 26 V, the T-ALD Al2O3 sample is characterised by a higher current density starting from 15 V. This can be attributable to the slightly inferior quality (in terms of density and defects) of Al2O3 obtained by the thermal approach and, which also explains its non-uniform dC/dV distribution arising by SCM maps.

CONTEXT: Prognosis is excellent for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasia with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFT-P), and follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) but is poor for poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC). Among PTCs, the prognosis is more favorable for follicular (FV-PTC) and classic (CV-PTC) than for tall cell (TCV-PTC), and solid (SV-PTC) variants. OBJECTIVE: To associate histotypes and variants of thyroid carcinoma with ultrasound and cytological features. METHODS: Histology of 1018 benign tumors and 514 PTC (249 CV, 167 FV, 49 TC, 34 SV, and 15 other variants), 52 NIFT-P, 50 FTC, 11 PDTC, and 3 ATC was correlated with fine-needle aspiration biopsy categories (Italian classification: TIR1, TIR2, TIR3A, TIR3B, TIR4, and TIR5) and ultrasound features at the Endocrinology Unit, University Hospital of Pisa. In total, 1117 patients with thyroid nodule(s) who underwent thyroidectomy were included. RESULTS: Of PTC, 36.3% had indeterminate cytology (TIR3A or TIR3B), 56.6% were suspicious for malignancy or malignant (TIR4 or TIR5); 84.0% FTC and 69.3% NIFT-P were TIR3A or TIR3B; 72.5% FV-PTC and 73.6% SV-PTC were TIR3A or TIR3B; 79.9% CV-PTC and 95.9% TCV-PTC were TIR4 or TIR5. The association of a hypoechoic pattern, irregular margins, and no microcalcifications was more frequent in TCV-PTC than in CV-PTC (P = .02, positive predictive value = 38.9%; negative predictive value = 85.5%). CONCLUSION: At cytology, most FTC, NIFT-P, FV-PTC, and SV-PTC were indeterminate, most CV-PTC and TCV-PTC were suspicious for malignancy or malignant. Ultrasound can be helpful in ruling out TCV-PTC.

In the present work, oregano essential oils (OEOs) were applied to process the fresh ovine cheese "Tuma" obtained by pressed cheese technology. Cheese making trials were performed under industrial conditions using ewe's pasteurized milk and two strains of Lactococcus lactis (NT1 and NT4) as fermenting agents. Two experimental cheese products (ECP) were obtained through the addition of 100 (ECP100) and 200 (ECP200) µL/L of OEO to milk, while the control cheese product (CCP) was OEO-free. Both Lc. lactis strains showed in vitro and in vivo ability to grow in the presence of OEOs and to dominate over indigenous milk lactic acid bacteria (LAB) resistant to pasteurization. In the presence of OEOs, the most abundant compound found in cheese was carvacrol, constituting more than 65% of the volatile fraction in both experimental products. The addition of OEOs did not influence ash, fat, or protein content, but it increased by 43% the antioxidant capacity of the experimental cheeses. ECP100 cheeses showed the best appreciation scores by the sensory panel. In order to investigate the ability OEOs to be used as a natural preservative, a test of artificial contamination was carried out, and the results showed a significant reduction of the main dairy pathogens in OEO-added cheeses.

Oncologic emergencies are a wide spectrum of oncologic conditions caused directly by malignancies or their treatment. Oncologic emergencies may be classified according to the underlying physiopathology in metabolic, hematologic, and structural conditions. In the latter, radiologists have a pivotal role, through an accurate diagnosis useful to provide optimal patient care. Structural conditions may involve the central nervous system, thorax, or abdomen, and emergency radiologists have to know the characteristics imaging findings of each one of them. The number of oncologic emergencies is growing due to the increased incidence of malignancies in the general population and also to the improved survival of these patients thanks to the advances in cancer treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) could be a solution to assist emergency radiologists with this rapidly increasing workload. To our knowledge, AI applications in the setting of the oncologic emergency are mostly underexplored, probably due to the relatively low number of oncologic emergencies and the difficulty in training algorithms. However, cancer emergencies are defined by the cause and not by a specific pattern of radiological symptoms and signs. Therefore, it can be expected that AI algorithms developed for the detection of these emergencies in the non-oncological field can be transferred to the clinical setting of oncologic emergency. In this review, a craniocaudal approach was followed and central nervous system, thoracic, and abdominal oncologic emergencies have been addressed regarding the AI applications reported in literature. Among the central nervous system emergencies, AI applications have been reported for brain herniation and spinal cord compression. In the thoracic district the addressed emergencies were pulmonary embolism, cardiac tamponade and pneumothorax. Pneumothorax was the most frequently described application for AI, to improve sensibility and to reduce the time-to-diagnosis. Finally, regarding abdominal emergencies, AI applications for abdominal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation, and intestinal intussusception have been described.

