Objective: In January 2023, a rare event of collective inhalation paraquat poisoning occurred in Shandong, China. To analyze the clinical characteristics of an event of respiratory tract paraquat poisoning through inhalation. Methods: Clinical data from eight patients with paraquat inhalation poisoning were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The patients were mainly exposed to paraquat via the respiratory tract. The main clinical manifestations were ocular and respiratory irritation. Lung computed tomography (CT) showed that all eight patients had varying degrees of lung injury, mainly manifesting as exudative lesions. Laboratory tests revealed arterial blood gas hypoxemia, abnormal white blood cell count, and increased neutrophil ratio. Sufficient glucocorticoid impact therapy was effective, and all eight patients survived. Conclusion: Eight patients experienced chest tightness, shortness of breath, and varying degrees of lung injury due to inhalation of paraquat through the respiratory tract. The early use of glucocorticoids and other comprehensive treatment measures, active prevention and treatment of lung infections, and protection of organ function have beneficial effects in such cases.

RESUMO

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) possesses a band gap of approximately 4.9 eV, aligning its detection wavelength within the solar-blind region, making it an ideal semiconductor material for solar-blind photodetectors. This study aims to enhance the performance of Ga2O3ultraviolet (UV) detectors by pre-depositing a Ga2O3seed layer on ac-plane sapphire substrate. The x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses validated that the deposited films, following high-temperature annealing, comprisedß-Ga2O3. Comparing samples with and without a 20 nm seed layer, it was found that the former exhibited fewer oxygen defects and substantially improved crystal quality. The incorporation of the seed layer led to the realization of detectors with remarkably low dark current (≤15.3 fA). Moreover, the photo-to-dark current ratio was enhanced by 30% (surpassing 1.3 × 104) and the response/recovery time reduced to 0.9 s/0.01 s, indicating faster performance. Furthermore, these detectors demonstrated higher responsivity (4.8 mA W-1), improved detectivity (2.49 × 1016Jones), and excellent solar-blind characteristics. This study serves as a foundational stepping toward achieving high-qualityß-Ga2O3thin film and UV detector arrays.

In the latter half of the twentieth century, a significant climate phenomenon "diurnal asymmetric warming" emerged, wherein global land surface temperatures increased more rapidly during the night than during the day. However, recent episodes of global brightening and regional droughts and heatwaves have brought notable alterations to this asymmetric warming trend. Here, we re-evaluate sub-diurnal temperature patterns, revealing a substantial increase in the warming rates of daily maximum temperatures (Tmax), while daily minimum temperatures have remained relatively stable. This shift has resulted in a reversal of the diurnal warming trend, expanding the diurnal temperature range over recent decades. The intensified Tmax warming is attributed to a widespread reduction in cloud cover, which has led to increased solar irradiance at the surface. Our findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced scrutiny of recent temperature trends and their implications for the wider earth system.

Diquat (DQ), chemically known as 1,1 '-ethylene-2,2' -bipyridine, is a non-selective herbicide for leaf removal and drying. It has toxic effects on central nervous system cells, and toxic neurological lesions include axonal degeneration and pontine myelolysis. At the same time, DQ can also affect the activity of dopaminergic nerve cells through oxidative stress, causing degeneration and reducing dopamine uptake. With the increasing application of DQ in agricultural production, the clinical reports of neurotoxicity caused by acute DQ poisoning are also increasing. At present, DQ rapid-phase-related toxic encephalopathy mainly involves the pons, midbrain, basal ganglia, thalamus and other brain regions. However, this case is unusual in that the lesion mainly involved the splenium of the corpus callosum. It is also the first time to be reported.

This study focuses on the development of heterojunction photocatalysts for the efficient utilization of solar energy to address the energy crisis and reduce environmental pollution. Cadmium sulfide (CdS)/graphite-type carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanocomposites were synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and their photoelectrochemical properties and photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were characterized. Scanning electron microscope images showed the intimate interface and caviar-like nanoheterojunction of the CdS nanoparticles on g-C3N4 nanospheres, suggesting their potential involvement in the photocatalytic process. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses were conducted to confirm the roles of CdS in the nanoheterojunction. The results showed that 10 wt% CdS/g-C3N4 nanospheres exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than pure g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation. A HER rate of 655.5 µmol/g/h was achieved after three photocatalytic cycles, signifying good photocatalytic stability. The synergistic effect of the Z-scheme heterojunction formed by g-C3N4 and CdS was identified as the main factor responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance and stability. The interface engineering effect of CdS/g-C3N4 facilitated the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This study provides insights into the design and fabrication of efficient HER photocatalysts.

