Bacterial panicle blight (BPB) is among the three most limiting rice diseases in Louisiana and the southern United States. The identity and characterization of pathogens associated with this disease was unclear. This research details studies carried out on the pathogens causing BPB on rice in Louisiana and other rice producing southern states. Bacterial strains were isolated from BPB-infected sheath, panicle, or grain samples collected from rice fields in Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. In greenhouse inoculation tests, 292 of 364 strains were pathogenic on rice seedlings or panicles. Identification of strains in the pathogen complex by growth on S-PG medium, carbon source utilization profile (Biolog), cellular fatty acid analysis, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods revealed that 76 and 5% of the strains were Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli, respectively. The other strains have not been conclusively identified. Although strains of both species produced similar symptoms on rice, B. glumae strains were generally more aggressive and caused more severe symptoms on rice than B. gladioli. Virulent strains of both species produced toxoflavin in culture. The two species had similar growth responses to temperature, and optima ranged from 38 to 40°C for B. glumae and 35 to 37°C for B. gladioli. PCR was the most sensitive and accurate method tested for identifying the bacterial pathogens to the species level. The 16S rDNA gene and 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequences of the B. glumae and B. gladioli strains from rice showed more than 99% sequence homology with published sequences. A real-time PCR system was developed to detect and quantify this pathogen from infected seed lots. Our results clearly indicate that B. glumae and B. gladioli were the major pathogens causing BPB in the southern United States.

The development of sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani)-resistant rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars will allow producers to use less fungicide and to avoid significant reductions in grain and milling yields. Among cultivars currently in cultivation in the southern United States rice-producing region, sheath blight resistance levels range from very susceptible to moderately susceptible. A study was conducted to determine the response of cultivars with different levels of susceptibility to sheath blight inoculations and fungicide applications and to determine the impact of sheath blight disease development on rice yield and quality. Sheath blight epidemics in field plots were initiated by inoculation at the panicle differentiation growth stage from 2003 through 2005. Azoxystrobin at 0.17 kg a.i. ha-1 and flutolanil at 0.56 kg a.i. ha-1 were applied in sequential applications at midboot and 50 to 70% heading. Inoculation significantly increased sheath blight severity and incidence and caused yield losses of 4% in moderately susceptible cv. Francis to 21% in very susceptible cv. Cocodrie. Milling yield was affected to a lesser extent. Fungicide treatments reduced sheath blight incidence and severity regardless of cultivar. Azoxystrobin was more effective than flutolanil in minimizing yield loss due to sheath blight in all cultivars except Francis.

Growing blast susceptible rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars often requires farmers to use fungicides to prevent significant reductions in rice grain and milling yields. Studies were conducted to determine the optimum rate and rice growth stage for single or multiple applications of azoxystrobin to control blast (Pyricularia grisea). Azoxystrobin was applied foliarly to naturally infected field plots in 2001 to 2005 at rates of 0.11, 0.17, and 0.22 kg a.i. ha-1 at boot (B) and heading (H) or only at H growth stages, and at 0.17 kg a.i. ha-1 at 5 (H+5), 10 (H+10), and 15 (H+15) days after H and B with low or high blast pressure. Head blast incidence (percent heads infected) was assessed 1 to 2 weeks before harvest. A fungicide application made at H, H+5, and B+H significantly reduced blast incidence with high and low disease pressure, resulting in significantly higher grain and head rice milling yields compared with unsprayed plots with high blast pressure. There were no significant effects of fungicide rate on blast development or yield following the H, B+H, and H+5 applications. With fungicide applications made at B, H+10, and H+15 days postheading, rice had higher disease incidence, resulting in lower grain and milling yields compared with rice receiving a heading application.

