RESUMO

Dietary crude protein and dry matter digestibility are among the major factors limiting feed intake and weight gain of cattle grazing native and improved pastures in the subtropics of Northern Australia during the dry season. Incorporating a suitable legume into grasses improves pasture quality and cattle weight gain, but only a limited number of legume pastures can establish and persist in cracking clay soils. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Desmanthus inclusion in buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) pastures on the plasma metabolite profile and growth performance of grazing beef cattle during the dry season. We hypothesised that backgrounding steers on buffel grass-Desmanthus mixed pastures would elicit significant changes in plasma glucose, bilirubin, creatinine, non-esterified fatty acids and ß-hydroxybutyrate, resulting in higher liveweight gains than in steers on buffel grass only pastures. Four hundred tropical composite steers were assigned to buffel grass only (n = 200) or buffel grass oversown with Desmanthus (11.5% initial sward dry matter) pastures (n = 200) and grazed for 147 days during the dry season. Desmanthus accounted for 6.2% sward dry matter at the end of grazing period. Plasma metabolites results showed that changes in ß-hydroxybutyrate, creatinine, bilirubin, glucose and non-esterified fatty acids were within the expected normal range for all the steers, indicating that with or without Desmanthus inclusion in the diet of grazing steers, animal health status was not compromised. It was also evident that Desmanthus inclusion in buffel grass pastures had no impact on the plasma metabolite profile, liveweight and daily weight gain of grazing steers. Therefore, our tested hypothesis of higher changes in plasma metabolite profile and higher liveweight gains due to backgrounding on low-level buffel grass-Desmanthus mixed pastures does not hold.

RESUMO

This paper describes a coherent electro-optic circuit architecture that generates a frequency comb consisting of N spatially separated orders using a generalised Mach-Zenhder interferometer (MZI) with its N × 1 combiner replaced by an optical N × N Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Advantage may be taken of the tight optical path-length control, component and circuit symmetries and emerging trimming algorithms offered by photonic integration in any platform that offers linear electro-optic phase modulation such as LiNbO3, silicon, III-V or hybrid technology. The circuit architecture subsumes all MZI-based RF photonic circuit architectures in the prior art given an appropriate choice of output port(s) and dimension N although the principal application envisaged is phase correlated subcarrier generation for all optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. A transfer matrix approach is used to model the operation of the architecture. The predictions of the model are validated by simulations performed using an industry standard software tool. Implementation is found to be practical.

RESUMO

An improved coherent optical receiver architecture that compensates for a random drift in the state of polarization (SOP) of both the signal and the local oscillator (LO) is presented for the first time. The proposed architecture comprises two conventional coherent optical receiver front-ends in tandem, where the SOP of the LO is first divided into its two orthogonal components and then distributed to each coherent optical receiver front-end module. Two distinct methods of polarization diversity recovery of the modulation based on the MRC technique and an eigenvalue-eigenvector decomposition of the covariance matrix have been used to effectively recover the transmitted signal. The concept is validated by numerical simulations, where a differential quadrature phase-shift keyed (DQPSK) modulated signal with a random time-varying SOP is first generated. After its mixing with a LO also possessing a random time-varying SOP, the algorithms that have been developed are provided with eight input variables to be digitally processed. The constellation diagrams corresponding to the recovered DQPSK modulation obtained using the two polarization diversity methods are presented.

RESUMO

A novel photonic integrated circuit is proposed that, using an RF source, generates at its output ports the same magnitude but opposite sign high order single optical side bands of a suppressed optical carrier. A single stage parallel Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) and a two-stage series parallel MZM architecture are described and their relative merits discussed. A transfer matrix method is used to describe the operation of the circuits. The theoretical analysis is validated by computer simulation. As an illustration of a prospective application, it is shown how the circuit may be used as a key element of an optical transmission system to transport radio signals over fibre for wireless access; generating remotely a mm-wave carrier modulated by digital IQ data. A detailed calculation of symbol error rate is presented to characterise the system performance. The circuit may be fabricated in any integration platform offering a suitable phase modulator circuit element such as LiNbO(3), Silicon, and III-V or hybrid technology.

