RESUMO

Blunt esophageal injury is an unusual organ injury that has unclear clinical symptoms due to the overlap of thoracoabdominal trauma in the setting of multiple traumas. The treatment options vary depending on the patient's clinical symptoms, the extent of esophageal damage, and the time from the onset of damage to diagnosis. This article presents a case of a young male patient receiving emergency treatment after a traffic accident. Esophageal perforation was diagnosed through chest computed tomography with contrast injection and oral contrast. The article focuses on imaging characteristics and suggestive signs of blunt esophageal injury in the setting of multitrauma.

This study aims to synthesize a guest-host complex derived from rutin (Rut) and ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) (denoted as [Rut⊂ß-CD]). The obtained substance was characterized by the FT-IR and DSC methods, signifying the formation of an inclusion complex between Rut and ß-CD. Complex formation increased the antioxidant activity of rutin corresponding to the decrease of EC50 values from 1.547 × 10-5 mol L-1 to 1.227 × 10-5 mol L-1 according to the DPPH free radical scavenging test. The rutin-ß-CD interaction energies were calculated in the vacuum and various solvents (e.g., water, ethanol, and dimethylsulfoxide) utilizing an accurate and broadly parametrized self-consistent tight-binding quantum chemical method (GFN2-xTB). The calculation results reveal the influence of solvent on the structural formation of the rutin-ß-CD complex. In both the vacuum and aqueous solution, rutin can enter into the small-sized empty cavity of ß-CD, albeit through different terminals, resulting in distinct preferential structures. The presence of organic solvents appears to reduce the interaction between rutin and ß-CD, with the interaction strength following the order: water > ethanol > dimethyl sulfoxide.

This study focuses on modifying the porous structure of acid-treated rice husk ash (ARHA) to enhance the thermal energy storage capacity of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) confined within shape-stabilized phase change materials. The modification process involved a cost-effective sol-gel method in which ARHA was initially dissolved in an alkaline solution and subsequently precipitated in an acidic environment. ARHA, being a mesoporous SiO2-based material with a high surface area but low pore volume, had limited capacity to adsorb PEG (50%). Furthermore, it hindered the crystallinity of impregnated PEG by fostering abundant interfacial hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), resulting in a diminished thermal energy storage efficiency. Following modification of the porous structure, the resulting material, termed mARHA, featured a three-dimensional macroporous network, providing ample space to stabilize a significant amount of PEG (70%) without any leakage. Notably, mARHA, with a reduced surface area, effectively mitigated interfacial H-bonds, consequently enhancing the crystallinity of impregnated PEG. This modification led to the recovery of thermal energy storage efficacy from 0 J/g for PEG/ARHA to 109.3 J/g for PEG/mARHA. Additionally, the PEG/mARHA composite displayed improved thermal conductivity, reliable thermal performance, and effective thermal management when used as construction materials. This work introduces a straightforward and economical strategy for revitalizing thermal energy storage in PEG composites confined within RHA-based porous supports, offering promising prospects for large-scale applications in building energy conservation.

Research on natural products is growing due to their potential health benefits and medicinal properties. Despite regional variations in phytochemical composition and bioactivity, Smilax glabra Roxb (SGB) has attracted the interest of researchers. Scientists are particularly interested in the Vietnamese SGB variant, which is influenced by biological and environmental factors. Despite geographical differences in phytochemical makeup and bioactivities, SGB remains a fascinating subject in traditional herbal medicine. Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS), the phytochemicals in Vietnamese SGB extracts were investigated. This study revealed a wide range of phytochemical compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides, alkaloids, organic acids, phenolics, and steroids. Furthermore, utilizing zebrafish as a model organism, we discovered that these extracts have the surprising ability to greatly improve the survival rate of zebrafish larvae exposed to oxidative stress caused by arsenite (NaAsO2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Notably, our discoveries suggest the occurrence of new antioxidative pathways in addition to the kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway, expanding the understanding of the antioxidant properties and potential therapeutic uses of these plants. To summarize, our research findings shed light on the phytochemical composition of Vietnamese SGB, revealing its potential as a natural antioxidant and encouraging further exploration of its underlying mechanisms for future innovative antioxidant therapies.

