RESUMO

Human relaxin was administered to young rats through either minipumps (group P) or subcutaneous injections (group I). Control rats received pump implants containing placebo (group C). Day 0 was the day of orthodontic appliance placement and activation to pull bilateral upper first molars forward, and day 14 was the end time point. Cephalometric radiographs (three repeated exposures) were taken at 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days. The total length of three maxillary molar segments and the space between the first and second molars were measured under a dissecting microscope postmortem. Both groups P and I showed rapid tooth movement at day 3. Movement slowed, but it still increased gradually in group P while decreasing in group I after that. Concurrent tooth lateral drifts to the buccal side were smaller in both groups P and I. The length and space were larger in both groups P and I. Thus, administration of human relaxin may accelerate the early stages of orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare IL-6 levels in oral exfoliated mucosal cell samples and in serum in subjects with oral lichen planus versus controls. Study design Ten patients with ulcerative OLP, 10 with reticular OLP, and 10 control subjects were recruited at a University Oral Medicine Clinic. Using smear tissue culture brushes, oral samples were collected from lesional sites for OLP patients and from buccal mucosa for controls into vials with 300 muL PBS. After centrifugation, the supernatants were aspirated for cytokine ELISA assay and protein assay. Venous blood was processed to serum for ELISA assay. Oral IL-6 was expressed as both pg/mL and pg/mug protein, and serum IL-6 was expressed as pg/mL. RESULTS: The mean oral IL-6 levels were higher in the ulcerative OLP group (11.19 +/- 5.34 pg/mL) than in the reticular OLP (1.05 +/- 0.34 pg/mL) and control (0.52 +/- 0.29 pg/mL) groups. There were significant differences between ulcerative OLP and reticular OLP groups (P < .039), and between ulcerative OLP and control groups (P < .009). After the standardization of IL-6 concentration by protein, a significant difference in IL-6 concentration was shown only between the ulcerative OLP (0.0245 +/- 0.0121 pg/mug protein) and control (0.0023 +/- 0.0012 pg/mug protein) groups (P < .029). Similarly, the ulcerative OLP group showed a significantly higher serum IL-6 level than the control group (P < .021). CONCLUSION: Both oral and serum IL-6 levels were higher in patients with ulcerative OLP. An oral exfoliated cell technique may be a useful and sensitive method to measure IL-6 in patients with OLP as it provided results consistent with those found in peripheral blood.

Primary intraoral melanoma is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis, accounting for 1% to 8% of all melanoma in Europe and the United States. The incidence (12%) and 5-year survival rate (17.4%) are higher in Japan. We report a case of oral lentiginous melanoma in a Japanese-American man who survived disease-free for more than 5 years after surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy but developed chronic mucositis of the palate under the denture in the primary radiated field. This lesion responded to antifungal therapy. Subsequent multiple biopsies ruled out the recurrence of melanoma but demonstrated prolonged melanocytic hyperplasia and focal epithelial atypia. We reviewed clinical differences in oral melanoma reported in the United States and Japanese literature, and describe the wide variety of oral clinical features of postoperative radiation and chemotherapy, as well as the oral tissue changes caused by denture-induced mucositis and candidiasis in such patients. Dental clinicians should conduct a thorough head, neck, and oral follow-up with increased vigilance in patients with a history of prior cancer.