Among conductive polymers, poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) has been widely used as an electrode material for supercapacitors, solar cells, sensors, etc. Although PEDOT:PSS-based thin films have acceptable properties such as good capacitive and electrical behaviour and biocompatibility, there are still several challenges to be overcome in their use as an electrode material for supercapacitors. For this reason, the aim of this work is to fabricate and characterise ternary nanocomposites based on PEDOT:PSS and graphene oxide (GO), blended with green additives (glucose (G) or ascorbic acid (AA)), which have the benefits of being environmentally friendly, economical, and easy to use. The GO reduction process was first accurately investigated and demonstrated by UV-Vis and XRD measurements. Three-component inks have been developed, and their morphological, rheological, and surface tension properties were evaluated, showing their printability by means of Aerosol Jet® Printing (AJ®P), an innovative direct writing technique belonging to the Additive Manufacturing (AM) for printed electronics applications. Thin films of the ternary nanocomposites were produced by drop casting and spin coating techniques, and their capacitive behaviour and chemical structures were evaluated through Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) tests and FT-IR analyses. CV tests show an increment in the specific capacitance of AAGO-PEDOT up to 31.4 F/g and excellent overtime stability compared with pristine PEDOT:PSS, suggesting that this ink can be used to fabricate supercapacitors in printed (bio)-electronics. The inks were finally printed by AJ®P as thin films (10 layers, 8 × 8 mm) and chemically analysed by FT-IR, demonstrating that all components of the formulation were successfully aerosolised and deposited on the substrate.

Background: The World Health Organization identified alcohol and tobacco consumption as the risk factors with a greater attributable burden and number of deaths related to non-communicable diseases. A promising technique aimed to modify behavioral risk factors by redesigning the elements influencing the choice of people is nudging. Methodology: A scoping review of the literature was performed to map the literature evidence investigating the use of nudging for tobacco and alcohol consumption prevention and/or control in adults. Results: A total of 20 studies were included. The identified nudging categories were increasing salience of information or incentives (IS), default choices (DF), and providing feedback (PF). Almost three-quarters of the studies implementing IS and half of those implementing PF reported a success. Three-quarters of the studies using IS in conjunction with other interventions reported a success whereas more than half of the those with IS alone reported a success. The PF strategy performed better in multi-component interventions targeting alcohol consumption. Only one DF mono-component study addressing alcohol consumption reported a success. Conclusions: To achieve a higher impact, nudging should be integrated into comprehensive prevention policy frameworks, with dedicated education sessions for health professionals. In conclusion, nudge strategies for tobacco and alcohol consumption prevention in adults show promising results. Further research is needed to investigate the use of nudge strategies in socio-economically diverse groups and in young populations.

The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and epidemiology distribution of K. pneumoniae isolated at University Hospital of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli," including the susceptibility evolution profile. Data on resistant phenotype strains, such as extended-spectrum-ß-lactamase (ESBL) producers and carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRE) isolates, were also reported. K. pneumoniae strains were collected at the Complex Operative Unit (UOC) of Virology and Microbiology from different colonization and infection sites from January 2016 to December 2020. The highest rates of isolation were in urinary samples and in respiratory and wound swabs. Antibiotics susceptibility patterns showed more than 50% of the isolates resistant to cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones and penicillin. On the other hand, from 20% to 40% of K. pneumoniae strains were resistant to carbapenems and aminoglycosides. Based on our analysis, fosfomycin, ceftazidime/avibactam and ceftolozane/tazobactam are still therapeutic alternatives. Data analysis on carbapenem class evolution in 2016-2020 showed a significant increase in resistance rates (p<0.05). Increased rates in CRE and ESBL producing K. pneumoniae since 2017 were reported. Providing information on clinical characteristics and epidemiology data on contemporary K. pneumoniae evolution could help mitigate the spread of these isolates in our hospital and avert the endemic levels that have been observed in Southern Italy and in other European countries.