RESUMO

A dual-function photonic integrated circuit for microwave photonic applications is proposed. The circuit consists of four linear electro-optic phase modulators connected optically in parallel within a generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer architecture. The photonic circuit is arranged to have two separate output ports. A first port provides frequency up-conversion of a microwave signal from the electrical to the optical domain; equivalently single-side-band modulation. A second port provides tunable millimeter wave carriers by frequency octo-tupling of an appropriate amplitude RF carrier. The circuit exploits the intrinsic relative phases between the ports of multi-mode interference couplers to provide substantially all the static optical phases needed. The operation of the proposed dual-function photonic integrated circuit is verified by computer simulations. The performance of the frequency octo-tupling and up-conversion functions is analyzed in terms of the electrical signal to harmonic distortion ratio and the optical single side band to unwanted harmonics ratio, respectively.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a split-contact corrugated ridge waveguide InGaAsP distributed feedback laser at 1560 nm. The laser cavity has been defined with uniform third-order gratings etched along the sidewalls of the ridge waveguide. The gratings were fabricated using a standard I-line stepper lithography technique along with an inductively coupled reactive ion-etching process. Stable single-mode operation has been achieved with side-mode suppression ratios ≥50 dB, output powers ≥7 mW, a wavelength tuning range ≥2.3 nm, and narrow linewidths (≤140 kHz) for different biasing conditions, with a minimum of 70 kHz. The effect of p-contact partition on device performance is also studied.

RESUMO

We report on the design and characterization of a re-growth free InGaAsP/InP multiple quantum well two-electrode laterally coupled distributed feedback (LC-DFB) lasers. Third-order surface etched gratings have been defined on the ridge sidewalls along the laser cavity by means of stepper lithography. The lasers oscillate in single-mode around 1560 nm with high side mode suppression ratios (>52 dB), a wavelength tuning (≥ 3nm), an output power (≥ 6 mW), and narrow linewidth (<170 kHz) under various current injection ranges at room temperature. A minimum linewidth of 94 kHz has been recorded for 1500 µm-long two-electrode LC-DFB laser while providing non-uniform current injection through the two electrodes. The effect of the width of the inter-electrode gap on these different performance measures is also studied.

A broadband and low-polarization-sensitive multi-quantum well semiconductor optical amplifier with an asymmetric structure is reported for operation in the E-band wavelength range. A gain peak of 20 dB for a bandwidth of more than 50 nm is measured for both TE and TM polarizations. A maximum polarization sensitivity of 3 dB is measured for a broad wavelength range from 1340 to 1440 nm.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a new type of waveguide multiplexer device designed for silicon photonics, with a crosstalk level as low as -35 dB and an operational wavelength range of 300 nm. A compact device footprint of only 100 × 160 µm2 offers an excellent potential for integration with other silicon nanophotonic circuits.

RESUMO

We report on the experimental demonstration and analysis of a new waveguide principle using subwavelength gratings. Unlike other periodic waveguides such as line-defects in a 2D photonic crystal lattice, a subwavelength grating waveguide confines the light as a conventional index-guided structure and does not exhibit optically resonant behaviour. Subwavelength grating waveguides in silicon-on-insulator are fabricated with a single etch step and allow for flexible control of the effective refractive index of the waveguide core simply by lithographic patterning. Experimental measurements indicate a propagation loss as low as 2.1 dB/cm for subwavelength grating waveguides with negligible polarization and wavelength dependent loss, which compares favourably to conventional microphotonic silicon waveguides. The measured group index is nearly constant n(g) ~1.5 over a wavelength range exceeding the telecom C-band.

RESUMO

We report on the design, simulation and experimental demonstration of a new type of waveguide crossing based on subwavelength gratings in silicon waveguides. We used 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations to minimize loss, crosstalk and polarization dependence. Measurement of fabricated devices show that our waveguide crossings have a loss as low as -0.023 dB/crossing, polarization dependent loss of < 0.02 dB and crosstalk <-40 dB.