This study aimed to assess the potential impact of long-term chronic exposure (69 years) to naturally-occurring radionuclides (RNs) and heavy metals on microbial communities in sediment from a stream flowing through a watershed impacted by an ancient mining site (Rophin, France). Four sediment samples were collected along a radioactivity gradient (for 238U368 to 1710 Bq.Kg-1) characterized for the presence of the bioavailable fractions of radionuclides (226Ra, 210Po), and trace metal elements (Th, U, As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe). Results revealed that the available fraction of contaminants was significant although it varied considerably from one element to another (0 % for As and Th, 5-59 % for U). Nonetheless, microbial communities appeared significantly affected by such chronic exposure to (radio)toxicities. Several microbial functions carried by bacteria and related with carbon and nitrogen cycling have been impaired. The high values of fungal diversity and richness observed with increasing downstream contamination (H' = 4.4 and Chao1 = 863) suggest that the community had likely shifted toward a more adapted/tolerant one as evidenced, for example, by the presence of the species Thelephora sp. and Tomentella sp. The bacterial composition was also affected by the contaminants with enrichment in Myxococcales, Acidovorax or Nostocales at the most contaminated points. Changes in microbial composition and functional structure were directly related to radionuclide and heavy metal contaminations, but also to organic matter which also significantly affected, directly or indirectly, bacterial and fungal compositions. Although it was not possible to distinguish the specific effects of RNs from heavy metals on microbial communities, it is essential to continue studies considering the available fraction of elements, which is the only one able to interact with microorganisms.

BACKGROUND: Females with perinatal HIV (PHIV) infection are at elevated risk for anogenital high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection. Limited data are available around the effect of the HPV vaccination after initiation of sexual activity among PHIV youth. This study aims to assess the impact of a bivalent HPV vaccination on the persistence of anogenital HR-HPV among sexually active female PHIV youth and matched HIV-negative controls aged 12-24years in Thailand and Vietnam. METHODS: During a 3-year study, prevalent, incident, and persistent HR-HPV infection were assessed at annual visits. A subset of participants received a bivalent HPV vaccine. Samples were taken for HPV testing from the vagina, cervix, and anus. HR-HPV persistence was defined as the detection of the same genotype(s) at any anogenital compartment over≥two consecutive visits. RESULTS: Of the 93 PHIV and 99 HIV-negative female youth enrolled in this study, 25 (27%) PHIV and 22 (22%) HIV-negative youth received a HPV vaccine. Persistent infection with any HR-HPV type was significantly lower among PHIV youth who received the vaccine compared to those who did not (33%vs 61%, P =0.02); a difference was not observed among HIV-negative youth (35%vs 50%, P =0.82). PHIV infection (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 2.31, 95% CI 1.45-3.67) and not receiving a HPV vaccine (aPR, 1.19, 95%CI 1.06-1.33) were associated with persistent anogenital HR-HPV infection. CONCLUSIONS: Bivalent HPV vaccination after initiation of sexual activity was associated with reduced persistence of anogenital HR-HPV infection in Southeast Asian PHIV female youth, which may be related to vaccine cross-protection. Primary and catch-up HPV vaccinations should be prioritised for children and youth with HIV.

RESUMO

We analyzed 1,303 SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences from Vietnam, and found the Alpha and Delta variants were responsible for a large nationwide outbreak of COVID-19 in 2021. The Delta variant was confined to the AY.57 lineage and caused >1.7 million infections and >32,000 deaths. Viral transmission was strongly affected by nonpharmaceutical interventions.

