RESUMO

The study developed a cost-effective integrated technology to treat swine wastewater at the pilot-scale small pigsty. The swine wastewater, which was separated rinse water after flowing through the slatted floor and the innovatively constructed liquid-liquid separate collection device, was subsequently pumped into an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and then through zoning constructed wetlands (CWs) comprised of CW1, CW2, and CW3. The liquid-liquid separate collection device effectively reduced COD, NH4-N, and TN by 57.82%, 52.39%, and 50.95%, respectively. The CW1 and CW2 enhanced TN removal and nitrification, respectively, through rapid adsorption-bioregeneration of zeolite. Moreover, rice straws were used as solid carbon sources in CW3 to successfully promote denitrification at 16.0 g/(m3·d). The integrated technology (slatted floor-liquid liquid separate collection-ABR-CWs) reduced COD, NH4-N, and TN by 98.17%, 87.22%, and 87.88%, respectively, at approximately 10 °C. Microbial analysis results confirmed that the CWs exhibited apparent functional zoning, with denitrifiers dominating in CW3, nitrifiers dominating in the zeolite layers of CW1 and CW2, and denitrifiers dominating in the brick slag layers of CWs. This cost-effective integrated technology demonstrated significant potential for treating swine wastewater at low temperatures.

Predicting the prognosis of glioblastoma (GBM) has always been important for improving survival. An understanding of the prognostic factors for patients with GBM can help guide treatment. Herein, we aimed to construct a prognostic model for predicting overall survival (OS) for patients with GBM. We identified 11,375 patients with pathologically confirmed GBM from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database between 2004 and 2015. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival probabilities were 48.8%, 22.5%, and 13.1%, respectively. The patients were randomly divided into the training cohort (n = 8531) and the validation cohort (n = 2844). A Cox proportional risk regression model was used to analyze the prognostic factors of patients in the training cohort, and a nomogram was constructed. Then concordance indexes (C-indexes), calibration curves, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the performance of the nomograms by internal (training cohort) and external validation (validation cohort). Log-rank test and univariate analysis showed that age, race, marital status, extent of surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation were the prognostic factors for patients with GBM (p < 0.05), which were used to construct nomogram. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.717 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.710-0.724) in the training cohort, and 0.724 (95% CI, 0.713-0.735) in the validation cohort. The nomogram had a higher areas under the ROC curve value. The nomogram was well validated, which can effectively predict the OS of patients with GBM. Thus, this nomogram could be applied in clinical practice.

A 10 kV distribution network is a crucial piece of infrastructure to guarantee enterprises' and households' access to electricity. Stripping cables is one of many power grid maintenance procedures that are now quickly expanding. However, typical cable-stripping procedures are manual and harmful to workers. Although numerous automated solutions for grid maintenance have been created, none of them focus on cable stripping, and most of them have large dimensions to guarantee multi-functions. In this paper, a new cable-stripping robot for the 10 kV power system is introduced. The design of a live working cable-stripping robot that is appropriate for installing insulating rods is introduced, taking into account the working environment of 10 kV overhead lines and the structural characteristics of overhead cables. The robot is managed by an auxiliary remote control device. A cascade PID control technology based on the back propagation neural network (BPNN) method was developed, as the stripper robot's whole system is nonlinear and the traditional PID controller lacked robustness and adaptability in complex circumstances. To validate the structural feasibility of the cable-stripping robot, as well as the working stability and adaptability of the BPNN-PID controller, a 95 mm2 cable-stripping experiment are carried out. A comparison of the BPNN-PID controller with the traditional PID method revealed that the BPNN-PID controller has a greater capacity for speed tracking and system stability. This robot demonstrated its ability to replace manual stripping procedures and will be used for practical routine power maintenance.

PURPOSE: To investigate the brain protective effects of fingolimod on inflammatory response of SAH mice. METHODS: We utilized an endovascular mouse perforation model of SAH. Mice were divided into three groups: sham group, SAH group and SAH + Fingolimod group. Mice received either saline or fingolimod (1 mg/kg) intraperitoneally 2 h after sham surgery or SAH. The modified neurological severity score (mNSS) and Morris water maze were respectively used to evaluate the influence of nerve function. Evens blue (EB) extravasation was used to detect the permeability of blood-brain barrier, and water content in brain tissue was also detected. Flow cytometry, ELISA kits and western blotting were used to detect inflammatory factors in brain tissue. RESULTS: The results showed that compared with SAH group, after treatment, the delay time of locating the hidden platform was shorter. The mNSS results showed that fingolimod improved the behavior of SAH mice. In addition, fingolimod could reduce the water content in brain. Flow cytometry results showed that after 3 d of treatment, fingolimod significantly increased Treg cells and down-regulated NK cells. Western blotting results showed fingolimod inhibited the expression of inflammatory cytokines in brain tissue. ELISA kit results showed that fingolimod could down-regulate IL-6 and TNF-α and up-regulate IL-10 and TGF-ß1 in serum. CONCLUSIONS: Fingolimod could regulate the inflammatory response to alleviate SAH-induced brain damage and promote neurological recovery, which provides a new therapeutic strategy for SAH treatment.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of influent pH on the hydrolytic acidification (HA) performance and microbial community structure in an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) pretreating crotonaldehyde manufacture wastewater (CMW) after ozonation. The results showed that higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate (40.1%) and acidification degree (27.6%) were obtained at pH 8.0 than those at pH 6.0 and pH 4.0. The concentration of extractable extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in the sludge gradually decreased with the pH decreasing from 8.0 to 4.0. A similar change was also observed for the concentration of total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) in the effluent. The optimal detoxification efficiency by the HA process was obtained at pH 8.0, with higher removal efficiency (all higher than 90%) of the main toxic pollutants (crotonaldehyde, 5-formyl-6-methyl-4,5-dihydropyran, etc.) and higher anaerobic biodegradation rate (44.5%) in biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay. Among the predominant genera, the Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas were possibly related to biodegradation of pollutants, since their higher relative abundance also coincided with the better performance of the HA process at pH 8.0.

