RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Linezolid (LZD) plays an important role in the treatment of severe infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. Thrombocytopenia is regarded as one of the most common side effects of linezolid, which results from the destruction of platelets or myelosuppression. The study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the development of thrombocytopenia in Vietnamese patients. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on adult patients who received parenteral LZD therapy (1,200 mg/day) in at least 3 days between January 2020 and June 2021 at a tertiary referral hospital in Vietnam. Thrombocytopenia was defined as either a final platelet count of less than 100 G/L or a 25% decrease in platelet count from baseline. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to predict risk factors associated with LZD-induced thrombocytopenia. RESULTS: In the 208 patients included in the study, the average age was 69 and males accounted for 73.1%. LZD-induced thrombocytopenia occurred in 37% of patients. LZD-induced thrombocytopenia was significantly associated with shock (HR = 8.26, 95% CI 3.82 - 17.84, p < 0.001), baseline creatinine clearance (HR = 1.02, 95% CI [1.01 - 1.03], p = 0.002), and duration of LZD treatment of at least 14 days (HR = 4.45, 95% CI [1.83 - 11.05], p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that thrombocytopenia was fairly common in patients using linezolid. Shock, renal failure, and duration of linezolid therapy of at least 14 days were significant risk factors for the incidence of linezolid-induced thrombocytopenia.

RESUMO

Herein, we report the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel (E)-3-(3-oxo-4-substituted-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-6-yl)-N-hydroxypropenamides (4 a-i, 7 a-g) targeting histone deacetylases. Three human cancer cell lines were used to test the cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung cancer); inhibitory activity towards HDAC; anticancer activity; as well as their impact on the cell cycle and apoptosis. As a result, compounds 4 a-i bearing the alkyl substituents seemed to be less potent than the benzyl-containing compounds 7 a-g in all biological assays. Compounds 7 e-f were found to be the most active HDAC inhibitors with IC50 of 1.498±0.020 µM and 1.794±0.159 µM, respectively. In terms of cytotoxicity and anticancer assay, 7 e and 7 f also showed good activity with IC50 values in the micromolar range. In addition, the cell cycle and apoptosis of SW620 were affected by compound 7 f in almost a similar manner to that of reference compound SAHA. Docking assays were carried out for analysis the binding mode and selectivity of this compound toward 8 HDAC isoforms. Overall, our data confirmed that the inhibition of HDAC plays a pivotal role in their anticancer activity.

RESUMO

Spin injection using ferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature is a building block for the realization of spin-functional semiconductor devices. Nevertheless, this has been very challenging due to the lack of reliable room-temperature ferromagnetism in well-known group IV and III-V based semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature spin injection by using spin pumping in a BiSb/(Ga,Fe)Sb heterostructure, where (Ga,Fe)Sb is a ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) with high Curie temperature (TC) and BiSb is a topological insulator (TI). Despite the very small magnetization of (Ga,Fe)Sb at room temperature (45 emu/cc), we detected spin injection from (Ga,Fe)Sb by utilizing the large inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in BiSb. Our study provides the first demonstration of spin injection at room temperature from a FMS.

RESUMO

Aortoenteric fistula is one of the uncommon emergencies and is challenging to navigate for diagnostic testing. Here, we present a clinical case of an aortoduodenal fistula with primary etiology. A 73-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension was admitted to the hospital because of a 1-day history of melena. Ultrasound showed an abdominal aortic aneurysm sized (33 × 46) mm and a hematoma on the wall of the aorta. The patient underwent a gastrointestinal endoscopy with no bleeding point detected. However, the patient suddenly fell into a hemorrhagic shock on day 3 of admission. We rapidly performed fluid resuscitation, blood transfusion, a second gastrointestinal endoscopy, and a computed tomography scan of the abdomen with contrast injection that revealed a fistula from the abdominal aorta into the second segment of the duodenum. The patient was indicated for urgent endovascular aortic repair. Although this technique was successful with 3 abdominal aortic stents, the patient died due to multiorgan failure. Delayed diagnosis is the root cause of primary aortoduodenal fistula treatment failure, so it is important for clinicians to keep aortoduodenal fistula in mind as a possible cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in any patient.

RESUMO

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a clinicoradiologic entity characterized by seizure, headaches, visual symptoms, impaired consciousness, and vasogenic cerebral edema of occipital and parietal lobes of the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the diagnostic gold standard. The pathophysiology of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is still unknown, but it is thought to be closely related to several medical conditions including hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, immunosuppressive agents, transplantation, and sepsis. We report a rare case of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in patient with myasthenia gravis and sepsis. A 22-year-old male was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis combined with sepsis due to pneumonia. During his recovery, the patient suffered multiple generalized convulsions and subsequent loss of consciousness. On cranial MRI, the abnormalities were observed with hyperintense within the subcortical white matter of the temporal, parietal, and bilateral occipital lobes on T2-weighted and T2 FLAIR. Reversibility of the symptoms and characteristic imaging findings led us to a diagnosis of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Early recognition and management of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome as a cause of encephalopathy in patients with septicemia and myasthenia gravis is necessary to prevent secondary complications in this condition.