The lack of sheath blight-resistant cultivars requires rice (Oryza sativa) farmers to use fungicides to control the disease and avoid significant reductions in grain and milling yield. Sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) epidemics can begin over a period of weeks during the growing season, and initiation date can have significant effects on crop damage and fungicide application timing. Studies were conducted to determine how different epidemic initiation and azoxystrobin application timings affect disease development, rice yield, and milling quality. Sheath blight epidemics in field plots were initiated by inoculation at the green ring (GR), panicle differentiation (PD), early boot (EB), and late boot (LB) growth stages in 2002 to 2004. Azoxystrobin was applied to the foliage at 0.17 kg a.i. ha-1 at 7 days after PD (PD+7), midboot (B), and 50% heading (H). Inoculation significantly increased sheath blight severity and incidence and reduced yield and milling quality. There were no significant effects of inoculation timing at the GR, PD, EB, and LB growth stages. Fungicide applications made between PD+7 and H reduced sheath blight severity and incidence, resulting in higher yield and head rice milling yield compared with inoculated but nonsprayed plots.

Studies were conducted to determine the best rate and rice growth stage for a single application of azoxystrobin, a fungicide recently labeled for this use, to effectively control sheath blight. Azoxystrobin was applied foliarly to inoculated field plots in 2000 to 2002 using rates of 0.22, 0.17, and 0.11 kg a.i. ha -1 at 7 days after panicle differentiation (PD+7), boot (B), and heading (H) growth stages and at 0.17 kg a.i. ha-1 at 5, 10, and 15 days after heading. Sheath blight severity (measured on a 0 to 9 scale) and incidence (percent tillers infected) were assessed 1 to 2 weeks before harvest. A fungicide application made between PD+7 and H significantly reduced sheath blight severity, which resulted in significantly higher yield and head rice milling yield compared with inoculated unsprayed plots. There were no significant effects of fungicide rate at the PD+7, B, and H growth stages. Fungicide-treated plots had yield and milling yield similar to the very lightly diseased, uninoculated check plots included for comparison. With fungicide application made postheading, rice had higher disease severity, resulting in lower yields and milling yield compared with rice receiving earlier applications.

False smut, caused by Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takah., has been occurring in Louisiana rice since at least 1906 (4). A color plate (no. 69) of the disease was published in the Compendium of Rice Diseases published by the American Phytopathological Society (3). The slide for this plate was taken by M. C. Rush in 1976 of rice grown at the Rice Research Station at Crowley, LA. Since that time, the disease has been sporadic and light in Louisiana. In 1997, however, incidence was high. False smut was present on many germ plasms at the Rice Research Station in Crowley and was observed on commercial cultivars in several growers' fields in southwestern Louisiana. Incidence ranged from 1 to 15% of tillers infected with at least two to three spore balls per infected panicle. The disease occurred on both long- and medium-grain cultivars. False smut of rice occurs in the field at the hard dough to mature stages of the crop. A few spikelets in a panicle transform into globose, yellowish green, velvety spore balls that are 2 to 5 cm in diameter and covered by a thin orange membrane. The membrane bursts open and releases powdery dark green spores. The chlamydospores formed in the spore balls are spherical to elliptical, warty, olivaceous, and 3 to 5 × 4 to 6 µm in dimension. Some of the spore balls develop one or more sclerotia, which are the overwintering structure, in the center. False smut has been considered a minor disease of rice that occurs sporadically in Louisiana. The recent discovery of ustilotoxin, a phytotoxin and mycotoxin, produced by this pathogen on diseased tissues suggests that the fungus may be of concern as a contaminant on rice products consumed by livestock and humans (1,2). Traditionally, the literature has described a certain population as at risk for tetanus infection. We reviewed the demographics, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, management, and outcome of all patients who presented to our emergency department (ED) with tetanus in the last 10 years and compared our experience with this classic literature. We performed a retrospective case series review at a large, inner-city medical center; 11 cases of tetanus were identified from 1986 to 1997. Nine male and two female patients were identified with an average age of 45 years. All had an acute injury to the skin, and most (82%) reported having no history of recent immunization. The most common recorded symptoms were trismus and rigidity in the abdomen, neck, back, or extremities. There was only one misdiagnosis in the ED. Three patients died in the hospital, while the other eight were discharged either home or to a rehabilitation facility. In contrast to the classic literature, we found that tetanus in our inner city ED presented in recent immigrants, particularly younger men, over half of whom had received no childhood immunization. Laboratory results and cultures are of little diagnostic value, so timely recognition of the clinical presentation is important.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of bedside renal ultrasonography (US) and plain radiography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (KUB) as the initial investigative modality for those patients presenting to the ED with unilateral flank pain and hematuria. The hypothesis was that the renal US + KUB may obviate the need for emergent i.v. pyelography (i.v.P) in a majority of patients. METHODS: Prospective study over an 8-month period of all consecutive adult patients between the ages of 18 and 65 years presenting with unilateral flank pain and hematuria to the ED at LAC + USC Medical Center. Patients received KUB followed by a 500-mL bolus of normal saline. Bedside US was then performed by emergency physicians (EPs). Hydronephrosis of the kidney was graded as mild, moderate, or severe. All patients then underwent i.v.P. The results of the bedside US + KUB were then compared with those of i.v.P (the criterion standard). RESULTS: Of a total of 139 eligible patients, 108 were enrolled. The combination of US and KUB correctly identified pathology consistent with nephroureterolithiasis with a sensitivity of 97.1% (95% CI = 93.1-100%) when compared with i.v.P. The KUB + US results were falsely positive in 16 patients, resulting in a specificity of 58.9% (95% CI = 43.5-74.3%). The positive predictive value of the combined modality was 80.7%, the negative predictive value was 92.0%, and the overall accuracy was 83.3%. CONCLUSION: The bedside US + KUB has a high sensitivity and can be performed rapidly at the bedside by the EP when compared with i.v.P. This combined modality is an effective screening tool in the initial evaluation of ureteral colic.

