Introduction: The utilization of telemedicine has been steadily rising and became more available during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to ensure the continuity of care and minimize the risk of exposure to the infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' and caregivers' satisfaction to newly developed teleconsultation services at the internal medical outpatient clinics at a tertiary university hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional satisfaction evaluation was conducted between April 2020 and June 2020. Participants included patients or caregivers who were randomly selected to answer a multi-item questionnaire to measure satisfaction with the quality, effectiveness, and convenience of the service. Results: A total of 901 participants completed the satisfaction survey. Most of the patients were in the age group 45-64 years (43.7%). The main teleconsultation method was telephone call (99.2%) and 798 participants (88.6%) were satisfied with the quality of teleconsultation. There was no difference in satisfaction levels across the various specialty clinics or age groups. The service was viewed as convenient by 636 participants (70.5%) and 481 (56.6%) preferred to continue using telemedicine after the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The study revealed high level of satisfaction among patients and caregivers with the recently introduced teleconsultation services at internal medicine outpatient clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is a relatively new concept in many countries. This opens the door to further utilize telemedicine as an integrated part to improve patient care beyond the pandemic.

With the industrial revolution in electronics, the demand for lithium-ion batteries, particularly those designed for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, has accelerated in recent years. This continuously increasing demand requires high-performance electrode materials, as commonly used graphite anodes show limited lithium intercalation. In this context, Ni-substituted ZnCo2O4 nanostructures, thanks to their high storage capacity, have potential for use as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. Structural analysis concludes that the prepared materials show improved crystallinity with increasing Ni at the Zn-site in ZnCo2O4. The intermediate composition, Zn0.5Ni0.5Co2O4, of this series exhibits a specific capacity of 65 mA h g-1 at an elevated current rate of 10 A g-1. The lithium insertion/extraction mechanism is investigated via cyclic voltammetry, showing two redox peaks from ZnCo2O4 and a single redox peak from NiCo2O4. Additionally, the lithium diffusion coefficient in the prepared electrodes is computed to be 2.22 × 10-12 cm2 s-1 for the intermediate composition, as obtained using cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is used to observe the charge transport mechanism and the charge transfer resistance values of all the samples, which are calculated to be in the range of 235 to 306 Ω.

The development of new antihyperlipidemic agents with higher potency and lower side effects is of high priority. In this study, 1,3,4 thiadiazole Schiff base derivatives were synthesized as potential peroxisome proliferation-activated receptor-α (PPARα) agonists and characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and mass spectroscopy and then tested for their hypolipidemic activity in Triton WR-1339-induced acute hyperlipidemic rat model in comparison with bezafibrate. The compounds showed significant hypolipidemic activity. Induced fit docking showed that the compounds are potential activators of PPARα with binding scores - 8.00 Kcal/mol for 2,5-bis(4-hydroxybenzylidenamino)-1,3,4-thiadiazole. PCR array analysis showed an increase in the expression of several genes involved in lipid metabolism through mitochondrial fatty acid ß oxidation and are part of PPARα signaling pathway including Acsm3, Fabp4 and Hmgcs1. Gene expression of Lrp12 and Lrp1b involved in LDL uptake by liver cells and Cyp7a1 involved in cholesterol catabolism were also found to be upregulated.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic patients have lower capacity to metabolize drugs in comparison to normal people. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the alterations in gene expression of drug and arachidonic acid metabolizing cytochrome p450s (cyp450s) in the livers of controlled (CDM) and uncontrolled (UDM) insulin-dependent diabetic mice. METHODS: Balb/c mice were treated with single dose of streptozocin (240 mg/kg) to induce diabetes and compared with control group, which was treated with citric buffer (pH =4.5). After 3 days, the blood glucose level was measured to confirm the induction of diabetes. Normalization of blood glucose level in diabetic mice was achieved after 0.1 mL/kg Mixtard® insulin therapy for more 5 days. Then, the mice livers were isolated to extract RNA and convert it to cDNA. The gene expression of 14 genes, which play a major role in drug and arachidonic acid metabolism, were measured using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction technique. RESULTS: It was found that the gene expression was downregulated (ANOVA test, P-value <0.05) in the livers of UDM mice. The most downregulated genes were cyp4a12, cyp1a2, and slc22a1 with more than 10-fold reduction. The livers of CDM mice showed significantly (P-value <0.05) higher levels of mRNA than UDM mice, but still lower than the non-diabetic mice. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that hepatic gene expression of drug metabolizing and arachidonic acid- cyp450 enzymes is reduced in insulin-dependent diabetic mice, which can explain, at least in part, the variation in drug and fatty acid metabolism between normal and diabetic patients.

The levels of DNA methylation and their role in gene expression are key factors that could affect diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options of different diseases. In this study, the methylation levels of 22 genes that are mostly correlated to breast cancer were determined using EpiTect methyl II PCR array. This analysis was performed to determine the effect of cells' passage number and the use of antibiotics in the culturing media on gene methylation levels in MCF7 cell line. DNA methylation levels of PTGS2, ADAM23, HIC1, and PYCARD were found to be significantly different among different passages. While the DNA methylation levels of CCNA1, RASSF1, and THBS1 were found to be affected by the use of 1% of penicillin/streptomycin in the culture media. Gene expression analysis after demethylation using 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine showed that the gene expression levels of the hypermethylated genes varied between different passage numbers. This study shows that the presence of antibiotic within cultured media and cell line's passage number could greatly affect the methylation levels that need to be considered in future studies on cell lines.