RESUMO

Pasteurella multocida is a facultative anaerobic and gram-negative bacteria. It lives in the upper airway of animals, especially dogs and cats. P. multocida infection commonly results in regional cellulitis, although septic shock complication is uncommon. Here, we report on a fatal case of septic shock developing from a natural knee joint infection.

RESUMO

An allergy to insect stings is one of the most frequent causes of anaphylactic reactions. Such reactions can be fatal, even on the first reaction, although it very rarely happens. The use of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) in refractory anaphylactic shock was previously described. We report a case of a 31-year-old female who presented with refractory anaphylactic shock after bee stings without the presence of cutaneous manifestations other than the rashes in her neck. The toxic component of bee venom and systemic allergic response plays a vital role in pathophysiology. She did not respond to conventional advanced life support, but following urgent VA ECMO, she survived neurologically intact. Despite an uncommon indication for anaphylaxis, ECMO support may be possible and effective in patients with refractory shock.

RESUMO

Mangrove forest plays a very important role for both ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation. In Vietnam, mangrove is mainly distributed in the Mekong delta. Recently, mangrove areas in this region decreased rapidly in both quality and quantity. The forest became bare, divided and scattered into many small patches, which was a major driver of ecosystem degradation. Without a quantitative method for effectively assessing mangrove health in the regional scale, the sustainably conserving mangrove is the challenge for the local governments. Remote sensing data has been widely used for monitoring mangrove distributions, while the characterization of spatial metrics is important to understand the underlying processes of mangrove change. The objectives of this study were to develop an approach to monitor mangrove health in Mui Ca Mau, Ca Mau province of Vietnam by utilizing satellite image textures to assess the mangrove patterns. The research result showed that mangrove areas increased double by 2015, but the forest had become more fragmented. We can be seen those changes in land use mainly come from land conversion from forest to shrimp farms, settlements areas and public constructions. The conserving existing mangrove forest in Mui Ca Mau should consider the relations between mangrove health and influencing factors indicated in the manuscript.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020 and since then it has spread to almost every country around the world. Vaccines against COVID-19 are considered an essential measure to curb this pandemic. However, side effects, including local and systemic reactions, after administering the COVID-19 vaccine have been defined, and some side effects have been reported. We present two cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after receiving the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (Oxford- AstraZeneca). Both cases were admitted to the 108 Military Central Hospital, Vietnam, and received plasmapheresis therapy with satisfactory recovery after treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Metformin is recommended as the first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to the American Diabetes Association. It is considered a safe medication with minimal adverse effects, with the most common being gastrointestinal. Metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is a rare but life-threatening complication. MALA usually occurs in patients with kidney dysfunction. However, it can still occur with preserved kidney function with the ingestion of a large dose of metformin. CASE REPORT A 66-year-old man with a significant medical history of type 2 diabetes mellitus presented after an intentional ingestion of a high dose of metformin (3000 mg/day). He was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and watery diarrhea lasting for 3 days. His initial laboratory findings were remarkable, with a serum creatinine level of 819 µmol/L. Arterial blood gas revealed severe lactic acidosis, with a pH of 6.94, HCO3⁻- of 3 mEq/L, anion gap of 48 mmol/L, and lactate level of 15 mmol/L. Emergent continuous renal replacement therapy was done. Two days later, his condition improved considerably, and the lactic acidosis was resolved entirely. He was discharged on day 11 of hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS MALA is rare but life-threatening complication of treatment with metformin. MALA should be considered when there is evidence of metformin ingestion and renal insufficiency in patients with lactic acidosis. The curative treatment of MALA is based on hemodialysis, but the main remedy is prevention, which requires patient compliance with taking metformin as prescribed.

RESUMO

Layered materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, are able to obtain new properties and functions through the modification of their crystal arrangements. In particular, ferromagnetism in polycrystalline MoS2 is of great interest because the corresponding nonmagnetic single crystals exhibit spontaneous spin splitting only through the formation of grain boundaries. However, no one has reported direct evidence of this unique phenomenon thus far. Herein, we demonstrate ferromagnetism modulation by an ultralow current density < 103 A/cm2 in 7.5-nm-thick polycrystalline MoS2, in which magnetoresistance shows three patterns according to the current intensity: wide dip, nondip and narrow dip structures. Since magnetoresistance occurs because of the interaction between the current of 4d electrons in the bulk and localized 4d spins in grain boundaries, this result provides evidence of the current modulation of ferromagnetism induced by grain boundaries. Our findings pave the way for the investigation of a novel method of magnetization switching with low power consumption for magnetic random access memories.

