Maize, one of the most important cereal crops in Bangladesh, is severely contaminated by fumonisin, a carcinogenic secondary metabolite produced by Fusarium including Fusarium proliferatum. Biocontrol with Bacillus strains is an effective approach to controlling this F. proliferatum as Bacillus has proven antagonistic properties against this fungus. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine how native Bacillus strains can reduce fumonisin in maize cultivated in Bangladesh, where BDISO76MR (Bacillus subtilis) strains showed the highest efficacy both in vitro in detached cob and in planta under field conditions. The BDISO76MR strain could reduce the fumonisin concentration in detached cob at 98.52% over untreated control, by inhibiting the conidia germination and spore formation of F. proliferatum at 61.56% and 77.01%, respectively in vitro. On the other hand, seed treatment with formulated BDISO76MR showed higher efficacy with a reduction of 97.27% fumonisin contamination compared to the in planta cob inoculation (95.45%) over untreated control. This implies that Bacillus-based formulation might be a potential approach in mitigating fumonisin contamination in maize to ensure safe food and feed.

The Mpox virus (MPXV) is known to cause zoonotic disease in humans. The virus belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus, of the family Poxviridae, and was first reported in monkeys in 1959 in Denmark and in humans in 1970 in the Congo. MPXV first appeared in the U.S. in 2003, re-emerged in 2017, and spread globally within a few years. Wild African rodents are thought to be the reservoir of MPXV. The exotic trade of animals and international travel can contribute to the spread of the Mpox virus. A phylogenetic analysis of MPXV revealed two distinct clades (Central African clade and West African clade). The smallpox vaccine shows cross-protection against MPXV infections in humans. Those who have not previously been exposed to Orthopoxvirus infections are more vulnerable to MPXV infections. Clinical manifestations in humans include fever, muscle pain, headache, and vesicle formation on the skin of infected individuals. Pathognomonic lesions include ballooning degenerations with Guarnieri-like inclusions in vesicular epithelial cells. Alterations in viral genome through genetic mutations might favor the re-emergence of a version of MPXV with enhanced virulence. As of November 2023, 92,783 cases and 171 deaths have been reported in 116 countries, representing a global public health concern. Here, we provide insights on the re-emergence of MPXV in humans. This review covers the origin, emergence, re-emergence, transmission, pathology, diagnosis, control measures, and immunomodulation of the virus, as well as clinical manifestations. Concerted efforts of health professionals and scientists are needed to prevent the disease and stop its transmission in vulnerable populations.

The guntea loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, is categorically common freshwater fish in Southeast Asia. Current study is the first elucidation on the reproductive feature of L. guntea including population structure, sex ratio (SR), size at first maturity (Lm), breeding period, and condition factor, emphasizing on the effect of environmental factors on reproduction of this fish in the Payra River (Southern Bangladesh) during July 2021 to June 2022. Using various conventional gears, 1128 individuals (534 males and 594 females) have been collected. Total length (TL), standard length (SL), and body weight (BW) of each fish were measured. Ovaries were cautiously dissected, removed, and precisely weighed. TL ranges from 4.6 to 9.7 cm (BW = 0.7-9.27 g) for male and 4.6-10.3 cm (BW = 0.8-10.75 g) for female. Both male (47.34%) and female (52.66%) populations were the leading group in 7.00-7.99 cm TL. Overall SR was not notably altered from anticipated value of 1:1 (male:female = 1:1.11). Nonetheless, monthly variations of SR specified females were considerably outnumbered males in each month excluding March-May. Lm range was 6.4-7.0 cm, so larger than Lm is recommended to exploit. Monthly changes in GSI indicated that the main spawning season was from March to June. The spawning season was substantially correlated with rainfall, nonetheless with temperature. Additionally, relative weight indicated that habitat was imbalanced with higher predators. A fishing ban is recommended during peak spawning to protect L. guntea in the Payra River and its surroundings based on current research.

