RESUMO

Short wavelength free-electron lasers (FELs), providing pulses of ultrahigh photon intensity, have revolutionized spectroscopy on ionic targets. Their exceptional photon flux enables multiple photon absorptions within a single femtosecond pulse, which in turn allows for deep insights into the photoionization process itself as well as into evolving ionic states of a target. Here we employ ultraintense pulses from the FEL FERMI to spectroscopically investigate the sequential emission of electrons from gaseous, atomic argon in the neutral as well as the ionic ground state. A pronounced forward-backward symmetry breaking of the angularly resolved emission patterns with respect to the light propagation direction is experimentally observed and theoretically explained for the region of the Cooper minimum, where the asymmetry of electron emission is strongly enhanced. These findings aim to originate a better understanding of the fundamentals of photon momentum transfer in ionic matter.

RESUMO

Intense, circularly polarized extreme-ultraviolet and near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses are combined to double ionize atomic helium via the oriented intermediate He^{+}(3p) resonance state. Applying angle-resolved electron spectroscopy, we find a large photon helicity dependence of the spectrum and the angular distribution of the electrons ejected from the resonance by NIR multiphoton absorption. The measured circular dichroism is unexpectedly found to vary strongly as a function of the NIR intensity. The experimental data are well described by theoretical modeling and possible mechanisms are discussed.

RESUMO

Ionization of atoms and molecules in strong laser fields is a fundamental process in many fields of research, especially in the emerging field of attosecond science. So far, demonstrably accurate data have only been acquired for atomic hydrogen (H), a species that is accessible to few investigators. Here, we present measurements of the ionization yield for argon, krypton, and xenon with percent-level accuracy, calibrated using H, in a laser regime widely used in attosecond science. We derive a transferable calibration standard for laser peak intensity, accurate to 1.3%, that is based on a simple reference curve. In addition, our measurements provide a much needed benchmark for testing models of ionization in noble-gas atoms, such as the widely employed single-active electron approximation.

RESUMO

Angle-resolved electron spectroscopy in coincidence with high-resolution mass spectroscopy has been applied to study two-color resonant photoionization in atomic xenon. Separation of different isotopes enabled us to extract results for the electronic dynamics free from depolarization effects, which are generally introduced by the coupling of the electronic and nuclear angular momenta. The concerted experimental and theoretical analysis of the photoelectron angular distributions in the region of an autoionizing resonance emphasizes the strong sensitivity of the observed structures to the fine details of the treatment of the underlying dynamics.

RESUMO

Magnetic dichroism in the angular distribution has been demonstrated for single-electron photoemission from inner ns(2) subshells of gaseous atomic targets using the example of K-shell photoionization of polarized Li atoms laser prepared in the 1s(2)2p (2)P(3/2) excited state. The effect is pronounced for the conjugate shakeup and conjugate shakedown photoelectron lines, and less important, though observable, for the main and direct shakeup lines. The phenomenon is caused by configuration interaction in the final continuum state and is quantitatively described by the close-coupling R-matrix calculations.

RESUMO

We present experimental data on strong-field ionization of atomic hydrogen by few-cycle laser pulses. We obtain quantitative agreement at the 10% level between the data and an ab initio simulation over a wide range of laser intensities and electron energies.

RESUMO

The one-center approach for molecular Auger decay is applied to predict the angular distribution of Auger electrons from rotating and fixed-in-space molecules. For that purpose, phase shifts between the Auger decay amplitudes have been incorporated in the atomic model. The approach is applied to the resonant Auger decay of the photoexcited C 1s-->2pi resonance in carbon monoxide. It is discussed how the symmetry of the final ionic state is related to features in the angular distributions and a parametrization for the molecular frame Auger electron angular distribution is suggested. The angular distribution of Auger electrons after partial orientation of the molecule by the sigma-->pi-excitation process is also calculated and compared to available experimental and theoretical data. The results of the one-center approach are at least of the same quality as the available theoretical data even though the latter stem from a much more sophisticated method. As the one-center approximation can be applied with low computational demand even to extended systems, the present approach opens a way to describe the angular distribution of Auger electrons in a wide variety of applications.

RESUMO

Two-color multiphoton ionization of atomic helium was investigated by combining extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation from the Free Electron Laser in Hamburg with an intense synchronized optical laser. In the photoelectron spectrum, lines associated with direct ionization and above-threshold ionization show strong variations of their amplitudes as a function of both the intensity of the optical dressing field and the relative orientation of the linear polarization vectors of the two fields. The polarization dependence provides direct insight into the symmetry of the outgoing electrons in above-threshold ionization. In the high field regime, the monochromaticity of the XUV radiation enables the unperturbed observation of nonlinear processes in the optical field.

RESUMO

The molecular-frame angular distributions of resonantly excited CO:C(1s) --> pi* Auger electrons were determined using angle-resolved electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy in combination with a novel transformation procedure. Our new methodology yields full three-dimensional electron angular distributions with high energy resolution from the measurement of electrons at only two angles. The experimentally determined distributions are well reproduced by calculations performed in a simple one-center approximation, allowing an unambiguous identification of several overlapping Auger lines.

RESUMO

Resonant atomic excitation by synchrotron radiation and subsequent ionization by a tunable dye laser is used to study the photoionization of short-lived Rydberg states in Xe. By combining circular and linear polarization of the synchrotron as well as of the laser photons the partial photoionization cross sections were separated in the region of overlapping autoionizing resonances of different symmetry and the parameters of the resonances were extracted.

RESUMO

Completely fine-structure-resolved photoelectron spectra produced from sodium atoms selectively excited into the Na* 2p(6)3p (2)P(1/2) and (2)P(3/2) states were obtained using a third generation synchrotron source in conjunction with laser pumping and high-resolution spectrometry. The spectra show dramatically different behaviors. The strong variations observed in the regions of the Na+ 2p(5)3p (1,3)L(J) photolines and the Na+ 2p(5)4p (1,3)L(J) shakeup satellites are explained within a generalized geometrical model, accounting for the intermediate angular momentum coupling in the ionic states.

RESUMO

The relative contributions of the partial electron waves emitted in the Auger decay of the Xe* 4d(-1)(5/2)6p(J(*)=1) resonance have been determined by fluorescence polarimetry after excitation with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation. The analysis of circularly polarized fluorescence of the photoion leads to an independent determination of the orientation parameters for all states of the Xe II 5p(4)6p multiplet. The present study provides, in combination with data on the angular distribution and spin polarization of the Auger electrons, complete quantum mechanical information on the resonant Auger decay, i.e., branching ratios and relative phases of the Auger decay amplitudes.

RESUMO

Visible-UV fluorescence has been analyzed after resonant Cl 2p core excitation of HCl molecules. The dispersed fluorescence spectra are dominated by emissions from atomic fragments. In particular, an intense and polarized Balmer H(alpha) line is observed after photoexcitation of the 2p(-1)nl Rydberg states. The excited hydrogen atoms are efficiently produced in the resonant Auger process and the subsequent dissociation of high lying HCl+ states. The experimental results, complemented by a time-resolved measurement of the H(alpha) decay, point to a universal mechanism for the production of H( n = 3) atoms in the dissociation of innershell excited HCl molecules.
