Out of the multiple vascular complications of diabetes, retinopathy is the easiest to diagnose and monitor as the examination of the eye fundus is an easy investigation to perform, does not require expensive medical equipment and can be repeated without any risk to the patient. The appearance of the retinal vessels, the optic nerve and the retina can provide useful information on the coronary and cerebral circulation, plasma lipid levels, renal function, and the quality of the arteries of the lower limbs. It is known that visual acuity changes variably depending on the macular alteration and may decrease when edema is installed in the macular region or is altered by the appearance of hemorrhages or the presence of foveolar neovascular tissues resulting from traction retinal detachment. In the absence of proper treatment, diabetes leads to blindness. The lesions that appear are not specific to diabetes, but by combining them they create a clinical picture characteristic of this disease.

AIM: Occlusal trauma causes major modifications of the coverage periodontium, which in turn reflect on the dental unit. The aim of the present study is to evaluate some of the morphological modifications occurred in the marginal periodontium surrounding teeth affected by occlusal trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fragments of marginal periodontium coming from 51 patients with occlusal trauma were processed using classical histological techniques (formalin fixation and paraffin embedment) and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), Masson's trichrome and anti-CD34 antibody immunostaining, in order to highlight the epithelial and connective tissue changes of gingival mucosa. A set of epithelial and connective tissue morphological parameters were assessed individually and based on three topographical criteria concerning the affected tooth. RESULTS: The epithelium and especially its superficial compartment presented changes depending on the tooth type and the dental arch. Epithelial thickness had the tendency to decrease as the fibrosis in both corium compartments and vascular density in the deep corium compartment were increasing. Leukoplakia present around the affected teeth but not always was related with the tooth type and was more obvious as the superficial compartment of the epithelium was thicker and as fibrosis was more reduced in the papillary compartment of the corium. Vascular density reduced when fibrosis process increased in the corium. CONCLUSIONS: Lesions determined by occlusal trauma and their topography can and are influencing locally the different structures of the surrounding periodontium.

Soft peri-implant tissues are important to ensure the integration of a dental implant, and information on their morphophysiology may explain some clinical failures. Through this study, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of peri-implant soft tissue, the morphological support being the one that can explain the different clinical situations. Thus, we sought to reconcile clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) aspects of soft peri-implant tissue, in patients who did not show clinical mobility or radiological signs of bone resorption four months after insertion of implants, some of them showing no clinical signs of inflammation. Immunohistochemically, we highlighted the cellular populations participating in the inflammatory process present in the peri-implant mucosa, in the two groups of patients. The IHC identification of these types of cells and the degree to which each of them was represented by the use of monoclonal antibodies can provide additional insight into the local response of peri-implant soft tissue in healing and osseointegration. This helps the clinician to improve the clinical success of dental implant treatment because the soft tissue surrounding the dental implant separates the implant from the oral cavity and makes a biological seal that prevents the development of the peri-implant pathology. Thus, the soft tissue surrounding the dental implants ensures the conditions of osseointegration and hence the long-term survival of an implant.

Lymphangiomas are enough rare benign congenital tumors of the lymphatic vessels, frequently encountered during childhood. They are found in the head and neck region, the isolated localization in the nasopharynx is very rare. We present the case of 54-year-old man admitted in the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Emergency University Hospital of Bucharest, Romania, with a nasopharynx tumor certificated by computed tomography (CT) scan with significant bleeding to a previous incisional biopsy temptation rising angiofibroma suspicion. We performed the radical surgical excision of mass by transoral approach. Postoperative bleeding imposed angiography with right internal maxillary artery embolization. Histopathological evaluation showed the diagnosis of lymphangioma. After three years, the patient is without recurrence.

RESUMO

The climate changes, which occurred during the last decades, put all living species in front of new challenges. Human biology is no exception to it, all tissues have to face new effects, with unpredictable consequences. Many cancers, mainly affecting the skin, but also many of the eye various structures diseases, have ultraviolet radiation as recognized causative agent. The aim of our work is to highlight the changes that can occur after exposure to ultraviolet radiations of soft tissues, including eye structures, by reviewing data from the scientific literature regarding the matter. Responsible for severe diseases, including cancer, ultraviolet negative effects on various soft tissues can be limited by better comprehension. Their knowledge can contribute to improving public health, by finding new preventive methods, which might represent the foundation of effective public health programs.

Oral cavity cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide, with an increased incidence in young adults, although there has been lately a decrease tendency in the incidence of this form of cancer. Lingual localization has a very high mortality and tends to be more aggressive becoming frequently metastatic at the regional lymph nodes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratin 18 (CK18) and the reactivity to GDF5 (CDMP-1), called the morphogenetic protein-1, cartilage-derived, in lingual squamous cell carcinoma and the correlation between the immunoreactivity of this panel of antibodies, and the clinical stage, the degree of differentiation and the invasion pattern. In this regard, we studied the immunohistochemical behavior of these markers in 15 cases of lingual squamous cell carcinoma. In our study, we observed the correlation of CK18 and GDF5 expression with the clinical stage, differentiation degree and invasion pattern, the highest levels of immunoreactivity being recorded in poorly differentiated forms, in high-level invasion patterns and in the most advanced stages. The markers used can become therapeutic targets, which could help increase the quality of life and life expectancy for these patients.