In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have gradually become ideal materials for gas sensors due to their controllable composition, diverse structures and open metal sites. In this research, a simplified hydrothermal method was applied to successfully prepare MOF-derived α-Fe2O3 spindles, and an in situ reduction method was then utilized to deposit Pt, Pd and PtPd bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the α-Fe2O3 spindles. The effects of noble metals Pt, Pd and PtPd on the gas-sensing properties of Fe2O3 were systematically examined. The PtPd/α-Fe2O3 sensor has enhanced gas-sensing performance for triethylamine (TEA), especially at PtPd content of 1.5 wt% and mass ratio of Pt : Pd = 90 : 10, where the response of the sensor to 100 ppm TEA at a lower temperature of 150 °C is 442, which is 34 times higher than that of the original α-Fe2O3 (response of 13). Additionally, the sensor demonstrated improved response/recovery properties and very respectable selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability within 30 days and lower detection limit (500 ppb) at 150 °C. Combining the results of XPS and O2-TPD, the enhanced gas-sensing properties of PtPd bimetallic-modified α-Fe2O3 over monometallic (Pt or Pd) modified α-Fe2O3 were analyzed, which can be attributed to the chemical and electronic sensitization of noble metals and the synergistic effect of the PtPd bimetallic NPs, resulting in more surface defects and enhanced oxygen adsorption capacity of the sensing material. This work provided an effective gas-sensing material for the low-temperature detection and analysis of triethylamine gas.

BACKGROUND: The aim of study was to observe the effect of increased lactate levels during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on protein lactylation, identify the target protein, and investigate the regulatory effect of lactylation on the function of the protein. METHODS: C57B/L6 mice were divided into 3 groups: the control group, HIIT group, and dichloroacetate injection + HIIT group (DCA + HIIT). The HIIT and DCA + HIIT groups underwent 8 weeks of HIIT treatment, and the DCA + HIIT group was injected DCA before HIIT treatment. The expression of lipid metabolism-related genes was determined. Protein lactylation in subcutaneous adipose tissue was identified and analyzed using 4D label-free lactylation quantitative proteomics and bioinformatics analyses. The fatty acid synthase (FASN) lactylation and activity was determined. RESULTS: HIIT had a significant effect on fat loss; this effect was weakened when lactate production was inhibited. HIIT significantly upregulated the protein lactylation while lactate inhibition downregulated in iWAT. FASN had the most modification sites. Lactate treatment increased FASN lactylation levels, inhibited FASN activity, and reduced palmitate and triglyceride synthesis in 3T3-L1 cells. CONCLUSIONS: This investigation revealed that lactate produced by HIIT increased protein pan-lactylation levels in iWAT. FASN lactylation inhibited de novo lipogenesis, which may be an important mechanism in HIIT-induced fat loss.

Chloroacetyl chloride is a potent acylation agent that decomposes violently in water to produce chloroacetic acid and irritant hydrogen chloride. It and its decomposition products are corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system and can cause multiple organ failure. Herein, we report cases of poisoning by chloroacetyl chloride and its decomposition products in the skin and respiratory system. After exposure, one patient developed vomiting, irritability, coma, hypoxemia, hypotension, acidosis, and hypokalemia. Another patient developed bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and decreased vision. One patient died and two recovered. Chloroacetyl chloride and its decomposition products are corrosive and can damage multiple organs after absorption through the skin and respiratory tract, leading to severe heart failure. Cardiogenic shock may be the primary cause of early mortality.

The impact of atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on plant photosynthesis has long been acknowledged, but large interactions with air temperature (T) and soil moisture (SM) still hinder a complete understanding of the influence of VPD on vegetation production across various climate zones. Here, we found a diverging response of productivity to VPD in the Northern Hemisphere by excluding interactive effects of VPD with T and SM. The interactions between VPD and T/SM not only offset the potential positive impact of warming on vegetation productivity but also amplifies the negative effect of soil drying. Notably, for high-latitude ecosystems, there occurs a pronounced shift in vegetation productivity's response to VPD during the growing season when VPD surpasses a threshold of 3.5 to 4.0 hectopascals. These results yield previously unknown insights into the role of VPD in terrestrial ecosystems and enhance our comprehension of the terrestrial carbon cycle's response to global warming.

