RESUMO

In English Medium Instruction (EMI), one of the biggest challenges is reportedly the teachers' own lack of English language proficiency. Helping teachers to improve their proficiency while learning about pedagogy is critical to achieving reasonable success in EMI. This article is contextualized in an English language teacher education program conducted in Tunisia. Specifically, I zoom in on a training task that had trainees reading an academic textbook and posting takeaways on an asynchronous platform over a four-week period. The corpus, comprising 50 journal entries produced by five teacher trainees, was analyzed, first using automated tools for natural language processing and then through human coding, for a combination of quantitative and qualitative perspectives, and with a view to deriving a comprehensive understanding of learning as manifested on multiple levels - psychological, cognitive, and linguistic. Results show impressive learning gains both in content and language. I conclude by discussing the findings and implications for EMI.

RESUMO

The regular accumulation of nanoparticles in the liver makes them hepatotoxic and decreases the circulation time, thus reducing their therapeutic effect. Resolving this problem will be significant in improving bioavailability and reducing side effects. In this study, we reduced the phagocytosis of epirubicin (EPI)-loaded folic acid-conjugated pullulan acetate (FPA/EPI) nanoparticles by Kupffer cells (KCs) through internalization and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) signal pathway inhibitors, thus allowing development of FPA/EPI nanoparticles as a nanodrug delivery system (NDDS) based on our previous study. FPA/EPI nanoparticles were prepared by the dialysis method. Rat KCs were preincubated with the following individual or compound inhibitors: chlorpromazine (CPZ), nystatin (NY), colchicine (Col), amiloride (AMR), and pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC). Dose- and time-dependent cellular uptake effects of inhibitors on FPA/EPI nanoparticles were determined through fluorometry. The cytokine levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), and IL-6 were tested in culture supernatants by bead-based multiplex flow cytometry. The uptake study demonstrated that inhibitors had an obvious inhibitory effect (P<0.05 or P<0.01), with NY, AMR and Col all showing time-dependent inhibitory effects. PDTC + NY had the strongest inhibitory effect, with an uptake rate of 14.62%. The levels of the three proinflammatory cytokines were changed significantly by the compound inhibitors. TNF-α was significantly inhibited (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but IL-1ß and IL-6 showed smaller decreases. These results suggested that clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis were the main routes via which nanoparticles entered KCs and that the NF-kB signal pathway was very important too. In summary, multiple mechanisms, including clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis, contribute to cytokine production in macrophages following exposure to folic acid-conjugated pullulan acetate nanoparticles. Thus, the endocytosis inhibition strategy has great potential for improving therapy and reducing toxicity of an NDDS in the treatment of cancer.

RESUMO

We report that propagation loss of optical waveguides based on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material platform can be greatly reduced. Our simulations show that the loss, including SiO2 absorption and substrate leakage, but no scattering loss, is 0.024 and 0.53 dB/cm in the deep mid-infrared at 4.8 and 7.1 µm wavelengths, where the material absorption in SiO2 is 100 and 1000 dB/cm, respectively. The loss becomes negligible, compared to scattering loss in Si waveguides. This is enabled by using the TE10 mode in a pedestal waveguide. We also show that the TE10 mode can be excited in the proposed waveguide by the fundamental mode with a coupling efficiency of >94%. Low propagation loss, high coupling efficiency, and fabrication-friendly design would make it promising for practical use of SOI devices in the deep mid-infrared.

RESUMO

Ge-on-Si is an attractive material platform for mid-IR broadband sources on a chip because of its wide transparency window, high Kerr nonlinearity and CMOS compatibility. We present a low-loss Ge-on-Si waveguide with flat and low dispersion from 3 to 11 µm, which enables a coherent supercontinuum from 2 to 12 µm, generated using a sub-ps pulsed pump. We show that 700-fs pump pulses with a low peak power of 400 W are needed to generate such a wide supercontinuum, and the waveguide length is around 5.35 mm.

RESUMO

Research on two-dimensional designer optical structures, or metasurfaces, has mainly focused on controlling the wavefronts of light propagating in free space. Here, we show that gradient metasurface structures consisting of phased arrays of plasmonic or dielectric nanoantennas can be used to control guided waves via strong optical scattering at subwavelength intervals. Based on this design principle, we experimentally demonstrate waveguide mode converters, polarization rotators and waveguide devices supporting asymmetric optical power transmission. We also demonstrate all-dielectric on-chip polarization rotators based on phased arrays of Mie resonators with negligible insertion losses. Our gradient metasurfaces can enable small-footprint, broadband and low-loss photonic integrated devices.

RESUMO

GeSbS ridge waveguides have recently been demonstrated as a promising mid - infrared platform for integrated waveguide - based chemical sensing and photodetection. To date, their nonlinear optical properties remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we characterize the nonlinear optical properties of GeSbS glasses, and show negligible nonlinear losses at 1.55 µm. Using self - phase modulation experiments, we characterize a waveguide nonlinear parameter of 7 W-1/m and nonlinear refractive index of 3.71 × 10-18 m2/W. GeSbS waveguides are used to generate supercontinuum from 1280 nm to 2120 nm at the -30 dB level. The spectrum expands along the red shifted side of the spectrum faster than on the blue shifted side, facilitated by cascaded stimulated Raman scattering arising from the large Raman gain of chalcogenides. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic measurements show that these glasses are optically transparent up to 25 µm, making them useful for short - wave to long - wave infrared applications in both linear and nonlinear optics.

RESUMO

We have fabricated gradient-grafted nanofoam films that are able to record the presence of volatile chemical compounds in an offline regime. In essence, the nanofoam film (100-300 nm thick) is anchored to a surface cross-linked polymer network in a metastable extended configuration that can relax back to a certain degree upon exposure to a chemical vapor. The level of the chain relaxation is associated with thermodynamic affinity between the polymer chains and the volatile compounds. In our design, the chemical composition of the nanofoam film is not uniform; therefore, the film possesses a gradually changing local affinity to a vapor along the surface. Upon vapor exposure, the nonuniform changes in local film morphology provide a permanent record or "fingerprint" for the chemical event of interest. This permanent modification in the film structure can be directly detected via changes not only in the film surface profile but also in the film optical characteristics. To this end, we demonstrated that sensing/recording nanofoam films can be prepared and interrogated on the surfaces of optical waveguides, microring optical resonators. It is important that the initial surface profile and structure of the nanofoam film are encrypted by the distinctive conditions that were used to fabricate the film and practically impossible to replicate without prior knowledge.

RESUMO

Solution-based electrospray film deposition, which is compatible with continuous, roll-to-roll processing, is applied to chalcogenide glasses. Two chalcogenide compositions are demonstrated: Ge23Sb7S70 and As40S60, which have both been studied extensively for planar mid-infrared (mid-IR) microphotonic devices. In this approach, uniform thickness films are fabricated through the use of computer numerical controlled (CNC) motion. Chalcogenide glass (ChG) is written over the substrate by a single nozzle along a serpentine path. Films were subjected to a series of heat treatments between 100 °C and 200 °C under vacuum to drive off residual solvent and densify the films. Based on transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and surface roughness measurements, both compositions were found to be suitable for the fabrication of planar devices operating in the mid-IR region. Residual solvent removal was found to be much quicker for the As40S60 film as compared to Ge23Sb7S70. Based on the advantages of electrospray, direct printing of a gradient refractive index (GRIN) mid-IR transparent coating is envisioned, given the difference in refractive index of the two compositions in this study.