We assessed morbidity and mortality among Thai and Vietnamese adolescents and young adults with perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV) compared with matched HIV-negative peers, 12-24 years of age. Data on serious adverse events (SAEs) were prospectively collected between 2013 and 2018 according to U.S. NIH Division of AIDS criteria. Of 288 youth, 142 had PHIV and 146 were HIV negative. At enrollment, the overall median age was 19 (interquartile range [IQR] 17-20) years, 67% were female, and 95% were Thai. Almost all PHIV youth (99%) were receiving antiretroviral therapy; 50% self-reported adherence ≥95%. Median CD4 was 579 (IQR 404-800) cells/mm3, and 24% had HIV-RNA ≥1,000 copies/mL. During follow-up, 31 (22%) PHIV youth and 9 (6%) HIV-negative youth had at least one SAE. The overall crude SAE rate was 4.66 (3.42-6.35) per 100 person-years (PY); 7.22 (5.08-10.26) per 100 PY among youth with PHIV and 2.10 (1.09-4.03) per 100 PY in HIV-negative youth (p < .001). All seven deaths that occurred were among those with PHIV and primarily due to opportunistic infections (e.g., pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculous meningitis). In multivariate analyses, having PHIV, being <20 years of age, and having anogenital high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with types 16 and/or 18 increased risk of SAEs. Among PHIV youth, CD4 count <350 cells/mm3, HIV-RNA ≥1,000 copies/mL, advanced WHO stages, and having anogenital HPV 16 and/or 18 infection predicted higher incidence of SAEs; no prior use of alcohol was protective. These data emphasize the need for tailored interventions for adolescents with PHIV to prevent long-term morbidity and mortality.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and octacalcium phosphate (OCP) layers were formed on Mg- 4mass% Y- 3mass% rare earth (WE43) alloy by a chemical solution deposition method at various pH values of pH 5.5, 6.2, 7.5, and 8.6. Adhesion strength of HAp and OCP layers was evaluated before and after immersing in a medium for 14 days by a pull-off test. The corrosion resistance of these coatings was measured by polarization tests performed in a simulated body fluid (SBF). XRD analysis demonstrated that HAp coating layers were formed at pH 7.5 and 8.6, while OCP coating layers were formed at pH 5.5 and 6.2. Adhesion test results showed that the as-coated pH7.5-HAp layer had the highest adhesion strength of 8.6 MPa, which was attributed to the very dense structure of the coating layer. The as-coated pH8.6-HAp layer showed the adhesion strength of 6.5 MPa. The adhesion strength of the as-coated pH5.5- and pH6.2-OCP layers was 3.9 and 7.1 MPa, respectively, that was governed by the thick and fragile property of the layers. After immersing in the medium for 14 days, the adhesion strength of pH7.5- and pH8.6-specimens decreased to 5.8 and 5.6 MPa, respectively. The pitting corrosion and formation of Mg(OH)2 under the HAp layers were responsible for the decrease of adhesion strength. The polarization tests in SBF at 37 °C showed that the corrosion current density decreased with the HAp and OCP coatings, indicating the improvement of the corrosion resistance of WE43 alloy. The HAp coatings improved the corrosion resistance more efficiently than the OCP coatings.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of pH treatment on the formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating layer and the biodegradation rate of hydroxyapatite coated AZ31 alloy for applications in biodegradable implants. METHODS: HA was grown on the surface of AZ31 substrate at three different pH solutions of 7.5, 9.0, and 10.5 respectively by chemical solution treatment method. The coated samples were evaluated their biodegradation behavior by immersion test in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 14 days. The biodegradation rate of the samples during immersion test was observed by Mg2+ ion quantification method and measuring the increase of pH of the medium. RESULTS: HA coatings were successfully grown on the AZ31 substrate at three different pH conditions. The sample coated at pH 7.5 showed its uniform and dense coating layer resulted in highest corrosion resistance. While the highest biodegradation rate was observed for the sample coated at pH 10.5 due to many micro-cracks formed in the HA layer. After 14 days of immersion, Mg(OH)2 and calcium phosphate were corrosion products on the surface of the specimens coated at pH 10.5 and pH 9.0 respectively. While HA almost remained on the surface of sample coated at pH 7.5. CONCLUSION: AZ31 alloy coated with HA at pH 7.5 has lowest biodegradation rate and become suitable for applications in biodegradable implants.