Isorhamnetin (C16H12O7), a 3'-O-methylated derivative of quercetin from the class of flavonoids, is predominantly present in the leaves and fruits of several plants, many of which have traditionally been employed as remedies due to its diverse therapeutic activities. The objective of this in-depth analysis is to concentrate on Isorhamnetin by addressing its molecular insights as an effective anticancer compound and its synergistic activity with other anticancer drugs. The main contributors to Isorhamnetin's anti-malignant activities at the molecular level have been identified as alterations of a variety of signal transduction processes and transcriptional agents. These include ROS-mediated cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, inhibition of mTOR and P13K pathway, suppression of MEK1, PI3K, NF-κB, and Akt/ERK pathways, and inhibition of Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1α expression. A significant number of in vitro and in vivo research studies have confirmed that it destroys cancerous cells by arresting cell cycle at the G2/M phase and S-phase, down-regulating COX-2 protein expression, PI3K, Akt, mTOR, MEK1, ERKs, and PI3K signaling pathways, and up-regulating apoptosis-induced genes (Casp3, Casp9, and Apaf1), Bax, Caspase-3, P53 gene expression and mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis pathway. Its ability to suppress malignant cells, evidence of synergistic effects, and design of drugs based on nanomedicine are also well supported to treat cancer patients effectively. Together, our findings establish a crucial foundation for understanding Isorhamnetin's underlying anti-cancer mechanism in cancer cells and reinforce the case for the requirement to assess more exact molecular signaling pathways relating to specific cancer and in vivo anti-cancer activities.

Abortion caused by the parasite Neospora caninum is an important threat to the livestock industry worldwide. Trophoblasts and caruncular cells play major roles in initiating innate immune responses and controlling parasite infection at the fetal-maternal interface. In the present study, bovine uterine epithelial cells (BUECs) and bovine trophoblastic (BT) cells treated with bovine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), IFN-alpha (IFN-α) and IFN-tau (IFN-τ) followed by infection with N. caninum were examined by measuring the mRNA expression levels of numerous pregnancy-associated proteins and observing parasite growth to elucidate the host-parasite interaction at the uteroplacental region. N. caninum infection increased the expression of prolactin-related protein 1 (PRP1), pregnancy-associated glycoprotein 1 (PAG1), and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-8 and IL-10) in BUECs and of IL-8 in BT cells. Bovine IFN-γ inhibited IL-8 and TNF-α expression in BUECs and IL-8 in BT cells. In contrast, the expression of the interferon-stimulated gene OAS1 was significantly increased by treatment of the infected BT cells with IFN-γ. However, treatment with bovine IFNs did not inhibit N. caninum growth in either cell line. In conclusion, our results suggest that bovine IFN-γ plays a crucial role in control of pathogenesis in uterus and induction of inflammatory response in the placental region following N. caninum infection, rather than growth inhibition of the parasites.

The precise and exhaustive discernment of factors influencing CO2 emissions underpins the advancement toward sustainable, low-carbon development. Although numerous studies have probed the correlation between predetermined proxy variables and carbon emissions, methodological constraints have often led to an inability to effectively discern carbon emission determinants among numerous potential variables or unravel complex, non-linear relationships, and interaction effects. To redress these research gaps, this research utilized machine learning models to correlate urban CO2 emissions with socioeconomic indicators. The model outputs were then visualized and interpreted using explainable methods. The findings indicated that the model successfully identified a comprehensive array of dominant influences on urban CO2 emissions, principally associated with local fiscal policies, land use, energy consumption, industrial development, and urban transportation. The findings further revealed a complex non-linear association between these factors and urban CO2 emissions; however, the majority of these variables displayed a prevalent propensity to intensify carbon emissions in correspondence with an increase in sample value. Additionally, these factors exhibited a complex interactive influence on urban CO2 emissions, with distinct pairings producing a suppressive effect exclusively at specific combination of sample values. Consequently, this research posited that a robust correlation between urban socioeconomic development and CO2 emissions in China remains to be established. Given the varied impacts of these influencing factors across different cities, a differentiated approach to development should be adopted when charting low-carbon trajectories.

