RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer is strongly associated with the habit of tobacco chewing, alcohol, and betel quid consumption in India. However, sometimes, majority of the population develop oral cancer without exposure to these risk factors and are sometimes cautious about their fitness, suggesting that additional causes such as genetic predisposition, diet, and viral agents may be associated which need to explored. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to establish a possible correlation between clinical types of leukoplakia with their histopathological features of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the presence or absence of HPV and expression of p53through immunohistochemistry (IHC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sample comprised of 40 cases of leukoplakia and 10 cases as control group. Three sections were prepared from each biopsy and subjected to IHC and hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) stain, respectively. IHC-stained slides were used to evaluate the expression of p53 and HPV and then correlated with the features of HPV infection using H and E staining. Chi-square test with a statistical analysis software package (SPSS software Version 20.0) was used. OBSERVATION AND RESULTS: The P value for p53 against HPV (IHC) was 0.012, which indicates a significant difference between positivity proportion of P53 and HPV (IHC), whereas the P value for koilocyte and HPV (IHC) is 0.311, which is nonsignificant and indicates no significance of difference between proportion of positivity between koilocyte and HPV (IHC). CONCLUSION: The expression of p53 was proportionally significant to the expression of positivity of HPV, but there was no significant association between koilocyte and p53 expression.

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts which belong to choristomas, usually manifest clinically as superficial and deep cystic movable formations, most often with a slow and intermittent growth. In the present article we report a case of an external angular dermoid cyst in a 13-year-old boy, the growth of which was steady on progression. Surgical excision of the cyst was done by approaching through an external sub-brow incision. Dermoid cysts are unusual neoplasms that often seen in children with the most commonly affected site being the orbit in the head and neck region. Such cysts may cause compression to the eye lobe and the optic nerve. Hence, operative procedures may be suggested in the case of such cysts which have a constant progression

RESUMO

Odontomas are tumours of odontogenic origin. In these tumours both the epithelial and mesenchymal cells undergo differentiation to form enamel and dentin with variable amounts of cementum and pulp tissue. The odontomas represent a hamartoma rather than a neoplasm. When the enamel and dentin are laid down in an organized manner it is termed as a compound odontoma wherein the tumour forms a collection of small structures resembling teeth. On the other hand, an irregular mass with no similarity to teeth is termed as a complex odontoma. There are cases of extensive and multiple compound odontomas which have been identified in either of the jaws. The present case is rare with multiple compound odontomas involving both the jaws of 45-year-old male patient. A review of seven such cases reported so far has been presented.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tumor associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) is believed to play a significant role in biological behavior of the carcinoma. Eosinophils are involved in immune reaction. Various studies have been carried out regarding their role in tumor progression or regulation. In oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), eosinophils are associated with favourable or unfavourable prognosis and hence their role is yet unclear. To compare the tissue eosinophils in OSCC and normal tissue and to correlate the expression of TATE in different grades of OSCC. METHOD: Study comprised 30 cases, 6 normal and 24 histopathologically diagnosed with OSCC. 4 micron thick sections were stained using 1% congo red solution. The sections were examined under high power (×40) and 10 consecutive microscopic fields were studied. The average number of eosinophils were statistically analysed. RESULTS: The tabulated results showed that the median value of tissue eosinophils, increased in OSCC compared to normal mucosa. Analysis on different grades of carcinoma showed a higher TATE in Well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma as compared to other grades. CONCLUSION: The higher eosinophil count in OSCC compare to normal tissue might have a role in stromal invasion and infiltration. TATE can be used as an indicator of favourable prognosis in OSCC.

RESUMO

Neurofibroma (NF) is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerve cells. NF may extend either as a solitary lesion or as part of a generalized syndrome of neurofibromatosis. Intraorally, the intraosseous variant of neurofibroma is a very rare tumor. The literature provides only few cases of solitary intraosseous neurofibroma of the mandible. We report a case of 28-year-old female who was diagnosed with a solitary intraosseous neurofibroma involving the lower left quadrant of the mandible. The present case is rare in regard to its dimensions and its location.