Fisheries and aquaculture production in the coastal zone of Vietnam contribute significantly to the national economy. However, seafood quality and safety, especially in terms of metal contents, are of increasing concern, for both domestic and international markets. This paper presents the results of an investigation in some trace metal elements (iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg)) concentrations in some fishes, crustaceans, and molluscs in the coastal zone of the Red River (in the Ba Lat estuary in Thai Binh and Nam Dinh provinces) during four sampling campaigns in 2020. All samples were treated by a green sample preparation using microwave digestion and then analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the trace metal element concentrations in fish, crustacean, and mollusc samples decreased in the following order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > As > Cd ∼ Hg. In more details, the ranges of trace metal elements in seafood samples were 13.13-202.73; 7.63-82.71; 0.48-22.73; 0.72-15.58; 0.18-5.12; 0.001-1.114; and 0.001-0.923 mg·kg-1 for Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, and Hg, respectively. The research results contribute to the dataset of the seafood (both fishery and aquacultural seafood) quality in the Red River coastal zone. Although the mean values of different trace metal elements observed in this study were lower than the allowed values of Vietnam's or European's threshold for food safety, some high concentrations were detected. The survey results suggest the need to expand the monitoring scope (frequency of monitoring, number of samples, and observed variables) for obtaining a fully comprehensive assessment of seafood quality in this region. Our results also indicate that it is necessary to manage water quality in coastal areas, especially where aquaculture activities are carried out.

BACKGROUND: Youth with perinatally acquired HIV (YPHIV) are at higher risk for anogenital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. METHODS: We enrolled a cohort of YPHIV and HIV-negative youth in Thailand and Vietnam, matched by age and lifetime sex partners, and followed them up for 144 weeks (to 2017). Participants had annual pelvic examinations with samples taken for HPV genotyping. Concordant infection was simultaneous HPV detection in multiple anogenital compartments (cervical, vaginal, anal); sequential infection was when the same type was found in successive compartments (cervicovaginal to/from anal). Generalized estimating equations were used to assess factors associated with concordant infection, and Cox regression was used to assess factors associated with sequential infection. RESULTS: A total of 93 YPHIV and 99 HIV-negative women were enrolled, with a median age of 19 years (interquartile range, 18-20 years). High-risk anogenital HPV infection was ever detected in 76 (82%) YPHIV and 66 (67%) HIV-negative youth during follow-up. Concordant anogenital high-risk HPV infection was found in 62 (66%) YPHIV versus 44 (34%) HIV-negative youth. Sequential cervicovaginal to anal high-risk HPV infection occurred in 20 YPHIV versus 5 HIV-negative youth, with an incidence rate of 9.76 (6.30-15.13) versus 2.24 (0.93-5.38) per 100 person-years. Anal to cervicovaginal infection occurred in 4 YPHIV versus 0 HIV-negative women, with an incidence rate of 1.78 (0.67-4.75) per 100 person-years. Perinatally acquired HIV was the one factor independently associated with both concordant and sequential high-risk HPV infection. CONCLUSIONS: Children and adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV should be prioritized for HPV vaccination, and cervical cancer screening should be part of routine HIV care for sexually active YPHIV.

BACKGROUND: We studied the prevalence of 7, high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types in the nonavalent vaccine (HRVT-7: HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58) among vaccine-naïve, sexually active Asian female adolescents with and without perinatally acquired HIV infection (PHIV). METHODS: PHIV female adolescents 12-24 years of age and HIV-uninfected controls matched by age and number of lifetime sex partners were enrolled in a 3-year observational cohort study in Thailand and Vietnam. Samples from the oral cavity, anus, cervix and vagina were collected for HRVT-7 HPV genotyping, and serum collected for HPV 16 and 18 antibody testing. Baseline data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: We included 93 PHIV (median CD4 593 cells/mm, 62% with HIV RNA suppression) and 99 HIV-uninfected adolescents (median lifetime sex partners 2). The overall prevalence of HRVT-7 infection was 53% in PHIV and 49% in HIV-uninfected adolescents (P = 0.66). Cervical HRVT-7 DNA was detected more frequently in PHIV than HIV-uninfected adolescents (37% vs. 23%, P = 0.04). Overall, more lifetime partners [≥3 vs. 1; odds ratio (OR) 2.99 (1.38-6.51), P = 0.02] and having other sexually transmitted infections [OR 3.30 (1.51-7.21), P = 0.003] increased the risk of HRVT-7 infection and/or positive HPV 16/18 antibodies; while detectable HIV RNA [OR 2.78 (1.05-7.36), P = 0.04] increased the risk among PHIV adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Half of sexually active Asian female adolescents, regardless of HIV infection, had already acquired HRVT-7 infection. This underscores the need for earlier access to HPV vaccine in the region.