Low-cost air quality (LCAQ) sensors are increasingly being used for community air quality monitoring. However, data collected by low-cost sensors contain significant noise, and proper calibration of these sensors remains a widely discussed, but not yet fully addressed, area of concern. In this study, several LCAQ sensors measuring nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) were deployed in six cities in the United States (Atlanta, GA; New York City, NY; Sacramento, CA; Riverside, CA; Portland, OR; Phoenix, AZ) to evaluate the impacts of different climatic and geographical conditions on their performance and calibration. Three calibration methods were applied, including regression via linear and polynomial models and random forest methods. When signals from carbon monoxide (CO) sensors were included in the calibration models for NO2 and O3 sensors, model performance generally increased, with pronounced improvements in selected cities such as Riverside and New York City. Such improvements may be due to (1) temporal co-variation between concentrations of CO and NO2 and/or between CO and O3; (2) different performance levels of low-cost CO, NO2, and O3 sensors; and (3) different impacts of environmental conditions on sensor performance. The results showed an innovative approach for improving the calibration of NO2 and O3 sensors by including CO sensor signals into the calibration models. Community users of LCAQ sensors may be able to apply these findings further to enhance the data quality of their deployed NO2 and O3 monitors.

Heritage management is important to conserve the identity of history and culture, which can generate economic activity, enhance aesthetics, increase surrounding land value, and transfer knowledge from generation to generation. Bangladesh is a land that belongs to various forms of heritage, and Rajshahi city is not an exception with different cultural and natural heritage. Overpopulation growth, unplanned urbanization, poor infrastructure, and weak urban management are imposing risks on deteriorating heritage in current days. This study was conducted to rummage the involvement of community people in imperishability and management of heritage in the Rajshahi City Corporation of Bangladesh. To fulfill the objectives, 205 individual surveys, 3 Focus Group Discussions, and 10 Key Informant Interviews were conducted to ascertain public engagement and their visualization in respect to predicament of heritage, conservation, and the way for the future. Findings reveal that 95% of respondents thought that all the heritages express the identity of Rajshahi, where around 30% of people identified some heritages as directly or indirectly related to their family. Besides, 56.67% of people strongly expressed their views that they want to conserve their heritage through the development process, while 34.17% usually accept this argument. This research also shows a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (SWOT) matrix regarding heritage management, where a priority and decision matrix have been carried out to a certain internal and external factors for heritage conservation. This research thus expected to help different people from government, non-government and local people take action regarding different forms of heritage conservation in Bangladesh.

Last cholera epidemic has been recorded in Bangladesh between 1992-1993, while few sporadic localized outbreaks have been reported as recent as 2005. Serotype O1 of Vibrio cholera is considered as the principal causative agent which transmits through contaminated drinking water resulting that epidemic. Therefore, the objective of this research was to isolate V. cholera in 3 different water sources; River, pond and tube-well, in 5 different locations of Gazipur, Bangladesh, and to analyze their antibiogram study. A total of 45 water samples were randomly collected for the isolation and identification of Vibrio spp. Samples are then serially diluted in alkaline peptone water and streak on Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salt Sucrose-TCBS agar for quantification of V. spp. For V. cholera isolation water samples were first enriched in nutrient broth at 37 °C for 16 hours followed by cultivation in selective media; TCBS agar at 37 °C for 24 hours. Yellow colonies on TCBS agar were screed as V. cholera and was confirmed by analyzing their biochemical characteristics like Catalase, Oxidase, MR, VP, Indole, Sugar fermentation. Following isolation antibiotic sensitivity test was performed on each V. cholera isolates to determine their antibiotic sensitivity profile. The results showed, out of 45 samples 12 contained V. cholera. Tube-well water has significantly lower concentration (log CFU/mL) of V. spp. than river and pond water (P < 0.05). Bacterial concentration doesn't deviate (P > 0.05) significantly in 5 different location the sample was collected from. All the 12 isolates were sensitive to Gentamicin and ciprofloxacin (100%), while Chloramphenicol (91.67%), Sulfamethoxazole (91.67%), Azithromycin (66.67%) showed high sensitivity. Isolates showed marginal sensitivity towards Tetracycline (33.33%), and Cephalexin (16.67%) and 100% resistance against antibiotics like Vancomycin, Penicillin, Erythromycin, and Nalidixic Acid. Based on these data we recommend using tube-well water instead of river and pond water for drinking purposes. Furthermore, we suggest selective use of sensitive antimicrobials listed here for therapeutics of cholera outbreak.