Ice-rich permafrost thaws in response to rapid Arctic warming, and ground subsidence facilitates the formation of thermokarst lakes. Thermokarst lakes transform the surface energy balance of permafrost, affecting geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, and infrastructure stability, which can further contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the spatial distribution of thermokarst lakes at large scales remains a challenging task. Based on multiple high-resolution environmental factors and thermokarst lake inventories, we used machine learning methods to estimate the spatial distributions of present and future thermokarst lake susceptibility (TLS) maps. We also identified key environmental factors of the TLS map. At 1.8 × 106 km2, high and very high susceptible regions were estimated to cover about 10.4 % of the region poleward of 60°N, which were mainly distributed in permafrost-dominated lowland regions. At least 23.9 % of the area of TLS maps was projected to disappear under representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCPs), with increased susceptibility levels in northern Canada. The slope was the key conditioning factor for the occurrence of thermokarst lakes in Arctic permafrost regions. Compared with similar studies, the reliability of the TLS map was further evaluated using probability calibration curve and coefficient of variation (CV). Our results provide a means for assessing the spatial distribution of thermokarst lakes at the circum-Arctic scale but also improve the understanding of their dynamics in response to the climate system.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact of radiosensitivity on outcomes of spinal metastases treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and identify the correlated prognostic factors. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients who underwent SBRT with no prior radiation for spinal metastases between October 2015 and October 2020 at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. On the basis of radiosensitivity, patients were divided into two groups-radiosensitive and radioresistant. The endpoints included local control (LC), overall survival (OS), pain relief, and time to pain relief. RESULTS: A total of 259 (82.5%) patients with 451 lesions were assessable with a median follow-up time of 10.53 months. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS rates were 59%, 52%, and 44%, respectively. The median survival was 33.17 months. Higher Karnofsky Performance Scale score and shorter time to diagnosis of spinal metastases from primary cancer at consult predicted for better OS (p = 0.02 and p < 0.001, respectively). The presence of other metastases (p = 0.04) and pain at enrollment assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory predicted for worse OS (p = 0.01). The 6-, 12-, and 24-month LC rates were 88%, 86%, and 82%, respectively. Younger age was identified for better LC and pain relief (p < 0.001 and p = 0.04, respectively). There was no variable independently associated with time to pain relief. As for toxicity, no Grade ≥3 toxicity was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of radiosensitivity, SBRT is feasible and appears to be an effective treatment paradigm for patients with spinal metastases, with limited accepted toxicities.

Protein lysine lactylation (Kla) is a novel protein acylation reported in recent years, which plays an important role in the development of several diseases with pathologically elevated lactate levels, such as tumors. The concentration of lactate as a donor is directly related to the Kla level. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a workout pattern that has positive effects in many metabolic diseases, but the mechanisms by which HIIT promotes health are not yet clear. Lactate is the main metabolite of HIIT, and it is unknown as to whether high lactate during HIIT can induce changes in Kla levels, as well as whether Kla levels differ in different tissues and how time-dependent Kla levels are. In this study, we observed the specificity and time-dependent effects of a single HIIT on the regulation of Kla in mouse tissues. In addition, we aimed to select tissues with high Kla specificity and obvious time dependence for lactylation quantitative omics and analyze the possible biological targets of HIIT-induced Kla regulation. A single HIIT induces Kla in tissues with high lactate uptake and metabolism, such as iWAT, BAT, soleus muscle and liver proteins, and Kla levels peak at 24 h after HIIT and return to steady state at 72 h. Kla proteins in iWAT may affect pathways related to glycolipid metabolism and are highly associated with de novo synthesis. It is speculated that the changes in energy expenditure, lipolytic effects and metabolic characteristics during the recovery period after HIIT may be related to the regulation of Kla in iWAT.

Nitrobenzene poisoning is uncommon, with most cases occurring in the dye, paint, and other chemical industries. Nitrobenzene enters the body mainly through the skin, respiratory tract, and oral cavity. Nitrobenzene poisoning symptoms include hypermethemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, liver and kidney dysfunction, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, and toxic encephalopathy, which endanger people's lives. Therefore, we present a case of nitrobenzene poisoning caused by skin absorption, focusing on its clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes. A 58 years-old man presented to our department with confusion and cyanosis. He has a history of hypertension and cerebral infarction. The patient was diagnosed with moderate occupational acute benzene poisoning with nitro compounds. Symptomatic support, methylene blue, and other antioxidant treatments were commenced after diagnosis. After treatment, the patient's condition gradually improved, and he was discharged.

As an efficient and broad-spectrum soil fumigant, 1, 3-dichloropropene is widely used in the control of nematodes, soil pests, and plant pathogens. However, as a volatile chlorine-containing organic compound, 1, 3-dichloropropene is harmful to human health, although no deaths caused by inhalation of 1, 3-dichloropropene have been reported. This article describes the case of a 50-year-old man who died of acute renal failure and brain edema after inhaling 1, 3-dichloropropene at work. This case demonstrates that 1, 3-dichloropropene can be absorbed through the respiratory tract and that exposure to 1, 3-dichloropropene in a confined environment without any protective measures can cause death in humans.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most toxic gases to human life. Therefore, the effective monitoring of it down to ppb level is of great significance. Herein, a series of In2O3 nanofibers modified with Au or Pd species or simultaneous Au and Pd species have been prepared by electrospinning combined with a calcination process. The as-obtained samples are applied for the detection of CO. Gas-sensing investigations indicate that 2 at% Au and 2 at% Pd-co-modified In2O3 nanofibers exhibit the highest response (21.7) to 100 ppm CO at 180 °C, and the response value is ~8.5 times higher than that of pure In2O3 nanofibers. More importantly, the detection limit to CO is about 200 ppb with a response value of 1.23, and is obviously lower than that (6 ppm) of pure In2O3 nanofibers. In addition, the sensor also shows good stability within 19 days. These demonstrate that co-modifying In2O3 nanofibers with suitable amounts of Pd and Au species might be a meaningful strategy for the development of high-performance carbon monoxide gas sensors.