Copper oxide thin films have been successfully synthesized through a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) approach starting from the copper bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate), Cu(tmhd)2, complex. Operative conditions of fabrication strongly affect both the composition and morphologies of the copper oxide thin films. The deposition temperature has been accurately monitored in order to stabilize and to produce, selectively and reproducibly, the two phases of cuprite Cu2O and/or tenorite CuO. The present approach has the advantages of being industrially appealing, reliable, and fast for the production of thin films over large areas with fine control of both composition and surface uniformity. Moreover, the methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) active layer has been successfully deposited on the ITO/Cu2O substrate by the Low Vacuum Proximity Space Effusion (LV-PSE) technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses have been used to characterize the deposited films. The optical band gap (Eg), ranging from 1.99 to 2.41 eV, has been determined through UV-vis analysis, while the electrical measurements allowed to establish the p-type conductivity behavior of the deposited Cu2O thin films with resistivities from 31 to 83 Ω cm and carrier concentration in the order of 1.5-2.8 × 1016 cm-3. These results pave the way for potential applications of the present system as a hole transporting layer combined with a perovskite active layer in emergent solar cell technologies.

The continuous and rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need to seek new therapeutic and prophylactic treatments. Peptide inhibitors are a valid alternative approach for the treatment of emerging viral infections, mainly due to their low toxicity and high efficiency. Recently, two small nucleotide signatures were identified in the genome of some members of the Coronaviridae family and many other human pathogens. In this study, we investigated whether the corresponding amino acid sequences of such nucleotide sequences could have effects on the viral infection of two representative human coronaviruses: HCoV-OC43 and SARS-CoV-2. Our results showed that the synthetic peptides analyzed inhibit the infection of both coronaviruses in a dose-dependent manner by binding the RBD of the Spike protein, as suggested by molecular docking and validated by biochemical studies. The peptides tested do not provide toxicity on cultured cells or human erythrocytes and are resistant to human serum proteases, indicating that they may be very promising antiviral peptides.

Abstract Introduction Transoral laser microsurgery represents the treatment of choice for early glottic cancer. Its use and effectiveness are mainly related to laryngeal exposure and deep extension of tumor. Histopathologic assessment of surgical margin presents a main issue about transoral laser microsurgery and complete oncological excision. Objective The aim was to analyze the impact of revision surgery on organ preservation and local disease control in patients with early glottic cancer treated by transoral laser microsurgery. Methods We carried out a retrospective study on a cohort of 153 patients with early glottic cancer (Tis, T1, T2) treated by transoral laser microsurgery. Resection margins were classified as follows: "free" if macroscopic margin-tumor distance was at least 2 mm, as "close" if it was less than 2 mm and "positive" if the margin was involved by carcinoma. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with free resection margins (Group A) and patients with positive, close or not-evaluable resection margins (Group B). Group A (36) underwent periodic followup. Group B (117) underwent a second look laser CO2 2 months after surgery. Fifteen patients of Group A with suspected persistence of carcinoma during followup underwent a second laser resection after a time interval of 4-8 months after first surgery. Overall survival, disease-free survival, disease-specific survival, ultimate local control with laser alone and organ preservation rates were estimated. Results Five-year overall survival rate and 5-year disease-specific survival were 100% in both groups. The five-year laryngeal preservation rate was 100% in Group A and 95.2% in Group B. Five-year disease-free survival was 92.15% and 5-year ultimate local control with laser alone in 92.15% of patients. Conclusion This study has demonstrated that revision Transoral Laser Microsurgery is able to confirm the oncological radicality in most cases, even in the case of positive, close or non-evaluable margins. Considering our results, according to our experience, the second look with CO2 laser is a therapeutic strategy to consider, even in the case of close or non-evaluable as well as positive margins.