White leaf streak, caused by Mycovellosiella oryzae (Deighton and Shaw) Deighton (syn. Ramularia oryzae), was found in Louisiana rice. The symptoms closely resemble those of narrow brown leaf spot caused by Cercospora janseana (Racib.) O. Const. (syn. C. oryzae (Miyake)), and it is difficult to distinguish between these two diseases. Initially both produce similar elongated light brown lesions, but later the lesions of white leaf streak become wider with a whitish center and are surrounded by a narrow light brown margin (2,3). The disease was first observed at the Rice Research Station, Crowley, LA, in 1996 on older leaves of the cultivar Lemont at maturity. Leaves containing the unusual lesion types were placed in a moist chamber and incubated at 28°C for 5 days. Abundant conidia were produced and the fungus was isolated on acidified potato dextrose agar (APDA) by single spore isolation and by plating infected tissues after surface sterilization in 40% Clorox for 10 to 15 min. The colonies grew slowly on APDA and were dark gray in color. The conidia formed in branched chains or singly. They were hyaline, cylindrical with tapering ends and a thick hilum; 0 to 3 septate, and 15 to 35 m long (1,3). Pathogenicity tests were conducted in the greenhouse on the Lemont and Cypress rice cultivars by spraying a conidial suspension (103-4 conidia per ml) onto leaf blades at boot stage. Conidia were produced by growing the fungus on PDA for 10 to 14 days. Inoculated plants were placed inside a humid chamber in a greenhouse and maintained for 4 to 5 weeks. Many elongated lesions similar to those observed in the field were produced 3 to 4 weeks after inoculation. Reisolation from these lesions yielded M. oryzae. With the same methods, 45 cultivars and lines were inoculated to determine their reactions to this disease. Most of the cultivars grown in the southern United States were moderately susceptible or susceptible to white leaf streak. Foreign cultivars tested, including BR-7, BR-11, Cica-4, Cica-6, Cica-7. Cica-8, Cica-9, Oryzica llanos, Rax clear, Teqing, and Tetep, were resistant. In 1997, the disease was found prevalent on many cultivars grown at the Rice Research Station, Crowley, LA. As symptoms of both white leaf streak and narrow brown leaf spot were sometimes observed on the same leaf; it is possible that the disease has been present, but not identified as a separate disease because of the similarity of the symptoms of the two diseases. A thorough survey is necessary to determine the extent of its occurrence and further studies are necessary to determine its yield loss potential. At present it appears to be a minor problem for Louisiana rice. White leaf streak has previously been recorded from Papua New Guinea on cultivated Oryza sativa, and from the Solomon Islands, Sabah, Nizeria, and Sierra Leone on cultivated O. glabberima Steudel and on wild perennial rice O. berthii A.
