RESUMO

Imposter syndrome (IS) and low self-esteem (SE) are common issues affecting medical students that can impact their well-being and development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with IS and SE among medical students at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. In this cross-sectional study, 523 medical students in years 2-6 at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, completed validated questionnaires on IS (Young Imposter Scale) and SE (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale). Sociodemographic factors were also collected. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were used to analyze IS and SE prevalence and correlates. Five hundred twenty-three students with a mean age of 22.09 ± 1.933 participated. The prevalence of low SE and positive IS was 17.6% and 24.3%, respectively. IS and SE had a significant negative correlation (p<0.001). Several sociodemographic factors were associated with increased IS, including 2nd and 4th-year students, forced study choice, and a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0-3.49 (P<0.05). Paternal education beyond high school was associated with lower IS (P<0.05). Logistic regression analyses confirmed that 2nd-year students had a 3.88 times higher odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI); 2.19-6.88), and 4th-year students had a 2.37 times higher OR (95% CI; 1.40-4.02) of IS than other years. For SE, advanced academic years, forced study choice, 7+ hours of sleep, and a GPA above 3.5 were associated with higher levels (P<0.05). Negative self-appraisals were associated with lower SE, while positive attitudes were associated with higher SE (P<0.05). Our study reveals that IS and low SE are prevalent among Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, medical students. Therefore, intervention courses that address these issues in medical education at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, may be necessary to support medical students' well-being and academic success.

The meat of the quail is one of the most delicious types, as it is rich in minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin K, which is useful in treating nervous diseases. In the present investigation, based on their live body weight, 270 genetically-enhanced white quail chicks of mixed sex were randomly assigned to 3 groups, each with 90 chicks. The first group's birds were slaughtered at 28 d of age. The birds in the second group were slaughtered at 31 d, and the birds in the third group were slaughtered at 34 d. Results showed no significant difference between the various groups in the overall mortality rate index at the end of each fattening stage (P > 0.05). There were substantial variations (P ≤ 0.05) in the average live weight index between the first and both groups at each group's marketing age. With increasing marketing age, body weight increases. Quail chicks raised for 34 d received the lowest EPEF (28.90 points), followed by those raised for 31 d and 28 d, which received 33.37 and 37.32 points, respectively. The economic feasibility of the 3 groups, no significant differences in the profit index were observed at the age of 28 d. Compared to the marketing age of the other 2 groups, it was noted that the profit index decreased as the birds advanced in age. Delaying marketing to 31 d leads to a decrease in profit by 5.7%, and delaying marketing to 34 d reduces the profit index to 26.36% compared to marketing at 28 d. For blood hematology parameters, a significant increase in the studied indicators with the age of the birds was observed through the study of blood indicators. Still, it did not reach the significance level. It could be concluded that 28 d is the ideal marketing age for the enhanced white quails, as it yielded the highest economic return and the best performance.