RESUMO

Background: The modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically Ill (mNUTRIC) score is a helpful tool to evaluate nutritional risk in critically ill patients. However, there is a lack of data on the relationship between mNUTRIC score and septic patients' outcomes. So, this study aims to validate the prognostic role of the mNUTRIC score and to compare the performances of mNUTRIC, APACHE II, SOFA, and SAPS 2 scores for mortality prediction in patients with sepsis. Methods: This prospective observational study was performed on 194 septic patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of 108 Military Central Hospital. Sepsis was defined based on the sepsis-3 definition. The mNUTRIC score was used to evaluate the nutritional status within 24 h of ICU admission. Baseline characteristics and clinical information were collected to calculate the mNUTRIC, APACHE II, SOFA, and SAPS 2 scores. The outcome was in-hospital mortality from all causes. Results: Nonsurvivors patients had a significantly higher median mNUTRIC score (6 vs. 4, P < 0.001). The mortality rate in the group with a NUTRIC score ≥5 was significantly higher than in the group with a NUTRIC score <5 (56.0% vs 10.2%; P < 0.001). The area under the ROC curves (AUC) for predicting the mortality of mNUTRIC was 0.79 (sensitivity 67.1% and specificity 81.0% (P < 0.001)). Compared with other severity scores in mortality prediction, AUC was 0.78 for APACHE II (sensitivity 84.9% and specificity 67.7%), 0.77 for SOFA score (sensitivity 76.7% and specificity 65.3%), and 0.73 for SAPS 2 (sensitivity 66.1%, specificity 77.7%). In the multivariate analysis, mNUTRIC score was associated with in-hospital mortality (HR, 2.00; 95% CI, 1.54 to 2.58; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study showed that the mNUTRIC score was similar to severity scores (APACHE II, SOFA, SAPS 2) in mortality prediction and was the independent mortality predictor in patients with sepsis.

RESUMO

Researchers investigated the modification of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface with Au overlayers and nanoparticles, which led to the change of various physical properties. However, no research is available to elucidate insights into the interaction of Au with the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 substrate. Therefore, this study is devoted to solving the question using density functional theory calculations. We also studied the optical properties of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system before and after the Au adsorption. We found that an additional optical peak occurs with significant intensity in the wavelength region of 600 nm to 1200 nm depending on the LaAlO3 film thickness. This peak is attributed to the increase in the hole states in the presence of Au adsorption with the increase in the LaAlO3 film thickness.

RESUMO

The detection of volatile organic compounds by gas sensors is of great interest for environmental quality monitoring and the early-stage and noninvasive diagnosis of diseases. Experiments found hexane, toluene, aniline, butanone, acetone, and propanol gases in the exhaled breath of patients suffering from COVID-19, lung cancer, and diabetes. However, no studies are available to systematically elucidate the selectivity of these gases on nanosheets of zinc oxide for chemiresistive and direct thermoelectric gas sensors. Therefore, this work performed the elucidation by studying the electronic, electrical, and thermal properties of the bilayered ZnO nanosheets with polar (0001) and non-polar (112̄0) surfaces under the adsorption of the gases. The interaction between the gases and the nanosheets belongs to two groups: electrostatic attraction and charge exchange. The second one occurs due to the peak resonance of the same type of orbitals between the substrates and the gases along the surface normal and the first one for the other cases. The characteristics of the Seebeck coefficient exhibited distinct selectivity of butanone and acetone.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a neglected disease in Vietnam. Until now, there has been limited knowledge about risk factors of this disease in Vietnam. The study was carried out to identify agricultural and behavioral factors associated with the transmission of leptospirosis in Vietnam. METHODS: This matched retrospective hospital-community-based case-control study was conducted from 1 October 2018 to 31 October 2019. We recruited cases from 11 selected government hospitals in three provinces of Vietnam, while controls were selected from the same communes of cases and matched by age (± 2 years) and sex. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were applied to determine confirmed cases, while only MAT was used to identify controls with a single high MAT titer < 1:100. RESULTS: 504 participants (252 cases and 252 controls) were identified. Cultivating (OR 2.83, CI 1.38-5.79), animal farming (OR 8.26, CI 2.24-30.52), pig owners (OR 10.48, CI 5.05-21.73), cat owners (OR 2.62, CI 1.49-4.61) and drinking unboiled water (OR 1.72, CI 1.14 -2.59, p = 0.010) were significantly associated with human leptospirosis in Vietnam. Hand washing after farming/ gardening (OR 0.57, CI 0.38-0.86, p = 0.007) and bathing after farming, gardening, contact with cattle and poultry (OR 0.33, CI 0.19-0.58, p = 0.000) were determined as protective factors for this disease. CONCLUSIONS: In short, the case-control study has revealed the risks in agricultural and animal practices and protective behavioral factors related to human leptospirosis in Vietnam. The findings suggested promotion of communication and health education programs targeting health behaviors in daily life and agricultural practices. Using personal protective equipment such as gowns, gloves, and boots during agricultural practices, especially cultivating and animal farming, is most recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, this study is the first report on the seroprevalence of human leptospirosis and its epidemiological profile in 3 different geographical and climatic zones of Vietnam. METHODOLOGY: A hospital-based surveillance in 11 public hospitals in 3 provinces in Vietnam enrolled 3,815 patients with suspected leptospirosis. Two consecutive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay IgM and a single microscopic aggregation test were applied at a 1:100 to 1:800 dilution for probable or confirmed cases. RESULTS: The findings showed that of the 3,815 suspected cases, 68 (1.8%) were Leptospira-confirmed and 248 (6.5%) probable cases, whereas more than a third were positive for acute ELISA-IgM sera. Furthermore, 20 different serovars were found, of which Wolffi (14.2%), Hebdomadis (13.8%), and Icterohaemorrhagiae (12.6%) were the most predominant. The ratio of probable and confirmed cases of leptospirosis between females and males was 1.4:1, and their clinical manifestation was not specific. Cases were more likely to be detected in groups that are farmers, pet raising or livestock farming, of working age, practicing either wading in mud or walking barefoot, or exposed to heavy rainfall. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of human leptospirosis has indicated fairly high seroprevalence and diversity of Leptospira serovars circulating in all studied geographical zones in Vietnam. The findings suggest an imperative need for effective measures of disease prevention, especially in high-risk groups.

