RESUMO

Convalescent plasma therapy has gained worldwide notoriety since its inception as a form of soul treatment for terminally ill patients. This study investigates the link between knowledge, attitude, and practice of plasma donation while simultaneously probing the moderative role of age and gender in this context. Method: A cross-sectional study was undertaken in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on COVID-19-recovered patients (coronavirus disease 2019). In all, 383 persons were chosen using simple random sampling. A prestructured questionnaire was first validated and then used as a tool for data collection. jMetrik version 4.1.1 and SPSS version 26 were used to enter and analyze the data. Reliability analysis, hierarchal regression, and logistic regression analysis were applied. Results: A total of 85.1% and 58.2% of 383 individuals had a favorable attitude and sufficient knowledge toward plasma donation, respectively. Plasma donation was observed in 109 (28.5%) of the individuals. Plasma donation practice was shown to be strongly related to plasma donation attitude [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=4.48; P<0.05] and knowledge (AOR=3.78; P<0.001). Females who had more plasma donation knowledge and attitude tend to donate more compared to males. However, no interactional effect of gender×knowledge and attitude, and age×knowledge and attitude was found with plasma donation practice. Conclusion: Plasma donation was uncommon, even though the majority of individuals had a good mindset and were well-informed. Fear of getting a health problem was linked to the decreased practice.

RESUMO

Introduction: Organ donation is the act of removing an organ or tissue from a donor and transplanting the said organ/tissue to a recipient. Despite being the only definitive treatment for end-organ failure, there is a lot of hesitation surrounding the practice of organ donation. Even among medical students, who are more aware of the benefits of organ donation than the general public, this reluctance is widespread. Therefore, we conducted this research to determine the basis of this skepticism, so that the root causes can be identified and eradicated. Our research sought to ascertain the overall attitudes of Rawalpindi Medical University, Pakistan's students towards organ donation, the associated factors that influenced this attitude (religious devotion, gender, age, year of study) and the reasons for the hesitance. Methods: A cross-sectional study targeting the students of first to final year MBBS was conducted at Rawalpindi Medical University, Pakistan in the year 2022. The sample size was calculated using OpenEpi software, and came out to be 292. The students enrolled at Rawalpindi Medical University during the year 2021-2022 were made a part of the study. A self-structured questionnaire that was developed after substantial research was used to collect the data using a non-random convenience sample technique. Chi Square test was used to determine significance after data analysis using SPSS-22. Results: A total of 290 students participated in the study, 58 from each year. All of the participants were Muslim. A very strong correlation was found between high devoutness and willingness towards organ donation (p = 7.4252E-13). Only 9/290 (3%) of people in Pakistan have joined The Transplantation Society of Pakistan; the main cause of this low ratio is that very few people were aware that such a group even existed (according to 62% of the responders). The mistrust of doctors and the belief that appropriate efforts would not be done to resuscitate patients who have signed up for organ donation is a significant factor in the anxiety surrounding organ donation. Conclusions: There are several reasons why people are reluctant to donate their organs, including a lack of understanding of religious perspectives on the subject, mistrust of medical professionals and medical administration, and general public ignorance. We can make a significant progress toward closing the gap between the demand for and supply of organ donations if these problems are remedied. The most effective strategy to stop organ trafficking is through organ donation. Through seminars, conversations, and workshops, we need to raise awareness about organ donation.

RESUMO

Introduction: Neonatal mortality remains a significant challenge not only to the world, but especially to a developing country like Pakistan. It can be majorly attributed to the sub-par healthcare, insufficient and under-recognised community health workers, and the lack of knowledge of proper newborn care on the part of the parents. This study targets the level of knowledge of the mothers and the services provided by community health care workers as the main factors determining neonatal care. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the OBS (obstetrics) wards of Hospitals affiliated with Rawalpindi Medical University from January 2022 to June 2022. The sample size was 138. Data was collected by one-on-one interviews, using a standardized USAID Community Health Worker Assessment and Improvement Matrix questionnaire. Data analysis was done using SPSS v28. Chi-square test was applied to check for significance. Results: Out of the total 138 participants, 47.8% (n = 66/138) were between the ages of 21-25. Results showed that women between the ages of 21-25 (P = 0.000058) and women who had their first child between the ages of 23-27 had good knowledge about neonatal care. 45% (n = 62/138) of the participants had poor knowledge of neonatal care, whereas 55% (n = 76/138) had good knowledge (P = 0.000002). As for the role of community health workers, only 20-30% of the participants were being provided with their services; hence their performance was not found to be adequate. Conclusions: The world of medicine is moving rapidly toward a new framework of the health systems in which the real foundation will be based on what actually takes place in the community, therefore, community health workers can play an important role in improving maternal and neonatal care. Family-centered care, appropriate age of first conception and motherhood, and proper guidance to first-time parents can ensure significant improvement in neonatal care in the future.