This study developed and evaluated camel bone gelatin films (CBGFs) with glycerol or sorbitol as plasticizers. Gelatin extracted from the bones of camels (Camelus dromedarius) at ages ranging from 2.5 to 7 years was used. A comprehensive analysis was conducted, evaluating a range of properties including thickness, moisture sorption capacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), infrared spectral characteristics, light absorption behavior, solubility, as well as mechanical and thermal attributes. This thorough examination allowed for a nuanced understanding of the diverse characteristics exhibited by the camel gelatin samples across different age groups. The results indicated that camel age, glycerol, and sorbitol had a significant impact on the properties of the film (P < 0.05). Tensile strength ranged from 0.32 MPa to 3.99 MPa, while the percentage of elongation at break varied from 89.42 % to 2.68 %. Film color (lightness, L) ranged from 21.39 to 41.33. Glycerol and sorbitol plasticized films were 100 % water soluble. Moisture sorption increased with temperature (25 °C, 35 °C, and 45 °C), with sorbitol films retaining less water. WVP was low in films from old camel bones and high in glycerol-plasticized CBGF-2.5Y and CBGF-4.5Y. Thermal analysis showed a melting temperature between 158.60 °C and 174.10 °C, depending on bone age and plasticizer. These films demonstrate promise for use in food packaging, coatings, and pharmaceutical applications.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) occurs naturally in the body and possesses antioxidant and cardioprotective effects. Cardiotoxicity has emerged as a serious effect of the exposure to cadmium (Cd). This study investigated the curative potential of CoQ10 on Cd cardiotoxicity in mice, emphasizing the involvement of oxidative stress (OS) and NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome axis. Mice received a single intraperitoneal dose of CdCl2 (6.5 mg/kg) and a week after, CoQ10 (100 mg/kg) was supplemented daily for 14 days. Mice that received Cd exhibited cardiac injury manifested by the elevated circulating cardiac troponin T (cTnT), CK-MB, LDH and AST. The histopathological and ultrastructural investigations supported the biochemical findings of cardiotoxicity in Cd-exposed mice. Cd administration increased cardiac MDA, NO and 8-oxodG while suppressed GSH and antioxidant enzymes. CoQ10 decreased serum CK-MB, LDH, AST and cTnT, ameliorated histopathological and ultrastructural changes in the heart of mice, decreased cardiac MDA, NO, and 8-OHdG and improved antioxidants. CoQ10 downregulated NF-κB p65, NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-1ß, MCP-1, JNK1, and TGF-ß in the heart of Cd-administered mice. Moreover, in silico molecular docking revealed the binding potential between CoQ10 and NF-κB, ASC1 PYD domain, NLRP3 PYD domain, MCP-1, and JNK. In conclusion, CoQ10 ameliorated Cd cardiotoxicity by preventing OS and inflammation and modulating NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome axis in mice. Therefore, CoQ10 exhibits potent therapeutic benefits in safeguarding cardiac tissue from the harmful consequences of exposure to Cd.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric surgeons have faced esophageal reconstruction challenges for decades owing to a variety of congenital and acquired conditions. This work aimed to introduce a reproducible and efficient approach for creating tissue-engineered esophageal tissue using bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) cultured in preconditioned mediums seeded on a sheep decellularized tunica vaginalis (DTV) scaffold for partial reconstruction of a rabbit's esophagus. METHODS: DTV was performed using SDS and Triton X-100 solutions. The decellularized grafts were employed alone (DTV group) or after recellularization with BMSCs cultured for 10 days in preconditioned mediums (RTV group) for reconstructing a 3 cm segmental defect in the cervical esophagus of rabbits (n = 20) after the decellularization process was confirmed. Rabbits were observed for one month, after which they were euthanized, and the reconstructed esophagi were harvested for histological analysis. RESULTS: Six rabbits in the DTV group and eight rabbits in the RTV group survived until the end of the one-month study period. Despite histological examination demonstrating that both grafts completely repaired the esophageal defect, the RTV graft demonstrated a histological structure similar to that of the normal esophagus. The reconstructed esophagi in the RTV group revealed the arrangement of the different layers of the esophageal wall with the formation of newly formed blood vessels and Schwann-like cells. CONCLUSION: DTV xenograft is a novel scaffold that promotes cell adhesion and differentiation and might be effectively utilized for regenerating esophageal tissue, paving the way for future clinical trials in pediatric patients.

Diabetes is a complex disease that affects a large percentage of the world's population, and it is associated with several risk factors. Self-management poses a significant challenge, but natural sources have shown great potential in providing effective glucose reducing solutions. Flavonoids, a class of bioactive substances found in different natural sources including medicinal plants, have emerged as promising candidates in this regard. Indeed, several flavonoids, including apigenin, arbutin, catechins, and cyanidin, have demonstrated remarkable anti-diabetic properties. The clinical effectiveness of these flavonoids is linked to their potential to decrease blood glucose concentration and increase insulin concentration. Thus, the regulation of certain metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and neoglycogenesis has also been demonstrated. In vitro and in vivo investigations revealed different mechanisms of action related to flavonoid compounds at subcellular, cellular, and molecular levels. The main actions reside in the activation of glycolytic signaling pathways and the inhibition of signaling that promotes glucose synthesis and storage. In this review, we highlight the clinical efficiency of natural flavonoids as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying this effectiveness.