The acetone-sensing performance of BiFeO3 is related to structural phase transformation, morphology and band gap energy which can be modulated by rare-earth ions doping. In this work, Bi1-xErxFeO3 nanoparticles with different amounts of Er doping were synthesized via the sol-gel method. The mechanism of Er doping on acetone-sensing performance of Bi1-xErxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2) sensors was the focus of the research. The optimal working temperature of Bi0.9Er0.1FeO3 (300 °C) was decreased by 60 °C compared to BiFeO3 (360 °C). The Bi0.9Er0.1FeO3 sample demonstrated the optimal response to 100 ppm acetone (43.2), which was 4.8 times that of pure BFO at 300 °C. The primary reason, which enhances the acetone-sensing performance, could be the phase transformation induced by Er doping. The lattice distortions induced by phase transformation are favorable to increasing the carrier concentration and mobility, which will bring more changes to the hole-accumulation layer. Thus, the acetone-sensing performance of Bi0.9Er0.1FeO3 was improved.

Subsequently to the publication of the above paper, an interested reader drew to the authors' attention that the '1 µM/Invasion' and the '2.5 µM/Migration' panels shown in Fig. 3B on p. 1814 appeared to contain overlapping sections of data, such that they were potentially derived from the same original source, where these panels was intended to show the results from differently performed experiments. The authors have re­examined their original data, and realize that Fig. 3B was inadvertently assembled incorrectly; specifically, the '2.5 µM/Migration' panel was selected from the wrong data group. The revised version of Fig. 4, now containing the correct data for the '2.5 µM/Migration' experiment in Fig. 3B, is shown on the next page. Note that this error did not adversely affect either the results or the overall conclusions reported in this study. Short-term exposure to high levels of organic solvents, as well as long-term exposure to small doses, can damage the central nervous system, thereby leading to toxic encephalopathy. However, toxic encephalopathy caused by long-term inhalation of liquid sealant is rarely reported. This study describes the clinical data of a case of toxic encephalopathy caused by repeated inhalation of liquid sealants and discusses the pathophysiological characteristics and treatment of organic solvent toxic encephalopathy. This report aims to strengthen the understanding of this disease among clinical staff.

Skeletal muscle is the major effector organ for exercise. It has been proposed that VEGFB is significantly related to apoptosis in various cell types but not yet in skeletal muscle. We hypothesize that the decrease of VEGFB in skeletal muscle participates in the occurrence of skeletal muscle apoptosis and that exercise inhibits apoptosis by elevating the expression of VEGFB in skeletal muscle cells. Based on this hypothesis, we developed in vitro experiments to mimic the effect of exercise through electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) to observe the effect of EPS on apoptosis and the change in VEGFB expression in differentiated myotubes. In addition, we employed RNA interference to explore whether VEGFB is directly involved in the regulation of myotube apoptosis during EPS. Our results showed that exogenous VEGFB167 significantly inhibited C2C12 myotube apoptosis induced by TNF-α treatment and that endogenous VEGFB in differentiated C2C12 myotubes was significantly upregulated by EPS. In addition, EPS significantly changed the expression of the apoptotic indicators Bax and Bcl-2 at the mRNA level and downregulated the protein expression of cleaved caspase-3. The antiapoptotic effect of EPS weakened substantially as VEGFB in C2C12 myotubes was inhibited. Taken together, these results indicate that exercise-like EPS inhibits apoptosis by increasing the expression of C2C12 myotube-derived VEGFB.

In this work, SnO2 hollow microspheres functionalized with different incorporated amounts of Pt@Co3O4 complex catalyst were innovatively designed by using an MOF template. The results show that sensor based on the optimal incorporated amount of Pt@Co3O4 not only greatly enhances the response value of SnO2 to formaldehyde (Rair/Rformaldehyde = 4240 toward 100 ppm) but also decreases the low detection limit (50 ppb), which is quite outstanding compared with other SnO2-based formaldehyde sensors. Further analysis proves that the content of oxygen vacancy and chemisorbed oxygen and the catalytic effect of ultra-small Pt play the key roles in improving the formaldehyde sensing performance. Meanwhile, this present work demonstrates that oxide semiconductors functionalized with the derivatives of MOF templated catalysts may lead to the discovery of new material systems with outstanding sensing performance.