Resumo Introdução A microcirurgia transoral a laser representa o tratamento de escolha para o câncer glótico inicial. Seu uso e sua eficácia estão relacionados principalmente à exposição laríngea e à profundidade da extensão do tumor. A avaliação histopatológica da margem cirúrgica representa uma das principais questões sobre a microcirurgia a laser transoral e excisão oncológica completa. Objetivo Analisar o impacto da cirurgia de revisão na preservação de órgãos e controle local da doença em pacientes com câncer glótico inicial tratados por microcirurgia a laser transoral. Método Fizemos um estudo retrospectivo em uma coorte de 153 pacientes com câncer glótico inicial (Tis, T1, T2) tratados por microcirurgia transoral a laser. As margens de ressecção foram classificadas da seguinte forma: livre, se a distância margem macroscópica-tumor fosse de pelo menos 2 mm; próxima, se fosse menor do que 2 mm; e positiva se a margem fosse afetada pelo carcinoma. Assim, os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos: com margens de ressecção livres (grupo A) e com margens de ressecção positivas, próximas ou não avaliáveis (grupo B). O grupo A (36) foi submetido a seguimento periódico. O grupo B (117) foi submetido a uma cirurgia de revisão com laser de CO2 2 meses após a cirurgia. Quinze pacientes do grupo A com suspeita de persistência do carcinoma durante o seguimento foram submetidos a uma segunda ressecção a laser após um intervalo de 4 a 8 meses após a primeira cirurgia. A sobrevida global, a sobrevida livre de doença, a sobrevida doença-específica, o controle local final com laser isolado e as taxas de preservação de órgãos foram estimados. Resultados A taxa de sobrevida global em cinco anos e a sobrevida doença-específica em 5 anos foi de 100% em ambos os grupos. A taxa de preservação laríngea em cinco anos foi de 100% no grupo A e 95,2% no grupo B. A sobrevida livre de doença em cinco anos foi de 92,15% e o controle local final em 5 anos com laser isolado em 92,15% dos pacientes. Conclusões A revisão da microcirurgia transoral a laser é capaz de confirmar a radicalidade oncológica na maioria dos casos, mesmo em caso de margens positivas, próximas ou não avaliáveis. Considerando nossos resultados, de acordo com a nossa experiência, a cirurgia de revisão (second look) com laser de CO2 é uma estratégia terapêutica a ser pensada mesmo no caso de margens próximas ou não avaliáveis, bem como em margens positivas.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide with many molecular functions, including maintaining the structure and physiology of the tissues, tissue remodeling, and inflammation. HA is found naturally in physiological tear fluid, possesses excellent mucus-layer-adhesive properties, and is successfully employed in the treatment of dry eye syndrome (DES). However, HA has as major drawback: its rapid in vivo degradation by hyaluronidase. We report on a unique material, namely, HA-3, obtained by the functionalization of HA with the metalloproteinase inhibitor 3 (MMPI). This material is characterized by an increased resistance to hyaluronidase degradation, associated with MMP inhibition properties. The ability of HA-3 to prevent dehydration of human corneal epithelial cells in vitro and in vivo may accelerate the development of more efficient DES treatment and broaden the application of HA in human diseases.

Vinegar is a fermented product that is appreciated world-wide. It can be obtained from different kinds of matrices. Specifically, it is a solution of acetic acid produced by a two stage fermentation process. The first is an alcoholic fermentation, where the sugars are converted in ethanol and lower metabolites by the yeast action, generally Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This was performed through a technique that is expanding more and more, the so-called "pied de cuve". The second step is an acetic fermentation where acetic acid bacteria (AAB) action causes the conversion of ethanol into acetic acid. Overall, the aim of this research is to follow wine vinegar production step by step through the volatiloma analysis by metal oxide semiconductor MOX sensors developed by Nano Sensor Systems S.r.l. This work is based on wine vinegar monitored from the grape must to the formed vinegar. The monitoring lasted 4 months and the analyses were carried out with a new generation of Electronic Nose (EN) engineered by Nano Sensor Systems S.r.l., called Small Sensor Systems Plus (S3+), equipped with an array of six gas MOX sensors with different sensing layers each. In particular, real-time monitoring made it possible to follow and to differentiate each step of the vinegar production. The principal component analysis (PCA) method was the statistical multivariate analysis utilized to process the dataset obtained from the sensors. A closer look to PCA graphs affirms how the sensors were able to cluster the production steps in a chronologically correct manner.