Oyster shells are a type of biogenic materials with excellent characteristics in surface area, porosity, sorption capacity, and high concentration of CaCO3 (up to 90 wt%), and can be easily converted into a calcium-based alkali adsorbent. In this research, oyster shells calcined at 900 °C were applied as an adsorbent for acid green 25 (AG25) removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorption performances were evaluated, and the FTIR, SEM, and BET techniques were employed to characterize this material. Results showed that AG25 removal performance depended on adsorbent dosage, pH, adsorption temperature, contact time, and initial concentration. Adsorption capacity was maximized at 34.1 mg g-1 at pH of 11.0, an adsorbent dosage of 2.0 g L-1, an AG25 concentration of 70 mg L-1, and adsorption temperature of 40 °C. Both the Ho-McKay model and the pseudo-second-order model correlated with the adsorption kinetics well with the values of R2 > 0.99 (closer to unity). The Langmuir isotherm showed an excellent correlation coefficient of R2 > 0.99 with the equilibrium data. The thermodynamics study indicates that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. These results demonstrate that the calcined oyster shells has the potential to be used as an eco-friendly and low-cost effective adsorbent for anionic dye removal from water.

OBJECTIVE: A new approach, named bilateral motion data fusion, was proposed for the analysis of movement symmetry, which takes advantage of cross-information between both sides of the body and processes the unilateral motion data at the same time. METHODS: This was accomplished using canonical correlation analysis and joint independent component analysis. It should be noted that human movements include many categories, which cannot be enumerated one by one. Therefore, the gait rhythm fluctuations of the healthy subjects and patients with neurodegenerative diseases were employed as an example for method illustration. In addition, our model explains the movement data by latent parameters in the time and frequency domains, respectively, which were both based on bilateral motion data fusion. RESULTS: They show that our method not only reflects the physiological correlates of movement but also obtains the differential signatures of movement asymmetry in diverse neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, the latent variables also exhibit the potentials for sharper disease distinctions. CONCLUSION: We have provided a new perspective on movement analysis, which may prove to be a promising approach. SIGNIFICANCE: This method exhibits the potentials for effective movement feature extractions, which might contribute to many research fields such as rehabilitation, neuroscience, biomechanics, and kinesiology.

Dispersed swine wastewater has increasingly aggravated water pollution in China. Anaerobically digested dispersed swine wastewater was targeted and treated by a pilot-scale zoning tidal flow constructed wetland (TFCW) with a bottom wastewater saturation layer. The long-term application of in-situ biological regeneration of biozeolite, nitrogen removal performance, nitrogen removal pathways and microbial community of TFCW were investigated. Results showed that with the surface loads of 0.079, 0.022 and 0.024 kg/(m2·d), TFCW could decrease COD, NH4N and TN by 84.75%, 74.13% and 67.13% respectively. Influent COD, NH4N, TN and nitrates/nitrites produced by bioregeneration of NH4N were mostly removed in zeolite layer and the remaining nitrates/nitrites could be further denitrified in bottom saturation layer. Theory of dynamic process of rapid-adsorption and bioregeneration for NH4N removal was proposed. When this process reached dynamic equilibrium, the mass of adsorbed NH4N onto zeolites remained relatively stable. When ambient temperature decreased to 16 °C, TFCW could still remove COD, NH4N and TN by 73.79%, 72.99% and 70.71% with the surface loads of 0.103, 0.056 and 0.054 kg/(m2·d) respectively. Nitrification-denitrification which accounted for 80.32% of TN removal was the main nitrogen removal pathway. Dominant nitrifiers (Nitrosospira and Rhizomicrobium) and denitrifiers (Ottowia, Thauera and Rhodanobacteria) in biozeolite layer verified the existence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

The effect of Zn2+ on ammonium and phosphorous removal and duckweed growth was evaluated for treatment of anaerobically digested swine wastewater (ADSW) at various initial Zn2+ concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 15mg/L. Lemna aequinoctialis taken from a local pond was selected for the treatment, and its fresh weight and contents of proteins, photosynthetic pigments, and vitamin E were examined. Results showed that the optimal Zn2+ concentration was 5.0mg/L for NH3-N and TP removal, the duckweed growth, and the accumulation of proteins in the duckweed. A maximum content of photosynthetic pigments increased with the increase of initial Zn2+ concentration, and it arrived earlier for a higher concentration of Zn2+. Vitamin E content in the duckweed reached 4.5mg/kg at 15mg/L Zn2+ in 12-day cultivation, which showed the potential for producing and harvesting a high value-added product of vitamin E by culturing duckweed in ADSW.

RESUMO

Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of biomass residues under limited oxygen conditions. In recent years, biochar as an amendment has received increasing attention on composting and soil remediation, due to its unique properties such as chemical recalcitrance, high porosity and sorption capacity, and large surface area. This paper provides an overview on the impact of biochar on the chemical characteristics (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, decomposition and humification of organic matter) and microbial community structure during composting of organic wastes. This review also discusses the use of biochar for remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants and heavy metals as well as related mechanisms. Besides its aging, the effects of biochar on the environment fate and efficacy of pesticides deserve special attention. Moreover, the combined application of biochar and compost affects synergistically on soil remediation and plant growth. Future research needs are identified to ensure a wide application of biochar in composting and soil remediation. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
