RESUMO

The coherence length of the Frenkel excitons (Ncoh) is one of the most critical parameters governing many key features of supramolecular J-aggregates. Determining experimentally the value of Ncoh is a nontrivial task since it is sensitive to the technique/method applied, causing discrepancies in the literature data even for the same chemical compound and aggregation conditions. By using a combination of different experimental techniques including UV-vis-NIR, fluorescence emission, time-resolved photoluminescence, and transient absorption spectroscopies, we determined Ncoh values for J-aggregates of a cyanine dye. We found that the absorption spectroscopy alone - a widely used technique- fails in determining right value for Ncoh. The correct approach is based on the modification of photoluminescence lifetime and nonlinear response upon aggregation and careful analysis of the Stokes shift and electron-phonon coupling strength. This approach revealed that Ncoh of JC-1 J-aggregates ranges from 3 to 6.

In photobiocatalytical processes involving the simultaneous oxidation of water and reduction of specific organic molecules (e.g., cofactors), the lack of physical separation of the redox half-reactions adversely affects the product stability. This is largely because organic molecules are generally less stable within harsh oxidative environments. In general, surface co-catalysts are able to improve the selectivity of photocatalysts towards water oxidation. However, harsh oxidative environments reduce the chemical stability of the organic molecules. Herein, we show that the use of Co3O4 as a surface co-catalyst on silver orthophosphate improve water photo-oxidation in the presence of organic dye molecules, such as methylene blue, that typically exhibits susceptibility toward photodegradation. The presence of Co3O4 on the photocatalyst surface prevents the adsorption of the organic dye, thus reducing its degradation rate. These findings provide a promising scenario for the visible light-driven reduction of organic molecules using water as an electron donor.

Developing strategies to detect single nucleotide DNA mutations associated with treatment decisions in cancer patients from liquid biopsies is a rapidly emerging area of personalized medicine that requires high specificity. Here we report how to design an easy enzyme-free approach that could create a platform for detection of L858R mutation of EGFR that is a predictive biomarker of tyrosine kinase treatment in many cancers. This approach includes the addition of blocking probes with the antisense ssDNA at different blocking positions and different concentrations such as to avoid re-annealing with the respective sense ssDNA. The successful blocking strategy was corroborated by fluorescence spectroscopy in solution using two distinct FRET pairs and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements under comparable experimental conditions, as the hybridization rate-limiting step in both methods is the nucleation process. The efficiency of hybridization of each blocking probe was strongly dependent on its position particularly when the analyte possesses a secondary hairpin-structure. We tested the performance of blocking probes in combination with gold nanoparticles; the obtained results were in agreement with those of QCM-D. These findings could facilitate the development of better biosensors, especially those using probes containing secondary structure.

RESUMO

This article describes automation of temperature-dependent terahertz spectroscopic experiments. The proposed dual-heater temperature controller based on a cascade proportional-integral-derivative algorithm provides smooth temperature changes in the polyethylene-based pharmaceutical pellet samples. The device has been integrated with a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. Thermodynamic experiments can now be performed without any probe inserted into the measured sample. Selected results of temperature-induced evolution in terahertz spectra are presented.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present an electronic circuit used to bias a photoconductive antenna that generates terahertz radiation. The working principles and the design process for the device are discussed in detail. The noise and shape of the wave measurements for a built device are considered. Furthermore, their impact on a terahertz pulse and its spectra is also examined. The proposed implementation is simple to build, robust and offers a real improvement over THz instrumentation due to the frequency tuning. Additionally, it provides for galvanic isolation and ESD protection.