RESUMO

Background and objective Urolithiasis is defined as the presence of calculi in the urinary tract. Multiple studies have shown that urinary tract stones are one of the most common incidental findings in medical imaging. These stones are potentially dangerous and can cause severe impairment to renal function if they remain undiagnosed for a long time. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of incidentally detected urolithiasis in patients undergoing abdominopelvic CT scans. Materials and methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, which involved 721 patients selected by consecutive non-randomized sampling. The study population included patients who underwent an abdominopelvic CT scan in the radiology department of a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan. Patients aged below 10 years and those above 90 years were excluded from the study. Patients undergoing kidney, ureter, and bladder (KUB) scan for urolithiasis-associated symptoms and those with already known urolithiasis were also excluded. The data were recorded in a predesigned pro forma and analyzed with SPSS Statistics version 20.00 (IBM, Armonk, NY). Results A total of 721 patients underwent an abdominopelvic CT scan during the six months from July to December in the radiology department of the hospital. Out of these, 336 (46.6%) were males, and 385 (53.4%) were females. Incidental stones were found in 20 of these patients. Among these 20 stone formers, 11 were males, and nine were females. Out of them, six had stones in the right kidney, eight in the left kidney, and four patients had bilateral stones. The remaining two patients had stones in their ureters. In most cases, stones were found in lower poles as compared to the mid pole and upper pole of the kidneys. Conclusion The prevalence of incidentally detected urolithiasis was found to be 2.8% in this study. Its frequency was much higher in males (3.27%) compared to females (2.33%). Most of the stones were found in the kidneys whereas no stone was detected in the urinary bladder.

RESUMO

Land use and land cover changes (LULCC) significantly affect the climate at regional and global levels through different biogeophysical and biogeochemical processes. However, the effects of biogeophysical aspects of LULCC on climate have been often ignored, which may overestimate the biogeochemical effects on climate change. Thus, understanding the biogeophysical influence of land use changes on climate change in future potential scenarios is crucial. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the mechanism and land use change impacts on future climate under different scenarios through changes in underlying surface and surface energy balance. In order to fill this research gap, three simulations are performed by Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model for the year 2010-2030 under Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario, Rapid Economic Growth (REG) scenario, and Coordinated Environmental Sustainability (CES) scenario to evaluate the influence of future LULCC on temperature projections for the Punjab province in Pakistan. Results show that land use conversions under three scenarios induce overall climate cooling in the region. The decrease in annual average temperature in CES scenario (- 0.02 °C) is slightly greater than that in BAU and REG scenarios (- 0.01 °C). The responses of temperature to future LULCC vary in different months in all scenarios, with greater responses in warmer months, causing climate cooling. In each scenario, the response of temperature is found to be sensitive to different land transitions. The findings of the study can be a reference for policy makers, researchers, and development practitioners in their pursuit to understand the effects of land use change on climate.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The vagueness surrounding "learning style-teaching mode mismatch" makes its effects uncertain. This study tried to tackle that controversy by comparing and assessing the effect of different learning styles on performance in physiology examination when teaching mode was somewhat different than learning preferences of the 2nd year medical students. METHODS: A total of 102 2nd year medical students participated in this study. Honey and Mumford learning style questionnaire was used to categorize the participants into one of the four learning styles (activist, reflector, theorist, and pragmatist). Many teaching modes were used in the medical college. The first professional theory and practical physiology scores of these 102 students of University of Health Sciences were obtained online. Learning styles were compared with physiology scores and age using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc statistical analysis and between males and females by using Chi-square test. RESULTS: Pragmatists had the lowest total physiology score (P < 0.001), while theorists had the highest total physiology scores (P < 0.001). Activists and reflectors had scores in between pragmatists and theorists, and there was no statistical difference between these two styles of learning (P = 0.9). No student scored below 60%. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the effect of moderate teaching-learning mismatch is different for different learners. Theorists excelled as they had the highest physiology score, while pragmatists lagged in comparison. Reflectors and activists performed better than pragmatists but were worse than theorists. Despite this, none of the students scored below 60%. This shows that a moderate learning style-teaching mode mismatch is not harmful for learning.