BACKGROUND: Female youth with perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV) may be at higher risk than uninfected youth for persistent anogenital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, due to prolonged immunodeficiency. METHODS: A 3-year cohort study was conducted between 2013 and 2017 among Thai and Vietnamese PHIV and HIV-uninfected females 12-24 years, matched by age group and number of lifetime sexual partners. For HPV genotyping, cervical and anal samples were obtained at baseline and annually. Vaginal samples were collected at baseline and every 6 months. Factors associated with high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) persistence and incidence were assessed. RESULTS: We enrolled 93 PHIV and 99 HIV-uninfected females. Median age was 19 (interquartile range [IQR] 18-20) years. For the 7 HR-HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58) in the nonavalent HPV vaccine, PHIV had significantly higher incidence (P = .03) and persistence (P = .01) than HIV-uninfected youth over a 3-year period. Having HIV (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 2.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1-3.9) and ever using illegal substances (aHR 4.8, 95% CI 1.8-13.0) were associated with incident 7 HR-HPV infections. HIV-positive status (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 2.2, 95% CI 1.5-3.2), recent alcohol use (aPR 1.75, 95% CI 1.2-2.5), and higher number of lifetime partners (aPR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4-3.1, for 3-5 partners; aPR 1.93, 95% CI 1.2-3.2, for ≥6 partners) were significantly associated with persistent 7 HR-HPV infections. CONCLUSIONS: Female PHIV were at higher risk of having anogenital HR-HPV acquisition and persistence. Primary and secondary prevention programs for HPV infection and HPV-related diseases should be prioritized for PHIV children and youth.

Kabuki syndrome (KS, KS1: OMIM 147920 and KS2: OMIM 300867) is caused by pathogenic variations in KMT2D or KDM6A. KS is characterized by multiple congenital anomalies and neurodevelopmental disorders. Growth restriction is frequently reported. Here we aimed to create specific growth charts for individuals with KS1, identify parameters used for size prognosis and investigate the impact of growth hormone therapy on adult height. Growth parameters and parental size were obtained for 95 KS1 individuals (41 females). Growth charts for height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and occipitofrontal circumference were generated in standard deviation values for the first time in KS1. Statural growth of KS1 individuals was compared to parental target size. According to the charts, height, weight, BMI, and occipitofrontal circumference were lower for KS1 individuals than the normative French population. For males and females, the mean growth of KS1 individuals was -2 and -1.8 SD of their parental target size, respectively. Growth hormone therapy did not increase size beyond the predicted size. This study, from the largest cohort available, proposes growth charts for widespread use in the management of KS1, especially for size prognosis and screening of other diseases responsible for growth impairment beyond a calculated specific target size.

The reality and intensity of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria calls for the rapid development of new antimicrobial drugs. In bacteria, trans-translation is the primary quality control mechanism for rescuing ribosomes arrested during translation. Because trans-translation is absent in eukaryotes but necessary to avoid ribosomal stalling and therefore essential for bacterial survival, it is a promising target either for novel antibiotics or for improving the activities of the protein synthesis inhibitors already in use. Oxadiazole derivatives display strong bactericidal activity against a large number of bacteria, but their effects on trans-translation were recently questioned. In this work, a series of new 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives and analogs were synthesized and assessed for their efficiency as antimicrobial agents against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogenic strains. Despite the strong antimicrobial activity observed in these molecules, it turns out that they do not target trans-translation in vivo, but they definitely act on other cellular pathways.