Background: Khat has a stimulating and addictive effect and can induce consequences on the health and socioeconomic status of khat chewers. Objectives: This study aims to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice of khat chewing among parents in Jazan and its consequential effect on their children. Methods: This cross-sectional investigation was conducted in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Data was collected via a web-based, self-administered questionnaire measuring demographics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning khat chewing. The Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used to assess factors associated with khat chewing among parents and its consequential effect on their children. Results: A total of 724 parents were included. The sample had an overall good knowledge about the health hazards of khat chewing and an attitude against khat chewing. Nonetheless, the number of parents who reported that they had ever tried khat chewing was 200 (27.6%) and 106 parents (14.6%) confirmed that their children were khat chewers. Additionally, 98 (13.5%) parents declared that they practiced khat chewing in front of their children. Higher frequencies of parents who reported providing khat to their children were identified among parents with higher attitude levels that favor khat chewing (P value = 0.04). Conclusions: Efforts should be made to develop targeted preventive and educational strategies to reduce khat chewing among parents who have favorable attitudes toward khat chewing.

Cell shapes in tissues are affected by the biophysical interaction between cells. Tissue forces can influence specific cell features such as cell geometry and cell surface area. Here, we examined the 2-dimensional shape, size, and perimeter of pleural epithelial cells at various lung volumes. We demonstrated a 1.53-fold increase in 2-dimensional cell surface area and a 1.43-fold increase in cell perimeter at total lung capacity compared to residual lung volume. Consistent with previous results, close inspection of the pleura demonstrated wavy folds between pleural epithelial cells at all lung volumes. To investigate a potential explanation for the wavy folds, we developed a physical simulacrum suggested by D'Arcy Thompson in On Growth and Form. The simulacrum suggested that the wavy folds were the result of redundant cell membranes unable to contract. To test this hypothesis, we developed a numerical simulation to evaluate the impact of an increase in 2-dimensional cell surface area and cell perimeter on the shape of the cell-cell interface. Our simulation demonstrated that an increase in cell perimeter, rather than an increase in 2-dimensional cell surface area, had the most direct impact on the presence of wavy folds. We conclude that wavy folds between pleural epithelial cells reflects buckling forces arising from the excess cell perimeter necessary to accommodate visceral organ expansion.

Vein of Galen malformation (VGM) is a rare congenital, uncommon intracerebral vascular anomaly rarely complicated with the development of brain abscess as secondary to primary infection or after endovascular treatment. We report a very rare finding of a vein of Galen aneurysm associated with a large brain abscess at the time of diagnosis. A 12-year-old boy with a high-grade fever, severe headache, and recurrent episodes of convulsions came into the radiology department of Kassala Advanced Diagnostic Center. On a Siemens 16-slice scanner, brain non-contrast enhanced computed tomography (NECT) and contrast enhanced CT (CECT) was used to determine the source of the acute headache and convulsions which revealed a right frontal peripherally enhancing cystic lesion measuring 5.7 × 4.7 × 5.3 cm2 surrounded by massive vasogenic edema causing mass effect with midline shift to the left side by 1.5 cm suggestive of brain abscess. There is evidence of another avidly enhancing lesion seen within the third ventricle continuous with a straight sinus surrounded by extensive vascular loops consistent with an aneurysm of the vein of Galen, it was causing compression of the cerebral aqueduct with upstream mild hydrocephalus with dilated both lateral ventricles. Late presentation, diagnosis, and treatment also lead to an increase in the morbidities and mortalities of such case conditions. Urgent intervention should be considered for better outcomes.

Drug repositioning or repurposing has gained worldwide attention as a plausible way to search for novel molecules for the treatment of particular diseases or disorders. Drug repurposing essentially refers to uncovering approved or failed compounds for use in various diseases. Cancer is a deadly disease and leading cause of mortality. The search for approved non-oncologic drugs for cancer treatment involved in silico modeling, databases, and literature searches. In this review, we provide a concise account of the existing non-oncologic drug molecules and their therapeutic potential in chemotherapy. The mechanisms and modes of action of the repurposed drugs using computational techniques are also highlighted. Furthermore, we discuss potential targets, critical pathways, and highlight in detail the different challenges pertaining to drug repositioning for cancer immunotherapy.

