The study aimed to evaluate the influence of ash doses on different substrates on the stem rooting of basil (Ocimum basilicum). The experiment was conducted in the area of core training and research at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, in Belém, used a completely randomized design, factorial scheme 2 x 5 consisting of the combinations of the factors substrate (carbonized rice husk and bark brown ground) and increase ash (5 mL and 10 mL of rice husk ash 5 mL and 10 mL of husk ash and brown bark no gray) with four repetitions. Each experimental unit consisted of 10 cuttings, a total of 400 cuttings. Was evaluated the characteristics percentage of rooting, number and length of roots. There was no significant interaction between the factors evaluated (substrate and ash). Among the characteristics evaluated the carbonized rice showed only differences in root length and root number, while the levels of ash showed only differences in rooting percentage. The study revealed that the dosages of ash had a positive effect on rooting of cuttings of basil, as well as the substrate prepared with rice hulls provided the best conditions for root development. Thus, the rice husk is an alternative, as well as presenting features suitable for rooting also has a low cost of acquisition, being within reach of many producers.

RESUMO

An anatomical study of the relationships between the coronal suture and the sulci of the convexity of the frontal lobe was accomplished in seven cephalic segments. The pre-central and central sulci are, respectively, 26,5 mm and 40,5 mm behind the bregma and 15,0 mm and 35,5 mm behind the pterion. The use of the coronal suture as point of reference, and especially, its relationship with the sulci of the lateral surface of the frontal lobe, allows to determine the projection on the cranium of the superficial cerebral lesions with the purpose to delimit the surgical access and to guide the approach to the cerebral convexity.

RESUMO

The knowledge of the superolateral surface brain anatomy is fundamental to localize and to approach the cerebral lesions. A literature review of the signs and landmarks for the identification of its sulci and gyri in computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging had been done. The combined use of these several signs makes possible the sulci and gyri identification and its cerebral lesions localization in almost all cases.

RESUMO

A morphological study, macro and microscopical, was made of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents. Congestive brain swelling occurred in 21 (17.5%) patients. Owing to the brain swelling that increases the brain volume, an increase of brain weight was also observed. Brain contusion was the most frequent lesion associated with congestive brain swelling (76.2%), while the intracranial haematomas were observed in almost half of the cases.

RESUMO

A morphological study, macro and microscopical, was made of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents. Burst lobes were identified in 12 (10.0%) of the patients. It occurred in the frontal lobe in 6 (50.0%) patients, in the temporal lobe in 2 (16.7%) and in both lobes in 4 (33.3%) patients. A skull fracture occurred in 8 (66.7%) patients and intracranial hypertension occurred in half of cases. Nine patients were admitted in coma and three patients died immediately after the road traffic accident. All cases of burst lobes were associated with diffuse axonal injury, which explains the severe alteration of consciousness observed at the patients' admission.

RESUMO

In our study, 300 pregnant women were screened for the presence of human parvovirus B19 IgG and IgM antibodies by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Overall, 253 (84.3%) were found to be IgG-positive and IgM-negative (IgG+gM ), 42 (14%) had neither IgG nor IgM antibodies (IgG /IgM ) and 5 (1.7%) were both IgM- and IgG-positive (IgG+/IgM+). Maternal serology was performed routinely for cytomegalovirus, rubella, toxoplasmosis and syphilis. All IgG /IgM and IgG+/IgM+ women were followed up till the time of delivery, venous blood sample being taken monthly from each one; one IgG /IgM mother seroconverted to IgG+/IgM and B19 DNA was detected by nested polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR) in her serum. All babies born to IgG+/IgM+ mothers (and from that who seroconverted) were IgG+IgM , no B19 DNA could be detected in their sera and no adverse effects were documented either by ultrasonographic examination or the detection of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein. While 5 of these mothers delivered normal children at term, one gave birth to a premature (low-weight) baby who developed severe anemia and had convulsions; this mother was found to have toxoplasma-specific IgM. As based on serial testing of sera, it is notable that B19 IgM may last up to six months. Our data indicates a low incidence rate of B19 infection in pregnancy in our region, at least during interepidemic periods. In addition, it suggests that recent B19 infection represents a low risk for the development of adverse fetal outcomes.

RESUMO

A morphological study, macro and microscopical, was made of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents. Parahipoccampal hernia, Duret haemorrhage and infarction in the medio-basal occipital lobe, clear evidence of raised intracranial pressure, occurred in 43 (35.8%) patients. The increased intracranial pressure from the head injury is caused by brain swelling and by intracranial haematomas. In this series 3 cases of extradural haematomas (7.0%), 9 of subdural haematomas (20.9%), 6 of intracerebral haematomas (14%), 6 of burst lobe (14%) and 9 of brain swelling (20.9%) were observed.

RESUMO

A morphological study, macro and microscopical, was made of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents. Contusions of the brain were identified in 67 (55.8%) of the patients. The contusions especially affected the orbital surfaces of the frontal lobes (27.8%) and the temporal poles (19.8%). The recent brain contusion was associated with a skull fracture in 70.1% of the cases and with a diffuse axonal injury in 89.5%. These can be explained by the association of contact and inertia from the road traffic accidents. Old contusions were identified in six patients (5.0%).

RESUMO

Seven cases of victims of road traffic accidents with extradural haematoma (EH) and diffuse axonal injury (DAI) are reported. Such cases are part of a total of 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents that were subjected to pathological study. The association of the two lesions occurred in 5.8% of the patients and all cases of EH were associated with DAI. The latter explains the immediate coma (absence of lucid interval) and the grave prognosis for all seven patients. It was noted that EH is relatively infrequent in road traffic accidents, but in such cases it is more severe since it is frequently associated with DAI and immediate coma.

RESUMO

This is a brief biography and analysis of Pavie's medical work, who at the beginning of our century, practiced medicine in the broad area of Minas Gerais (Brazil). As a consequence of his great professional activity and correspondence with European medical centres, he developed a highly sophisticated practice of medicine for the time, in a poor region far from any brazilian urban centres resources. The success of Pavie's innovative work became one of the first accounts of true modern medical pioneering in Brazil.

RESUMO

Nine children harboring subdural effusions were treated by subduro peritoneal shunt. These patients were followed-up by CT scans. The area of the subdural effusions was measured by quantitative morphology with a planimeter. With the surgical treatment, the subdural effusion disappeared completely or near completely in 8 patients. The patient's functional state were excellent in 4, good in 3 and bad in 2 in the postoperative follow-up. We aldo reviewed the literature as far as the pathophysiology and the treatment of the subdural effusions are concerned.

RESUMO

We describe four cases of the tumoral form of cerebral schistosomiasis mansoni. The patients had symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and focal neurological signs that varied according to the site of the lesion. Computerized tomography showed a hyperdense, enhancing lesion located in the cerebellum (2 patients), frontal lobe and thalamus (1 patient), and temporal subdural region (1 patient), with associated mass effects. The lesion was resected in three patients and a stereotactic biopsy was performed in one. Histopathologic specimens of all four patients revealed multiple schistosomal granulomas in various evolutive phases. Two of these patients differ from previously described cases; one because of the subdural location of the lesion, mimicking a meningioma, and the other one because two lesions were present.