Introduction: Zenker's diverticulum is an acquired sac-like outpouching of the mucosa and submucosa layers originating at the pharyngoesophageal junction. The predominant symptom of Zenker's diverticulum is dysphagia. Videofluoroscopy confirms the diagnosis. Forestier disease is a clinical entity characterized by ossification of anterolateral vertebral ligament and anterior osteophyte formation along the anterolateral spinal column. Its etiopathogenesis remains unknown and common symptoms are dysphagia, dysphonia and airway obstruction. The objective of this study is to identify a pathophysiological correlation between Forestier disease and the onset of Zenker's diverticulum. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted. The electronic database of our Radiology Unit was analyzed in order to identify patients with hypopharyngeal diverticulum and osteophytes at the cervical vertebrae level, from January 2010 to January 2021. The search was performed using precise keywords. Results: The computerized database search outlined 10 imaging exams: 5 videofluorographies and 5 computed tomography scans. In 100% of the cases, dysphagia was the main symptom that led to the diagnostic assessment; 30% of patients, on the other hand, reported dyspnoea. From the data analysis, the male / female ratio is 1: 1 and the average age of the patients is 64.8 (+/- 11.31) years. Conclusions: We assume that the anatomical abnormalities in Forestier disease may cause an increase of pharyngeal pressure and consequently support the development of the Zenker's diverticulum. Hence, it is always recommended to investigate the presence of Zenker's diverticulum in a patient with Forestier disease, especially for the life-threatening complications of Zenker's diverticulum.

High-κ dielectrics are insulating materials with higher permittivity than silicon dioxide. These materials have already found application in microelectronics, mainly as gate insulators or passivating layers for silicon (Si) technology. However, since the last decade, the post-Si era began with the pervasive introduction of wide band gap (WBG) semiconductors, such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), which opened new perspectives for high-κ materials in these emerging technologies. In this context, aluminium and hafnium oxides (i.e., Al2O3, HfO2) and some rare earth oxides (e.g., CeO2, Gd2O3, Sc2O3) are promising high-κ binary oxides that can find application as gate dielectric layers in the next generation of high-power and high-frequency transistors based on SiC and GaN. This review paper gives a general overview of high-permittivity binary oxides thin films for post-Si electronic devices. In particular, focus is placed on high-κ binary oxides grown by atomic layer deposition on WBG semiconductors (silicon carbide and gallium nitride), as either amorphous or crystalline films. The impacts of deposition modes and pre- or postdeposition treatments are both discussed. Moreover, the dielectric behaviour of these films is also presented, and some examples of high-κ binary oxides applied to SiC and GaN transistors are reported. The potential advantages and the current limitations of these technologies are highlighted.

In this paper, we report a multiscale investigation of the compositional, morphological, structural, electrical, and optical emission properties of 2H-MoS2 obtained by sulfurization at 800 °C of very thin MoO3 films (with thickness ranging from ~2.8 nm to ~4.2 nm) on a SiO2/Si substrate. XPS analyses confirmed that the sulfurization was very effective in the reduction of the oxide to MoS2, with only a small percentage of residual MoO3 present in the final film. High-resolution TEM/STEM analyses revealed the formation of few (i.e., 2-3 layers) of MoS2 nearly aligned with the SiO2 surface in the case of the thinnest (~2.8 nm) MoO3 film, whereas multilayers of MoS2 partially standing up with respect to the substrate were observed for the ~4.2 nm one. Such different configurations indicate the prevalence of different mechanisms (i.e., vapour-solid surface reaction or S diffusion within the film) as a function of the thickness. The uniform thickness distribution of the few-layer and multilayer MoS2 was confirmed by Raman mapping. Furthermore, the correlative plot of the characteristic A1g-E2g Raman modes revealed a compressive strain (ε ≈ -0.78 ± 0.18%) and the coexistence of n- and p-type doped areas in the few-layer MoS2 on SiO2, where the p-type doping is probably due to the presence of residual MoO3. Nanoscale resolution current mapping by C-AFM showed local inhomogeneities in the conductivity of the few-layer MoS2, which are well correlated to the lateral changes in the strain detected by Raman. Finally, characteristic spectroscopic signatures of the defects/disorder in MoS2 films produced by sulfurization were identified by a comparative analysis of Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra with CVD grown MoS2 flakes.