This study provides a comprehensive computational exploration of the inhibitory activity and metabolic pathways of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MP), a furocoumarin derivative used for treating various skin disorders, on cytochrome P450 (P450). Employing quantum chemical DFT calculations, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations analyses, the biotransformation mechanisms and the active site binding profile of 8-MP in CYP1B1 were investigated. Three plausible inactivation mechanisms were minutely scrutinized. Further analysis explored the formation of reactive metabolites in subsequent P450 metabolic processes, including covalent adduct formation through nucleophilic addition to the epoxide, 8-MP epoxide hydrolysis, and non-CYP-catalyzed epoxide ring opening. Special attention was paid to the catalytic effect of residue Phe268 on the mechanism-based inactivation (MBI) of P450 by 8-MP. Energetic profiles and facilitating conditions revealed a slight preference for the C4'=C5' epoxidation pathway, while recognizing a potential kinetic competition with the 8-OMe demethylation pathway due to comparable energy demands. The formation of covalent adducts via nucleophilic addition, particularly by phenylalanine, and the generation of potentially harmful reactive metabolites through autocatalyzed ring cleavage are likely to contribute significantly to P450 metabolism of 8-MP. Our findings highlight the key role of Phe268 in retaining 8-MP within the active site of CYP1B1, thereby facilitating initial oxygen addition transition states. This research offers crucial molecular-level insights that may guide the early stages of drug discovery and risk assessment related to the use of 8-MP.

Gout, or hyperuricemia is a multifactorial and multi-faceted metabolic disease that is quite difficult to manage and/or treat. Conventional therapies such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as allopurinol, corticosteroids and colchicine amongst others, have helped in its management and treatment to some extent. This study aimed to compile and analyze the different herbal remedies used in the management of hyperuricemia and gout. A literature search was conducted from key databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) using relevant keywords via the PRISMA model. Smilax riparia A.DC. from Traditional Chinese Medicine is used in many countries for its therapeutic effect on lowering serum urate levels. No single study was able to establish the efficacy of a specific traditionally used herb via in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Patients were found to use a panoply of natural remedies, mainly plants to treat hyperuricemia and gout, which have been validated to some extent by in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Nonetheless, further research is needed to better understand the ethnopharmacological relationship of such herbal remedies.

Bladder leiomyomas are uncommon benign soft tissue neoplasms of the bladder, frequently observed in women. Diagnosis often happens incidentally during ultrasonography, with symptoms varying based on tumour size and location. Here, we present a case of a 57-year-old woman with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, successfully treated for bladder leiomyoma through transurethral resection and laparoscopic partial cystectomy. This case highlights the significance of early detection and timely intervention in optimizing patient outcomes for bladder leiomyoma.

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation can protect against sudden cardiac death (SCD) after a myocardial infarction. However, improved risk stratification for device requirement is still needed. OBJECTIVE: To improve assessment of post-infarct ventricular electro-pathology and prediction of appropriate ICD therapy by combining late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and advanced computational modelling. METHODS: ADAS LV and custom-made software was used to generate 3D patient-specific ventricular models in a prospective cohort of post-infarct patients (n=40) having undergone LGE imaging pre-ICD implantation. Corridor metrics and 3D surface features were computed from LGE images. The Virtual Induction and Treatment of Arrhythmias (VITA) framework was applied to patient-specific models to comprehensively probe the vulnerability of the scar substrate to sustaining reentrant circuits. Imaging and VITA metrics, related to the numbers of induced VTs and their corresponding round trip times (RTTs), were compared with ICD therapy during follow-up. RESULTS: Patients with an event (n=17) had a larger interface between healthy-scar and higher VITA metrics. Cox-regression demonstrated a significant independent association with an event: interface (HR 2.79; 1.44-5.44, p < .01), unique VTs (HR 1.67; CI 1.04-2.68, p = .03), mean RTT (HR 2.14; CI 1.11-4.12, p = .02), maximum RTT (HR 2.13; CI 1.19-3.81, p = .01). CONCLUSION: Detailed quantitative analysis of LGE based scarmaps, combined with advanced computational modeling, is able to accurately predict ICD therapy and could facilitate early identification of high-risk patients in addition to LVEF.