RESUMO

We use subwavelength gratings (SWGs) to engineer the refractive index in microphotonic waveguides, including practical components such as input couplers and multiplexer circuits. This technique allows for direct control of the mode confinement by changing the refractive index of a waveguide core over a range as broad as 1.6-3.5 by lithographic patterning. We demonstrate two experimental examples of refractive index engineering, namely, a microphotonic fiber-chip coupler with a coupling loss as small as -0.9dB and minimal wavelength dependence and a planar waveguide multiplexer with SWG nanostructure, which acts as a slab waveguide for light diffracted by the grating, while at the same time acting as a lateral cladding for the strip waveguide. This yields an operation bandwidth of 170nm for a device size of only approximately 160microm x100microm.

RESUMO

We report on several new types of sub-wavelength grating (SWG) gradient index structures for efficient mode coupling in high index contrast slab waveguides. Using a SWG, an adiabatic transition is achieved at the interface between silicon-on-insulator waveguides of different geometries. The SWG transition region minimizes both fundamental mode mismatch loss and coupling to higher order modes. By creating the gradient effective index region in the direction of propagation, we demonstrate that efficient vertical mode transformation can be achieved between slab waveguides of different core thickness. The structures which we propose can be fabricated by a single etch step. Using 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations we study the loss, polarization dependence and the higher order mode excitation for two types (triangular and triangular-transverse) of SWG transition regions between silicon-on-insulator slab waveguides of different core thicknesses. We demonstrate two solutions to reduce the polarization dependent loss of these structures. Finally, we propose an implementation of SWG structures to reduce loss and higher order mode excitation between a slab waveguide and a phase array of an array waveguide grating (AWG). Compared to a conventional AWG, the loss is reduced from -1.4 dB to < -0.2 dB at the slab-array interface.

RESUMO

We propose an original diffraction grating demultiplexer device with a very small footprint, designed for the silicon-on-insulator waveguide platform. The wavelength dispersive properties are provided by a second-order diffraction grating designed to be lithographically defined and etched in the sidewall of a curved Si waveguide. The grating is blazed to maximize the -1st order diffraction efficiency. The diffracted light is coupled into the silicon slab waveguide via an impedance matching subwavelength grating gradient index antireflective interface. The waveguide is curved in order to focus the light onto the Rowland circle, where different wavelengths are intercepted by different receiver waveguides. The phase errors were substantially reduced using an apodized design with a chirped grating, which assures a constant effective index along the grating length. The simulated crosstalk is -30 dB. The device has 15 channels with a spacing of 25 nm, thus a broadband operational bandwidth of 375 nm. Its performance approaches the diffraction limit. The layout size is 90 microm x 140 microm, which is the smallest footprint yet reported for a mux/dmux device of a similar performance.

RESUMO

We propose a new waveguide resonator device with a mirror cavity and a multimode interference (MMI) coupler. We present simulation results for the silicon wire MMI coupler with suppressed reflections and its use as a coupling element in the resonator cavity, built on the silicon-on-insulator waveguide platform. Tapering structures used in the reflection suppression were optimized, and the wavelength dependency of a conventional MMI was compared to that of the MMI with reflection suppression. Equations relating the power transfer of the two-mirror MMI-coupled resonator and quality factor were derived. The device was also studied using finite difference time domain simulation by both pulse and continuous wave excitation. The resonator does not require bend waveguides, it has the advantages of having no bend loss and a compact layout. The resonator device has a very small footprint of 3 mum x 30 mum, and a quality factor of 516.

RESUMO

The effective medium theory is a useful approach for investigating the electromagnetic wave propagation in periodic multilayer slabs. It allows accurate computation of transmission and reflection spectra as well as of phase and group velocities. In this paper we derive an exact analytical expression for the energy velocity of a one-dimensional finite photonic crystal based on the effective medium approach. It accounts for the multiple reflections within the structure which results in the characteristic oscillations of the transmission spectrum. Our analytical expression holds for an arbitrary refractive index contrast and goes beyond the limits of the standard homogenization method. In order to validate our approach, results obtained by using the all-frequency effective energy velocity have been compared to those obtained using the transfer matrix method.