RESUMO

Understanding the effects of phase transition, phase coexistence, and surface magnetism on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a magnetic system is essential to manipulate the spin to charge current conversion efficiency for spincaloritronic applications. We aim to elucidate these effects by performing a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of the LSSE in biphase iron oxide (BPIO = α-Fe2O3 + Fe3O4) thin films grown on Si (100) and Al2O3 (111) substrates. A combination of a temperature-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and electrical resistivity measurements show that the contribution of the ANE from the BPIO layer is negligible in comparison to the intrinsic LSSE in the Si/BPIO/Pt heterostructure, even at room temperature. Below the Verwey transition of the Fe3O4 phase, the total signal across BPIO/Pt is dominated by the LSSE. Noticeable changes in the intrinsic LSSE signal for both Si/BPIO/Pt and Al2O3/BPIO/Pt heterostructures around the Verwey transition of the Fe3O4 phase and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Morin transition of the α-Fe2O3 phase are observed. The LSSE signal for Si/BPIO/Pt is found to be almost 2 times greater than that for Al2O3/BPIO/Pt; however, an opposite trend is observed for the saturation magnetization. Magnetic force microscopy reveals the higher density of surface magnetic moments of the Si/BPIO film in comparison to the Al2O3/BPIO film, which underscores the dominant role of interfacial magnetism on the LSSE signal and thereby explains the larger LSSE for Si/BPIO/Pt.

RESUMO

Topological materials, such as topological insulators (TIs), have great potential for ultralow power spintronic devices, thanks to their giant spin Hall effect. However, the giant spin Hall angle (θSH > 1) is limited to a few chalcogenide TIs with toxic elements and low melting points, making them challenging for device integration during the silicon Back-End-of-Line (BEOL) process. Here, we show that by using a half-Heusler alloy topological semi-metal (HHA-TSM), YPtBi, it is possible to achieve both a giant θSH up to 4.1 and a high thermal budget up to 600 °C. We demonstrate magnetization switching of a CoPt thin film using the giant spin Hall effect of YPtBi by current densities lower than those of heavy metals by one order of magnitude. Since HHA-TSM includes a group of three-element topological materials with great flexibility, our work opens the door to the third-generation spin Hall materials with both high θSH and high compatibility with the BEOL process that would be easily adopted by the industry.

RESUMO

Spin orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching of ferromagnets with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy has a great potential for the next generation non-volatile magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM). It requires a high performance pure spin current source with a large spin Hall angle and high electrical conductivity, which can be fabricated by a mass production technique. In this work, we demonstrate ultrahigh efficient and robust SOT magnetization switching in fully sputtered BiSb topological insulator and perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt multilayers. Despite fabricated by the magnetron sputtering instead of the laboratory molecular beam epitaxy, the topological insulator layer, BiSb, shows a large spin Hall angle of θSH = 10.7 and high electrical conductivity of σ = 1.5 × 105 Ω-1 m-1. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of BiSb topological insulator for implementation of ultralow power SOT-MRAM and other SOT-based spintronic devices.