Background Thrombocytopenia is the most prevalent hematological condition in neonates that develops in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This set of illnesses is caused by either decreased platelet production due to placental insufficiency, increased platelet breakdown (consumption), or a combination of the two causes. Based on platelet count, it is defined as mild, moderate, or severe thrombocytopenia, with early and late onset. Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of thrombocytopenia and the factors that contribute to it in newborns hospitalized in the neonatal critical care unit at the Maternity and Children Hospital in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Methods This descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out at the NICU of the Maternity and Children Hospital in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, over the span of one year (August 2022 to August 2023) among hospitalized neonates with thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is defined as a platelet count of 150,000 or less. These patients were monitored until they recovered or died. Results The inclusion criteria were met by a total of 242 newborns with thrombocytopenia. Half of the neonates (57%) were full-term, with Apgar scores greater than 5 at the first (84%) and fifth (93%) minutes, respectively. The great majority of individuals (84%) experienced early-onset thrombocytopenia of mild severity (62%) and were asymptomatic (93%). The majority of the cases resolved spontaneously, with only 21% requiring platelet transfusion. There was a significant relationship discovered between gestational age and the severity of thrombocytopenia, with very preterm infants having moderate to severe thrombocytopenia, as well as birth weight (p=0.001). Furthermore, neonates with severe thrombocytopenia had a considerably higher mortality rate (p=0.001). Conclusion The mortality and morbidity of newborns with perinatal risk for neonatal thrombocytopenia can be reduced with timely detection of the cause and development of thrombocytopenia, as well as adequate and early care.

Background The global impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has disrupted the activities of medical and health profession education institutions. This study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on medical and health profession education students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward preventive measures and their commitment to precautionary measures before, during, and after the pandemic. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was carried out from January to March 2023 using an online, structured, validated questionnaire survey to gather information from medical and health sciences students from three universities, encompassing five colleges in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The minimum required sample size was estimated using the Epi Info software as 380. The data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0 (Released 2011; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Statistical tests including Student's t-test, chi-squared test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were applied. Results The findings revealed that personal experiences with COVID-19 infection had a significant impact on students' attitudes and commitment to preventive measures (p<0.05). Among the participants, 172 students (45%) reported having contracted COVID-19. Students with clinical exposure showed a higher level of understanding and adherence to preventive measures (248 students, 68%), compared to pre-clinical students (198 students, 52%) (p<0.05). Positive attitudes were observed toward practices such as sneezing etiquette (289 students, 76%) and flu vaccination (314 students, 83%) (p<0.05). However, negative attitudes were observed toward mask-wearing (155 students, 41%) and social distancing (144 students, 38%), particularly among male students (p<0.05). Conclusion The study provided valuable insights into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical and health sciences students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward preventive measures and the importance of introducing COVID-19 prevention measures in the pre-clinical phase as well as mental health support to promote positive attitudes and enhance adherence to preventive measures.

Drought is a crucial environmental stress that tremendously impacts maize production, particularly under abrupt climate changes. Consequently, breeding drought-tolerant and high-yielding maize hybrids has become decisive in sustaining its production and ensuring global food security under the global fast-growing population. The present study aimed to explore drought tolerance and agronomic performance of newly developed maize inbred lines and their hybrids. Ten newly developed maize inbred lines were crossed with two high-yielding testers using a line × tester mating design. The developed twenty hybrids alongside two high-yielding commercial hybrids were evaluated under water-deficit (5411 m3/ha) and well-watered (7990 m3/ha) conditions in dry summer climate conditions. Highly significant variations were detected among the evaluated hybrids for all studied agronomic traits under well-watered and water-deficit conditions. The inbred lines L10 and L6 were particularly notable, demonstrating the most significant negative general combining ability (GCA) effects for earliness, which is crucial for stress avoidance in both environmental settings. Inbred lines L11, L7, L6, and L1 also showed the highest positive and most significant GCA effects for key yield traits, indicating their potential as parents in breeding programs. The crosses L-10×T-1 and L-6×T-2 were outstanding for their heterotic effects on earliness in days to tasseling and silking. Similarly, the crosses L-4×T-2 and L-1×T-1 excelled in plant and ear heights under both irrigation regimes. The hybrids L-1×T-2 and L-7×T-1 demonstrated superior heterosis for chlorophyll content, number of rows per ear, and overall grain yield. Additionally, hybrids L-11×T-1 and L-11×T-2 exhibited remarkable heterotic effects for the number of grains per row, number of rows per ear, 100-kernel weight, and grain yield, highlighting their potential in breeding for productivity. Based on drought tolerance indices and cluster analysis, the cross combinations L-11×T-1, L-11×T-2, L-7×T-1, and L-1×T-2 were classified as the most drought-tolerant crosses. The principal component analysis highlighted traits such as days to tasseling, days to silking, chlorophyll content, plant height, ear height, number of grains per row, number of rows per ear, and 100-kernel weight can be taken as selection criteria for improving grain yield in maize breeding programs under limited water conditions. Based on the summarized results, the identified genetic materials could be considered promising under both conditions and hold potential for future breeding programs.