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP; OMIM#135100) is an ultra-rare, severely disabling genetic disease characterized by congenital malformation of the great toes and progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and aponeuroses often preceded by painful, recurrent soft tissue swelling (flare-ups). The formation of HO leads to progressive disability, severe functional limitations in joint mobility, and to a shortened life-span. In this prospective natural history study, we describe the baseline, cross-sectional disease phenotype of 114 individuals with FOP. METHODS: All subjects underwent protocol-specified baseline assessments to determine their disease status. Cross-sectional analyses were performed using linear regression in which functional evaluations (Cumulative Analogue Joint Involvement Scale [CAJIS] and the FOP-Physical Function Questionnaire [FOP-PFQ]) and the burden of HO as measured by low-dose whole body CT (volume of HO and number of body regions with HO) were assessed. RESULTS: Findings from 114 subjects (age range 4 to 56 years) were evaluated. While subject age was significantly (p < 0.0001) correlated with increased CAJIS (r = 0.66) and FOP-PFQ scores (r = 0.41), the estimated mean increases per year (based on cross-sectional average changes over time) were small (0.47 units and 1.2%, respectively). There was also a significant (p < 0.0001) correlation between baseline age and HO volume (r = 0.56), with an estimated mean increase of 25,574 mm3/year. There were significant (p < 0.0001) correlations between the objective assessment of HO volume and clinical assessments of CAJIS (r = 0.57) and FOP-PFQ (r = 0.52). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the cross-sectional analysis of the baseline data, functional and physical disability as assessed by CAJIS and the FOP-PFQ increased over time. Although longitudinal data are not yet available, the cross-sectional analyses suggest that CAJIS and FOP-PFQ are not sensitive to detect substantial progression over a 1- to 2-year period. Future evaluation of longitudinal data will test this hypothesis. The statistically significant correlations between HO volume and the functional endpoints, and the estimated average annual increase in total HO volume, suggest that the formation of new HO will be measurable over the relative short-term course of a clinical trial, and represents an endpoint that is clinically meaningful to patients. Background: Infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) may be higher in perinatally human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected (PHIV) than HIV-uninfected (HU) adolescents because of long-standing immune deficiency. Methods: PHIV and HU females aged 12-24 years in Thailand and Vietnam were matched by age group and lifetime sexual partners. At enrollment, blood, cervical, vaginal, anal, and oral samples were obtained for HPV-related testing. The Wilcoxon and Fisher exact tests were used for univariate and logistic regression for multivariate analyses. Results: Ninety-three PHIV and 99 HU adolescents (median age 19 [18-20] years) were enrolled (June 2013-July 2015). Among PHIV, 94% were currently receiving antiretroviral therapy, median CD4 count was 593 (392-808) cells/mm3, and 62% had a viral load <40 copies/mL. Across anogenital compartments, PHIV had higher rates of any HPV detected (80% vs 60%; P = .003) and any HR-HPV (60% vs 43%, P = .02). Higher proportions of PHIV had abnormal Pap smears (eg, atypical squamous cells of unknown significance [ASC-US], 12% vs 14%; low-grade squamous intraepithelial neoplastic lesions, 19% vs 1%). After adjusting for ever being pregnant and asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STI) at enrollment, PHIV were more likely to have HR-HPV than HU (odds ratio, 2.02; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-3.77; P = .03). Conclusions: Perinatal HIV infection was associated with a higher risk of HR-HPV and abnormal cervical cytology. Our results underscore the need for HPV vaccination for PHIV adolescents and for prevention and screening programs for HPV and other STIs.

Little is known about how patients in developing countries, such as Vietnam, are satisfied with eye care services. The purpose of this study was to assess the satisfaction with health services and its associated factors among patients attending a national institute of ophthalmology in Vietnam. In a cross-sectional study utilizing quantitative methods, 500 inpatients and their relatives attending a national institute of ophthalmology in Vietnam were approached for data collection. The results indicated that under 50% of the patients were satisfied with eye care services. However, when classified by level of satisfaction, only 6.8% were very satisfied with all domains of care. There was no significant difference in satisfaction by gender and income, while significant differences by department, residence, and education were found. Patients who were from rural areas, were better educated, and used the services of the glaucoma department, were more satisfied with eye care than those from urban areas, were less educated, and used the services of treatment-on-demand department. Multivariable regression detected 2 main factors, gender and location, associated with patient satisfaction. Patients who were female and came from rural and remote areas were more likely to be satisfied than patients who were male and living in urban areas. The study suggests that to continue to improve health care quality, it is important to eliminate differences in providing eye care services regardless of whether patients are male or female, and whether they come from a rural or urban area.