Chocolate spot and heat stress devastatingly impact the production of faba bean, particularly under prevailing climatic changes and rising drastic environmental conditions. Hence, the adaptability of faba bean performance is a decisive objective of plant breeders to ensure its sustainable production. The present study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance and stability of diverse eleven faba bean genotypes for yield characters, chocolate spot, and heat stress in eight different growing environments. The faba bean genotypes were evaluated at two sowing dates in two different locations during two growing seasons. The evaluated eleven faba bean genotypes were sown timely in autumn (25 October) and late sowing in early winter (25 November) in Bilbeis and Elkhatara during 2020 and 2021 growing seasons. The results exhibited substantial differences among the evaluated sowing dates, locations, and faba bean genotypes for all studied characters. The genotypes Sakha-3, Nubaria-3, Nubaria-5, Misr-3, and Wadi-1 were able to produce acceptable yield and quality characters under timely sowing in autumn and late sowing in early winter in all tested environments. Moreover, the genotypes Nubaria-3, Nubaria-4, Nubaria-5, Sakha-4, Giza-3, and Triple White exhibited better resistance to chocolate spot. The assessed faba bean genotypes were evaluated under late sowing to expose the plants to high temperature stress at flowering and throughout the anthesis and seed-filling stages. The genotypes Nubaria-5, Nubaria-3, Nubaria-4, Sakha-3, Sakha-4, Wadi-1, and Misr-3 possessed tolerance to heat stress more than the other genotypes. Different statistical methods were applied to study the stability of assessed genotypes such as joint regression, Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) analysis, AMMI stability value, Wricke's and Ecovalence values. The estimated stability parameters were consistent in depicting the stability of the assessed faba bean genotypes. The findings revealed that Sakha-1, Misr-3, Nubaria-4, and Nubaria-5 demonstrated stable and desirable performance across all tested environments. The heatmap was employed to classify the assessed faba bean genotypes into different groups based on agronomic performance, chocolate spot resistance and heat stress tolerance. Nubaria-3, Nubaria-4, Nubaria-5, and Misr-3 had the best performance for agronomic performance, chocolate spot resistance, and heat stress tolerance. The obtained results provide evidence of employing promising faba bean genotypes for improving the stability of agronomic performance, chocolate spot resistance, and heat stress tolerance in breeding programs principally under unprecedented climate fluctuations.

In European countries, nearly 10% of all hospital admissions are related to respiratory diseases, mainly chronic life-threatening diseases such as COPD, pulmonary hypertension, IPF or lung cancer. The contribution of blood vessels and angiogenesis to lung regeneration, remodeling and disease progression has been increasingly appreciated. The vascular supply of the lung shows the peculiarity of dual perfusion of the pulmonary circulation (vasa publica), which maintains a functional blood-gas barrier, and the bronchial circulation (vasa privata), which reveals a profiled capacity for angiogenesis (namely intussusceptive and sprouting angiogenesis) and alveolar-vascular remodeling by the recruitment of endothelial precursor cells. The aim of this review is to outline the importance of vascular remodeling and angiogenesis in a variety of non-neoplastic and neoplastic acute and chronic respiratory diseases such as lung infection, COPD, lung fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer.
